• 4 days a week in hospital

Ward Experience • If timetabled for “self-directed patient
clerking”, ask junior doctor or nurse in charge for suitable patients to clerk
• Try to complete history and examination as if you’re the first person seeing the patient don’t just copy from the notes
• Keep a copy of your clerkings in a folder
• Get into the habit of thinking about differential diagnoses, investigations and management!
• If timetabled for several ward rounds in one part of the rotation, ask for patients to see at the start then present during the round

General Tips
• Familiarise yourself with your portfolio
• Note dates for academic advisor meetings, logbook reviews etc
• Set learning objectives for each placement
• Actively seek out cases (ask staff on ward)
• Middle-grades/juniors always keen to teach
