INTEGRATED FARMING OF PEARLSPOT (ETROPI,US SURATENSIS) WITH POULTRY

AT NARAKKAL RESEARCH CENTRE OF CIBA

Experimental integrated Csh-cumpoultry pond at Narakkal Research Centre.

Integrated farming o f fish with livestock and crops is known to be an eff icient means o f increasing fish production through maximum recycling o f wastes and a total savings on inorganic fertilizers and supplementary feeds. I n an effort to evolve a low-cost technology o f bmckishwatcr fiswprawn culture with minimum inputs. experiments were conducted i n raising f ish (Ehplus surorensis) with poultry at (he Namkkal Research Centre of Central Institute o f Brackishwater Aquaculture and the results are pmcntcd krc.

Two ponds. each 0.02 ha, were stocked with juveniles o f pearlspot @4 10.500 f ishh. Thc average si72 of fish at stocking was 79 mmIl0 g. I n one of the ponds, 4 wooden cages with tiled roof were installed. The cages were located near thc earthen bund for easy handling. I n each cage, 3 egg-laying birds (10 weeks old) o f "Astro White" variety, obtained from Kerala Agricultural University at Mannuthy. wen: housed. The birds were fed daily with a commercial feed mash The fish i n the control pond were fed with a fad containing pundnut oil cake, rice

A BI of 13211 eggs were obtained fmm : birds. which worked out to 1311 @irdr'year. This culture experiment ; clearly indicated the potential of cgrated farming for increas~ng fish 3 poultry production in brackish- tcr aquaculture.

The work was carried out by Dr. Krishnan. Senior Scientist of the titute.
