"Student data drives instruction and
program decision!"
WNY RtI SymposiumMarch 2010
What is RTI?Response to Intervention (RTI) is a way of screening children, early in their schooling in order to help schools and educators identify those who may not be responding to instruction – and thus may be at risk for school failure. The technique allows schools to provide any student more intensive support–and monitor their progress—than may be typically available in every classroom. Ultimately, RTI is a LICENSE TO CHANGE SOMETHING!

Intervention Connection
As a response to intervention, EDU 311 Wpre-service teachers from Buffalo State College and mentoring teachers from Hyde Park Elementary School piloted a model that could be used to support struggling readers.
Child Study: Collaboration with Hyde ParkEach Hyde Park mentoring teacher pre-selected a child from their classroom that wouldbenefit from a targeted component of literacydevelopment. The mentoring teacher also decided what theintervention should specifically focus on.Ex) high frequency words Each 311W Pre-Service teacher met with theselected student every Monday and everyWednesday for 30 minute intervention sessions. The student and the pre-service teacher metfor 10 sessions.
How does the Child Study work?Student Interview:How does this child feel about reading? What did we learn that we could apply?
Pre Service Teachers Used:A bookA hands on intervention strategyA writing connection
Pre- Service Teachers Assessed:Used anecdotal records and formative assessment to evaluate student progress.

Intended Outcomes Pre-Service Teacher• Using formative assessments and intervention strategies,
pre-service teachers begin to understand and become familiar with how they can support a struggling reader.
Mentoring Teacher• Receives feedback from the pre-service teacher that
includes all assessments, and strategies used; also a summarized report on the progress that the child made during the 10 intervention sessions.
Student• Benefits from one-to-one support in a specific literacy
component that interfered with literacy acquisition.
