Cancer treatment, though effec-tive against the disease, is some-times hard on the body and the mind, leaving side effects that can often outlast the cancer it-self. Many survivors accept symp-toms like fatigue, difficulty with memory or concentration, muscle pain, swelling of the limbs, bal-ance problems, swallowing or speech issues, and learn to live with them. Going through cancer treatments is hard and the last-ing physical effects can make it that much worse. Most survivors do not receive the rehabilitation services that would help them to physically and emotionally heal as well as possible.

INTEGRIS has recognized a need to provide complete care for our patients, helping them recover to

their pre-diagnosis status in-stead of making do with a “new normal.” Through the STAR (Survivorship Training and Reha-bilitation) program, our goal is to minimize these effects and en-courage each patient to have the best quality of life possible. STAR is a nationally recognized certifi-cation that combines and coordi-nates the efforts of our specially trained physicians, advanced practical nurses, registered nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, dietitians and social workers to create care plans to address the individual needs of each patient.

We are the only medical facility in Oklahoma providing rehabilita-tion with the STAR certification, for patients who have had or have cancer.

All patients are eligible for par-ticipation in the program whether they are currently going through treatment or have already com-pleted treatment.

Ask your oncologist for a refer-ral or simply call INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation at 405-773-6601 with any questions!

Food for ThoughtNutrition is one of the most im-portant aspects of any cancer pa-tient’s treatment strategy. Finding out which foods are of the greatest value to you during your treatment and how to prepare them, what to eat when you don’t feel like eating or your tastebuds have changed, and reviewing options when there are chewing or swallowing difficul-ties, are just a few of the issues that two of our INTEGRIS Health dietitians can address with pa-tients and their caregivers.

Sheila Groves, M.S., RD, LD, and Pam Patty, RD, LD, CDE, are available free of charge to meet with patients and their caregivers to answer questions before, during and after treatment. Call 405-773-6606 to schedule a consulta-tion.

If The Weather Outside Is Frightful: Our Snow and Ice PolicyWorld-renowned social com-mentator Will Rogers once said “If you don’t like the weather in Oklahoma, wait a minute and it’ll change.” At no time is this truer than during one of our infamous winters.

We are committed to providing and maintaining a safe environ-ment for both you and our staff during these times.

The decision to close a campus is not a light one and it depends on many different factors. How-ever, should dangerous weather strike on a clinic day, we will make every effort to notify and reschedule patients beforehand. We also partner with the TV sta-tions to include ours among the lists of closed facilities through-out the potentially snow- or ice-covered city as quickly as

possible to alert patients and caregivers alike.

If you have a question regard-ing the weather and our working hours, please don’t hesitate to call us at 405-773-6400, or the INTEGRIS Southwest campus at 405-636-7000.
