Multimedia language learning facilitiesYou will have access to the Language Learning Centre, which has threecomputerised multimedia language learning laboratories. Each is equippedwith Televic AVIDAnet Tenjin systems, satellite TV at every workstation andSmart board interactive whiteboards. The Centre also has two mini labsequipped with similar systems, which are ideal for small group tutorial workand intensive practice.

This hi-tech teaching facility is here to support you in your languagelearning and also provides a multimedia self access centre where you canpursue your own learning goals.

Student SupportYou will receive a very high level of individual support through regular tutorialswith your personal tutor. Tutorials cover a range of issues such as academicand language related concerns and adapting to university life in Britain. You are also carefully guided through the university application process at every stage.

Studying in LondonWhere is Queen Mary?Queen Mary is located in Mile End and is close to the City of London (the financial centre) and about 15minutes from central London. We are also well located fornational and international travel.

Travel Links

Underground The underground connects the College to the whole ofLondon. Mile End Station is on the Central, District andHammersmith and City lines, and Stepney Green Stationis on the District and Hammersmith and City lines. Bothstations are approximately five minutes’ walk from theMile End campus. From either station, it takes about 15minutes to reach the West End for extensive shoppingand entertainment.

AirportGatwick, Heathrow, Stansted and Luton are all within easyreach of the College. The journey can take between oneto two hours by train or underground. London City Airportis the closest and is just five miles away.

Queen Mary’s LondonThe Mile End Campus is based in the heart of east Londonwithin walking distance of Victoria Park. There are a host of entertainment venues and restaurants on your doorstep. Here is just a selection:

Canary Wharf, one of London’s main financial centres is a fifteen minute bus ride away. There are several large shopping centres, which include both designer and high street fashion. There are numerous world class restaurants, bars and a multiplex cinema.

Brick Lane is a short bus ride away and is a place where you cansample the best Indian food that east London has to offer. Thereare also many unusual shops and various Sunday Markets.

The West End is a 15 minute tube ride away and here you willfind all the major attractions that London has to offer. You canvisit the Victoria and Albert Museum or the Tate Modern forsome London culture or go shopping on Bond Street or OxfordStreet for some designer clothes.

SportsQueen Mary has a range of sports and activities for all students. Q Motion isour new state-of-the-art and industry-leading health and fitness centre. It hastwo studios that host fitness and martial arts classes. It also has a ladies onlygym and a sports hall which is ideal for badminton, volleyball, squash andbasketball.

London will be hosting the 2012 Olympics and Queen Mary is the onlyresearch-focused higher education institution with campuses close to theAthlete’s Village in Stratford. We will be involved in many ways with the Games and our students and graduates will be part of this once in a lifetimeexperience.

Faith and religious groups Queen Mary is fortunate to have a truly multicultural student population,reflecting the diverse ethnic mix of east London and welcoming students from many other countries. Why Study for theFoundation or Pre-MastersProgramme at QueenMary, University ofLondon?Foundation programmesThe International Foundation Programmes are designedespecially for international students who are interested inpursuing an undergraduate degree in the UK. Theprogramme is aimed at students who cannot directlyenter an undergraduate degree at a UK university, orneed to improve their subject knowledge and Englishlanguage and study skills before starting university study.Both foundation courses are taught on campus byuniversity staff.

Pre-Masters programme The one year Pre-Masters Programme offers a route toMasters degrees for international and EU students whoare changing disciplines, need to ‘top up’ their academicqualifications or who need to improve their level of English. The programme includes academic modules,which are taught by Queen Mary academic staff andEnglish language and study skills. The Pre-Masters Programme is fully integrated with theuniversity.

Undergraduate and Postgraduate Progression Students who successfully complete the Foundation orPre-Masters Programmes with sufficient grades can

progress onto a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees atQueen Mary, University of London. Students also have the added flexibility of applying to other institutions and our programmes are widely accepted by a number of high-ranking universities.

The International Foundation Programme in Social Science and Humanities isdesigned especially for international students who are interested in pursuingan undergraduate degree in the UK.

Programme overviewThe International Foundation Programme (IFP) offers a route to undergraduate degrees in a number of disciplines including Law,Business Management, Economics, International Relations, Politics, Historyand Geography. The programme is fully integrated with the university andincludes academic modules taught by the College’s academic staff and English Language and Study Skills.

Students study four modules: English Language and Study Skills plus threeothers from the following list:

Students who complete the International FoundationProgramme with sufficiently high grades can progress toundergraduate degrees at Queen Mary. IFP students alsohave the flexibility of applying to other institutions forundergraduate study. Students applying to otherinstitutions will be fully supported throughout theapplication process

The ISEFP is your pathway to a UK undergraduate degree inEngineering, Computer Science,Mathematics, Physics, Biology,Chemistry or Business Management.

Programme structure:The one academic year or intensive seven months ISEFPfoundation course is taught on the campus in CentralLondon thus giving you the opportunity to experience andadjust to real university life and all the benefits of living ina vibrant city.

The ISEFP course was the most incredible course I haveever studied. It has provided me not only the excellentlectures, but also with a friendly, supportive studyatmosphere. Whenever I had problems, there werealways people from the department keen to offer help.The drop-in study centre was also regularly available tohelp students. The Pre-Masters Programme is forstudents who have a first degree or diploma and would like to study for a postgraduate degree.The programme is suitable forstudents who need to ‘top up’ their academic qualifications or improve their level of EnglishStudents on the Pre-Masters Programme in SocialSciences and Humanities study three modules: Englishlanguage and study skills and two academic options fromthe following list:

Progression Students who complete the Pre-Masters Programme with sufficient grades canprogress to Masters degrees at Queen Mary. In previous years, Pre-Mastersstudents have gone on to study for Masters degrees at many other highranking UK universities across the UK.

All students take English Language and Study Skills as well as two optionalmodules, and are counselled while choosing their options during the InductionWeek. Their choices depend on what subject they want to study at degreelevel, and there are compulsory elements depending on the subject: forexample, students who wish to study for a Masters degree in the School ofBusiness and Management must take Business Studies, while those wantingto study International Relations or Global and Comparative Politics mustchoose Global Politics. Students wanting to progress to degrees in the Schoolof Economics and Finance must choose Economics and Finance andQuantitative Techniques.

This course is designed forstudents who need extra Englishsupport before starting academicstudies at Queen Mary or anotherUK University. This programmewill suit you if you have reachedthe academic requirements ofyour further study, but not therequired English language level.On this programme, you will have the opportunity todevelop and practise your academic English languageand study skills. The syllabus is topic-based which allowsfor lectures, visits, presentations and discussion on suchareas as Advertising, Business, Design, Engineering andInformation Technology.

Who is the course for?This course is for you if you:

• want to improve your academic English and study skills

• wish to progress to an academic programme at QueenMary or another UK university

• would like to study in a genuine university environment

• need to prepare for an English language or IELTSexamination

• require English to study in your home country and wanta course with a focus on academic skills such as essaywriting or presentation skills

Academic Campus English (ACE)

Entry requirements:You will have to:

• be at least 17 years old

• have reached at least an Intermediate level of English – for example atleast IELTS 4.0 or IB TOEFL 45

The length of your studies will usually depend on the language requirementsfor your next programme. The minimum period of study is 3 months.

Queen Mary’s reputation as well as its excellence inthe field of medicine was the main reason for mechoosing to study here. Not only did it have a strongacademic reputation, it is also is a welcoming placewhere I can study and socialise. Studying CampusEnglish at Queen Mary is such a good idea toimprove and practise your English in a friendlyuniversity environment. I enjoyed the experience ofstudying at Queen Mary so much that I decided topursue an undergraduate degree here in Medical

Genetics. So I highlyrecommend you do thiscourse if you want tostudy for a degree atuniversity but you need todevelop your languageskills first.

Entry DatesThe programme has four start dates a year: September, January, April andJune. The most suitable entry date for you will depend on the level of Englishyou need to start your next programme of study, and when it actually begins:January or September. The tables above are designed to help you with this.

For example, if you have IELTS 4.0 and you wish to start the Pre-Mastersprogramme in September, you need to study for a minimum of 9 months onAcademic Campus English starting in January. Or, if your IELTS is 4.5 and youwill be starting a foundation programme in January that requires IELTS 5.0,you need to study for a minimum of 3 months on Academic Campus Englishstarting in September.

Alternatively, if you already have a higher level of English, such as IELTS 6.0,and need IELTS 7.0 or 7.5 to study on a Masters or PhD programme, you willneed to study from 6 to 9 months.

Summer Campus English

The Campus English Programmeis a general English course, with a strong emphasis on helpingstudents to integrate into Londonlife and improve their Englishlanguage skills. The syllabus is topic-based which allows for visits,discussion, film and literature studies on such areas asthe Environment, Sport, Festivals, Health, Society andFashion.

Who is the course for?This course is for you if you:• want to improve your spoken and written English

• would like to study in a genuine university environment

• wish to learn more about British culture

• enjoy guided visits to historical, educational or unusualplaces of interest

Entry DatesThe programme has four start dates a year. May, June, July and August

Course Content You will receive the highest quality tuition under the personal supervision of the Programme Director. The aim of the course is to improve your overallability in English grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading and writing.Particular features of the course are:

Regular reading of newspapersWe encourage you to read the newspapers regularly to build up yourvocabulary and background knowledge about the UK. Each week we spend time in class reading and discussing current news articles.

Discussing current affairs issues and problemsWe want you to develop a lively interest in the world around you and so eachweek we have discussions on topical issues.

Weekly ‘book club’ sessionWe will introduce you to authentic extracts from British novels, plays andpoems which you will be able to analyse and discuss in your groups.

Educational visits to places in LondonLondon is one of the world’s great cities and we want you to enjoy your timehere. Each week there is a visit. Some are to well-known landmarks such asTower Bridge and the British Museum but we also visit more unusual placessuch as Borough Market, Canary Wharf and Greenwich to introduce you to the‘real London’ which tourists do not always experience.

English through British MediaThis is a popular feature of the course, which uses real British films, newsbroadcasts, television documentaries and programmes to highlight the historyand culture of the UK.

Personal tutorials with your teacherEach week you can meet with your teacher to talk over any questions you mayhave about your course or stay in London.

You will have lessons for about 21 hours per week. A typical week will alsoinclude independent study time, an educational visit, lessons in the multi-media centre and student hour.
