MY THOUGHTS ON DIGITAL PUBLISHING ....

I can honestly say I really did not expect to be designing an iPad compatible magazine that I could interact with nor did I imaging designing a magazine cover over a two page spread but I did, but how did it go and what was the hurdles I met with while doing this project.

INSIDE THIS ISSUE

Working on my Digital Publishing Projects has offered me somewhat of a varied challenge. Producing my designs has made me think more of designing for what the market place is looking for, than for my own personal likes.

Designing a two page spread created in indesign gave me an insight into how the Magazine world works. Seeing what a magazine consists of such as, Pictures, adverts, and information allowed me to follow the same approach with mine. Indesign gave me a simple layout that uses layering to effectually and simply build up a page by page system.

Magazine covers have in my opinion, evolved over time, where certain rules would be strictly flowed, now they are readily broken, this was beneficial because I was able to have more flexibility on my own project.

I learnt some very interesting ideas while working on my two page spread particularly the idea of packaging my work when saving it. This was so helpful because if I moved my work else where, it would notify me and ask me to correct or update if anything was missing, very useful if you are making something for a client.

Working with indesign was exactly like working with most of the other Adobe Programs, so it gave me a better understanding of the tools and workspace areas.

The challenges I found with the two page spread was making it attractive, it was hard to imagine it on a store shelf, the colors and the layout was ideally the selling point but meeting this I would say stretched my design ideas. I wanted to find that attractive design that encouraged you to walk towards it and pick it up.

A whole new design began with transferring what I had done to the IPAD. A revolution for me in my eyes, something so complex was workable with my design in a wonderful digital way. Making it compatible was relatively simple this involved restructuring and redesigning the layout for the IPAD.

Designing the IPAD version was very exciting because I really wanted to make something that could be used on the IPAD, now I was looking at my Magazine on a state of the art device, even better I was making it interactive, however I met with problems that really prevented full interactivity with the IPAD.

I watched a number of videos that showed me how to add a slide show of pictures with tags under the picture detailing it, also a video reel that gave you a number of videos to watch unfortunately it did not turn out the way I wanted, reflecting back I needed more time to work on it, and adjust any problems that come up.

Taking my work home was more difficult than working at University, as I needed to preview my work on a compatible device such as an IPAD, this would allow me to see what mistakes and adjustments where needed to advance further.

WISI MATTIS XLEO SUSCIPITTo add to my finished project I had to create a poster that reflected my chosen film, this was designed in photoshop which allowed me to touch on the skills gained earlier in the year.

Here I really had fun playing with the different layers and designs that I could create, I really feel that the poster brought out the best of me.

This has given me some really good insight into visual art to tell my story.

Mise-en-scène means in front of the camera in short. Here I used this idea in my poster the man is hiding, but you can make out his hands. I wanted this idea to be brought out and understood within the film.

Most of the elements within my poster I learnt by mistake and testing out tools, this opened doors that I could not just close.

Using “Escape Apollo Cinemas” magazine for ideas it helped me see how a poster would be formatted for the movies, and what really draws people to it.

My approach in creating the movie poster was more with simplicity than the with heavy use of colour and fonts.

I found that with this, my poster stood out more with this method. Over all this was a very enjoyable project, but I really feel that It needs to be practiced and practiced to make an impact within the media world.
