• When two or more OIE Reference Laboratories are designated for the same pathogen, a network must be established. Only OIE Reference Laboratories are accountable to the OIE.

• However other reference laboratories might participate in some of the activities.

• Examples of Networks: FMD, Bluetongue, non-tsetse transmitted trypanosomoses

Each OIE Laboratory Twinning Project

Is a link between OIE Reference Laboratory or Collaborating Centre (Parent) and national laboratory (Candidate)

Aims to improve expertise and diagnostic capacity with eventual aim of achieving OIE Reference Laboratory designation

Should be sustainable once the project is over

The Laboratory Twinning Programme

17th WAVLD Symposium, Saskatoon, 17 June 2015

24 projects completed

34 projects underway

12 projects approved and waiting to start

The three most popular topics are:

• Avian influenza and Newcastle disease (10)

• Brucellosis (8)

• Rabies (6)

Status May 2015

OIE National Veterinary Laboratory Focal Points

Serve as focal points for the OIE on topics related to veterinary laboratories

Create and maintain national laboratory network

Need laboratory expertise and knowledge of management and administration

Operate under the authority of the OIE Delegate at the country level
