DAY IN THE LIFE
MORNING
I wake up early to go jogging around the
campus. Then I usually go to a small spot
opposite the lake that has roses, where I like
to sit in the morning just to think. When I
arrive back at the dorms I do some stretching
and cooling off in the garden just outside the
dormitory. On days I don’t have classes, I go
for badminton a little later in the morning or
on Sunday to church.
If I have a class, I go back to my room to
shower, get dressed and check the news to
see what is happening in the world, then
head to my classroom. After my first class,
I come back and eat a snack or fruit or
something that I bought in the market on the
walk back to my dorm. If I have another class
soon after, I head back to the classrooms but
if I have a longer break I have a quick nap in
my room.

DAY IN THE LIFE
AFTERNOON
After all my classes are finished, I have lunch.
I like to get rice with vegetables and chicken
in the canteen. After, I relax in my room and
try to do some assignments and reading.
Sometimes I also stay after class to use the
on-campus Wi-Fi and study in the classrooms
instead of my room. On weekends, I go
downtown to the shopping street and
explore with my roommate or other new
friends I’ve made here.
I go to the large gym on campus from
6.30pm to 8.30pm and use the treadmill and
bike among others. The facility is nice and
membership is very inexpensive. I’m glad the
gym is nice and there is a way to stay fit and
be healthy while studying here.
EVENING
Once I get back to my room for the evening, I
make sure to finish my schoolwork and then
I like to watch sitcoms with my roommate,
or watch CCTV on the television in our dorm
room. There are lots of places to eat dinner
but I’ve been preparing many meals in my
room, cooking my own rice or sometimes I go
to other Nigerian friends’ apartments and we
will prepare foods from our home together.

STUDY ABROAD CONSISTENTLY RANKS AS ONE OF THE TOP THINGS THAT EMPLOYERS LOOK FOR.
EXPANDING ECONOMY
China’s economy is growing very quickly with new job and
investment opportunities being created every year. Tianjin’s GDP is
the fastest growing in China (around 16% per year) and there are
new foreign companies setting up and investing here every month.
The vast number of firms opening in China in recent years means
that there is a great chance to find work here after graduation. The
continued investment and expansion will also provide plenty of space
for career development and promotion in the future.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Studying abroad means you can often pick up the language very
quickly. Within a couple of months you will have learnt the basics
and if you work hard, within a year you should be able to hold a
decent conversation in the mother tongue of one fifth of the world’s
population.
A foreigner who can communicate well in Chinese is still very
rare and will make you stand out above of all other ‘wai guo ren’
(foreigners) trying to do business in China.
BUSINESS SKILLS
The Chinese are well known for their tough negotiation skills and
agile business minds. If you become familiar with Chinese business
practice, you will have the business skills to cope in business
environments all over the world.
GUANXI (NETWORKING)
It is possible to find work in China from abroad, but job websites
are not the usual way that Chinese people look for work. If you are
considering working in China in the future, living in China will ensure
building strong ‘guanxi’.
While you are a student in China, you will have time to make many
friends and get to know your professors (a professor’s pay is
relatively modest, so many have consultancy projects or businesses
on the side). Building these friendships not only creates a personal
relationship, but also a potential business relationship. If a position
comes up that you may be right for, many Chinese people would
rather give the position to a friend of a friend, whom they trust,
rather than to put out a job advert.
ACTIVITIES TO ENHANCE YOUR EMPLOYABILITY

MASTERCLASSES AN INSIGHT INTO THE WORLD OF WORK IN CHINA
MASTERCLASSES
Masterclasses will take place during your China experience.
Professionals from the foreign business community, including
business professionals, lawyers and diplomats, will be joined by
distinguished alumni from your host university; giving a unique
insight into what it is like to work in China. Your future networks will
develop as you learn more about working, living and doing business
in China.
In 2012 and 2013, a wide range of international and Chinese
companies, covering subjects ranging from diplomacy and education,
to civil rights, finance and hospitality, delivered masterclasses.
Speakers included:
• Paul Ashfar and AJ Song from Iwannabuy.com, talking about
starting their own online enterprise in China.
• Rose Chu, Project Manager and Consultant with Agile – ‘Working
with Chinese partners’.
• Alex Chan, Chinese Businessman – ‘Chinese Workplace principles’.
• Danil Kerimi from the World Economic Forum – ‘The
Hyperconnected world’.
IWANNABUY
Iwannabuy.com is an online shopping site based in Beijing, marketed
at expats living in China. The company was started from scratch in
China by former British government lobbyist, Paul Ashfar, and AJ
Song, a Chinese national. They have developed a strategy aimed at
the ever-growing expat community in Beijing and Shanghai.
ROSE CHU
Rose is a project management consultant from Hong Kong who has
worked all over the world. She has a wealth of experience working
and managing Chinese businesses, and has a great insight into
working with groups of staff in China and Hong Kong as well as the
west. She also runs a charity in China, helping rural communities by
teaching basic business and organisational skills to local business
owners.
DANIL KERIMI
Danil is an alumnus of Nankai University, who now works for the
World Economic Forum in Switzerland. Danil’s masterclass, entitled
‘The Hyperconnected World’, goes into depth about the function of
the World Economic Forum and NGOs in general and in China. A fluent
Chinese speaker, he has a sizeable work experience in China.
As one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, China offers new and exciting
career opportunities for those with the skills and experience to succeed. Whether you
intend to work in China or simply do business with Chinese companies, our masterclasses
will offer a unique insight into the world of work in China.

INTO CHINA 31
MORNING
I get up, take a shower and go out to
get something for breakfast. I usually
grab some food at the Nankai University
market, which is on the way to the School
of Economics where we have our classes.
My favourite breakfast food is one of the
Tianjin specialities – baozi – steamed buns
with various delicious fillings. When it’s
colder, I eat inside the market, but when it
gets warmer I always eat in the park by our
teaching building.
There are always some students studying
and locals practising traditional Chinese arts
– “people watching” in China is really fun!
After breakfast I head to the classroom and
do some reading before I have my first class
of the day.
Our classes last for an hour and a half, but
we take a short break after 45 minutes.

AFTERNOON
After class I meet some friends to go for
lunch. Lunch time is when I usually go to
the student canteen, because not only is it
cheap and the food good, but it’s also very
convenient. Plus I tend to bump into people
I haven’t seen for a while when I’m there.
After I’m done eating, I go to my favourite
café with really fast internet to do some
work. The afternoon classes start. I normally
have two classes with short breaks in the
middle of each class. We also have a half an
hour break in between the two courses.
EVENING
After I’m finished with classes for the day,
I meet some friends for dinner. Different
from lunch, we almost always get more
adventurous and go to one of the family-run
restaurants in the south-western part of the
University. I really like the very simple and
authentic atmosphere of these restaurants
and they serve delicious home-cooked meals
from all over China!
I get back home and do some more studying.
I work on the readings and assignments we
have to do for my major and then I usually
study Chinese for a few hours. I prefer
working in the evenings, so going to bed
at midnight is not unusual for me.
