• AKA Dark Ages• Hard Life• Feudal System• Knights, kings, like Robin Hood• Plain Food *• Clothes were coarse and uncomfortable (flax and wool)*• Houses/furniture put together crudely*• Many people couldn’t read or write• Bible was #1 along with all Holy Places*

• 11th Century • Pilgrimages to Palestine- Holy Land• War-like Turks ruled the holy land and used

churches for stables-Moslems• Stopped pilgrimages and began the 200 years

War• Kings were angry- THIS MEANS WAR!!!

• Shopped in the marketplaces of Constantinople.• Bought- silk,teas, woven cottons, spices*• Saw pearls, gems, rubies, other precious stones*• Ate yummy spicy food from East Indies*• Tea from China and wine from Arabia• Rugs and Carpets from Arabia

• Christians came back to Europe wanting MORE GOOD STUFF.

• Left Italy for long voyage East• Family of jewel merchants• Trade with Cathay• Served Kublai Khan- ruler of Cathay for 24 years• Wrote a book- think “catalog of goods”, palaces with

roofs of gold• TRADE BEGAN!!! • WE WANT MORE!!!

East by camel – partly by sea and land• Began looking for a new route to Far East-

China and India……• AGE OF EXPLORATION!!!!

• Henry the Navigator- build an observatory- School for Navigators, sent sailor around coast of Africa

• Sailors didn’t move away from sight of land• Used sun and stars to navigate (astrolabe)• Astolabe- tells how far you are from the equator.• Dias-sailed further down south coast of Africa, stormy

seas, reached southern tip – Cape of Storms• King John changed to Cape of Good Hope- thought

storms would scare sailors• Pillar of stone (place a stone for as far as you travel….

supported his dream• Town of Palos supplied his ship and then was punished for helping him. They smuggled goods.• Santa Maria and Pinta was stolen.• 88 seamen were forced on the ship across the Sea of Darkness.

(triangle) to square sails on Nina• Portugese Man-of-War were hunting them down.• As he passed last island, it exploded with a violent

• 1492 -70 Days to San Salvador- (means Holy Savior)in Bahamas• Continued to think he reached Asia, calling native

people Indians (from India)• Actually discovered the Americas• Vasco de Gama actually found route to Far East• Inspired explorers to come to Americas in search of

gold• Age of Exploration has begun!!
