    Introduction to Audio Recording

    Instructor: Michael Quam

    Class Description:This is a hands-on introduction to audio recording technology for music students. In thisclass students will learn how to record their own music using a computer based digital audioworkstation. In addition to recording their own music project, students will gain real worldexperience recording a live RMCMA concert. Class will culminate with a student final audioproject presentation for the last class.

    Topics covered include: Basic audio recording terminology and principles. An overview ofrecording equipment including microphones, preamps, cables and connectors. Analog anddigital recording. Computer-based digital audio workstations. Editing, mixing and masteringwithin the digital domain. Software-based music production and MIDI. Troubleshooting andstudio maintenance.

    Students are encouraged to bring musical instruments (including voice) to class for in-classrecording sessions. Basic audio recording equipment is required for student home recordingprojects. Contact the instructor, Michael Quam ([email protected]), for more information.

    Class is open to high school age music students and up, with a minimum of one year ofprivate lessons, ensemble or other music performance experience.
