fellow students, our online virtual classroom allows

you to engage in a highly collaborative learning

environment, while under the guidance of a skilled

To cater for the study needs of busy professionals, our online

Online interaction is via “Blackboard”, a web based learning

system which hosts our courses. Through Blackboard,

communication is entirely online. Students interact with

The online programs administered by GradSchool

are full fee-paying programs, but you only pay for the

postgraduate courses you take in the term that you

attempt them, which means you don’t have to make an

upfront fi nancial commitment to the entire program.

Fees differ from program to program, and fees for individual courses

can vary too, so please check the details of your specifi c program.

Prescribed course text and course materials (for example course

notes if applicable) are included in your course fees.

English Language Profi ciency

University of Newcastle coursework is conducted in English, so

you will need to be profi cient in the language. If English is not your

fi rst language you will need to provide evidence of your English

profi ciency through completion of ONE of the below:

The successful completion – within fi ve (5) years of the application

for study at the University of Newcastle of an approved Australian

or overseas qualifi cation as detailed in the English Profi ciency

The successful completion – within two (2) years of the following

tests:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): A score of 550

with a TWE (Test of Written English) of 4.5 in the paper-based test

less than 21.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System): A minimum

What is Weblearn and Online Learning

GradSchool’s online courses use the University of Newcastle’s

Blackboard learning facility. Blackboard is an interactive, self-

paced system you can access from anywhere in the world, at any

time that suits you.

Our instructors lead discussions in virtual classrooms over the

course of a week, which means that all students can contribute

whenever they are available. You are not tied down to attending

online classes at any particular time, so you can interact with

instructors, access course materials and stimulate debate among

your fellow students when it fi ts your schedule.

LEGEND/KEY

Semester: A Semester is generally 14 weeks in duration. There

are two semesters per academic year, generally commencing in

March and July.

Trimester: A Trimester runs for 12 weeks and there are three

trimesters per academic year, commencing in January, May and

September.

Unit: Courses are comprised of units, one course equals 10 units.

For example an MBA program consists of 120 units or 12 courses.

Master: A Masters program consists of either 80 or 120 units.

Graduate Diploma: Graduate Diploma programs are comprised

of 80 units.

Graduate Certifi cate: Graduate Certifi cate programs consist

of 40 units.

Duration: Program duration is the minimum time required

to complete the program and refers to full time study unless

otherwise indicated. Full time study consists of 3-4 courses per

semester or trimester.

These programs are designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to understand the processes of language learning and development, to develop theoretically motivated language teaching curricula, and to improve their effectiveness as teachers of English as a second or foreign language. The program also offers a general understanding of the way in which language affects and is affected by the social and cultural environment.

The programs combine theoretical perspectives with empirical studies and practical applications, and provide the opportunity for practical experience of classroom and individual teaching. The Applied Linguistics programs may be taken in the following specialisations or as a non-specialised award:■ Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)/Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)■ Translation Studies (IELTS requirement of 7.0)

Admission Criteria

Admission to the Applied Linguistics program requires prior completion of a bachelor degree in a related course area or equivalent recognised prior learning. (“Related course areas” include education, English, languages, linguistics, psychology, speech pathology.)

Overseas students must have a qualifi cation equivalent to an Australian bachelor degree, and must show evidence of competence in English language equivalent to a TOEFL score of at least 550 and a TWE score of 4.5, or an IELTS score of 6.5 with no individual band less than 6.0.

This program provides the student with an ideal combination of nursing and management education. All courses within the nursing stream are designed and taught by members of the Faculty of Health with expertise in the fi eld of nursing. The range of courses supports the acquisition of practical management skills, along with expanding your theoretical, practical, and professional understanding of the nursing industry.

The specialised nursing topics emphasise and build on already acquired skills, such as clinical practice, service evaluation, quality assurance and research methods. Combined with the management stream this provides the skills and knowledge needed to become an effective, highly professional nursing manager. These programs provide the student with the opportunity to advance in both the aviation and management fi elds. The combination of topics, from aviation human factors through to managerial courses, provides a fi rm basis for improving employment prospects in the aviation industry.

Students are assessed over a wide array of themes, from basic aviation human factors, to theoretical knowledge in crew resource management, literature reviews, and research methods. This program is designed to provide students with exposure to a range of business courses that will prepare them for business careers. The program introduces the basic business areas of accounting, fi nance, organisational behaviour, economics, marketing and management and allows students to select three elective courses to further their knowledge in a specifi c area.

Admission Criteria

Applicants for the Master of Business must have:■ a recognised bachelor degree or postgraduate diploma, or■ a recognised diploma and fi ve years work experience, or■ a recognised graduate certifi cate and two years work experience, or fi ve years proven work experience at senior management level: or■ successfully completed 20 units of postgraduate University studies with a GPA of 5 or more and two years work experience: or■ successfully completed 30 units of postgraduate University studies with a GPA of 4 or more and two years work experience.

The goal of the DBA is to increase the competencies of practising managers and business professionals and to better equip them with the capability to make a leadership contribution to their own organisations, wider industries and communities.

The DBA is coursework-focused, with two-thirds of the award related to high level coursework in business studies and one third of the award focused on research training.

The program will develop in graduates rigorous, in-depth, analytical and critically self-refl ective skills well beyond the Masters level. The DBA will also provide business executives with the tools to undertake signifi cant applied research in order to perform in an increasingly competitive global business environment.

The curriculum offers successful candidates a highly customised program including further advanced postgraduate study beyond that achieved in an MBA. Courses extend the candidate’s knowledge in new areas not previously undertaken and/or deepen their knowledge in a chosen fi eld.

Fast Track Option – University of Newcastle offers students with a recognised MBA (completed within the last 10 years) a direct entry into the second year of the program.

Admission Criteria

A recognised Master of Business, Master of Business Administration or equivalent Masters degree and a minimum of two years work experience.

Credit may be granted in recognition of a recognised MBA, completed within the last ten years.

These programs are designed to provide students with a range of analytic, strategic and leadership skills to prepare them for increasingly competitive careers in business management in the corporate and public sectors. These programs offer grounding in fundamental business areas such as accounting, fi nance, organisational behaviour, economics, marketing and information systems management.

Analytic and problem solving skills are emphasised through an applied understanding of the theoretical framework within which today’s managers must operate, as well as the acquisition of practical skills in teamwork, writing, presentation and time-management. The ability to cope with rapid organisational and technological change is developed through an understanding of organisational behaviour and organisational change and development.

Admission Criteria

This program provides graduates from diverse undergraduate disciplines with training and analytical skills in Business. Students will gain analytical and self-refl ective skills, as well as an understanding of the fundamentals of research training.

The goal of the Graduate Certifi cate of Business Research is to increase the research skills of students who may wish to pursue further research study such as a MPhil or PhD. It is a coursework program that focuses on research training. The program includes 20 units of research methods, and 20 units of dissertation preparation which includes literature review and research proposal.

These programs provide graduates with an advanced understanding of epidemiological concepts, and knowledge of the application of methods in biostatistics, social sciences, and economics in a variety of health settings. The programs have a public health focus. Additionally, there is the opportunity to develop a focus in one or more of the course areas of clinical epidemiology, molecular and genetic epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology, communicable disease epidemiology, nutritional epidemiology or biostatistics. There is a rapidly growing worldwide investment in digital content for an expanding variety of delivery platforms, ranging from interaction and high defi nition TV to personal mobile devices including phones and game consoles. Consequently there is a growing need for staff with the knowledge and skills to create this content.

This innovative program explores pathways into a range of careers across digital media technology, from web and interactive media development, digital media industries, computer games and CGI effects development to consultancy, education and more. The program allows individuals to choose courses according to their needs and background.

This program provides a mix of theoretical and practical content. It is designed for professionals who are either working, or who aspire to work in the disability fi eld in either a ‘hands-on’ or managerial capacity.

Admission Criteria

Admission to the Master of Disability Studies degree is open to applicants who have completed a relevant degree. Applicants who do not satisfy the requirements for direct entry to the award may enter via completion of the Graduate Certifi cate in Educational Studies with a specialisation in Disability Studies.

The approach used in the program blends theory and practice, with an emphasis on applying research fi ndings to best educational practices. The masters program includes coursework with the option of a research strand consisting of a minor thesis with research methodology courses.

MASTER OFSPECIAL EDUCATION

This program is intended for teachers and others with relevant experiences who wish to gain postgraduate professional qualifi cations in special education and to acquire or update their expertise in a dynamic fi eld of study and practice. The approach used in the program blends theory and practice, with an emphasis on applying research fi ndings to best teaching practices. The program includes a core of research-based coursework, the option of practicum or a workplace project or an optional minor thesis with research method courses.

Admission Criteria

Admission to the Master of Special Education is open to applicants who have completed a four year Bachelor degree or equivalent or a three year degree and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education.

Applicants who do not satisfy the requirements for direct entry to the award may enter via the completion of the Graduate Certifi cate in Educational Studies.

MASTER OFWORKPLACE INJURY MANAGEMENT AND OCCUPATIONAL REHABILITATION

This program will provide students with the opportunity to undertake study in workplace injury management, occupational rehabilitation and related topics. This postgraduate program is designed to develop advanced knowledge, critical understanding and problem solving approaches to the complex range of issues and processes associated with practice in Workplace Injury Management and Occupational Rehabilitation.

Students will, in many cases, be working in a variety of roles within this area, such as case managers, project offi cers, rehabilitation consultants and coordinators, injury management consultants and injury claims consultants.
