1. Project Summary

A. Provide a summary describing your efforts in accomplishing the goals and outcomes of the project: were objectives met, were goals modified, and was the project completed in a timely manner.

The College of the Desert continues to be one of the best-known and active student support programs on the COD campus. Our students continue to successfully transfer to four-year institutions. Many of the math and the science faculty have become more involved with the program by assisting in the high school visits, by making special presentations to the students as part of our monthly Science & Math Lecture Series, by serving as workshop facilitators, and by becoming more interested in the success of their students.

During this funding period most of the objectives were met. Those that have not yet been met are mostly near completion. During the fall semester we were able to provide many services to the MESA students – some that were previously described and some that were newly created. We filled several facilitator/tutor positions with well-qualified students, and their efforts have been greatly appreciated by the students. We offered workshops in computer programming, differential equations, linear algebra, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus I, II, III, physics and chemistry. There is increased success in this area, with attendance at the workshops slowly increasing. The fact that a large number of our MESA students are employed or have family commitments continues to affect their ability to attend workshops.

The Campus Advisory Council met once during the funding period; however, the director continues to interact regularly with most of its members. MESA students continue to be active in events sponsored by ASCOD, This is the student body’s association that encourages involvement on campus. MESA students were involved in other campus-wide activities and participated in that promoted the involvement of the high schools. This past year two MESA students served on the ASCOD Board.

The extension of the funds to December 31, 2010 gave an opportunity to provide additional services to students. We have made a concentrated effort to schedule activities to help the new students in MESA become more involved in the MESA activities than in the past and become acquainted with the continuing students.

Generally, the feedback that we have received from students, faculty and administration is that MESA is a program on the COD campus that has an enviable reputation that can only grow with the cooperation of MESA and the college.

In addition to the time extension, the additional funds have made it possible for the MESA students to complete research projects with UC Riverside in the area of atmospheric pollution. Students did an excellent job in the design and implementation

of their projects and one group produced results that were presented at student paper competition during the fall semester.

1. Project Summary (Continued)

During the funding period, COD continued the implementation of an NSF/S-STEM scholarship program that is providing scholarships to both continuing and transferring students. More than 35 scholarships have been awarded in the amounts of $3,000, $4,000 or $5,000 during the first two years of the program.

1. Project Summary (Continued)

B. MESA requires the strong institutional support of the project. Please identify who has been involved in this effort, and their contribution ,i.e. CEO, CIO, CSSO, Faculty, etc. BE BRIEF

The MESA Program at COD has now become a separate entity in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences since the reorganization of the college’s academic structure. Through the efforts of the director, strong ties remain with both the math and science departments which were also formed as a result of the reorganization. We retain, however, our dedication to the tenets of MESA with focus on the successful transfer of MESA students to four-year institutions. It continues to be the only student program on campus that has specific academic requirements for its students and that serves under the Vice-President of Academic Affairs. Support for the program from the College President, the Division Dean, the Vice-President of Academic Affairs and other administrative positions continues to be strong.

C. Briefly describe student participation in professional chapters and organizations, as well as highlights of student internships

The typical COD student is reluctant to join a professional organization at this point. Some have joined organizations like the American Geophysical Union and the Mathematics Association of America. The major student activity during the funding period consisted of two separate project that were supervised by the MESA Director. These projects were the development of a solar charging golf cart and research studies in the area of atmospheric chemistry and pollution. The solar golf cart project culminated in the participation in the Palm Desert golf cart parade in October 2009 while one of the atmospheric studies research in a paper presented at a student research paper competition in September 2010.

D. Please describe the efforts undertaken to ensure participation by students from groups with the lowest eligibility to four year institutions in math, engineering and science majors.

College of the Desert students are reflective of a diverse population in the Coachella Valley. Approximately 55% of our student population is Hispanic, 3% is African American; however, more than 70% of our MESA enrollment is from these populations. We continue to target the traditionally under-represented students from the area high schools and make our student activities known to the public. Working relationships with the local high schools continue to develop through activities involving the math instructors at COD and the high schools, and the involvement of MESA students in educational outreach activities. In this way, we feel that we will continue to see an increase in student enrollment among low income and under-represented students into the math and science-based majors at COD. Our goal, of

course, is to ensure, as much as possible, their graduation from this college and their successful transfer to four-year institutions.

5. Project Evaluation

A. Identify and describe those activities that were particularly effective in reaching the goals and outcomes of the project.

There are many aspects of the program that certainly helped MESA program succeed at COD. The new organizational structure provide an excellent working relationship with the Math and Science Departments, the Lead Faculty in each area and the new Dean. In addition, the College President and the new Vice President of Academic Affairs have displayed strong support for the program. The MESA Center has been a major factor in the recruitment and retention of the students. The computers that are located in the center are connected to the Science & Math lab server, making it more convenient for students to complete assignments and research papers. Within the MESA Center, the refreshment area that has been set up for students, has also helped in recruitment of several students. MESA Student Advisory Council helps with the planning of all events and activities. These students also provide an avenue of communication for other MESA students other than directly to me. We continue to build on our relationships with the high schools; our effort to get the word out to potential MESA students at high schools was certainly apparent by the number of new students joining the program each fall.

Activities that were especially effective this year were online MESA Orientation course, the expansion of application of the StrengthsQuest assessments for the students in this course, and the summer research project. This third activity gave students an opportunity to work as a team on a problem and prepare a poster for presentation in a student paper competition. Feedback from the students about these activities was very positive.

5. Project Evaluation (Continued)

B. Identify those activities that were not effective in reaching the goals and outcomes of the project, and explain why not.

The move of the MESA Center to an area on campus not near the Science and Math Buildings appears to have been overcome, however it serves to remind us that location of the center in a place convenient for the students. The numbers are now increasing; however, I believe there are still many students we miss or do not serve fully because of our location. Improvement in the Academic Excellence Workshops has been steady, but there is still a lot of room for improvement. Student attendance has improved, but in some courses, is still disappointing. The establishment of the Industry Advisory Council has not happened due to available industry in our area, however individual industries have stepped in from time to time to have a significant impact. Student membership in various organizations remains low, and I have difficulty getting students to apply for scholarships and internships. In general, many have the feeling that they have no chance at these opportunities and let them pass by instead of taking advantage of them. Building on our relationships with the nearby institutions has not been successful through CAMP and AMP Programs; but relationships with our nearby institutions are in place as a result of other avenues.

C. Indicate if this evaluation was conducted by a project staff member or an outside evaluator. Identify the person responsible for conducting the evaluation.

7. Project Recommendations

A. Identify specific recommendations regarding this project. Take into consideration those who may wish to replicate this project within their own district and/or college, i.e., personnel required, facility space, materials, equipment, lead time in planning efforts, community and/or business support, institutional support, etc.

The MESA program at COD has continued to grow during the funding period. I believe the two most important components of this success continue to be an organizational support and the MESA Center itself. The increasing support from the Science and Math faculty is critical to the successes of the Program, and the working relationship that has been established with them guarantees their continued support of the program. From the perspective of the student, the MESA Center is the most important aspect of the Program. A center that provides them with a place of study, visit, enjoy a snack or just relax has been an important incentive for students to join the Program and become active members. My office, being located in the Center, has also provided easy access for the students when they have a problem or just want to visit. Thus, the general recommendations that might be made include the acquisition of a physical center that is conducive to student learning and interaction; support from the faculty who are involved in the daily class workings of the MESA students; and the director’s accessibility to and comfort level with the students.

7. Project Recommendations (Continued)

B. General Comments:

The MESA Program of COD continues to assist those students who are considering a math- or science-based major. Reaction from everyone who has learned of the program has been extremely positive and encouraging. As other programs on campus see the various MESA activities, they attempt to incorporate some of them into their programs. It is very important to mention that without the support of the Math & Science faculty, the Division Dean, the Vice President of Academic Affairs and the College President, the program would not be as successful as it is. I remain confident that the support of these people will be maintained in the future, thus ensuring a strong and successful MESA Program for many more years.
