Increasing the need for standardization and certification of the Software Defined Radios has been identified as one of the main areas for the European Defence Agency. The EDA SDR Conference 2009 is organised to create and enhance the mutual understanding of the joint SDR standardization and certification amongst pMS, EC, other international organizations such as NATO and industry. The Conference will be organized together with two separate workshops each dealing separately with the topics of SDR standardization and certification.

The Conference will highlight key contextual issues surrounding the need for common aspects of SDR and outline the challenges that need to be collectively overcome, in the short, medium and longer-term. Potential solutions, including collaborative opportunities to enhance joint capability, will be proposed and industrial contributions to meet the challenges will be presented. One of conference main task is to form recommendations on the subject of SDR development to be followed among all key players.

The Conference will be opened by four keynote speakers, the Chief of NATO CNNIB, Mr Richard Barfoot, the Chairman of the ESSOR programme committee, Rear Admiral Francesco V. Pierucci, the Director of International Programs in Joint Program Executive Office, Ms Kathey "KB" Bailey, and the Technical officer of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, Mr Andrea Lorelli. After the keynote speeches more detailed discussions will take place in the expert panels of the two separated workshops.

The first workshop, “SDR standardization”, will focus on identifying the possible steps and actions ahead in order to achieve common standards for both military and public safety users. The second workshop, “SDR certification”, will investigate methods and mechanism for the certification of SDR products; both from a hardware and a software point of view to enable true portability of the waveforms provide the interoperability. After the workshops, the findings and conclusions will be presented in the plenary session of the Conference as recommended steps for the SDR standardization and certification development.

Updated information about the conference will be posted on the EDA web-site: www.eda.europa.eu.
