As I write this the administration of BritishHome Stores is dominating the headlines(see p8), and if, as seems likely, it is sold offpiece by piece, it will be the largest retailcollapse since Woolworths in 2008.

BHS is a shining example of what happensif stores suffer from under-investment foryears and acting as if the Internet had neverhappened. Many of the branches are inprime sites, so I expect itll go the way ofWoolworths, and be remembered morefondly than it was thought of during its day.

While its lighting offer remains one of thelargest on the high street, you cant help butfeel that it missed a major opportunity withthe rest of its interiors offer. Despite selling a range of furniture products you wouldnever have known it in-store, where you

mainly saw pillows, towels and bedlinen. The chain has a core customer base that I

imagine would have been happy to buymore furnishings (which it introduced in1929, a year after its foundation) from it, ifonly they had known they existed.

Would-be buyers, understandably, willwant nothing to do with the chains 571mforecast pension deficit. This is likely to endup with the Pensions Protection Fund, whichwill affect millions of people as it is fundedby a levy on other pension schemes and willneed to make up any shortfall.

If some of the 400m in dividends paid tothe Green family in previous years had beenused to top up the two BHS pension funds, one might wonder what position theyd be intoday: they had a surplus as recently as 2008.

Meanwhile, the ending of takeover talksbetween Victoria and Lano (see p14), appearsnot to have been expected by investors.Victorias share price dropped 7.5% (1.19) inthe week after the announcement. Still, theyare 12.18 higher than they were beforeGeoff Wilding took charge in October 2012.Investors will be hoping current discussionswith suitable businesses in the UK andabroad will have a more positive outcome.

The failure of British HomeStores shows whathappens if you dont keepup with the times, and tellshoppers what youve got

EBITA losses were reduced from 3m to 1m.New branches in Aberdeen and Plymouth will open in late

summer, followed by its 100th store, Thanet, on Boxing Day.We are delighted to be reporting significant growth

across all areas of the group. These results demonstrate theprogress that has been made in developing ScS into a

strong national brand with three very clear retail offers upholstered furniture, flooring and our House of Fraserconcessions all supported by an improving onlineplatform. Our sales order intake is the highest ever achievedin this period, a strong performance against tough prioryear like for like comparatives (up 7.8%), says David Knight,ScS chief executive.

Current trading, supported by enhanced marketingspend, remains strong, including the key Easter salesperiod. This gives us good visibility for the second half andalthough the key May Bank Holiday day trading period isstill to come, the board currently expects results for thisfinancial year to be modestly ahead of market expectations.Looking to the future, we are excited about our growthprospects, including the continued growth from ourconcession agreement with House of Fraser, our flooringoffering and online proposition. We continue to identifynew store opportunities for further growth within our targetareas, adds Knight.

There have been 30 expressions ofinterest in British Home Stores followingthe homewares and clothing chain goinginto administration, putting almost11,000 jobs at risk.

The 164-store chain was continuing totrade as Interiors Monthly went to press.

The group has been undergoingrestructuring and, as has been widelyreported, the shareholders have been innegotiations to find a buyer for thebusiness, said administrators Philip Duffyand Benjamin Wiles, Duff & Phelps mds. These negotiations have beenunsuccessful.

The company has debts of 1.3bn,including a 571m pension deficit.

Last year, Retail Acquisitions, aconsortium of lawyers and investorsbought the chain from Sir Philip Greenfor 1. At the time, Retail Acquisitionssaid it would deliver 160m of funding tohelp turn around the chains fortunes, but it has not been able to raise the sum.It had been due to announce a new60m loan in April, but failed to do so.

Separately, Retail Acquisitions hadbeen hoping to raise 100m fromproperty transactions.

The lease on the Oxford Street, London

store was sold for 30m far less thanhoped for. The lease on a Sunderlandstore was sold to Sports Direct for 2m.

In an email to staff, Dominic Chappell,Retail Acquisitions director, said: It is witha deep heart that I have to report, despite a massive effort from the team,we have been unable to secure a funderor a trade sale. I would like to say it hasbeen a real pleasure working with all ofyou on the BHS project, one I will neverforget. You all need to keep your headsheld high, you all have done a great job,but remember that it was always goingto be very, very hard to turn around.

Last year the chain lost 70m.

Shares sold: Former DFS owner Advent has reduced its stake in the retailer, selling 90m worth ofshares. The group sold 30million shares about 14.1% of the chains shares to institutionalinvestors at 300p, a 6.5% discount (21p) to the share price. Advent floated DFS in March last year at255p a share and also sold a 15% stake in October at 295p a share. The sale sees Advents holdingreduced to 24.1%. It will be able to sell more shares after the expiry of a 90-day lock-up period.

Sales up but margins downfor Bensons and HarveysBensons and Harveys experienced strong sales growth inthe second half of last year but margins slipped.

Parent Steinhoff International says like for like salesincreased by 3% with total sales up 11%. In euros, thanks toSteinhoffs Frankfurt stock market listing, sales were 22%higher at 409m.

UK sales were equally split between beds and furniture. But, operating margin dropped from 7.1% to 5.4% as it

accelerated the refurbishment of Bensons stores and theconversion of Cargo branches.

Margins are expected to recover in the short-term givenmarket share gains and increased volumes now inherent inthe integrated supply chain, says the company.

UK operations increased revenue by 22% to 409m.Constant currency growth was 11%, with like for like salesfor the group rising by 3% during the period under review.

The group says the bedding retail market continues toshow signs of growth and 78% of the bedding stores havenow been refitted or refurbished to the new store format.

The strategy to move the store estate to more relevantretail parks is gaining traction, it says. During the periodunder review the group closed 22 stores while opening 25.

The key driver of performance continues to be growth inthe bedding market, while other furniture categories arestarting to show signs of growth in an exceptionallycompetitive market, adds the company.

Consumers increasingly turned to theirsmartphones for online shopping fortheir homes in March.

Home sales rose by 33% according tothe IMRG Capgemini eRetail Sales Index, with an average order value of 93, thehighest since October 2012. This wouldhave been higher but for a 12% drop ingarden sales. Combined the sector saw a26% sales rise, the highest increase sinceFebruary 2016.

    Overall online sales (excluding travel)

rose by 15% in the first quarter, doublethe rate in 2015.

In the quarter smartphone growth wasalmost nine times that of tablets with96%, compared to just 11% for tablets.

Sales via smartphones continue tosurge ahead. Larger screen sizes haveenhanced the user experience onsmartphones over recent years which is akey factor in the shift towards shoppingon these devices, says Tina Spooner,IMRG chief information officer.

Shoppers get smart with online buysSmartphone is the fastest growing

channel in the UK online retail market conversion rates were 50% higher in thequarter than the same period last yearand average online transaction valuesreached a record high of 85 duringMarch, says the Index.

Not surprisingly, many retailers areplacing a significant focus on theirmobile strategy as consumers shifttowards handheld devices whenpurchasing online, adds Spooner.

The chain has planning permission tobuild a store in Guildford that will see thedemolition of the towns former 1930sfire station.

Guildford Borough Councils planningcommittee approved the plans, despite37 objection letters from residents.

Whats the starting point when creating a

flooring design? The material? Or perhaps

colour is at the top of the list?

    With Amtico Signatures LVT collection

there are so many designs in wood and stone

effect, and the Spectrum palette within the

abstract design type offers all the colour con-

sumers could need. But choosing a floors

material and colour is only half of the story.

The laying pattern is what can really define a

floors style. Amtico Signature provides many

options for laying patterns, and each one is

    adaptable and straightforward to fit.

Laying patterns are constructed of separate

components, with each able to be cut from

the same or a different product. Varying these

    components between woods, stones and

abstracts, or different colours within one prod-

uct, is a simple yet effective way of creating

    multiple and varied visual impacts.

Amtico Signatures Kite laying pattern, for

example, demonstrates how creativity can be

achieved by working with more than one

colour. Kite is an angular pattern made up of

four components. Choosing two tonally similar

colours creates a subtle pattern with an angu-

lar line segmenting each kite section.

Introducing a contrasting third colour turns the

    Flooring tailored to suitA

    dvertising

    feature: Am

    tico International

The layingpattern canreally define afloors style

focus on to the kite shapes, and a fourth

colour adds depth and definition to the overall

    floor design.

Varied Block is a less visually diverse pat-

tern with the ability to add creativity to a large

    open space. This large-scale geometric

design is created using five different tiles of

equal length, but varied widths. The overall

appearance of the wider blocks separated by

the narrower strips is a stepped effect that can

work across the entire floor, or as a central

zone smartly bordered from the overall space.

Creativity is at the heart of British designed

and made Amtico Signature. So, in addition to

a comprehensive product range and variety in

laying patterns, unique floors can be created.

A lift for the bodySealy supports weightlifting champion Zoe Smithwho recognises the benefits of a good nights sleep

Bed manufacturer Sealy UK understandsthat sleep has a massive impact onsporting performance. Not only does itimprove mental sharpness and energysupplies, but as we sleep our bodiesrepair themselves, allowing muscles andtissues to recover.

To promote this intrinsic link, thebrand has teamed up with several bignames in sport as part of its World ofSport campaign.

One of these athletes is Britishweightlifting champion Zoe Smith, whois experiencing the biggest year of hercareer. Hoping to qualify for a place atthe Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro thissummer, she follows a strict trainingregime and knows first-hand theimportant role rest plays in helping keepher at the top of her sport.

Smith, who recently won a bronzemedal at the European Championships inFrde, Norway, feels that training, nutrition and sleep are vitally importantfor improving performance. Recognisingthat sleep helps the body to naturallyrestore itself, especially after an intensive

session in the gym, she takes her sleepseriously.

During the day, athletes aresurrounded by an entire team of supportstaff to make sure every last thing we dois going to aid our performance, butcome night time, its not uncommon forsub-par sleep to set back the wholeprocess, she says.

Smith is facing yet another challengeon her road to the Olympics: a kneeinjury.

I secured a bronze medal at theEuropean Championships in the clean-and-jerk with a lift of 119kg,although I was hoping to do better. Ipicked up a knee injury right before the championships, and I also have twobulging discs in my back, so at one pointI didnt actually think Id be able tocompete, so with that considered its nottoo bad I suppose.

Although Im a little disappointed, Immoving forward and preparing for mynext steps. Sleep will be a big part of myrecovery and Ill be placing even moreimportance on getting the rest I need to

be back on form ahead of the BritishChampionships in June, she says.

Sealy will help Smith on her road torecovery as shell be sleeping on a HybridFusion, ensuring her body gets thesupport it needs as she recuperates.

Neil Robinson, Sealy UK sales andmarketing director, says: We weresaddened to hear of Zoes injuries at such a critical time of her training but are delighted that she has done so wellat the European Championships in spiteof this. Weve been following her careerfor the past few years and hercommitment to sleep makes her theperfect advocate for the World of Sportcampaign.

At Sealy we understand the vital rolesleep plays when it comes to sportingsuccess and were dedicated to workingwith some of the countrys leadingathletes to ensure they enjoy the deepsleep they need to be at the top of theirgame. We cant wait to watch Zoescontinued success throughout thesummer.Visit: www.sealy.co.uk

Both the Serene and Grace mattresseshave received copious amounts of fivestar reviews earning Slumberland thedouble Best awards.

Comments include:The comfiest bed I have ever had the

pleasure of sleeping in Amazed how much this mattress has

improved my poor sleep. It looks sostylish and feels so comfortable andluxurious, its like being cuddled everynight. Surpassed my expectations by far.

Like sleeping on a very supportivecloud

I hadnt realised how much differencea new bed would make to my rest andrelaxation.

The Serene is truly the mostcomfortable bed I have slept in. I wasunder the impression that a firm mattresswas best for your back, but always

preferred the feel of a softer mattress. This provides both, the snuggly top layerfor the comfort and the firmer lowerlayers for support.

The bed looks sleek and stylish, andhas given us the best nights sleep wevehad in a long time. Never again will Ioverlook the importance of a fantasticmattress.

A sumptuous cloud If you looked up comfortable in the

dictionary you would find a picture ofthe Serene mattress. It is soft yetwonderfully supportive. The foam layermoulds to the shape of your body but isnot too hot. It is just superb.

Over-dramatic as it sounds, this bedhas been literally life-changing. I can

honestly say I am getting the best sleepin years, which in turn is making my daysso much more productive. I will never tryto save money on a mattress again, theinvestment is worth every penny.

The Serene and Grace mattresses arepart of Slumberlands HarmonyCollection. Mammoth is supporting Paralympickayak hopeful Jonny Youngs hopes ofwinning Paralympic gold in Rio deJaneiro this summer.

The Northern Irishman is already aWorld Championship paracanoeing silvermedallist in the V1 200 metres. Due toregulation and rehabilitation changes, however, he now competes in the KL3200 metre kayak classification andharbours hopes of winning Paralympicgold in Rio this summer.

While skiing in December 2012 theformer outdoor activities instructorsustained an incomplete spinal cordinjury when he landed heavily and bursta vertebra. After being airlifted tohospital and spending 12 hours insurgery, he woke up to find himself onlycapable of flickers of movement from thewaist down.

After five months of intensiverehabilitation at the National SpinalInjuries Centre in Stoke Mandeville, hewas still wheelchair bound. As thebirthplace of the Paralympic movement,Stoke Mandeville uses sport as anintegral part of its rehabilitationprogramme. Unable to go back to workand with a house not suitable forwheelchair access, Young decided tochannel his efforts into somethingpositive by signing up for the British

    Paralympic Associations talent IDprogramme.

My thought was that if I could dosport as full time as possible I would beable to further my rehabilitation even ifI didnt find success. Off the back of that Iwas offered the chance to train with theBritish Canoeing Paracanoe Programmeand after three weeks training full time Imanaged to win a silver medal at theNational Regatta. It was this momentthat gave me a new direction in life. I haddiscovered a new environment toembrace my disability and strive forexcellence with it. It also offered me anincredible support network of like-minded people who were not preparedto let their disabilities stop them.

In just a couple of years, Jonnystraining improved him as an athlete butalso helped him to rehabilitate from afull-time wheelchair user to a full-timewalker.

Now a UK Sport Lottery funded athletehe spends three days training on thewater and three days in the gym eachweek to build the explosive power andstrength needed.

Training is tough for any elite athlete, but it is made harder for Jonny due tothe fusion in his back, which leaves himin almost constant pain and discomfort.

Rest and recovery has a massive

Medal motivationParalympic kayaker Jonny Youngsleeps on a Mammoth bed

impact on my training. I aim for aminimum of nine hours a night, but I alsolike to get 12 hours on my rest day. Evenduring a training day I spend a lot of timebetween sessions in bed to allow myback to be supported while resting even sitting in the most comfortable ofchairs cant offer the same support, heexplains.

The strength in my legs is limited and Istruggle to roll around, even though Iwant to due to the discomfort andpressure on my back. The temperatureregulation of my legs isnt quite righteither.

The Mammoth mattress supports myback, allowing me to get comfortable.Being in bed is now the only time mybody temperature regulates properly andit is actually the best pain remedy I use. Ialso find the mattress tension is justright, allowing me to move freely, whilebeing well supported. This also makes iteasier to climb in and out of bed.

My body is always fatigued. But I cantalways work out as effectively if my backhurts because of the injury. The bestfeeling for me is the period before a racewhen I taper down my training. You getmore rest than usual and feel all yourenergy gathering until you feel strongand powerful. Visit: www.mammothuk.com

    Cormar celebrates its silver anniversary

Cormar Carpets is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. In1956 Neville Cormack bought his first tufted carpet machineand decided to start manufacturing carpets in a 5,000sqft millin Rossendale Valley, Lancashire. Today, it is one of the largesttufted carpet manufacturers in the UK, with a turnover of105m and the sole survivor of pioneering UK tuftingcompanies from the 1950s. Cormack passed away in 2013 butthe company remains independently owned.

We have always had the determination to meet anychallenges head on and a commitment to continually investand improve, says David Cormack, Cormar marketing director. My father was inspirational and full of integrity and thatremains at the heart of everything we do here at Cormar. OurBritish Made philosophy has served the company well over theyears, contributing to a catalogue of award wins.

Based at two sites Holme Mill and Brookhouse Mill inBury, Lancashire, Cormar is an innovator with the launch of itsSensation range in 2012 heralding a new era for the industry.

We set the bar with Sensation when it came to soft-touchpolypropylenes, says David Judge, Cormar md. It had neverbeen done before and has since spawned a multitude of similarranges and created a style of carpet in its own right.

Over the years the company has expanded and improved, from tufting machines and delivery vehicles to more expresscollect centres and cross-docking stations. Holme Mill was alsoexpanded and its online trading portal introduced accountingfor 20% of Cormars business. It produces more than 10millionsqm of carpet a year.

We do not, and will not, rest on our laurels, says Judge. Weconstantly seek ways to improve our offering to retailers whether thats through quality, service or reliability and thiswill always be the backbone of Cormar Carpets. The Himalaya brand of 100% wool andwool-blend carpets from F&X Carpets isenjoying a growing fan base thanks to itsstyle and value. Add to this Aevitacarpets made from recycled plasticbottles and the Suretex polypropylenefamily, and it is clear that we are ready totake the market by storm, says GordonHugo, F&X UK sales manager.

While there is no doubt that our styles deliver the right blend of quality, value and performance features to makethem great sales propositions, it is F&Xslonger term thinking thats helping us tomake inroads in the UK market, saysHugo.

Carpets must offer the right featuressuch as bleach-cleanability and stain-resistance, such as Suretex he says, butthere is also much to be said for thinkingabout the longer-term and more thanjust ensuring a long wear warranty.

There are issues that can occur downthe line, which many manufacturers failto protect against, despite the promise ofa long life from their carpet, he says.

Attack from moths is a prime example, with cases on the up, even beingreported on websites includingMumsnet. With this problem in mind,

Himalaya wool carpets are mothproof, adding confidence and helping ensurethe carpet is safe against attacks that canlead to permanent damage.

Planning for the future also has widerimplications and there is a need to findalternative materials that replace plasticderived carpet fibres, or at least findnovel ways to reuse materials in thewaste stream, keeping them out oflandfill and extending useful life. F&XsAevita fibre is made entirely fromrecycled plastic bottles.

The high-grade plastic used in foodand drink packaging lends itself to beingrepurposed into high quality carpet fibre.Despite being made from recycledcontent, Aevitas Lyra and Ara styles haveno loss of performance offering stain-resistance, softness and durability thatwill make them a popular choice amongthose thinking seriously about theimpact of their choices.

Advances have also been made in theSuretex supersoft polypropylene styles.Hugo is keen to point out that it has onedistinct advantage over other collectionscurrently available. While great atfighting off spills, polypropylene isnt sogreat at fighting off the signs of UV

damage in areas exposed to high levelsof natural light. Colour fading and evenpremature degradation of the fibre canoccur with polypropylene carpets, sothats why all Suretex styles are UVprotected for life. Currently, we are one ofthe only manufacturers to make sure ourpolypropylene styles are protected fromthe sun.

Available on all four Suretex styles Capital, Casa, Meridian Deluxe andMeridian Supreme the UV protection isavailable to all customers regardless ofbudget, making it a performance featurethat helps to separate Suretex from thecompetition. Bleach-cleanability isretained and all styles feature a 10-yearstain resistant warranty.

While it is important that carpets meetthe need of todays homeowner by beingeasy to live with, there is no doubt thatwe will also need to tackle long-termissues not just with carpet itself, but alsofrom a wider perspective. We arecommitted to improving the long-termquality of our carpets, whether thatsthrough engineering-in protectivetreatments or finding innovative ways toreuse consumer waste, adds Hugo.Tel: 07976 607 657

Lanos X concept, a collection ofpremium carpets designed to provideconsumers with unique styles that bring a luxury edge to classic andcontemporary interiors, has achieved anotable milestone with 500 POS unitsnow in-store.

The X collection is going to redefineour perception of luxury carpet. UKhomeowners have long thought thatwool carpet rules the roost, but thatopinion is fading fast and X looks set toresign it to the history books forever. Ofcourse, thats not to say that wool doesnthave a place in the collection, but that itis joined by a range of other fibre typesthat now hold equal credence as trulyluxurious offerings, says Birger Karlsson,Lano UK and Ireland sales director.

With the first generation displaysexclusively featuring SmartStrand lines, they will be updated in September withthe introduction of the finest in Lanosnylon, bamboo and wool lines.

Enjoying exceptional softness andoffering longevity, these fibres arewithout doubt luxurious, but also offerunique looks and performance features. From the lifetime stain-resistance and

easy-clean nature of SmartStrand to thetherapeutic properties of bamboo andthe beautiful silk-like quality of nylon, theX collection presents choice, a majoradvantage against other luxury carpets. Thanks to our manufacturing flexibility, were able to deliver a fully-roundedluxury collection that brings together thevery best of fibre types available today ina single harmonious collection, he says.

Retailers can really benefit from thisslick approach, knowing that X containsan answer for any style need. With thefamiliar look of pure new wool that worksso well in traditional homes right throughto the ultra-contemporary look ofvelveteen nylons, and in shades from icywhite and sophisticated greys towarming naturals, this collection reallyspeaks for itself.

With a lifestyle look promoting qualityand desirability, the collection celebratessome of Lanos most enduring premiumofferings, as well as more recent releases.Among them are the wool style Oasis, thesoft and wellbeing focused Bamboo Luxe, the silken polyamide of Satine and theluxurious but practical SmartStrand BellaDonna and Gentle Bliss.

Naturally, wear warranties are some ofthe longest awarded by Lano so retailerscan be confident that these styles will notonly satisfy a thirst for the latest style butalso the demand for a lasting qualitycarpet in the home, says Karlsson.

Styles within the X collection can alsobe commissioned in bespoke-size arearugs, with two edge styles in Pure andElegance. With Pure, carpet edges areturned over and the rug is backed with anon-slip and moisture-resistant underlay. In Elegance, rugs are finished withnarrow colour-matched ribbon for abarely there look and a non-slip andmoisture-resistant underlay.

Were really excited about thepotential of this graceful collection ofpremium styles. Not only do they offerretailers and their customers a greatchoice, they also deliver an all-importantmix of enduring quality, contemporarycool and timeless elegance. While wemay not be able to predict the taste ofevery customer upon first glance, if theyare after a premium carpet then the Xcollection is sure to hold the key to theirheart, adds Karlsson.Visit: www.lano.com
