GUIDELINES TO POOL OPERATIONS
1. Swim Lessons -- The Pool Manager and/or Senior Instructor shall handle all administrative
aspects and instructions pertaining to swim lessons
2. Pool Coverage by Guards -- The number of persons using the pool shall determine the
number of guards on duty. Three guards will be on duty at all times. Additional guards, however,
may be needed on holidays, week-ends, special events, parties, and during the beginning of swim
season. The Pool Manager will plan and assign additional guards, as necessary. Conversely, if use of
the pool by residents is far below normal, the Pool Manager will reduce the guard staff accordingly,
but in no instance will there be less than three guards on duty at ANY time.
3. Use of Lifeguard Stand -- One lifeguard will be on the lifeguard stand at all times. Due to a
number of variable factors, the exact amount of time cannot be specified; however, the intent of this
guideline is to have a guard on the stand to the maximum extent possible.
4. Charge of Pool -- The Head Lifeguard is primarily in charge of the pool. In his or her
absence, however, a guard designated by the Head Lifeguard will be in charge.
5. Entry to Pool -- One lifeguard will monitor the entry to the pool, check for identification
tags-pool passes, register residents and guests, collect guest fees (if any), and perform all other
administrative, pool maintenance, and housekeeping duties. The head Lifeguard will rotate this duty
among all lifeguards, according to specified intervals.
6. Smoking/Use of Tobacco Products -- Smoking and/or the use of tobacco products are not
allowed in the swimming pool or pool area.

ACCIDENT/EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
It is impossible to delineate a rigid Asystem@ that is valid for all emergency situations. Emergency
action must conform to the nature of the situation at hand. In every case, your training. experience
and judgement will come into play. There are, however, some basic guidelines which do remain
constant and which must always be followed:
! Minor accidents or injuries which require first aid, such as cleansing or bandaging, will be
treated by the Head Lifeguard or the Lifeguard that is not on the stand. (Do not ever leave the
pool unattended.)
! If in the judgement of the Head Lifeguard (or Lifeguard in charge) the victim needs further
medical treatment, a parent or another responsible person designated by the victim must be
summoned to take the victim to a doctor.
! No matter how minor or trivial an accident may seem, a Lifeguard Incident Report (see
report enclosed) must be recorded and reported to the assigned Property Manager and the Pool
Manager immediately. This requirement includes any swimming or spectator members or
guests injured in any way.
In the event of a more serious accident, take the following steps:
! The first and most important action is to see that the victim has the most immediate, expert
and continuous attention that is available.
! Call the nearest rescue squad or ambulance. The number should be memorized by all staff
members and posted clearly near the telephone - 911.
! Clear the pool and keep the crowd away from the emergency scene.
! Notify parent(s) or legal guardian immediately.
! Notify: Barbara Lowry, Association Management Services, (210) 829-7202.
! If the victim is conscious, make him or her as comfortable as possible. Under no
circumstances or conditions should you move the victim. Additionally, do not allow the victim
to walk around or leave the area until the emergency squad or ambulance has arrived and
completed their examination.
! Fill out or complete the Lifeguard Incident Report and submit it to the Property Manager.
All rescues and administration of first aid, artificial respiration and CPR will be in accordance with
American Red Cross or YMCA standards.
NOTE: If you will focus your attention on the pool, scan each area of the water and
effectively use your whistle to curtail dangerous activity, you will seldom have accidents to
report. Practicing such Preventive Lifeguarding is your first and foremost responsibility as
a staff member.
