A store owner was tacking a sign above his door that

read "Puppies For Sale."

S igns like that have a way of attracting children,

and sure enough, a little boy appeared under the

store owner's sign. "How much are you going to

sell the puppies for?" he asked.

The store owner replied, "Anywhere from $30 to $50."

The little boy reached in his pocket and pulled out some

change. "I have $10," he said. "Can I please look at

them?"

The store owner smiled and whistled and out of the

kennel came Lady, who ran down the aisle of his store

followed by five teeny, tiny balls of fur. One puppy was

lagging considerably behind. Immediately the little boy

singled out the lagging, limping puppy and said,

"What's wrong with that little dog?"

The store owner explained that the veterinarian had

examined the little puppy and had discovered it didn't

have a hip socket. It would always limp. It would al-

ways be lame.

The little boy became excited. "That is the puppy that I

want to buy." The store owner said, "No, you don't

want to buy that little puppy. If you really want him, I'll

just give him to you."

The little boy got quite upset. He looked straight into

the store owner's eyes, pointing his finger, and said, "I

don't want you to give him to me. That little puppy is

worth every bit as much as all the other puppies and I'll

pay full price. In fact, I'll give you $10 now and the

balance later."

The store owner countered, "You really don't want to

buy this little puppy. He is never going to be able to run

and jump and play with you like the other puppies." To

his surprise, the little boy reached down and rolled up

his pants to reveal a badly twisted, crippled left leg sup-

ported by a big metal brace. He looked up at the store

owner and softly replied, "Well, I don't run so well my-

self, and the little puppy will need someone who under-

stands!"

We ALL need someone who UNDERSTANDS!

To the polio victims, the orphans, the mentally and

physically challenged, they need loving and compas-

sionate Rotarians who UNDERSTANDS!

Warmest Regards.

“The truth is that as soon as we are no

longer obliged to earn our living, we no

longer know what to do with our life and

recklessly squander it.”

André Gide, Journals, 1889-1949

I n the first week of the Vocational Service

month, I’d like to share with you the emphasis

we have placed on this. Vocational Service has

always been on the pillar of Rotary; charity begins at

home, if we do not have time for our children why talk

about visiting orphanages?

For the month of October, we will be launching the

Four Way Test awareness program, wherein one of our

Board of Directors Sandy Soh will print the “Four Way

Test” and have them affixed to the fruit juice her com-

pany produce. We will also be giving away these fruit

juices to some orphanages.

Next in the pipe line we have planned an Employers

and Employees night to honour those who has worked

so hard so that we can earn our keeps. Without the

employees, we are just headless chicken running

around in circles.

Finally we will also honour the souls who truly be-

lieve in the maxim “Service Above Self”, these kind

people dedicated much of their time to help those in

dire straits, in the later part of October.

Please join us in the various activities lined up for you. PresidentRY 2013/2014

YOUTH SERVICE

I-QUIZ 2013

Dear friends,

Congratulations to RC Bandar Sunway on the success-

ful conclusion to yet another edition of the Interact Quiz

competition. This competition seems to be getting better

each year and with the participation from District 3310,

it has become a truly Malaysian competition.

It is good to hear that the preliminary rounds of the

competition may also be held in Penang and Ipoh next

year and is keenly anticipated.

RC Bandar Sunway has truly made this Youth Service

month a memorable one. Besides the Quiz competition,

you have chartered an Interact club and a Rotaract club

over the last few weeks. These are no easy achieve-

ments for any club and congrats to President Datin San-

dra and the inspiring and hardworking Rotarians from

RC Bandar Sunway on your great achievements.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards or RYLA as it is

popularly known began as an idea in Australia in 1959.

There was a group of young people from the state of

Queensland, Australia who were selected to meet up

with Princess Alexandra, a young cousin of Queen

Elizabeth . The Rotarians of Brisbane, who hosted these

participants were impressed with their quality of these

young people and it was decided to bring youth leaders

together each year for a week of social, cultural and

educational activities. The RYLA program gradually

grew throughout all the Rotary Districts in Australia

and New Zealand. In 1971, the RI Board officially

adopted RYLA as an official program of Rotary Inter-

national.

Every year, thousands of young adults from the age of

18-30 attend these seminars in almost all the 500 odd

Rotary districts throughout the world. They spend a

week together in a challenging program of leadership

training, discussions, inspirational addresses and social

activities which are designed to enhance personal de-

velopment, leadership skills and good citizenship.

RYLA is generally conducted as a District activity

though there are times when it is held as an Inter-district

or as a multi-district event. This is yet another meaning-

ful program of RI in the service of Youth.

THOTS FOR THE WEEK

A DEA officer stopped at a ranch in Texas , and talked with an old rancher. He told the rancher, "I need to in-

spect your ranch for illegally grown drugs."

The rancher said, "Okay, but don't go in that field over there.....", as he pointed out a distant location.

The DEA officer verbally exploded, saying, " Mister, I have the authority of the Federal Government with me!"

Reaching into his rear pants pocket, he removed his badge and proudly displayed it to the rancher.

"See this badge?! This badge means I am allowed to go wherever I wish.... on ANY land!! No questions asked or

answers given!! Have I made myself clear.....do you understand?"

The rancher nodded politely, apologized, and went about his chores.

A short time later, the old rancher heard loud screams, looked up and saw the DEA officer running for his life,

being chased by the rancher's enormous Santa Gertrudis bull......

With every step the bull was gaining ground on the officer, and it seemed likely that the officer would be gruesomely

gored before he reached safety. The man was clearly terrified.

The rancher threw down his tools, ran to the fence and yelled at the top of his lungs.....!!

(I just love this part....)

MAMA’s LOVE

F our brothers left home for col-

lege, and they became suc-

cessful doctors and lawyers.

One evening, they chatted after hav-

ing dinner together.

They discussed the 95th birthday

gifts they were able to give their eld-

erly mother who moved to Florida.

The first said, "You know I had a big

house built for Mama."

The second said, "And I had a large

theater built in the house."

The third said, "And I had my Mercedes dealer deliver an SL600 to her."

The fourth said, "You know how Mama loved reading the Bible and you know she can't

read anymore because she can't see very well. I met this preacher who told me about a

parrot who could recite the entire Bible. It took ten preachers almost 8 years to teach

him. I had to pledge to contribute $50,000 a year for five years to the church, but it was

worth it. Mama only has to name the chapter and verse, and the parrot will recite it."

The other brothers were impressed. After the celebration Mama sent out her "Thank

You" notes.

She wrote: Milton , the house you built is so huge that I live in only one room, but I

have to clean the whole house. Thanks anyway."

"Marvin, I am too old to travel. I stay home; I have my groceries delivered, so I never

use the Mercedes. The thought was good. Thanks."

"Michael, you gave me an expensive theater with Dolby sound and it can hold 50 peo-

ple, but all of my friends are dead, I've lost my hearing, and I'm nearly blind. I'll never

use it. Thank you for the gesture just the same."

"Dearest Melvin, you were the only son to have the good sense to give a little thought

to your gift. The chicken was delicious Thank you so much."

Love, Mama

A man walks into the doctor's office and says: "Doctor, my name is Mark, and I'd

like to be castrated."

"What? Are you sure about this? Why?" asks the doctor, amazed.

"It's something I've been considering a long time and I'd like to have it done" replies

Mark.

"But have you thought it through? REALLY through?" asks the concerned doctor, "It's a

very serious operation and once it's done, there's no going back. It will change your life

forever!"

"I'm aware of that and you're not going to change my mind, so please book me in to be castrated or I'll sim-

ply use another doctor."

"Well, OK.", says the doctor, "But I'll have you know that it's against my better judgment!"

So Mark has his operation, and the next day he is up and walking very slowly, legs apart, down the hospital

corridor with his drip stand. Heading towards him is another patient, who is walking exactly the same way.

"Hi there," says Mark,"It looks as if you've just had the same operation as me."

"Yes, it seems like" said the patient, "as for me, I finally decided after 37 years of life that it was time for

me to be circumcised."

Mark stared at him in horror and screamed, "Dammit, THAT was the word!!!"

WRONG CHOICE OF WORD
