Steve Jobs' reality distortion takes its

toll on truthPosted by Seth Weintraub

March 3, 2011 9:20 AM

Apple twisted facts and used an erroneous quotation to try to convince crowds that all

other tablets had no shot at de-throning the iPad in 2011.

In what seems like a ritual at this point, I watched Apple's iPad 2 keynote in disbelief, noting the

factual errors that kept coming up minute after minute. See previous:

How Steve Jobs turned a finger spot into a death grip

Google responds to Steve Jobs' activation counting accusations

Why does Android have Steve Jobs rattled?

So, let's get started: As part of the opening iPad bullet points, Apple included this gem:

"First dual core tablet to ship in volume." That's funny, I tested a Dell (DELL) Streak 7, which had

a dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 chip in January . They've been shipping ever since on T-Mobile.

In volume.

Of course, the Motorola (MMI) XOOM also has this same dual core processor and is certainly

shipping in volume as well. In fact, I 've been using an Android phone (the Atrix) with a dual core

chip for weeks and it wasn't the first to ship in volume. As for Apple (AAPL), they haven't

shipped one iPad 2 yet -- iPad 2's hit shelves on March 11.

Perhaps this has to do with Jobs' subjective view of 'Volume' which may start at whatever

numbers iPads are currently selling? And 'ship'? Well, I don't know.

That was just the beginning. He next pulled out a thoroughly debunked, mis-translated quote

from a Samsung VP:

Some people only hear what they want to hear, but that quote should have ended with "quite

smooth." That translation was officially corrected a long time ago. Here's the recording.

Shame on Apple Keynote fact-checkers, if such a role even exists.

That leads us to:

">90% market share". OMG Math.

Both Apple and Samsung measure sales the same way -- into the channel. Apple has just as

many points of sale for the iPad as Samsung has for the Tab and likely many more. So Samsung

sold 2 million (in the last quarter) in 2010. Apple sold 14.8 million (in three quarters). That seems

like a pretty fair comparison.

Apple would have needed to sell 3.2 million more to reach 90% of 2010's tablet market share

against just Samsung alone (in triple the time). That's not including all of the Android-powered

Nooks out there, those cheap $100 Androids you can buy at Walgreens or Amazon and even

Windows-powered Tablet PCs (which are mentioned two bullet points above!). If you choose to

include the Kindle, Apple may not have even reached 50% of the market.

Perhaps Jobs meant market share of tablets that start with the letter "I."

And finally, pricing:

As for pricing, Jobs compared the most expensive Android tablet -- the XOOM --against the iPad.

While specs don't matter to the typical consumer, components do largely affect the price of a

device. The XOOM's are simply better. It has (expandable) 32GB of storage built in and 3G built

in (upgradable through a painful mail-in process to 4G). So, on that alone, it compares with the

$729 iPad.

But then consider that the XOOM has a much better, bigger 720P+ screen compared to the

iPad's 1024x768 job (it has less Retina™). Then, add far superior cameras (w/flash), stereo

speakers (iPad 2 has one), 4G and a micro-USB/SD Card reader. Apple won't say how much

RAM the iPad has, but I'm willing to bet it is about half of the XOOM's 1GB.

You see, Apple loves to talk about specs when it is in its best interest (speeds and feeds). There

are plenty of specs on size and weight that were repeated over and over:"8.8mm thin", "1.3 lbs".

Tech Specs? Lots: "Retina display has 326PPI", "1GHz Dual Core Processor", "64GB of

storage", "Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating", "Back camera: Video recording, HD (720p)

up to 30 frames per second with audio; still camera with 5x digital zoom", etc. etc. But ask them

how much RAM the iPad has and they'll tell you it doesn't matter.

Perhaps Jobs could have also compared the iPad 2 to other Android tablets' prices? Samsung's

Galaxy Tab and Dell's Streak both now start at $499 and have better cameras, 3G radios and

GPS, which seem to compete well with Apple's $499 Wifi-only offering. Reality distorted.

I have a lot of respect for Steve Jobs and Apple's products. It's just a shame that all the truth-

bending destroys the keynotes.

Here's the whole video (play distortion bingo with a double shot of Kool-Aid?):

While the author's point is well taken, the company that wins in this space won't do it on specs alone. Theamount of RAM in a tablet is secondary to user experience. If Google, tablet manufacturers, and Androiddevelopers can al l get together and real ly start getting something that competes with Apple on the user experience level, then they may be able to grab some of that mindshare that the iPad has. I think thatconsumers want an intuitive, elegent OS. The myriad of competing options ou t there on Android doesn't instillconfidence yet. The aborted fetus of the Galaxy Tab still sticks in the craw of anyone who bought it I wouldthink.

Yeah, it seems like Apple and Jobs have hired George W Bush's former communications staff. Who needsfacts? We create our own reality. The tougher the competition gets, the more ridiculous the claims. I just don'tunderstand why people continue to lap up anything Jobs says.

I want everyone to watch the Garage Band demo in the apple Ipad2 video. $4.99 for an app with the power tochange the world through music. This is one of the 500,000 apps. Showing Google maps on a tablet (TheCompetitors) is a bit underwhelming .

Go watch the Garage band video, hand your 10 year old both tablets and watch the future of tablet usageunfold right in front of your eyes. I wonder which one they will leave the room with?

This is why Apple dominates... simple as that

I had the ipad and i love it. Upgradeable i don't need to upgrade memory and screen, it will all be out dated inthe long run. Tech needs to be upgrade in small doses otherwise the Gov. will step in and stop. Limited asconsumers we are. We can't have powerful machine with limitless capabilites running around. Apple is the greatest thing since sliced bread , why can't everyone just see that! I can't even leave the house inthe morning before I do a Google News Search for Steve Jobs. I love searching for anything on my MacBookPro using safari, the only web browser o ther than Mozilla I would even consider! I watch the conferences allthe time and I get soo excited about all the fantastic products that wouldn't be available if not for the brillianceof Jobs. Sometimes I think that I am working just so I can afford to buy more and more apple p roducts. I don'teven care about the price really, why should I? Why should I be a risk vs reward price conscience buyer? Mylife is soo much easier within the Apple community. If apple makes a p roduct, I buy it and love it, not to mentionprotect it like a child. I don 't have to think about if there a re better products out there for my money, thats tootroublesome when obviously there are not. Every time I see the Apple store I just have to walk in, even though I

already own every product in the store. My favorite thing to do is convert people to Apple user's by explainingall of the benefits they will gain by le tting other people do the thinking for them. Being an apple missionary isjust part of the fun of being so p rogressive. BTW, just did another search for Steve Jobs, my mac is set up toautoMACtically perform the search every 13 minutes or so, and a headli ne read, "Jobs' Jab Suggests AppleFears Android." This is just ridiculous, those with faith in Jobs know this well already. Our Jobs fears nothingand nobody!

Dominating the tablet scene is like bei ng the world's tallest midget. I think I read that iPad is $750. I just wasbrowsing newegg and saw an Intel i5-760 w/Asus P55 combo for $380 and ATI 5870 for $199 after rebate.Budget maybe another $350-400 for RAM, HDD, and a PSU and you have yourself a moderately high endmachine for about couple hundred bucks more than some tablet that can't do anything bu t empty your wallet, waste power, and take up space. I've never seen a p iece of technology that needs such an aggressivemarketing campaign to try and tell me how it can be useful. The only thing innovative about tablets is businessmodel. The model is to get stupid peop le to buy inferior and obsolete technology. Dual core processors? 2005

Apple is THE dominating company in the smartphone/tablet/computer world (and kudos to them). It's just goodjournalism to be casting a critical eye on a big player like that.

And to say that every company makes the same kind of biased PR as Mr Jobs, is really hard to understand.Yes, company's will twist facts as part of their PR. But the term 'reality distortion filed' was inven ted to describeSteve Jobs for a reason. The man just do this kind of things on a whole different level than everyone else.If someone could give a example of otherwise, it will be more than welcome.

Personally I would never buy a Apple product. Sure, they make top notch designed product that is easy to use.But the closed ecosystem of Steve Jobs world is just not my cup of tea - and I think real ly unheal thy for thewhole industry if it sets the agenda too much.

But, I have to say that, I really respect Apple for pushing the i ndustry forwards. Their ability to mix newtechnologies with ease of use is something other company's should learn of a lot more.

But, in the end. Stick to the facts in your presentations.

@Seth

You are deliberately trying to deceive people to hide that you have messed up.

You know that to the vast majority of readers 90% of the market means 90% of end user sa les. Not 90% of landfill generation.

You know that Samsung described their build of two million as aggressive and actual sales to users as belowexpectation, so you know that they did not sell 2 million in the sense that most people understand.

You have made a complete twit of yourself in this sequence of articles. You a re at the bottom of a hole. Juststop digging!

Aarticle is dead on? Lets think about it.First, who thehell actually cares about the Dell Streak 7? 800 x 480 resolution for a tablet? What a great jokeby Samsung. What a pathetic attempt by Samsung to cash in on the Galaxy Tab's success when it wasnt evensuccessful in the first place. And since you wan t to differentiate a lie or not, the FIRST tablet with dual core isthe Toshiba Folio 100. And since volume was subjective, as metioned, then it doesnt matter that Toshibapulled the Folio after days.Next, Math I see. For that, ask Gartner or any other research firm, of course not one that you birbed already, butsomething reputable and they will say, iPad's market shre is in EXCESS of 90%. Its a fact.Jobs dont meant atablet share sarting with the le tter I:) He refers to the ones he bu ilt compared to the pathetic attempts byAndroid.

So what if Jobs ued the XOOM? No one refer to tablets as tablets. Apple established a name for tablets.People woul d most likely ask,"what iPad do you want?" compared to "What tablet do you want? Motorola or LG?"Jobs hve the lead because of his mentality of USER INTERFACE, not a whole load of SPECS without anygood in terface. Less battery life, etc.Google will a lways play catchup. Look at what happened when iPhonewas released in 2007. Google bought one iPhone, deassemble it in its lab, and make another 2000 Androidphones. based on , of course, iPhone.

I can't help but to wonder what is your qualification for writing articles like this? You are missing the whole po intof Apple product and you should rea lly go back and study how Apple ope rate. Apple doesn't comparehardware specs, it compares with it self, Steve Jobs always talk about the improvement over it's lastgeneration. Also, it's not about the hardware that counts, it's the ease of in tegration. Also, your bel oved Xoom is$600 after subsidize (with 2 years of contract) oh yea that is real cheap.....

But anyways, you and other peop le probably won 't agree with anything Apple say or do simply because youdislike Apple. But, at the end of the day when industry, hospital, and school are all using the iPad 2 and havegreat success you can come back and pu t a oops I was wrong a t the end of the article.

Posted By James, Orlando, Florida: March 6, 2011 8:22 AM

Why can't a technology "journalist" understand the simple fact of why Apple is so popu lar? This isn't about the

hardware and speed , it's not about 500,000 apps. It's about being first to market with a format for softwaredevelopers to sell their products. Google, MS and anyone else is too late to the game and gets irritatedbecause they aren't seeing the obvious. Ok, you make an "equal" device from a ha rdware perspective but theyaren't selling, why?Verizon fought for years to get the iPhone even though they had one the Android, why?Don't be predictable Seth...step ou tside the bounds of writing the "easy" article and do some real analysis.

yes, most of you got it right. me also blaming apple for making product with something that supposed to beavailable from the beginning like camera on first ipad. but remember this, there will be no zune if there is noipod; there will be no samsung ga laxy, nexus one, or any smartphone runni ng android if there is no iphone;

there will be no tablet if there is no ipad; there will be no so called market, software store, windows store or whatever they called if there is no app store. if you don't like what apple done till now, why don't you make anew products line, something that apple hasn't think about. something genuine, something that will take all themarket worldwide. why? because they just know how to copy

Not to stur the pot or anything but someone hit it right the general poulation who buy these devices do NOTwatch the keynotes. Instead they buy these products because they are trending and people buy into marketing. They buy them like sillybandz. People will buy ipad 2, not because of the specs, speed or even iOS, but rather just cause someone told them you need to ge t it and it's the greatest. Pretty sure if they came out withsillybandz 2 people would jump on it because someone say's its the best. But look at these trends they are

most of the time not superior and just stupid. Now I'll be the first to admit i don't like apple, but i do like their ipodand iphone. I also haven't played with android os very much but I can tell you iOs is more visually pleasing tome. Apple produces great software they always have, however they always did lack in hardware. Letscompare them to cars. Chevy 1500 vs. fords f-150. Chevy is to apple as Ford is to all o thers. Engine ishardware the rest is software. Chevy has a 5.3 liter and ford has a 5.4 liter. The 5.3 beats th 5.4 not because o f the hardware bu t the rest of the truck(the software) works with the hardware better. Apple is good at makingtheir os work with thei r hardware (go figu re). But I don't think they have the best device. hardware makes thedevices capabilities, software utilizes it. Apple makes use of their hardware through their software others suchas Android ad Microsoft haven't accomplished this as well. But if you were to put on ios on a tablet with better hardware and tweak the os to work with the hardware that would make that tablet better than the ipad. Bothsides have good qualities. But lets face it apple leaves out hardware when they make products forcing you tohave to buy the next gen . for example the the ipod touch. when it first came out no apps. pretty boring. so thenthey updates ios witht the app store. cool, but why couldn't they do this before? What about the hiddenBluetooth? that the activated later on with a paid upgrade or adding the camera? they could have added oneearlier, sure it would have made the ipod little thicker but they didn't to save their reputations. Then they addthe camera say 720 p but forget to mention that the camera is a less than 1 megapixel camera producing prettybad pictures. Plus, i bet a flash will be added in the next version. apple leaves technology out to make itappear their device is getting better but in actually other companies hardware is superior with apples softwareseems to be a little be tter tuned to fit the hardware that they have. Apple is about manipulating the market.Their legacy would have never have started if it weren't for the original ipods. They got lucky and that is why

there are fanboys for apple. If microsoft came out with their own hardware i bet they could compete with appletoe to toe, not because of their os or their hardware but simply because they could tweak both to run likeapples. and not for nothing bit iOS is not great performance wise. it lags at random times and crashes andlocks up. Some of those are due to developers programming but a lot of them are due to not enough ram tosupport the activity. i would love to be able to criticize both the os 7 and android and their supporting hardwarebut like i said i have little experience with them i can only go by what i read and hardware facts support os 7and android. So me without decent hardware you cant have a decently running os, unless the os is"downgraded" to work with the lack of hardware. To me iOS is only built to the potential of the hardware. if apple had better hardware iOS could be even better and accomplish more.

I am absolutely stunned that Fortune would let such a poorly written immature rant to be published under their umbrella.

I don't have any problem with an objective article having a negative or cautionary view of anything Apple or anyone else manufactures. My problem is with the childish, or should I say babyish vindictive tone that the

@Henry 3 Dogg:

Spoken like a true Apple fanboy. You seriously think the technologically inclined dislike Apple because their

OS is too easy to use compared to Windows? I run *nix-based OSes around the house, and I still want nothingto do with the current line of Apple products. It has nothing to do with some fear of ease o f use. It's because:

1) Apple's products force you to operate in a "walled garden" environment where they choose what appsare/are not appropriate for you to run. That is, unless you decide to play the cat-and-mouse game of jailbreaking with them.

2) With Apple, you're paying a premium for the UI. I'll admit; Apple's interfaces are slick, generally reliable, nicelooking , and easy to use. But I don't care about UI's. I care about how quickly and efficiently the machine cancomplete its tasks. It's the same reason I use VLC media player for playing videos and music: the in terfacemight be awful, but it'll play anything you throw at it.

3) Apple's emphasis on marketing gets under my skin. I admit this isn't a solid technological reason to bashApple, but it makes you question where their priorities are as a company when they float their claims on a seaof equal parts fact, propaganda, and fanboyism.

Basically, it comes down to the fact that Apple generally places form over function and charges the consumer extra for their (gorgeous but hamstrung) devices. The fact that they have an army of near-mil itant followers whoturn blind eyes to the BS doesn't help either.

Marketing: Every company chooses to add and leave off what the feel is not relevan t to their product, hence theterm marketing. After all, there is on ly so much room on the cereal box to post the ingredients - have you readone of those lately?

Android smandroid- Apple will still out sell all the other devices combined and you know why? Because theyjust work.

Seth. I listened a month ago, and I heard small. In Samsungs edi ted recording I hear smooth, in a context thatmakes smooth nonsense.

But if Samsung distributed a transcript that said small, and people quote it, then you have no basis to call themliars, or to imply that their research was inadequate.

You should be big enough to admit that you're wrong.

It's called "marketing" - you push your features, and make the areas where others have strengths sound lessimportant. Guess what? Every company does it. You don 't tell the nuance to the truth that makes your productappears in a lesser light. Ask yourself this, if you are considering innovation,Whats Next? You tell me, realistically. Good Luck.

Posted By Anonymous: March 5, 2011 1:15 PM

The real question is not whether Seth hates Apple, but why.

It's not that unusual. The most common reason I've found amongst people who know anything aboutcomputers, is the fear that Apple renders all of the arcane knowledge that they've accumulated, worthless.

You see, if you've lived around windows for years, and you're the person who knows which registry settings totweak to make windows talk to Samba, how to interrupts in the b ios, and what the VGA memory window is. If you can read a BSofD and reboot in safe mode and resolve the conflicts, basically is you can paper over theholes in Windows, then you are a hero, with value.

And MacOS cancels that value.

It doesn't even leave a whole pile of new arcane witchcraft to learn, because basically anyone can sort the vastmajority of MacOS issues. So there's not even a way to regain that value.

This tends not to worry the competent, because they know that this just leaves them free to do more usefulthings.

But it terrifies the marginally competent who have either made their living, or just gained kudos, by knowingthat bit more than most others.

Posted By Tom, San Jose CA: March 5, 2011 11:47 AM

I'll admit I'm one of the so-called Apple haters. But I have to take issue with what one of the many commentersbelow sa id. I don't remember who it was but they basically said that the fact is that once somebody tries anApple product they never go back.

That is quite untrue. I currently have a macbook pro because i t was given to me by the schoo l I'm attending. Iabsolutely ha te this thing but when I first got it I was excited to get it and try it out. Now, whenever I have achance I do all of my homework on a Windows based PC. And i t's not just me. I know a ton of peop le that arethe same way.

Now, yes, Apple is selling a lot of iPads but from my experience it's not because the iPad is so much better than the competition (it may be I don't know) but because Apple does have a lot of fans that think Apple an do

Page 13: IPAD-2 Reality

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ipad-2-reality 13/54

no wrong. Don 't get me wrong, Microsoft has the same kinds of fans.

I've read just as many bad reviews about the iPad as I have good reviews so in my opinion the "Market share"of Apple's products really i sn't all that great of a way to measure their products.

Looks like we need to try to see through the Weintraub Distortion Field. Yes, Jobs puts a pro-Apple spin onthings, but you seem to be willfully misunderstanding and/or misrepresenting his points here. For example, it'strue that the Xoom is comparable in features to the higher-end iPads, but the point is that there are a lot of iPadoptions below where the Xoom starts. And you compare hardware features that the Xoom has (as Jobspredicted pundits would) without recognizing the rather obvious fact that the iPad's huge advantage issoftware-based -- namely the ease and consistency of the iOS experience and the number (and quality) of apps available for it. You'll forgive me if I choose not to drink the Koolaid you're offering.

Non-iPad tablets haven't been shipping in volume. Just because you've used a tablet, doesn't mean that it'sshipped in volume. From the wall street journal now

"Samsung executive Lee Young-hee said Galaxy Tab sales were "quite smooth," according to a recording of the company's conference call with analysts. This post relied on a transcript of the call, which quoted her erroneously as saying they were "quite small." Samsung said the transcript, done by a third party and initiallycited by a company spokesman, has since been corrected."

Note. A Samsung spokesman cited the original transcript. You owe mr jobs an apology since he based hiscomments on those cited by a Samsung spokesman.

But I don't suppose he'll get one . To a journalist truth seems to be a commodi ty bought and sold.

This article seems like sensationalism at it's best. I believe i t is meant to attract clicks, not develop readershipthrough great content.

It is true that most of apples "i" products do not lead the market in terms of specs. But side by side , ask peoplewhich one they would prefer to use and the "i" product will win almost everytime.

I do agree that in this "post-pc era" it is about the user experience. All of these products have basically thesame baseline processors and graphics. The real difference is how the software is coupled with the hardware. This is why apple is winning.

To quote John Gruber in reference to the iPad 2, "It's a shame, almost, that we squandered the term "personalcomputer" 30 years ago."

So then the iPodcame out and I was totally blasted away with the Nano because I was in the Army and everyone had one, butwith my Nano, I could work out and not worry about weight sliding down my arm. The nano didn't have videosupport though. So all the sand gets deep into my pc and there's this mac with a solid unibody... that lookedlike something really sturdy... So I used it and it was phenomenal how easy it all was... Next thing I knew I hada mac... but it didn't stop there...

so I saw an iphone 3g on the shelves... this touch screen phone that was totally affordable... So I bought one.Now I'm looking at an Ipad 2! Holy geez!

Alexandr,You're claiming that consumers aren't smart enough to tell high qua lity technology from junk? Would you notagree that even a caveman could do that? They need on ly get one in theirs hands and compare. What'sludicrous is the idea that because you know some cute numbers and specs that you know which productsomeone will enjoy and take advantage of most. With that said, Android has been producing tablets of its own for months now with little more than a ripple in the"tablet market." Please explain the lack of enthusiasm for their products and their incredibly low POS numbers. Also, would you care to explain the massive amount of upcoming tablets delayed or terminated altogether fromthe mere sight of the new iPad? And you who claims to know so much about the industry, please explain howan iPad with a lower amount of on-boa rd RAM and a supposed "slower" processor still crush its competitors interms of performance and efficiency...

Posted By Jackson, Denver, Colorado: March 5, 2011 1:04 AM

It's just sad, because obviously this article was not written by someone well versed in the tech industry and thetrue ins and ou ts of every product but, in fact, someone onl y well versed in the g iven specs without any actualbenchmark testing, side by side comparison, or other such testing done to back up the claim in this article. Thenumbers (10000GB of RAM or 100000MP) mean nothing when the OS can't even keep up with it's own

processor. 3G on a $499 tablet doesn't mean squat when the service is spotty at best. Nor does a flimsy flash, when you coul d compare it to the light given off by a lit match... Apple doesn't build products before they can beperfected (for the current materials and means o f production). They wait until they can deliver a gorgeous, unibody, thin, lightweight, product with all of those features before doing so. They aren't in the business of giving consumers a pil e of junk before its time. (iPhone 4 is the first incident of its kind with Apple and, in myopinion, the incredible innovation that went into it's creation may have ultimately been a pain for iPhone 4owners but opened the door to more amazing, problem-free, products in the near future).

You knock Apple for bending reality? Look in the mirror.

There is no product like the iPad. There is no p roduct that can do EVERYTHING it can with thePERFORMANCE it has. Period.

Posted By Jackson, Denver, Colorado: March 5, 2011 12:54 AM

To be perfectly honest, the whole "i" franchise is somewhat of a ludicrous technology carnival side show. Appledo no t create better products, they create mediocre products that as Alexander, David, Panama havementioned "does the job it was designed for" The funny thing is, what IS the job the iPad was intended for?Apple has captivated the masses because they're very clever magicians. They know that the masses don'tknow much about gadget specifications (which to be honest is somewhat of an embarrassment consideringthat we DO live in a technologically driven age) Most people who buy Apple have been brainwashed by thewhole franchise into beli eving that it's the best out there because if everyone is using it, it therefore must be thebest. The iPad specs. are a joke compared to other tablets out there on the market such as the new-kids-off-the-block "Motorola Xoom" and the "Samsung Galaxy Tab" I'm not going to discuss specs here because youcan readily find them all over the internet. For Apple it seems "good enough" is just "good enough" which makes no sense because technology is allabout evolution to more efficient forms not about conforming with what is. We make new things because weexpect them to be be tter than their predecessor.Apple's initial marketing tactics i.e. The sadly famous presentations by Jobs, has gotten to the point where it'sbecome somewhat of a bandwagon for "techie wannabe 's" "wowing" and "ooing" at Job's captivating salefigures and future projections. Apple always comes out with some "new" gimmick and the gullible's fall for iteach and every time. Personally I think the Apple franchise should be killed as quickly and as quie tly aspossible because it's becoming an embarrassment to technology and to those who care about what we buy.Remember, in the end Apple couldn't give two hoots about their market as long as they buy their mediocreproducts over and over.

Know what you're buying and see if it's better or you just might as well throw away your money down the toilet.

Lots of factual errors and 'twisted truths' about the competition from Jobs. Is Apple getting paranoid with thecompetition? Seth, seTH, SETH!?

Don't be stupid. Listen to what he really said that is true:

For Tablets, it's not about Specs. It's about the User Experience. Yes, It's a long way off from what you're usedto, but let's do the math and display the slide that you effectively decided not to show:

iPad Apps >65000.Honeycomb Apps = 100.

Where are the Honeycomb developers? The Xoom developers? They have had a year to get things rolling. The Android Apps don't Sell on Andro id Phones. Their users prefer to get it free. And, as has been stated by afew people in the know, Honeycomb is like using Beta Software. Buggier than hell.

Next week Seth, we will see who is right. Google and its Android army of cheap knock offs won't repeat whatthey did in the phone space. There is no 2 for 1 special or get a new Honeycomb device when you sign up witha carrier. This competition will be based on pure User Experience.

Tell me you weren't impressed by the Garageband demo. Come on Seth, tell me you weren't impressed.

God bless Honeycomb !!Samsung tab, about it... once you have hands on that device you will know its not worth calling tablet anddefinitely not a iPad competitor, people are buying it because they live near to China market and can't find aApple store.

iPad has no competition, people writing articles and making products can just try to chase it.

You just don't get it!Apple is not about bigger ram, bigger speed, bigger screen, etc.Its about a well made product that does the job it was designed for, balancing software and hardware.Takes a lot to do this, and is true, they have to have control over it to be ab le to improve it.

And the end if you like the freedom on the PC and it junk Windows crashing, just stay there and be happy. We choose Apple for the pleasure of having something that works for us.

Seth, maybe the reality distortion is yours. Steve Jobs is 'rattled' by Androi d? Reall y?Seth, the man is has got death knocking on his door - and he i s still working regardless! I don't think Steve is'rattled' by such petty matters.

I don't think so either, seeing as how it's Apple software. Why would it be on a Samsung?

Posted By Pat: March 4, 2011 8:28 PM

Your comment would make sense if the iPhone was just an operating system and not a device. UnfortunatelyAndroid is just an operating system, and can be used by many d ifferent manufacturers, including Acer, Dell,HTC, LG, and Motorola. If one of those manufacturers had sold more devices than Appl e, THEN it would'veoutsold the iPhone. You woul d be more correct if you said there a re more Android OS's than iOS, but peoplearen't just buying a mobile OS. Sorry, but you're comparing apples to oranges.

Posted By Pat: March 4, 2011 8:23 PM

People respect a CEO for his company's innovative products and p rofitablility. At any presentation like thisyou're obviously going to have the company showing it's products in a positive light. Just look at how HP'swebOS was highlighted as "the best OS" over Android and iOS. Also, I'm not sure when you were a kid, but I'mpretty sure it wasn't called "lieing." At least when I was a kid it was called "lying." If you had written your postfrom a quality tablet such as an iPad, it would have auto-corrected for you.

Don't even talk about Bill. People simply bough t windows because they needed it. Bill didn't slam others or played demigod to sell his. He was not a clown but a producer. People buy ipads because Jobs says theyneed it. Even if Apple sells some kind of dancing potato at $200 people WILL BUY and therefore whole market

will make similar things. After all this madness is gone they will notice it was not normal. Tablets are not somuch useful like dancing potatoes.Do you know once Jobs removed cursor keys from keyboard to compel people to use mouse. In that timepeople said "Wow he's a genious. Yes we don't need any cursor keys. You are absolutely righ t.INNOVATION!People who use cursor keys are primitive" Someone who's not out of mind will never say like that nowadays. We're doing same things even now. Never learn a lesson. If you say "I'll buy everything even if you make ajunky thing" to a company then it surely will, no doubt. Be critical if you want something better, if you don't wantcursorless keyboard.

So the author is admitting that Apple has great marketing and an ability to persuade. However, peopl e don'tbuy iPads or iPhones because of keynotes. Keynotes and product announcements such as this one arewatched primarily by geeks, not by the general buying pub lic. Similarly, the consumer at large will have noidea about any of these statements or misquotes by Steve Jobs. They will the judge the product on its ownmerits.

Apple sold 14.8 million (in three quarters). That seems like a pretty fair comparison." is soodd...Samsung tablet I ve hardly seen on anybody's hand...might be only i n the showrooms....man u need to bea neutral person to be in ur profession....

I read the article, then read the comments; then looked back at the history of some Apple products and yessome of them were terrible but a good majority of them HAVE been industry changers. The iPad came out thenall of a sudden; BAM there are 20 competitors tablet devices to compete with the iPad. The same thinghappend with the iPhone and it's intuitive interface. The only thing people could come up with is "Where is thekeyboard" but then let look at the market now. How many touch screen devices are on the market that mimicthe iPhone are there? Same thing with the iPod. The fact is Apple has the courage to go first in introducingthese new technologies in mass then when they do an awesome job of selling it by any means possibleeveryone gets mad. The same thing happend to Bill over at Microsoft.

Posted By SCWSNelly Great Lakes, IL: March 4, 2011 4:39 PM

Very nicely pointed out article. Jobs all talk about how you feel , how you touch, how glamorous you can bewith the product but little on what's inside it.

iPad 2 = iPad 1 + two camera and HDMI. hardware upgrade expected from a new product.

I am trying to figure out the resolution of the cameras, all i know is it takes HD video.

Posted By Rudy, Redwood City, CA: March 4, 2011 4:07 PM

Define "better" on the screen. Higher resolution doesn't make something automatically better. The tech behindit does. The Xoom lacks IPS or LED backlighting, major enhancements to the iPad's display that give it its

gorgeous quality.

You know, there's one place where iPads and its competitors are about 50/50: the blogosphere. Scratch that, make it 70% Android.

I have no doubt that, with the business model of Microsoft+Google, there will be more Android tablets soldeventually. The hardware makers will rise up and disappear, just like the computer manufacturers of the past. The price will keep going down, margins will be razor-thin, but the "one party makes software, everybodymakes hardware" model is a great, if monopolistic, business model. Google will make lots of dough givingAndroid away.

Meanwhile, Apple will move on to more market innovation, producing both hardware and OS -- sort of likebody and soul, see? And they'll make money with less market share. Maybe most of the money in the sector.

I'd LOVE to see some real competition in the device market, but right now, with the Google-copycat model, it's

Page 20: IPAD-2 Reality

unlikely; until some new "control freak" genius focuses on the whole user experience.

Posted By Jim H, Glendale, CA: March 4, 2011 4:02 PM

I think that it will eventually catch up with Apple. A lot of peop le already view Jobs as an "expletive"!!! I own anduse both Microsoft and Apple products, simply because I create both Iphone and Windows based apps. I thinkother manufacturers employ similar tactics, but the difference is that Apple has set the bar so high for itself using phrases like "magical, beautiful, calling their staff Geniuses, etc..." that they should be criticized for when

they fall short of that mark even a little bit! And let's not forget that their competitors are also b illion dollar companies that are o ffering legitimate alternatives to app le products.

Eventually people will learn that they have choices. If Apple refuses to take a more consumer friendlyapproach to PR, they will end up with just the original core of apple Kool-Aid sipping groupies they had in the80's and 90's.

iPad. iPad? What the heck is an iPad?

Posted By John Smith, Rockville, MD: March 4, 2011 2:49 PM

The 90% sold comment, Jobs was comparing "Tablet PC" sales to ipad sales. Neither the nook, ipad, xoom, etc are "Tablet PCs". Jobs was referring to tablet PCs as devices running normal full b lown PC opera tingsystems that users interact with via a touch/stylus sensitive monitor. And yes, the ipad has blown tablet pcsales away, so on that note the author of this article is not a good fact checker. I do agree that apple wasdisingenuous by not listing the specs of the cameras, but truthfully, I don't know why there a re back facingcameras on any of these devices. They are too bulky to operate as still camera or a video camera. The formfactor of phones/ipods/etc are far better suited for taking pictures and video. Front facing cameras are grea t tohave for video conferencing though. But to sacrifice the least amount of battery life, ram, bandwidth, etc thefront facing camera doesn't need to be fancy. The back facing camera, is grea t to have, but you'll likely on ly useit twice ever if at all, otherwise you'd run the risk of looking like a giant idiot lugging around a huge ipad sizedthing to use as a camera. Lastly, for whatever reason, Jobs/Apple don't think you should to do true multitasking,so in the ipad , there's no real need for extra RAM. If you're trying to use an application or running multipleapplications that take up more than 512MB of ram, you should probably think about using a laptop or PCinstead... maybe even a tablet PC :-0 But if you're just checking your email, playing games, surfing the web or

Posted By RB- Bakersfield, CA: March 4, 2011 1:58 PM

Well, I see two different groups of people here. Hot-headed fanboys, and calm, cool, normal people.

I'll try not to overheat

Yes, the facts and figures presented at the iPad 2 's debut were somewhat twisted, but it's not the first timewe've seen such manipulation in the tech industry. Nonetheless, this causes me to lose respect for Jobs.

Now, about some of those so-called facts. Seth claims that the iPad's sales volume hardly competes with other

tablets. Seth, you dont just compare iPad to every other Android tabled in terms of sales volume. You don'tcompare a specific product to a widely-used OS. And I'll bet that in individual comparisons, few tablets evencame close to the iPad. Like R said, you don't see people running around with random Android tablets asmuch as iPads. When you're selling technology to the general public (not just us nerds) you have to lookbeyond the tech specs. You have to make something that people want . Or, if you're dang lucky enough, something that people actually need.

Oh, and just to point something out, Microsoft DID copy off Apple with Windows, but Apple actually copied off Xerox (yes, xerox) with the GUI. Xerox invented the GUI, but the creators couldn't convince the big-wig executives that GUI OSs were the future (epic fail). So I wouldn't go around all the time wi th that copycat/creator quote if you're trying to promote Apple. You're just stabbing yourself in the back.

What we do learn from Jobs speech, and from the replies to your article is that Jobs knows how to market to hisfollowers. To those who exist outside of a brand specific cult, we will take each marketing gig with a grain of salt and look at true usefulness and performance.

Even reading through the comments below, we find many of those who are pro-jobs show a misunderstandingof even the hardware specs listed. Some do no t know the purpose of ram, others seem to forget that Palm andBlackberry even existed pre-iphone.

I am glad these misconceptions exist. These are things that keep me in business as corporations look toupgrade and do not trust their employees to make these decisions.

"Samsung said the transcript, done by a third party and initially cited by a company spokesman, has sincebeen corrected."

Samsung THEMSELVES screwed up by ci ting the comments, thereby justifying it's authenticity. As such, although a misquotation, it is likely an honest mistake and not the conspiracy that it is implied to be.

Seth Weintraug' reality distortion takes its toll on truth

In Volume.

Of course, the Apple iPad 2 and Motorola Xoom has the same dual core processor, but the Motorola said theywould be shipping a total of 20 million smartphones and tablets combined in 2011. In fact Seth, thats 1.6million a month (both devices) or 800,000 per device shipping a month. Asymco's Horace Dediu points out thatnot only are Apple's volumes higher as Nielsen's chart indicates, but so are their margins and profits. Applehave already bought up 60% of the components, so of course Apple will ship more iPad 2's with dual coreprocessors than Xoom!

That leads us to:

Seth could you please remove the anplug out of your ***! If anybody can remember Samsung misquoted 2million sold instead of 2 million shipped, I can! Apple sold 14.8 million in 2010, it's funny when Gartner, NPD, &IDC said the iPad held a 90% market in 2010, but Seth the Great says not. What Seth is ihating a virus thatcause some people to be in denial. Boy those Motorola Atrix and Motorola Xoom numbers aren't looking sogood, but wait HTC, Samsung, and the other 20+ vendors are coming to the rescue from one Apple product!

Posted By Ran Da Man, Austin, Texas: March 4, 2011 12:59 PM

I am not biased either way, I looked at the product and compared the features and the Moto Xoom was a waybetter product/features for the price in my opinion . I have apple products too but the ipad 2 just couldn't standup to the xoom. I don't need 60,000 apps though either, the xoom has exactly what I was looking for in a tablet.Flash support, usb connection, SD card slot, 5 mp rear camera, front camera, 1080p video support, hdmi out,4g compatible and more.

If you define Volume as one day of Apple sales, then Yes, Dell is shipping in Volume over the LIFE of it'sproduct. If you call Volume say 1 Million a mon th, then Dell , Xoom and HP are NOT in volume.

On other fronts, have you tried the brick called the Galaxy. It is comically poorly designed . Size, balance, battery, and especially SW usability. Almost a joke...if you hadn't spent $400 on it. IT is really not about what Apple did to create such consumerism in gadget world. Even there, Apple never hadinvented anything. For all the money they make, they should have put some significant money in R&D andinvented something new. Remember, there was cell phone invention was done by Motorola. The smartphone

was there evebn before Apple came up with the first iphone. The touch screen technology was there evenbefore iphone in Moto Ming (in 2005 i believe) series of phones in China. But what apple had made isdefinitely improved those technologies and captivated the audience for itself and i definitely appreciate thateffort. They are doing something right to get to this level. But what i really am upset and annoyed with is thatApple is spewing all kinds of lies to kill the other companies (which had really contributed in the inventionswhich made apple rich) and make them rich. In that what we really miss is, without those companies (which arebeing killed), these products will not be in the market for Apple to make it better. I am not saying it will never bethere, but Apple with all the money they have had never put any serious effort to really INVENT anything newand that is a big problem. This truth distortion is really going to hurt all of us in future. Remember, if all thesecompanies with a lot of money, power and media might is only intended to truth distortion to promote their business profit, think about what that will do for the smaller ones which only survive on pure new invention. They just will not have any chance which will kill the future invention...Just for every one to think about...

What I'm loving is that we're even having this conversation. What weshould all agree on is that without Apple, we wouldn't have smartphones of such quality now, we wouldn't havetablets of impending quality, and we might not have slick laptops of such quality. Dell and Lenovo only cameout with higher grade materials in response to Apple pushing the envelope of materials engineering.

You have to change your point of view. Apple never claims over the edge technology, but earns huge moneyon ipod, iphone and ipad. So it is not the technology. Neither RAM nor CPU power. it is easy and fun to use anapple. Think about that.I checked android on galaxy s and galaxy tab. It is far far behind from apple (ipod and ipad). OK it is fast andshiny. but it senses my touch about half sec later, irresponsive and applications are just dull.. Maybe after honeycomb may it make a sense to talk about android vs ios.

Neither you nor Steve Jobs mentioned the over fifty Android apps that were pulled that day from Googles 'safe'Android Market Place because they contained 'The Mother of all Malware'!

Nor was there any mention that infected devices needed to be returned to the cellluar carrier to be replaced for saftey reasons.Simply deleting the apps wouldn't work as these apps downloaded addition malware that rooted the Androiddevice.

Android is a two edged sword which means some may be injured just enjoying all the 'free Android software'which has not been curated by Google as long as it displays advertising.

If Steve had really wanted to he could have destroyed Android by highlighting that news. Fortunately for Google that fantastic malware news got buried under the press coverage for iPad 2.

You must know that competers made that garbage copies because of the mental virus which was spread byJobs and says that "You need this tablet and this will change your life". Yeah that virus is the worst distortionwhich ruins the market and makes his haters and fanboys. Well, he made people need garbage(whether ipador not) and copycats benefit from that. The losers are only the people buying any garbages not makers of garbages. If you think rationally, you will notice that you don't need tablets at all. They are all garbages

regardless maker. So if SJ shuts up peple will no longer want garbage and market will be stablized andcompanies will manufacture what people really need.

You will allways be enslaved when you think someone other than you can tell you what you need.

I here this a lot with from Apple fanboys. If not for copycats we would still be using the first cell phone, the firstTV, the first radio. Rock and roll would be dead since Elvis has died, radio would be left with one channel, andwe would still be driving the Model T's. Copying other people ideas is what drives innovation and furthers usas a society. Yea, Apple made a cool product with the iPhone, yea the iPad is pretty cool. But their hasn't beenanything groundbreakingly new in this tech for years. The ones that are taking this idea and running with it areApple's competition because fanboys would buy something called iCrap if they made it, the competition arerequired to come up with new ideas, and better specs.

Do I give credit for Apple for developing a cool idea 5 years ago? Of course, I do. But there are a bunch of newproducts that's better now, I don't buy products because they came up with the idea, I buy products becausethey have taken that idea and expanded it.

What has Apple ever innovated? NOTHING! They didn't invent the MP3 player, the smartphone, the tabletcomputer, the GUI, or anything ... ever.

They're good at polishing 2 year old technology and marketing it to lemmings at high markups. I'll give themthat- They're very profitable. Innovative? Not on your life.

The iFad is just that- a fad. Like the iPhone, it too will sink to a 10% market share within a couple of years.

As for the Tablet wars, which are obviously just starting up, alot of it is going to come down to price, which"ecosystem" a consumer prefers, and finally utility. Currently, tablets are main ly a consumption device. Surethere are niche cases where they are being used in some "business" situations, but what all the commodityhardware vendors want (atleast for now) are the hearts and minds of the very large consumer market. Appleobviously has an advantage here...not just because of the large number of apps which Android will catch upwith (atleast with the ones people care about)...but because of iTunes. How long this advantage will last isanyone's guess, but it's there.

People really need to stop hating on Apple for no good reason. If it weren't for them, there would be no TabletWars for either fanboys to flame over. Makes me miss the iPod vs Zune flame wars.

I would like to add two things:

1. The first real android tablet is xoom. Android 3.0 is the ONLY version of Android that Google isrecommending for tablets. All the previous tablets (including the Samsung Galaxy) were sold with an OS thatwas not developed for tablets. Google was saying all along that Android 2.x was not ready for tablets. Thatshows you the confusion and the mess that the Android community is in.

2. It is unfortunate that the Android community is always competing on the feature to feature level and it is notcompeting on the grand philosophy and on providing the user with something different and something unique. It is very obvious that Android has adapted (copied) the UI experience from iOS. Microsoft on the other handhave come out with their own design and philosophy that gives a different alternative to the users(congratulations to them about that). It seems that Google is incapable of that, is copying iOS and is trying tocompete by adding more features (and complexity). Take a look at the embarrassing moments of Andy Rubinin AllThingsDigital as his showing honeycomb and he is told about the similarity of the UI with Apples's --http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koIzhLaRJJo -- Go to minu te 4. At minute 6.30 i t becomes very funny.

I say Android is not even a platform. How can it be winning iPhone except by number of people using.I say a SE mini running Android. That adds one user to Android count. But this one user do not use Android asa smartphone even though it is marketed as a smartphone. The screen is too small for any real smart usage. So yeah, ANdroid won on number of people using, but iPhone wins on profit and the things that count.

"Apple has just as many points of sale for the iPad as Samsung has for the Tab and likely many more."

Where you get this information? WRONG. Samsung Tab is sold in 100+ countries on 200+ carriers and I wouldexpect that points of sale total at least 500. Apple was only in 26 countries in Sept increasing to 46 in Dec. Inthe US, iPad is sold through 2 carriers while Samsung Tab is double or more that, plus sold at more 3rd partyresellers in US. iPads were only sold @ Apple and BBY up until October.

You should check you facts

Somehow I suspect this is Apple-specific excuse making which rather undermines it's credibility.

Posted By J eff Ratcliff, San Diego, California: March 4, 2011 2:35 AM

I'm with Jobs here for the most part. Ok, a couple tablets shipped with dual cores before the iPad 2, but he'sright. They haven't shipped i n volume. They've probably sold fewer of those than Apple's hobby, the Apple TV.

I've seen third pa rty sources quote a 92% market share a few times. The article below says 93% last quarter.

http://www.abiresearch.com/press/3621-4.5+Million+Media+Tablets+Shipped+in+3Q-2010Near 90%http://www.internetretailer.com/commentary/2011/03/01/apple-aims-gobble-market-share-ipad-2

Even if the Xoom has 3G builtin it still doesn't make it less expensive than all three o f Apple's wifi models. Noteveryone needs 3G. Expandable storage in SD cards comes wi th it's own set of problems. I don't think it makesit better. Apple's memory is certainly faster and it's not that much more to upgrade to 64GB than buy a 32GB SDcard.

Regardless of the minor increase i n resolution I'd rate the iPad screen better just for IPS. Have you used anIPS screen? For a tablet you have laying on a table, in your lap or holding at other odd angles it's an extremelyimportant feature. The screen ratio on the iPad also makes more sense then Xoom's 16:9 for anything besidesmovies. I don't know what Motorola thought they were making? A $799 video playback device?

I'll still maintain that people aren't going to hold up a la rge tablet to take still photos. The camera in the iPadshould be sufficient.

Honestly, I don't think the RAM does matter as much for this type of device. It basically loads one program at atime and most, I'd almost say most all of them won't use 512MB. I can a lways swap back to the last app I wasusing without reloading it on the iPhone 4. iOS does a better job unloading unused memory than Android has

Page 30: IPAD-2 Reality

done in the past.

The Tab and Streak are bo th over sized phones with al most no apps written for their larger screen. I can'tbelieve you a re even trying to compare to them to the iPad. I wouldn't buy any of them for the camera and myphone makes a better pocket map than they do.

I'd like to see the i Pad get some competition too, but trying to argue that the tablets released to date competewith the iPad is crazy.

This is just marketing. You are do ing the exact same thing in the o ther direction. Here, you convenientlymention positive stats about these but leave ou t huge poin ts like screen size. These two tablets should bemuch much cheaper than the ipad, because they only have 7 inch screens. Yet, they are the same price. Oppenheimer's Yair Reiner: The just unveiled iPad 2 offers the kind of incremental improvements consumershave come to expect from a second-generation Apple device. While it doesn't include any new breakthroughfeatures or functionalities, the sum total of its refinements and upgradesthinner, lighter, faster, moreconnectedsignificantly enhance the device's overall appeal. The closest historical parallel would be theiPhone G2.5 to 3G transition, whose slew of relatively minor upgrades allowed sales to more than triple in theproduct's second year. This is a sad day for the crowd of competitors still struggling to home in on the firstiPad's price and performance. We continue to see Apple grabbing 75-85% of the tablet market in 2011.

Posted By Mike, Sarasota FL: March 3, 2011 11:07 PM

One other comment. Lets ponder on something here, had there been no Apple we may be toting around ~4LBrotating screen Windows 7 pen tablets with 2 hour battery life and a bajillion apps but oh wait hmm theconsumers didn't buy into that vision. The other alternative? Chrome OS notebooks/tablets, gee where arethese? Instead everyone is taking notes and making a copy of Apple's move. Take a mobile OS CocoaTouchand move it to a larger device and build upon the larger device's benefits. Google had to do the same to followsuit and so has Palm's webOS. I do wish them both well since a competitive ecosystem spurs innovation.

Particularly in this emerging commodity space which so much mirrors the evolution of smart phonesin that the real growth is among normal people (in other words, not technology zealots who live on forums andrant and rave)

Is Jobs a pitchman? Clearly. Are these product announcements theater? Absolutely. Does that matter? Not atall.

End of the day, normal people don 't listen to keynotes, nor do they read any of this stuff. Sorry to the geeks, butthere just isn't that level of influence in play here.

Apple is sh ifting a lot of these uni ts. Far more than any other competitor. Whether you want to spli t hairs over the definition o f "volume", is up to you, but anyone suggesting that the Galaxy Tab or Xoom are run away

Page 36: IPAD-2 Reality

successes at iPad scale is being ridiculous.

And all of these people with iPads bought them because they saw a TV commercial, saw one on a plane or train, or wandered into Apple's *heavily subscribed* retail stores that have become near events in themselves(always amazing to me how packed these stores are)

Like it or hate it to the core of your blessed geek soul, Apple has managed to excite *normal people* abouttechnology *and* gotten them to spend PILES.

As a result, Steve's keynote could actually be a LOT more over the top. It's the competition that actually haseverything to prove.

Sure "Android" is shifting a lot of phones, but they are available on every carrier at every price point in everycategory.

"Android" has become the "or other" counterpoint to the iPhone. That the *entire industry* has managed to*finally* surpass *one device* that has been on *one carrier* from a monolithic manufacturer despite *all* theefforts of both Google *and* Microsoft is actually kind of mind boggling, and not in a good way.

I'd like to see Android tablets do as well as the phones if for nothing else than to see some diversity, but so far this battle is very much looking to be up hill.

"noting the factual errors that kept coming up minute after minute " ... you only po inted to four points in 70+minutes... hardly minute by minute.

True, the Samsung quote as mistake by Steve Job's handlers and/or researchers. I will give you this one.

The other points are marketing angles or spin... practiced by all.

You are as guilty of spin and hyperbole in your presentation as SJ.

Critical commentary is great but taking a stand would be VALUABLE.

So at the end of the day today, if you were to buy one, which would it be???

Posted By Stu, Raleigh, NC: March 3, 2011 4:28 PM

You wrote, "In volume."

Nope, Dell 's Streak has not even been mentioned by any of the firm's measuring the table t market, NPD, IDC,etc. They only mention the iPad and the SGT.

The "quite smooth" correction got far less media notice than the "quite small". It was NOT "thoroughlydebunked", as the rest of the quotes from Ms. Lee implied slow sales. Smooth or small, sales are not glowing.

You wrote, " So Samsung sold 2 million (in the last quarter) in 2010. Apple sold 14.8 million (in three quarters). That seems like a pretty fair comparison."

Utter TRIPE. You know, as well as anyone else, that there is a one-time bump when you fill the channel the firsttime. This distorts sales figures. If you are trying to calculate "market share", you try to back out the distortion of filling the channel.

As for pricing, you are creating a STRAWMAN. Steve did NOT compare models, he just pointed ou t that Apple

Page 37: IPAD-2 Reality

8/7/2019 IPAD-2 Reality

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ipad-2-reality 37/54

had 5 models that sell for less than the Xoom. Who's making up lies?

As for screen, it's not "much better, bigger". In fact, in terms of square inches, I've been told, that since the iPadis closer to a square than the Xoom, the iPad is "bigger". Either way, neither is "much", so who again is lying?

Sadly, your prejudice distorts your view.

As far as I can tell, of your points there was no t one lie. Only your si lly distortions.

Apple's competitors in the Tablet space are garbage. They have come to the game one-year late with productthat does not even approach a first generation IPad. Sure the hardware specs are impressive but thesedevices are driven by software and honeycomb - they should call stuckinhoney because it's so darned slow -just gets owned by TouchOS.

To all idiots (Apple fanboys, in case you missed that), article is about distorting facts. Author has done a decentjob of defending the title.

It is a fact that Apple has always distorted facts. End of day it is us (consumers) who are taken as idiots whowould believe anything that SJ says. To me that is kind of insulting, I am sure fan boys don't see it that way.Steve is not going to share his profits with you so stop being a rat and stop following the pide piper. Startthinking for a second and be a true consumer and maybe then finally you will see the light.

Well, it was a presentation , i.e. a long commercial, trying to put the new iPad2 in a great light. Ok, Mr. Jobs gotsome facts distorted, but he was advertising his product in the end.I can thoroughly look at the specs and make comparisons and so on. It's good that other people can read thisand understand it's not 100% like in the keynote. However, the keynote was pretty catchy as always.

steve jobs' reality distorton feild has been notorious even within apple since the early macintosh days.

Posted By mytharak: March 3, 2011 3:18 PM

Ha ha ha. This article is so foolish and funny.

Steve Jobs deliberately misquoted Samsung's VP to SLAP Samsung in the face. You missed the entire point of using the old quote.

Samsung DID NOT SELL 2 mill ion tablets to consumers. They REFUSED to divulge their actual sales. The 2million "sold" is actually what they shipped to dealers not what was actually sold to consumers.

Apple only quote ACTUAL SALES TO CONSUMERS. Thus, when Steve Jobs says Apple has > 90% marketshare for tablets, this is ACTUALLY THE TRUTH!

Only if Samsung can come clean on real sales numbers to consumers rather than dance around the truth bysaying sales were "smooth" will be have the actual facts. But Steve Jobs is correct unless Samsung comesclean with better real numbers.

Hardly anyone buys the Del l Streak 7 nor the Xoom. To Apple, "volume" means MILLIONS, not hundreds.SURE, you can say the ZUNE also ships in "volume" - but then hardly anyone has a Zune. Apple is right - theiPad2 will be the only tablet to ship in volume - as in MILLIONS of tablets, not hundreds.

Lame arguments in this article, each of which made apple look good again (darn it).

Criticizing Apple for spinning its keynote? Most of the criticisms mounted here resort to even more egregiousspin. I'll give two examples-- the first slide clearly says "first dual core tablet..."-- but in your criticism you refer tothe numbers of your smart phone-- not a table t-- in order to make your argument seem more substantial. That'sa no-no. Another example, you criticize the 90% tablet market share claim by using sales figures for the Nook

and Kindle-- both of which are ereaders, not tablets, which you know, but which you also know might fool areader who didn't know the difference. Another big no-no.

I was excited to read your po ints, but this is a collection of laughab ly false contrasts that makes the PC marketlook pitiful if this is what they're armed with.

Posted By maximus, new york, ny : March 3, 2011 1:39 PM

Really, the rabid Apple bashing just isn't useful in the least. Read Scobleizer's take on the iPad2 for a muchmore realistic and consumer-oriented approach to this topic. Basically, if the machine has no apps, what theheck does it matter if a few specs are a wee bit more impressive (not even significantly more, mind you) than amachine with thousands of apps available? The reality distortion is in this article--not iPad corp-speak at therelease yesterday. I promise you that.

I think comparing apples and oranges qualifies as distorting reality. The same criticism applies to bringing upNooks, which are crippled Android devices, and tablet PCs.

As for XOOM shipping in volume, Weintraub should check facts instead of specu lating. XOOM may be acomparable tablet that is shipping in volume, but we wouldn't know that from Weintraub's distorted reality.

You're a typical Android Fanboy, who talks about everything else that doesn't really matters to both people andWall Street. People love the iPad and they will love the iPad 2 for the same reasons; which are price, simplicity,Apps and quality. I guess, I missed all the articles from you on how these Android tablets are having a hardtime staying on the shelves and Best Buys being crowded from people who can't wait to see and play withthem.

Wall Street loves Apple and the same admiration isn't there for Google. Apple products are selling, regardless

what the case is, they're selling. Apple has monetized the App Store, only the way Google could dream of for Android. They just paid out 2 billion to developers and I bet you, Android hasn't crossed 100 million.Regardless, how many Android phones sell, people don't buy apps for it like they do with iOS. We developersare left trying to monetize with ads; which Gen Y never touches on. Impressions may be high but what aboutconversion; which is what really matters. Majority of the time, you are dealing with the dumb smartphone user, who just got the phone because the sales rep told them it's cool, you can do these cool things and it's cheap. Inmany cases, this is their first computer and just li ke the web back on the day with ads, they cli ck but don't buy or sign-up. The quality of apps on Android to iOS isn't even a discussion. Android needs to create better tools for developers and until so, you will see everyone developing for iOS first and them second.

Seth, you really need to wake up and get off Apple's back. They're great at marketing and building up the hype, why blame them for something every company should be good at, instead of piss poor. They take value in their products and have expectations to create and set the bar high, while everyone else plays catch up. Everytablet coming out is copying the form factor of the iPad, WTF? Be different, try something di fferent but no. Everycompany lies or exaggerates about numbers, you know that. I just bought a Xoom and it does not have 100apps for Honeycomb, more like 50.

The most important thing is not market share but profit share and Apple is currently dominating that on allverticals of tablet, smartphone and mobile operating system. You clearly need to go back to school and learnthe importance of being in business. It's about money and brand and not about keeping geeks and fanboys

Posted By Jason, Ann Arbor, MI: March 3, 2011 1:17 PM

Seth,I'm some where in the middle on your article. I do think that Apple adn their minni ons has over-blown the iPad2 launch. I'm in the middle on somethings they stated as opin ion that you argue aren't true (ie ship numbers).I disagree when it comes to hardware specs. Ultimately as a consumer, I care about how a device performs not

its specs. Comparing iOS devices to android devices on specs alone isn't acurate because the two OS'soperate differently (can you imagine a pc shipping with 256k of ram? My iPad with 256k performs some tasksbetter than my PC with 2 GB of ram.) and the app lications for the platform are built to the specs of the device. Ialso don't really see someone taking 8 x 10 qual ity pictures with any tablet just "snapshots." With that in mindand above a certain point, megapixels don't matter.

What I really want to see at side by side comparisions of a XOOM and an iPad 2 pe rforming identical tasksconsistent with their purpose(webpage load ing, lite document editing, presentations, video conferencing, photos [4 x 6] and photo ed iting). At that point, someone can decide which is better.

Posted By John, Cincinnati, OH: March 3, 2011 1:12 PM

I guess you can write an a rticle like this as long as you don't also refer to yourself as a journalist. Having an ITbackground you should also understand that user happiness is not measured by the sum of the hardwareparts. Take some time and actually talk to a few typical users who don't work in the industry.

Thank You

Posted By Roger, Toronto, Ontario: March 3, 2011 1:05 PM

Seth -

Nicely done. I'm an Apple fan, and I think the iPad 2 is going to sell like crazy. I'm not a fan of pointless bashing(and I've not hesitated to criticize you when you have done it a couple of times in this column). But this isn'tpointless bashing. It's actually relevant to Google 24/7, and somebody needs to call out Apple every now andthen for their distortion. You make a number of good poin ts regarding the first two slides. I think SJ is trying tocreate a self-fulfilling prophesy by continually calling the competition DOA. Apple thinks they have a chance tocreate an iPod-like dominance in this space, to the point where others just quit trying.

All that being said, the Xoom simply doesn't compare favorably with iPad2 on price. You can argue tech specs, but if a consumer wants to buy a poli shed, full size tablet for as little money as possible, they will NEVERchoose the Xoom. While the most comparable iPad is on ly a bit cheaper than the Xoom, a price consciousconsumer won't choose this particular iPad; they will spend $499. Apple 's ASP is only slightly above $600 for their entire iPad linup, confirming that many buyers favor the cheapest option possible. The Xoom, for its

wonderful feature set, is only available in a single configuration, and it is probably priced exactly like the $729iPad, with the extra $70 going to the slightly improved screen, vastly better optics, and card reader. The Xoomis fairly priced, but it is 60% more expensive than the base model iPad. And for $499, buyers get exactly thesame experience as they would for the beefier models. Many will never ge t to even 16GB of media storageand will never crave a cellular radio. One need not spend $800 to sit on the couch and read the news.

So far, the only way for Android to match Apple on p rice has been by cutting the devices in half. I'm sure thiswill change as components standardize, but right now Apple has managed to create the best product for thelowest price. They are in a sweet spot, and as a result the public are willing to completely ignore Apple 's BSmarketing figures. At the end of the day, the message is true enough that nobody bu t you seems to care.

You make the same mistake he does. Does that make the iPad or Xoom better? I have no idea . I haven't profiled apps on e ither device. Itdoes mean it's not an apples to apples comparison.

What's the take-away? We all sell what we like, and put down what we don't. We all feel the need to rationalizeour positions, even when they're wrong.

It seems that you know nothing about what it is to have a good echo-system. I suggest you to buy some Appleproducts to learn it!

Food for thought - think about how many facts you have "twisted" to support your article. For example

1) Xoom has better and bigger screen. Man, since Xoom has a bigger screen than iPad's, it needs to have adisplay with higher resolution even to provide the display quality of iPad's. Talk to Xoom owners. All of them Iknow (only a few in numbers) complained that the screen is bigger for everything other than watching video. What a crap it is to spend the money on?

2) "People are really fighting to get their hands on a Samsung" Even Samsung won't say that. Did they higher you? Or are you looking for a job there?

3)"Perhaps Jobs could have also compared the iPad 2 to other Android tablets' prices?" - No one consider them as tablets

4)"and have better cameras" - apple didnt announce the specs for iPad's camera. Without knowing the specs, you are making this statement... It shows that your article is totally baseless and pointless and you just want towhine about nothing!

People are really fighting to get their hands on a Samsung! Like hell the are. Well, maybe in some alternativedimension, bu t not this one. For what I can see, the iPad has 100% of the market, minus a few near-sightedshoplifters who grabbed an expensive-cheapo-tablet in their haste to leave the store.Or Techies who need something bad to repair.

So Jobs uses only the facts that provide an advantage to his product? All companies do this. The onlydifference here is that some people don't bother to question anything from apple or Jobs. A lot of apple peopleare exactly like the superbowl add.

I didn't think this article was too far off base and made some leg itimate arguments, but the author's sarcasticcomments inserted into the comments themselves make him appear hostile, which caused me to question thearticle itself.

Forget Job's distorted presentations (at least he didnt call the ipad2 magical 20 times)

The real shock is apple's done nothing to improve the archaic OS. So the new ipad is still a grid of apps. Noreal multitasking; no live apps on the home screen. The notification system that looks like it was developed inthe 1980's. Handcuffed to Itunes for the simplest file transfers? ridiculous.

So IPAD 2: A faster, thinner version of a badly designed OS.

The Specs have caught up to the Motorola Zoom (minus the usb, sdcard, and standard hdmi port) Certainly didnot leapfrog the zoom. Im sure there will be several android tablets that leapfrof the ipad before ipad3 comes

out. Apple is falling further behind. The model is simply broken. One manaufacturer can not complete with therest of the planet.

In seems like you a re the one that is trying to distort the facts or misinterpreting them; either that or haveproblem reading the English language. The slide clearly stated "First dual core tablet TO SHIP in volume". Thekey words are "TO SHIP". During his speech, he also pointed out that he believes this is going to be the firsttablet "TO SHIP" in volume and not have already "SHIPPED" in volume.

As you have stated, the word "Volume" could be subjective and can be debatable; but I was not aware that

Page 46: IPAD-2 Reality

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ipad-2-reality 46/54

Dell's Streak 7 was selling that well at all. I definitely do not know of any remotely interesting in buying one or even plan to buy one. As of XOOM, it just came out, there are no sign of any store with lines o f people waitingto purchase one. The news I have heard so far has been that the unit is not flying off the shelves and at theentry level price of $799, it is highly doubtful they ever will. As for Atrix also, I do not know any one having oneor plann ing to ge t one. Of course, if later one, if either Atrix and/or XOOM turned out to be successful and trulyselling in high volume or that iPad 2 turns out to be a flop without anybody wanting to purchase it, that couldultimately prove Steve Jobs to be wrong; but once again, at XOOM entry price and the ridiculously complexplug-ins and add-ons for both, I would not want to place my be t on them. We will see.

As for your price of XOOM, it does not matter if $799 rea lly should be comparable to the $729 version of theiPad 2, the fact is Motorola simply does not have a lower entry level price for the XOOM will make a bigdifference in the consumer's ultimate purchasing decision not to mention the fact that $799 is still HIGHER than

$729. The opinion that XOOM is simply better is clearly also just your personal opi nion that seems few peoplewill share. It just different people put d ifferent values for the features they preferred. You clea rly liked the tabletto be more in the HDTV style of the stretched aspect ratio over the more conventional book's aspect ratio andthe built-in USB/SD Card reader. Others prefer long battery life, conventional book aspect and their new SmartCover. As for amount of RAM, you are clearly showing a heavy bias by stating that it must have ha lf of XOOM's1GB without knowing the number for the iPad 2 . You could be right, but you could also just as wrong. The factis simply you DON'T know. Of course, for most consumer, that actual number does not even matter as long as itcan run the apps they want smoothly. That is probably that reason why that number was not mentioned;because Apple does not believe that number really matters as long as they believe they have providedenough ram to run all o f the consumer's app nicely. Clearly Apple's main target is not simply for the tech heads, but for the genera l not very tech savvy consumers that just want to use the tablet.

After reading your article, it definitely seems like you are the one that is putting on a much bigger real itydistortion field than Apple.

Mine is running Honey Comb as we speak.

Posted By Chicago: March 3, 2011 10:48 AM

Oh wow.

1. You say that another pad is shippi ng in volume as a dua l-core. Let's put aside the fact that you yourself thought it kind of sucked. In a market where one player is selli ng more than a million units per month... sellingless than 100,000 un its is not volume! Xoom's figures are no t as bleak but probabl y still under a qua rter millionunits. The phone i s irrelevant he was talking tablets... so at that point you a re being as interpretative with factsas he was be ing and YOU are supposedly a journalist. He's a marketers... who wears that badge worse?

2.Probably a mistake. It happens. You journalists make mistakes with quotes and facts ALL the time and there

is not one mag out there without an OOPS sections somewhere nea r the byline. STILL smooth is a verystrange word to be describing a sell-out so it is probab ly Samsung marketing BS instead of Apple marketingBS.

3. A Kindle is not a tablet. A solitaire game sold at Brookstone is no t a tablet. A Nook is not a tablet. If you wereto do some fact checking yourself, which IS your job , you would know that the Wall Street Journal reported thatSamsung fudged it's sales figures. I am sure THAT does not shock you as much as the quote blunder. OnJanuary 28th Samsung admitted that the 1-2 million figure was of units shipped to retailers and that actualunits in customer's hands were "QUITE SMALL" THAT is a quo te. Forget Math learn how to research. I wouldhave fired you by now.

4. You say the Xoom is better because it has more of this or more o f that. You say people don't care aboutcomponents but seem to think the price should be about the components. Do you have any idea how much ittakes to develop and maintain an ope rating system? Google is doing a ll that work for them and spreading theexpense among pretty good devices but also millions of crappy ones. And why do you want flash on a pad?Do you know how ridiculous it is to hold a pad up to take pictures when you probably have a phone in your pocket? I would have not spent the development money on a rear camera for the iPad and see no use for itbeyond facetime. And I guess in your world minu tuarization is free. The iPad is lighter than the Xoom by over 120 grams and abotu 40% thinne r while still maintaining what is VERY important, much better battery life.

You have no t respect for anything. If you had respect you would have bothered to check your numbers. Youlive off this mediocrity. Having people come to your posts so that you can tell your editor you had a lot of hits onyour article. It is a very sad way to lead a career.

Posted By Dan, Austin, TX: March 3, 2011 10:42 AM

Let me lay this out for you.

1) The iPad will be the first tablet to ship dual core processors in significant volume. They are predicted to sell15 million of these in the first 3 months after release. There is no other device that will be able to come close.

2) If Samsung would have sold two million instead of shipping them to carriers and retail outlets. They wouldhave said so. Their PR cover up does not even insinuate that they sold two million. This article is distortingreality.

3) Nook is an e-reader not a multi-purpose tablet. Just because a device runs android doesn't mean itcompetes with the iPad. Using the same logic, an iPod touch or an Apple TV would compete simply because it

runs iOS. Thats ridiculous.

4) As far as comparing other plastic toy tablets to the iPad, there's even more wishful thinking and realitydistortion. The iPad is also a 720P+ screen. 720P+ means that it has more than 720 vertical lines of resolution. The iPad has 768. The Motorola Xoom has 800. The extra 32 pixels of vertical resolution does not overcomethe plethora of weaknesses, chief of which is the platform of apps (or lack thereof) available to the unfortunatepurchaser.

Ultimately, the value of a mobile multi-purpose tablet is the amount of utility, productivity, and entertainmentvalue of the device. The iPad has proven itself to 15 million people so far. The iPad 2 will probably prove itself to 40 million+ during 2011. I truly wish the best for its competitors, but I don't envy the task ahead of them. Thatsthe reality of the situation.

It's Seth Weintraub's "reality distortion", not Steve Jobs.

Your link for the mis-translated quote from a Samsung VP leads to another link that leads to another link thatleads to another link.

Edit Weintraub: The original source, the Wall St. Journal issued the correction :http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2011/01/31/samsung-galaxy-tab-sales-actually-quite-small/

NONE of the articles ever cited the actual number o f units sold. So how would anyone know the quantitativemeaning o f "progressing smoothly" other than a subjective remark from an embarrassed CEO? However onearticle did cite Samsung's return rate: a whopping 16%.

Edit Weintraub: No, it is 2% https://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110203/samsung-galaxy-tab-returns-arent-16-percent-theyre-2-percent/

I'm sorry but it's you who only hear what you want to hear, without hard data to support your case.

You picked on SJ for saying "First dual core tablet to ship in volume" because in your opin ion Xoom is shipp ing"in volume" too. How many? I don't recall Xoom ever released their how many, what the hell are youcomparing "in volume" with?

Then you said you've been using And roid phone (the Atrix) with a dual core chip for weeks. SJ is talking aboutdual core tablet, NOT dual core dumbphones!

Apple's market share is indeed 90% . Market share is not shipped , it's units SOLD. You don 't count inventorysitting in some obscure warehouses, they are NOT in the consumer market and they have zero market shares.

I can't even read the rest of the article, it's a waste of my time.

"Apple twisted facts (or worse) to try to convince crowds that all other tablets had no shot at de-throning theiPad in 2011."

I think you should check your facts before trying to p lay the journa list.

OK, so let's take a look at your twisted facts as you call them. You quite deliberately take a quote out of contextand twist it to your own agenda.

It is common knowledge that presentation software uses bulle t points only to highlight comments made duringthe presentation (unless you use PowerPoint where presenters put the entire speech on screen and then readit out aloud in case the audience a re illiterate).

What matters is the presenter's words. In this regard Steve Jobs actually said: "even though others are startingto ship I think this is going to be the first dual-core tablet to ship in volume".

That is he acknowledges that others are shipping and goes on the speak of the iPad in the future tense ('isgoing to be' and not simply 'is' as your twisted text implies). Indeed he even qualifies this by the words "I think".

You continue "Perhaps this has to do wi th Jobs' subjective view of "Volume' starts at whatever numbers i Padsare currently selling?" And "ship"? Well, I don't know."

Well he is clearly speaking of the future and I have $1,000.00 which says his iPad volume will bea t any other tablet volume (with dual-core) and you will be toast on that point. If you have the guts to put your money whereyour mouth is confirm the bet with a paragraph at the end of your article.

But then I guess you guys believed there were WMD in Iraq too. Even though the source of that informationnow openly admits he lied. The US urgently needs some journalists with balls.

If you are trying to claim someoneis distorting the truth atleast don't distort it yourself in the same article - what makes a kindle a tablet?? e-bookreader fine, but a tablet? OK Dell streak may be a tablet but "volume" (btw if it is selling in volume can you givethe numbers? ....oh I am sorry perhaps numbers might di stort your reality. While I am no tech expert, I am a paid journalist who can lieand spin the truth anytime I want to."

Posted By Steve Ponte Vedra Beach Florida: March 3, 2011 10:11 AM

Seth,In the future, please write only about topics you have some knowledge of. Your counter-facts are actuallyincorrect.1. Apple's "sell-through" is primarily through Apple stores and Apple.com. They do not count every unit shippedto an Apple store as "sold." When some one walks in and buys an iPad, then it's sold. When Samsung ships a

Tab to BestBuy, they count it as sold. So, please fix all your market share "calculations" accordingly. You'll findthat 90% is probably understated.2. "Shipped in volume." Apple will have stock of iPad 2 in stores on March 11. Yesterday was March 2. Don'tyou think they are shipping in volume right now? Or do you think that 3 million iPads appear magically instores around the world on the evening of March 10, like Santa on Christmas Eve?3. "Shipped in volume." Even Dell admits the Streak hasn't achieved expectations, so it's not really shipping "involume," is it? I'm glad you tested one in January. We were all wondering who bought that unit.

Edit Weintraub: Wow, you waited a whole one bullet point to contradict yourself. Please grow up and do some actual reporting. This article is not worthy of some Android fan-boy blog, never mind Fortune.

Posted By Steve H, Ottawa, Canada: March 3, 2011 10:05 AM

Apple coun ts units sold to customers. Samsung counts units shipped to stores. Xoom will sit on the storeshelves and not convert to sales. Explain how sitting on a store shelf is a sale and i might believe the rest of your drivel. Apple has no real competition in the tablet market. The iPad will be the primary gateway device for

new apple converts. They will quickly realize that apple offers a better user experience across the board. Buthey go buy the xoom if you want one. I sure don't.

Edit Weintraub: Incorrect. When Apple ships an iPad off to Best Buy, AT&T, or Walmart, it is 'sold' just likeSamsung

Your phone is not a tablet.

Neither the Dell, nor the Xoom have yet announced shipmen ts that I would call Volume

Jobs didn't say that the IPad was, he said he thought it would be .

For the last 6 months everything prin ted about Android has stated that Android has passed iOS, often doub le,whereas in fact in Q4 iOS sales were 34 .5M to Android's 32M

There are too many bu ilders fighting for too small a market share with Android.

And they started off as losers. They're on Android because their previous systems couldn't compete.

This year is Apple's. Samsung, HP and MMI will take no more than 15% of the market between them. (Sell. Nothow many they build)

Yes, the RDF does exist. But your assessments are a bit of a stretch. Yeah the Samsung quo te was a b itsleazy. And the 90% market share may be a bit exaggerated. But its very close to 90% because the GalaxyTab is not selling wel l and has over 16% return rate (iPad has 3%). And that $499 starting point for the GalaxyTab? That's subsidized on a 2-yr contract buddy. $600 unsubsidized for a non-Tablet OS with a tiny screen thathas a very disturbing return rate. The XOOM is great, but does cost more, twice as thick and has about 100apps vs 65,000 for iPad. And let's not forget all the mistruths about Flash on the XOOM (which it does NOThave yet and can't even browse to it's own flash website) and and it's does NOT have 4G yet. So all in all, I'llroll with Steve's embellishing because his p roduct has everything he speaks of in 8 days

Nice try at pumping Samsung and Dell. But Apple's leadership in tablets is compelling and undeniable. WithiPad2 it looks like Apples' dominance will continue for a long while. The sales volume of all of iPad'scompetitors combined is fractional to Apple's success, so yes, Steve Jobs sees the definition of "volume" a bitdifferently than Samsung, Dell, and some pundits.

I encourage anyone doubting where iPad2 is headed to devote 70 minutes to watching Apple's productannouncement from yesterday (March 2). It's posted on Apple's website. To anyone doubting Jobs' hea lth, heimpressed everyone with enthusiasm, stamina and mental clarity. Sharp as ever, skinny as always, nothingfrail about him at all.

Posted By David Lindberg, Chattanooga TN: March 3, 2011 9:49 AM

Reliable estimates of Samsung Galaxy SALES to consumers cluster around 200,000, compared to 2 millioninto their distribution channels. Every single iPad recorded is in the hands of a consumer. Jobs is right on this

one, and you are wrong. Do your homework.

(Edit Weintraub): No, no...and no.

You are commenting about these products from a PC-era 'speeds and feeds' mentality, where specs onmemory, disk space, processor speed and so on were rated more important than the total user experience withthe product (thus hiding from users, for example, the huge distractions from dealing with virus and trojans andmalware that make Windows relatively unproductive).

(Edit Weintraub): Apple uses Speeds and feeds when it is convenient for them. "1 GHz Dual CoreProcessor!" How much RAM? "It doesn't matter!"

We have moved on. What counts now is the total user experience, how much fun he/she has, how productivewe become, how much we embrace and enjoy the possibilities these devices bring to us. That's what Applefocuses its R&D on, and judging by the results, the market understands this, even if you fail to do so.

this magic art as are many di fferent companies. You may want to return to school to take a class in marketingso that you can be properly equipped to write for Fortune magazine.

P.S. You may want to ask around Fortune as I do bel ieve they have a marketing department.

""First dual core tablet to ship in volume"."

He's wrong, you're wrong.

More accurately, he should have said "sold" not "shipped".

On Mar 11th weekend 1 mm 2s will be sold, and by Mar 30th, 3mm 2s will have been sold.

How many will the others have sold by then?

Someone selling a product cherry-picking the "facts" to make their offering look better is hardly surprising.Because their obj ective is crystal clear it's easy to take what they say for what it is; a sales pitch. I find thisbehavior much more problematic when it comes from "news" providers. Grossly misleading headlines, misquotes and wrong "facts" are much too common in the contemporary news business.

Not all 2 million of those samsung tablets were actually sold in that time frame. Also those Dell and Samsungtablets are a much smaller screen for the same price of the entry level iPad with 10" screen.
