  • INTRODUCTORY RITESPrelude

5:00 Angele Dei Susan LaBarr (b.1981)

    Angel of God, my guardian dear,To whom his love commits me here;

Ever this night be at my side,To light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

    -Ps 42:1-3

The Master Singers Dr. Gary Schwartzhoff, director

Exsultate, Jubilate Karl Jenkins (b.1944) from Motets

    Exult, be joyful, o you happy souls. Exult, be joyful, in the singing of sweet songs;

And in responses to your song may the heavens sing psalms with me.

Introitus Morten Lauridsen (b.1943) No. I, from Lux Aeterna

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine:et lux perpetua luceat eis.

Te decet hymnus Deus in Zion,et tibi redetur votum in Jerusalem:

exaudi orationem meam, ad te omnis caro veniet.Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine:

    et lux perpetua luceat eis.

Rest eternal grant them, O Lord:And let perpetual light shine on them.To thee praise is due, O God, in Zion,And to thee vows are recited in Jerusalem:hear my prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come.Rest eternal grant them, O Lord:And let perpetual light shine on them.

In te, Domine, Speravi No. II, from Lux Aeterna

Tu ad liberandum suscepturas hominemnon horruisti Virginis uterum.

Tu devicto mortis aculeo, aperuisti credentibus regna coelorum.Exortum est in tenebris lumen rectis.

Miserere nostri, Domine, miserere nostri.Fiat misericordia tua, Domine, super nos

quemadmodum speravimus in te.In te Domine, speravi:

    non confundar in aeternum.

Thou, having delivered mankind,Did not disdain the Virgin’s womb.Thou overcame the sting of death,And opened to believers the kingdom of heaven. To the righteous a light is risen up in darkness.Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.Let thy mercy be upon us, O Lord, for we have hoped in thee.O Lord, in Thee have I hoped:Let me never be confounded.

5:00; 7:30; 9:30 O Human, Lament Your Great Sin Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde gross BWV 622

Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause against an ungodly nation; from wicked and deceitful men deliver me,

for you are my God and my strength.

Send forth your light and your truth; these have led me and brought me to your holy mountain

    and to your dwelling place.

    -Ps 42:1-3

Rise from death, chosen ones, seeking life in Christ.

Third Scrutiny (9:30)The Third Scrutiny will be celebrated for those preparing for Baptism at the Easter Vigil. The scrutinies are mainly for the Elect (catechumens become “elect” after the Rite of Election at the beginning of Lent). But the faithful are encouraged to join in the scrutinies to also benefit from them. We are all in need of conversion throughout our lives, so we join with the Elect in scrutinizing our lives and pray for the grace to overcome the power of sin that infects our hearts.

Apostles’ Creed (All bow at the words in bold.)

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

9:30 Richte mich Gott / Justice, O God Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) The Basilica Cathedral Choir

5:00 O Nata Lux Morten Lauridsen (b.1943); from Lux Aeterna The Master Singers Dr. Gary Schwartzhoff, director

Was betrübst du dich meine Seele, und bist so unruhig in mir?

Harre auf Gott!denn ich werde ihm noch danken.

Harre auf Gott!denn ich werde ihm noch danken, dass er meines

Angesichts Hülfe, und mein Gott ist.

Justice, O God! Defend my causeagainst a people of unrighteous waysand deliver me from the handsof evil doers. For you are my God, you are my stronghold, why have you cast me aside?Must I walk like a mourner sorrowing, while the foe prevails?Send forth your light, your light and your truth, that they shall lead me and be my guideto your holy hill and your sacred dwelling. And then I will go to God’s holy altar,to my God,who is my joy and delight and life,I will praise you with harp, and thank you, my God.O my soul, why be full of sorrow, and why remain deep in despair?Hope in the Lord!for I yet will sing God’s praises.Hope in the Lord!for I yet will sing God’s praises; God is myredeemer and savior, and my Lord God. -Psalm 43; English text: King James

9:30 When Jesus Wept arr. Benjamin M. Cramer (b.1982) The Basilica Cathedral Choir World Premier

    When Jesus wept, the falling tearIn mercy flowed beyond all bound;

When Jesus groaned, a trembling fear Seized all the guilty world around.

    -Perez Morton; The New-England Psalm-singer, 1770

Surely, He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. He was wounded for our transgressions.

He was bruised for our iniquity. The punishment that brought us peace was upon Him.

And by His wounds we are healed.

We all, like sheep, have gone astray. Each of us has turned to his own way,

And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

    -Isaiah 53:4-6
