    RACE STEWARD .....•.... •

Well, we finally had the first race of the new season and other than the~ weather, things went pretty well. ..,

There were the usual first race problems, what with a new race steward and a new race organization, but the racing was good.

A new system, to Conference, was used for the novice races. This allowed the novice drivers to get more practice at starts, and the drivers I talked to liked the idea.

A couple of things came up at Portland that I think I should bring up.

Under a yellow flag condition there is no passing, even if the lead car waves you by. This did happen in race group one, but as luck would have it, nothing happened.

In race group three, a car left the track and entered the paddock and then joined the race again. Rule #712 strictly prohibits this and the car was disqualified.

When the Club Ford rules were written last year they were taken from the Oregon/NW Region SCCA rules. Now as a result of the Oregon Region's new ruling that allows unlimited body modifications within the current Formula Ford dimensions, and after the Competition Committee meeting on Saturday, we will follow their lead ~ and allow the body mods also. ~

There were two requests for classification, and the results are:

Nissan Sentra: G Production (pfr) H Production (pfi)

Nissan 200SX DX: F Production (pfr) G Production (pfi)

    Dan Rowland Race Steward

    LICENSE DIRECTOR ...................... .

The Oly race and the PIR race both went very smoothly - we had very few problems on or off the track.

At Olympia we had one passing under the yellow and at Portland we had a driver reverse his course while entering the racing pits. Both problems were dealt with accordingly.

We seem to have the same problem with people not using their mirrors enough and pointing faster cars around. Novices as well as senior drivers need to be aware of this problem. Novices please read your rule book, you will find a wealth of information in it.

I hope you are enjoying the two-s~ format for your novice races. So far~ most comments are positive. Let's keep up the clean racing and see you at the next event.

    Paul Homewood License Director

  • SIMON SAYS

As NorthWest Region registrar, I would like to thank all the ICSCC drivers who entered our jointly-run Olympia Regional Race and Novice Program.

For the curious, there were 101 entries with a total of 80 dif-ferent drivers.

With both novices and regional racers, there was also an Oregon Region SCCA driving school, so some drivers entered more than one event.

Thirty-seven ICSCC drivers, including 19 novices, raced the regional races with 39 SCCA drivers, including 17 new drivers who ran the driving school. In the Regional entries, there were four drivers who belong to both ICSCC and SCCA.

It was beautiful weather on Saturday and it didn't pour on Sunday. Let's do it again! Olympia is a fun track and if all the ICSCC drivers would ask that the next joint event be a points race, it would be an added incentive to enter.

Thanks again to all those ICSCC drivers and crew who waited patiently in the registration lines. Special thanks to all the ICSCC workers who turned out to help put on the race. Both clubs, working together, made the weekend a success.

Hope to see you all at our Double National!

    Cathy Simon NW Region Registrar

    MEMO MUSINGS .

In spite of everything we have done this year to move the memo ~ mailings along and get them to ~ drivers and workers in a timely manner, we continue to be broadsided by the postal service.

Mail going to addresses in the United States seems to be delivered within a few days of its postmark in the Portland area. But mail addressed to Canadian drivers is still taking just one day shy of eternity.

Race chairmen and timing chiefs are asked to take special note of the results in this issue of the memo. The results follow exactly the format approved by Conference earlier this year and should be used as a model for how they are to be submitted for both the memo and the points keeper.

On the subject of points keeper, please note in the listing of officers that Dave Gural has a new address. Results should now be mailed to him at:

    701 S 38th Ave. #3 Yakima, Wn. 98908

Deadline for the next memo is June 23.
