ENHANCING QUALITY OF LIFE AND SERVING COMMUNITIESBehind all of QMUs postgraduate courses is a strong philosophy of enhancing quality of life and serving communities. Today, graduates of QMU have used their skills and knowledge to make improvements to the lives of many different people whether that be through the development of better business practice for improved customer service, breakthroughs in healthcare, the development of creative arts and culture for peoples enjoyment, helping communities to ght for environmental justice or working with people in third world countries to rebuild their communities after years of destruction. Whatever you choose to do with your postgraduate qualication, there is little doubt that the skills and knowledge you develop while at QMU will help you to achieve success in your own right while at the same time have a positive impact on society.

KEEPING TEACHING UPTO-DATE AND RELEVANTIn order to meet the changing needs of society, lecturing staff are actively engaged in ongoing research and collaborative work with external agencies, businesses and academics from other institutions. This helps to ensure that their teaching is up-to date and relevant which means that you benet from the latest thinking and developments in the eld. As well as the involvement of teaching staff in research, we also have a strong community of full-time researchers, whose work is often cutting-edge. Again, this helps to ensure that the information being communicated through teaching is extremely progressive.

RESEARCH STRENGTHSAs well as high quality teaching, we have a strong reputation for our research excellence. Our research activity is internationally recognised and informs and adds value to our teaching at all levels. As with all UK universities, we are scrutinised on our research performance through the UK-wide Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). Our results show that 53% of our academic staff were submitted to the RAE, which indicates that QMU has the highest proportion of research active staff in the modern university sector in Scotland. Overall the results are very positive for QMU with the overwhelming majority of our research in two areas (Linguistics and Communication, Cultural & Media Studies) being recognised as internationally signicant. In both these areas we have also been able to demonstrate that our research is world leading. In Allied Health, where our research focuses primarily on policy and practice issues often in a Scottish context, we have demonstrated that we have national recognition in the majority of our work. In Drama, Dance & Performing Arts and in Business & Management Studies we have also demonstrated that the majority of our research is at least at national standard.

A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO RESEARCH HELPS US SHARE KNOWLEDGE AND FIND SOLUTIONSMulti-disciplinary research is an increasingly important element which underpins the work of the institution. This approach is designed to bring together people from different specialisms and a range of departments to work together on specic projects. Most of our research now involves collaborations with academics from other universities (throughout the UK and abroad), government bodies and agencies. This is a reection of modern methods of working

PROFESSIONAL DOCTORATESProfessional Doctorates are higher degrees that aim to offer an academic experience to students where they can demonstrate high-level knowledge and professional skills. Taught modules currently available through different named outcomes include: advancing professional practice, communications, research, consultancy, facilitation of learning in organisations, managing and facilitating change and the psychology of leadership coaching and decision-making. There is also a thesis that completes the doctoral studies at SCQF level 12. Unlike a PhD, which requires the submission of a single thesis, a Professional Doctorate is awarded for a portfolio of professional work, which would include evidence of accomplishment in each module taken, as well as submission of the thesis.

There are a variety of entry routes to Professional Doctorates, with students entering with an undergraduate degree taking longer to gain their doctorate than students entering with a PgDip or Masters degree. Students entering with an undergraduate degree would normally complete masters level studies (120 credits) as part of their doctorate as well as the doctorate modules. The Professional Doctorate can be achieved within three years on a full-time basis. For further information on the Professional Doctorates, please contact the course leader, as detailed on the relevant course entry.

PART-TIME STUDY WebCTMany students worry that they will miss the company of other students. To address this, distance learning students can use WebCT as a web-based learning environment. WebCT helps develop a genuinely supportive and co-operative environment between you, your tutor and other students. Studying part-time is hard work. It requires high levels of discipline, motivation and enthusiasm. Organising your time will be very important to your success. We recommend that you should allocate twice as much study time as time spent in lectures or tutorials. For example, if you spend two hours attending a lecture, you should allocate four hours of private study to cover the work.

BUSINESS & MBAsMBA Cultural Management Entrepreneurship International Management and Leadership/ International Management and Leadership with Hospitality Hospitality Management International Planned Events Public Services Management 36 37 38Since leaving school, I have done a number of things: a BA (Hons) in English Literature with History of Art, working in a private gallery , Photographic & Licensing Manager, National Galleries of Scotland and courses in locations and arts management, marketing, intellectual property rights, digitisation project management. Currently, I work as Commercial Development Ofcer for the City of Edinburgh Council, Culture & Leisure division. I was looking for a further qualication that combined business studies and management within the arts sector. Most postgraduate courses for museums professionals were for curators, archivists, librarians or marketers, so I decided to go for an MBA. QMU seemed to offer the only course that combined the cultural and business aspects, familiarity with the service industries and the public sector. Im nding the course good and I have been able to apply what I am learning to my needs. I have studied a wide variety of modules some requiring more academic thinking than others. Each module has been challenging in its own way and I have had to be disciplined. The course has made me realise that I actually know and understand more than I thought I did, which has added to my condence. The thought of Finance and Accounting terried me, but I actually passed in the end. I have enjoyed the learning process, but I think you get out of it what you are prepared to put in. Having experience of working and managing denitely helps especially on the more practical modules such as Marketing, Operational and Strategic Management (the best bit!). One of the best things about the course has been the opportunity to meet lots of new people from a wide range of ages, backgrounds, experience and countries (India, Bangladesh, China, Korea and Taiwan and Brazil). Whilst studying, I have been doing some voluntary work for a charity and took up a placement with a project to unite public and private sectors in education, tourism and economic development in promoting Edinburgh, led by the City Council. I think its been useful to continue working whilst studying, even if only on a part-time or temporary basis. This MBA will certainly be useful if I go back to working in museums, but has also made me think about doing further research. It has also equipped me to manage within a less-specic sector as I have increased my transferrable knowledge and skills. I do hope to get a job in museum management following my course, but opportunities are limited, as are higher earnings. I may move to consultancy work, as this would offer exibility and different experiences as well as the ability to use my strategic planning and operational experience. I will also consider moving into another area of the arts, possibly lm. I have enjoyed undertaking research on different aspects of management during my course, so further research and study is also an option. Perhaps I can combine a couple of the options. I plan to further my studies to PhD level, although at this moment I am undecided what subject to study and where I will see where my new job takes me.
