PERSONALITY

Sardar Patel: an Icon of natIonal UnIty

An extraordinary leader, freedom fighter and architect ofthe integration of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, betterknown as “Iron Man of India,” remains an enduring icon ofpatriotism, nationalism and the spirit of public service. In afitting tribute to this giant, India will be launching week-longcelebrations on Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary on October31, which has been aptly designated as Rashtriya Ekta Divasor National Unity Day.

Making of a Legend: Grit & Steel

A quintessential self-made man, Patel’s life storyexemplifies the sheer power of will, hard work and sincerityas he scripted a new life for himself first as a lawyer, and thenas a freedom fighter and nation-builder amid tryingcircumstances. Born on October 31, 1875 in the influentialPatidar community, he did his early schooling in Gujarat anddecided to study law in London. But the untimely death ofhis father plunged the family into a financial crisis. Fired byhis steely determination, which was to remain his definingtrait till the end, the young Patel “studied very earnestly forthe law examination and resolved firmly to save sufficientmoney for a visit to England.” He finished his LL.B from theMiddle Temple, England in June 1912 in a record two-and-a-half years and returned to India. His formidable legal acumenearned him a dedicated clientele, and he became a muchsought-after lawyer earning thousands of rupees everymonth. All this success and money, however, did not go tohis head; on the contrary, it only kindled his thirst to dosomething for society and leave a lasting legacy. “No doubt,my practice is flourishing today. I am also doing somethingbig in the Municipality. But, my practice may or may not bethere tomorrow. My money will be blown tomorrow, thosewho inherit my money will blow it.Let me leave them a betterlegacy than money,” Patel wrote later about this key momentwhich was to drive him to dedicate his life to the nation.

The Gandhi Moment

A chance meeting with Mahatma Gandhi at the GujaratClub in Ahmedabad in 1915 strengthened his resolve.Inspired by the life and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi,Patel became Gandhi’s ardent follower, and a fellow travellerin India’s freedom journey. In 1918, Vallabhbhai Pateltransformed into Sardar Patel when he led the farmers’agitation against the British who insisted on collecting taxdespite a raging flood in Khaira, Gujarat. He led a successfuland peaceful “No Tax campaign” which forced the Britishauthorities to return then land taken away from the farmers.Patel’s heroic efforts to mobilise farmers earned him the titleof Sardar, which means ‘chief ’ in Hindi and Urdu.

Sardar Patel later on deftly deployed the Gandhian

methods of peaceful resistance many times in defending therights of farmers, the subjugated and the exploited. In 1930,Sardar Patel was imprisoned for participating in the SaltSatyagraha launched by Mahatma Gandhi. His eloquentspeeches during the salt movement inspired thousands tojoin Gandhi’s mission of emancipating India from theclutches of foreign rule.

Despite internal wrangling in the Indian NationalCongress, Patel remained a staunch supporter and ally ofMahatma Gandhi. The differences over the course of thefreedom movement came out in the open when veteranleaders questioned the logic and efficacy of civil disobediencemovement linked to Gandhi's Quit India Movement in 1942.Sardar Patel robustly rallied to Gandhi’s defence, andeventually the All India Congress Committee was compelledto ratify and sanction the Quit India Movement.

Unifier of India: Iron Man

Given his formidable organizational abilities andunflinching commitment to nation-building, Sardar Patelwas appointed as the first deputy prime minister and homeminister of independent India, the crucial posts which

brought out the best in him and help create an integrated andunified India as we know it now. Patel the Unifier is justlyremembered for his iron will and firmness with which hefacilitated the integration of over 500 princely states into theframework of federal India. Patel used his fabled powers ofpersuasion and diplomacy, and combined it with a judicioususe of the threat of force to get 565 princely states to accedeto India. This was a monumental feat which earned him massadoration and gratitude, cementing his reputation as the IronMan of India.

In the aftermath of Partition, Patel was to show hisextraordinary concern for refugees, regardless of theirreligion. Moved by their plight, Patel organized relief forrefugees fleeing from Punjab and Delhi and spearheadedefforts to restore peace across the nation.

Patel: A social reformer

An appraisal of Patel’s legacy would be incompletewithout his role as a social reformer and thinker. His effortsto reform the Hindu religion went side by side with hisunstinting commitment to religious freedom. In theeconomic realm; Sardar Patel tirelessly championed self-sufficiency and promoting the growth of domestic industriesby harnessing indigenous resources, talent and expertise.

The idea of the state as an enabler of nationaldevelopment and resurgence animated Patel’s thinking. Hisvision of the State was in tune with the political values hepropagated. Nationalism and patriotism were not only thefoundation stones of a state, but were the core elementsholding it together. In Patel’s thinking, individual liberty hadto be in consonance with the provisions of the Constitution. To create a modern nation, he promoted the emancipation ofbackward communities and women through the Gandhianprogrammes and expertly utilized the higher castes for socialintegration and political mobilisation.

Patel the Globalist

A pragmatist and realist to the core, Patel was a sharpobserver of the international scene and advocated a realisticforeign policy in place of a symbolic idealism. Heconsistently advocated that no move must be adopted thatwould compromise the territorial integrity of India, and inparticular, cautioned against internationalizing the Kashmirdispute. “I should like to make one thing clear, that we shallnot surrender an inch of Kashmir territory to anybody,”Patel famously said.

While espousing friendly relations with India’s neighbors,Patel was quick to recognize that warmth should not beinterpreted as weakness. In November of 1950, Patel wrotea letter to PM Nehru outlining how the Chinese troops’entry into Tibet earlier that year resulted in a situation that“for the first time, after centuries, India’s defence has toconcentrate itself on two fronts simultaneously.” Patel hadsuggested that “we have to consider what new situation nowfaces us as a result of the disappearance of Tibet as we know

it, and the expansion of China up to our gates”. Patel’scautionary note was to prove prophetic when China invadedIndia in 1962.

Patel’s Legacy: Nation-builder

Sardar Patel may have lived only two and a half yearsafter India’s independence, but in those few months, heshaped the narrative of a modern, strong and self-reliantIndia. Often compared to Germany’s legendary leader Ottovan Bismarck for his key role in the integration of princelystates into India, Patel contributed to nation-building inmyriad ways. He was a leading light in the ConstituentAssembly of India and played a pivotal role in theappointment of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar as thechairman of the drafting committee, and the inclusion ofleaders from across the political spectrum in the process ofscripting the constitution.

Not many know it, but Sardar Patel was the foundingfather of the Indian Administrative Service and the IndianPolice Service, and introduced articles to protect theindependence and impartiality of the civil services.

Besides his colossal achievements, Sardar Patelexemplified humility and Gandhian ideals of simple livingand high thinking. His personality was such that he inspiredinstant respect and affection, even amongst those whodiffered with him. He remained hugely popular till his dyingday. More than a million people attended his cremation inSonapur in Bombay, which included Prime Minister Nehru,C. Rajagopalachari, and President Rajendra Prasad. In atribute to his role in creating civil services, more than 1,500officers of India's civil and police services gathered to mournat Patel's residence in Delhi a day after his death and pledged“complete loyalty and unremitting zeal” in India's service.

Freedom Song

Decades after his death, Sardar Patel’s absolute love anddevotion for India continues to inspire all those who areengaged in the resurgence of India. Tributes and honourscontinue to pour in for this legendary figure to this day. Timemagazine put Sardar Patel on the cover in its January 27,

1947 issue, and called him “The Boss.” Sardar Patel wasfinally conferred India’s highest civilian honour, the BharatRatna, in 1991.

In his public life and as a founding father of the Republicof India, he tirelessly exhorted people to live true to theirideals and place country and society above self. In theconflicted times we live in, Sardar Patel’s address at a

meeting in Alwar in 1948 is an eloquent reminder to thepeople of the responsibilities of a free citizen to ensure theirfreedom and that of their country. "Guns can protect freedomfrom aggressive designs of neighbours or other foreign states. But internally, it is the honest core of the people and the truerealisation of the responsibilities of a free citizen that alonecan save freedom from the machinations of self-seeking andinterested parties and individuals.”

Indian Film Week – Bollywood

Blockbusters, Puskin Cinema

6-12 October 2016

Following its long-time tradition,The Amrita Sher-Gil Cultural Centreorganized a film festival at theprestigious Puskin Cinema ofBudapest from 6-12th October, 2016.This year’s film week showcased Hindicinema of India, commonly known asBollywood, with a purpose ofpresenting the many faces and coloursof this unique part of film industry. To realize this concept, the organisersselected a variety of blockbusters fromseveral eras of Bollywood andendeavoured to bring a wide selectionof different genres and movie types tothe cinema hall.

The list featured two pieces of theso called family and marriage movies, agenre highly popular in the West butlesser-known in Hungary, includingthe trend setting classic and the latestproduction of our time from thefamily movie series of seven, associated with the director Sooraj R.Barjatya. These movies glamourize theconservative Indian lifestyle of thelarge families while the countless

religious and family celebrations, rituals, customs and traditions playcrucial role in their stories. In 1994 theexotic Hum Aapke Hain Koun spicedwith numerous songs and dance itemslaunched a trend of this genre andgained massive popularity forBollywood in the western world.Premiered in 2015, Prem Ratan DhanPayo was a fine example of how muchcan be taken from these film types andbe transformed into contemporaryand enjoyable entertainment for theaudience of today. The most beautifulpiece of eternal classic from the kingof romances, Yash Chopra, Veer-Zaara, the story of a Hindu-Muslimlove saga with a fantastic cast of thegreatest stars was the highest visitedshow during the week. In contrast, thethird romance in our programme,Dum Laga Ke Haisha was a heart-

warming representative of a new, boldly innovative, experimenting trendwhich, from time to time uses themethods of art cinema and questionstraditional clichés of the industry.Premiered in 2016, the latest crime hit,Wazir was also scheduled to bescreened during the film week. Theclosing accord of the festival was areal delicacy. Science fiction moviesare rarely made in India, but Koi… milgaya, hitting cinemas in 2003 becamesuch a blockbuster that, together withits sequel series they launched thesuccessful journey of superhero-movies. However, Koi…mil gaya isstill of mixed genres which blends andserves the western elements withIndian flavours.

The Inauguration of the eveningwas preceded by a Reception held atPuskin Cafe by Ambassador on 6thOctober, 2016, which was attended 80guests comprising leaders, bureaucrats, film fraternity, journalistsand Indologists. Mushti

15 November 2016

This was the second time thatHungarian audience could enjoy therare Rudra-veena concert in Hungary. She arrived with his guru, RajeevJanardan, who performed two dayslater in the Centre.

Sharada had been introduced toIndian and World music at a very earlyage which led to an in-depthunderstanding of the same. Herlifelong engagement in many musicalgenres and instruments prepared herfor her Rudravina.

The instrument found Sharada inParis, where she was captivated by itsrolling drone and stunning form ondisplay in a museum. Compelled to

explore the Rudravina, she returned toIndia to find a guru to train her in thisform of music and to have her owninstrument crafted. Under the GuruShishya Parampara she began herintense riyaz sessions, sometimesstudying up to ten hours a day. Withthe assistance of her Guru, PanditRajeev Janardan, she developed hertechnical and vocal skills in Dhrupadand Dhamar, a comprehensiveknowledge of the ragas, sophisticationin her ragadari, all of which lent herthe precision of expression makingher music such an achievement.

The rudra veena (also known asbeen or bin; Hindi: :nzoh.kk) is a largeplucked string instrument used inHindustani classical music. It has along tubular body made of wood orbamboo with a length between 54 and62 inches. Two large-sized, roundresonators, made of dried andhollowed gourds, are attached underthe tube. Twenty-four brass-fittedraised wooden frets are fixed on thetube with the help of wax. There are 4main strings and 3 chikari strings.

Rudra is one of the several namesof Shiva, the Hindu god. It is anancient instrument, which is rarelyplayed in India.

“How should we approach these ancient

Sanskrit stories as young artists, and theatre

makers? Where to begin? A tale is a

remembrance. A tale is forever. We jump into

the Ocean of the Streams, so it rushes on. We

are story tellers. We use our arms and feet.

Also words, images, memories of a distant

past. And rhythm, lights, bodies. ”

Humour of the show is animportant feature of the piece; notonly the text conveys it, but theperformance of the actors add their

own sense of humour, which come indue time and place to add theathmosphere to the play. Thedecoration is quite simple andsymbolic, to place the piece in a neutralspace in world; the imagination has tofill up the rest and the viewer has toput the tales into context and draw theconclusion from the lessons of thestories.

The performance was very wellappreciated by the audience. Furthershows are arranged in the theatre;ASCC is also planning to bring a

simpler version of the piece to theCultural Centre under the aegis of theoccasional programmes in near future.

Bollywood megosztja a hazai nézőt.Sokan vagyunk, akik első látásrabeleszerettek ebbe a rendkívül látványos,színes és romantikus stílusba, egyeseknekazonban túlságosan harsányak ésérzelgősek a világ egyik legjelentősebbfilmgyártó központjának – mely közel semazonos az indiai filmgyártással, annakmindösszesen 43%-át adja – művei. Ahelyi filmek nagy mértékben különböznekaz európai vagy amerikai alkotásoktól,jellemző rájuk a műfajkeveredés, a sok-sokzene és a melodramatikus történetvezetés.Bár Hollywood hatására a filmek egyrerövidebbek és egyre tisztább műfajúak,még napjainkban is erősen érződik amaszálá hatás. A maszálá film elnevezés afűszerkeverékre utal, ebben a jellegzetesenindiai filmtípusban is mindenből van egykicsi: a három-négy órás, szünettelmegszakított filmekben jut idő szerelemre, családi gondokra, akcióra, látványostáncos betétekre és humorra egyaránt –mindenre, amit csak a filmnéző kíván.Nem véletlen, hogy ezeket a filmeket acsalád együtt nézi, hiszen mindenki találbennük a saját kedvére valót.

A 2004-es Veer-Zara sem tisztánromantikus film, a sok-sok dallaltarkított melodráma mellett egyizgalmas tárgyalótermi drámát is kap anéző – 192 percbe simán belefér. Atörténetet a pakisztáni-indiaikonfliktust árnyalja: Zaara HaayatKhan (Preity Zinta) jómódú, befolyásoscsaládból származó pakisztáni lány, aki

Shah Rukh Khan a bollywoodi filmegyik legjelentősebb személyisége, nemvéletlenül hivatkoznak rá Bollywoodkirályaként: mind színészként, mind

magánemberként hihetetlenülszimpatikus, akit egyszerűen nem lehetnem imádni. Több mint 80 filmbenszerepelt ezidáig, és számos díjatbegyűjtött. Kezdetben főleg rosszfiúkatjátszott, de aztán rátaláltak aromantikus szerepek – a nézőklegnagyobb szerencséjére. Nemcsakjóképű, remek színész is, amit a Veer-Zaarában is bizonyít, ahol azonbannem egyedül remekel. Igazi sztárparádéez a film, olyan nagyágyúk brillíroznakbenne, mint Hema Mailini vagy a Veernagybátyjának szerepében feltűnőAmitabh Bachchan.

De a sikerhez nem elég néhány nagynév. Mi lehetett a titka mégis a Veer-Zaarának?

A Vezér fordulatos akció-krimikéntelhibázott alkotás, a bollywoodi filmekreoly jellemző műfajkeverés éshangnemváltások miatt azonban nagyonis szimpatikus.

Smivel a tragédia a férfi hibájából történik, felesége (Aditi Rao Hydari) is eltávolodiktőle. A gyásztól és lelkiismeret-furdalástólszenvedő főhős azonban összebarátkozikegy idős, kerekesszékbe kényszerültsakkmesterrel (Amitabh Bachchan), aki

történetesen szintén lánya halálánakfeldolgozásával birkózik. Pláne, hogygyanús körülmények egy befolyásosminiszter bűnrészességére utalnak.

Bejoy Nambiar szemei előtt amegtévesztés rendezői célja lebeghetett,és a magamfajta, indiai filmeket elvétvenéző, nyugati kíváncsiskodó érezheti is ahurkot a nyaka körül: amenetrendszerűen érkező fordulatokhelyett egy érzelmi hullámvasút ejtcsapdába. A Vezér mind műfajkeverés,mind hangnemváltás tekintetébenelképesztő ívet jár be. A gyászukkalbirkózó szerelmesek melodrámai szálátballadaszerű dalok sodorják a giccsirányába, szenvedésüket azonbanmeglepően erőszakos jelenetek törikmeg. A gyermekveréssel fenyegetőgonosz feltűrt ingujja még szimplánborzongató, a lábait elvesztőtanítómester megkéselése éskerekesszékének birtokba vétele máregyenesen döbbenetes. A videoklipekbe

A filmlegfinomabban kidolgozott, mesebeliháttérszála is hozzá köthető: elvégre azélet sakktábláján olykor a jelentéktelengyalogfiguráknak is megadatik akisemberi revans lehetősége.

he Gresham Palace (Gresham-palota) is a building in Budapest, Hungary; it is an example of Art Nouveauarchitecture. Completed in 1906 as an office and apartment building, it is today the Four Seasons Hotel BudapestGresham Palace, a luxury hotel managed by Four Seasons Hotels. It is located along the River Danube, adjacentto Széchenyi Square and the eastern terminus of the Széchenyi Chain Bridge.

The site was once occupied by Nákó House, a neo-classical palace built in 1827. In 1880, the London-based Gresham LifeAssurance Company bought the property, at a time when it was illegal to invest money in stocks, but rental income was awise investment. The company later decided to build its foreign headquarters on the site, and decided that they needed agrander setting for them. They commissioned local architects Zsigmond Quittner and József Vágó to design the newstructure, and in 1904, they began construction of the Gresham Palace, which was completed in 1906 and opened in 1907.It was named after the 16th-century English financier Sir Thomas Gresham, the founder of the Royal Exchange in London.

Originally, the palace served as an office building as well as a residence for senior staff of the Gresham company. Duringthe occupation after World War II, the Red Army used the building as a barracks. Eventually, it became decrepit and wasused as an apartment building during the People's Republic of Hungary. In 1990, following the end of the communist regime, the national government presented the palace to the city of Budapest.

Oberoi Hotels entered into an agreement to manage a hotel in the building in 1991, but ensuing legal battles withresidents of the building caused Oberoi to drop out in 1995. In 1998, Gresco Investments Ltd acquired the building andreceived approval from the Budapest Heritage Board to reconstruct it as a luxury hotel while retaining its original ArtNouveau architecture. Gresco raised $85 million for renovations and in 1999 Four Seasons agreed to oversee thereconstruction and manage the new property.

In 2001, the building was bought by the Irish investment company Quinland Private. They extensively rebuilt thestructure as a luxury hotel, restoring such original details as a large staircase, stained glass, mosaics, ironwork, and wintergardens. The hotel reopened in June 2004. In November 2011, the hotel was bought by the State General Reserve Fund ofOman, though Four Seasons continues to manage it. It currently has 179 guest rooms, including 17 suites.
