What is a stem cell?Stem Cells are cells that can develop into other cells that havespecific roles in the body.

Stem cells have the remarkablepotential to develop into manydifferent cell types in the body duringearly life and growth. In addition, inmany tissues they serve as a sort ofinternal repair system, dividingessentially without limit to replenishother cells as long as the person oranimal is still alive.

When a stem cell divides, each newcell has the potential either to remaina stem cell or become another type ofcell with a more specialized function,such as a muscle cell, a red bloodcell, or a brain cell.

What makes stem cells special?

No. There are many typesof stem cells, but they canbe classified into two basicgroups:

1. Adult Stem Cells (takenfrom the body tissue ofbone marrow, blood,umbilical cord, or fat tissuecells of the human body.

2. Embryonic Stem Cellsthat are harvested from anembryo.

Are all stem cells the same?

Our focus is entirely on a class of human adult stem cells called Mesenchymal Stem Cells.

Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) are very versatile and are commonly called the duct tapeof the body’s repair toolbox for their ability to be used in many circumstances.

In general, MSCs differentiate to create all the structural tissues of the body including: bone,cartilage, and muscle as well as the dermal layers of the skin

What are Mesenchymal Stem Cells?

MSC’s can also take a different path and make neurons (brain and nervous system cells).

MSC’s are the body’s “First Responders”when tissue damage occurs• MSC’s are called up and arrive at the scene of an “accident”• MSC’s assess the situation (what kind or extent of damage• MSC’s communicate with & coordinate the action of other healing cells

MSC’s communicate with other cells,including local stem cells, causing thefollowing to occur:• Proliferation, the rapid expansion of population

• Differentiation, the changing of stem cells into the exact cell type needed.• Directions to move away are given to other cells that might cause problems with healing.
