    Architectural Style

    Building 3: 1702 Main St

The architectural style of this building could be considered as Italianate. The Italianate style

buildings came was most popular between 1840 1885. They were also considered to be

Picturesque. The Italianate style began in England as a reaction to the rigid formalism thathad come to dominate nineteenth century architecture, "Italianate Style (1840-1885)."

    CONCEPT STATEMENT

Athletics will set the tone of the home that will accommodate Ms. Jenny Donahue and her autistic son

William. Autistic children are frequently overstimulated by lights, sounds, and some colors. With that

being said, the lighting in the home will be very soft and relaxed with the ability to be brightened whenneeded. Jenny is an avid runner that enjoys the running trail that is along the side of the river. The scene

of the river will be incorporated into the home by using cool colors such as soft blues and grays.

To honor Jennys medals, a display cabinet will be installed in the office. Along the wall will be possible

images her Jenny as she before she races, while she races, or after she races.

The main floors will be a light hardwood to brighten the room and make it appear large. The walls will

be neutral colors while the curtains, furniture, and dcor will be cool colors. The client will be able to

enter the home and be comfortable and relaxed without feeling overwhelmed.

    Color Palettes Continued

The two changes that I made to the selected image were the color of the sky (clouds) and the

temperature of the ground. With my client having an autistic child, I chose to work with cool colors

opposed to hot, vibrant colors that might excite the child. I changed the color of the clouds to be a

little cooler, which is why I added more of a blue tint. I very slightly changed the tone of the ground to

appear a tad bit cooler. On the before picture, the grass has a bit of an orange tint, I changed it to be a

little more of a yellow, making it a bit cooler. The sand was more of a white tone and I changed it be be

a little more than to make it more neutral. All of these elements put together will bring a refreshing,

calm, vibe to the home without making it too plain.

Existing building materials. Materials already in use in a building in compliance with requirements or approvals in effect at the timeof their erection or installation shall be permitted to remain in use unless determined by the code official to render the building or

structure unsafe or dangerous as defined in Chapter 2. New and replacement mat erials. Except as otherwise required or permitted

by this code, materials permitted by t he applicable code for new construc tion shall be used. Like materials shall be permitted for

repairs and alterations, provided no dangerous or unsafe condition, as defined in Chapter 2, is created. Hazardous materials, such

as asbestos and lead-based paint, shall not be used where the code for new construction would not permit their use in buildings of

similar occupancy, purpose and location. Glazing in hazardous locations. Replacement glazing in hazardous locations shall comply

with the safety glazing requirements of the International Building Code or International Residential Code as applicable. General.

Buildings and structures erected or to be erected, altered or extended in height or area shall be classified in one o f the five

construction types defined in Sect ions 602.2 through 602.5. The building elements shall have a fire-resistance rating not less than

that specified in Table 601 and exterior walls shall have a fire-resistance rating not less than that specified in Table 602. Where

required to have a fire-resistance rating by Table 601, building elements shall comply with the applicable provisions of Section

703.2. The protection of openings, ducts and air transfer openings in building elements shall not be required unless required by

other provisions of this code. T his building will conform to the International Residential Building Code because the following

requirements: The ceiling heights on all 3 floors c onsist of more than 7ft. 6in. The exterior and interior walls are fire-resistant not

less than specified. Once the home has been constructed using the specified fire-resistant rated materials, this will provide a safe

and sound home. I think energy efficientcy is very important can be incorporated into the consturction thorugh proper seals on

doors and windows. The use of fire-rated protected carpet padding and the use of energy efficient lighting.

Materials already in use in a building in compliance with requirements or approvals in effect at the time of their erection orinstallation shall be permitted to remain in use unless det ermined by the building official to be unsafe per Section 115.

Except as otherwise required or permitted by this code, materials permitted by the applicable code for new construction shall be

used. Like materials shall be permitted for repairs and alterations, provided no hazard to life, health or property is created.

Hazardous materials shall not be used where the code for new construction would not permit their use in buildings of similar

    occupancy, purpose and location.

Replacement of electrical receptacles shall comply with the applicable requirements of Section 406.3(D) of NFPA 70.

Plug fuses of the Edison-base type shall be used for replacements only where there is no evidence of over fusing or tampering

"Level 1 alterations to existing buildings or struc tures are permitted without requiring the entire building or structure to comply

with the energy requirements of the International E nergy Conservation Code or International Residential Code. The alterations

shall conform to the energy requirements of the International Energy Conservation Code or International Residential Code as they

relate to new construction only." (InternationalBuilding Code)

For replacement of nongrounding-type receptacles with grounding-type receptacles and for branch circuits that do not have

an equipment grounding conductor in the branch circuitry, the grounding conductor of a grounding-type receptacle outlet

shall be permitted to be grounded to any accessible point on the grounding electrode system or to any accessible point on

the grounding electrode conductor in accordance with Section 250.130(C) of NFPA 70.

Grounding of appliances. Frames of electric ranges, wall-mounted ovens, counter-mounted cooking units, clothes dryers

and outlet or junction boxes that are part of the existing branch circuit for these appliances shall be permitted to be

grounded to the grounded circuit conductor in accordance with Section 250.140 of NFPA 70. In the kitchen and eating

areas, every counter space wider than 12 must have a GFI protected plug. The existing building should be expected to

conform to the code for an abundance of safety reasons. In the kitchen and eating area, there are usually a lot of small

appliances that need electricity to o perate, therefore you need multiple plugs to ac commodate several handheld

appliances. The GFI plug is designed to automatically switch o ff if there is too much power or if there is a risk of a possible

power surge or electrical issue. This is very important considering the individual in the kitchen using a small handheld

appliance could be working on a counter space next to the sink and the appliance can accidentally fall into the sink

unknowingly. The GFI plug will automatically stop all electricity from going to t hat unit, stopping a possible fire. This brings

me back to why so many GFI plugs should be installed. The user would no t have to worry about working in or near unsafe

conditions if they have multiple options.

"Level 2 alterations to existing buildings or struct ures are permitted without requiring the entire building or structure to comply

with the energy requirements of the International E nergy Conservation Code or International Residential Code. The alterations

shall conform to the energy requirements of the International Energy Conservation Code or International Residential Code as

with the energy requirements of the International Energy Conservation Code or International Residential Code. The alterations

shall conform to the energy requirements of the International Energy Conservation Code or Internat ional Residential Code as

Discuss how important codes are in residential design. Explain howknowing this information will specifically advance your futureapplication of code factors while designing. Provide at least twoexamples. ~~~Vanessa Lowe

Codes for Residential Design are of the utmost important for several reasons butmainly they are there and put in place for our safety to prevent things from happeningsuch as trip hazards and help with things like fire safety, electrical safety, energyconservation, as well as means of egress in case of a fire or emergency. Also it is

important to know codes for building construction whether new or old construction aswell as helping with being ADA Compliant for people with disabilities. Knowing thisinformation will help in the future by learning about the codes and making sure whiledesigning spaces that everything is up to code and being done correctly. This will helpto make homes and residential spaces safe or everyone. One example of a code not beingimplemented was a new construction build and the land around the house is supposedto raise a little at a downward direction so the water flows away from the house andfoundation but instead the water filled up their window and flooded their basement.Another example would be if you had to many outlets on one breaker or to much powergoing to one breaker it would overheat and possibly cause a fire that is why there aresupposed to be a certain amount of outlets allowed to be on one breaker and usually abig appliance like fridge or furnace should be on its own breaker.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using sprinklers inresidential applications. Identify if sprinkler systems are required in newresidential construction in your locality. Explain if you feel they shouldbe required in all renovations of existing residential buildings.~~~Charvida King

Using sprinkler systems in residential applications could have advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of having them is, if you live in a loft home that have high ceilings, the sprinklers canassist in keeping the fire from spreading very quickly. Heat rises, and so does fire flames, with high

ceilings it may take a little longer for the fire and heat to rise to the ceiling. With having sprinklersystems installed, the fire will be condensed to the floor level of the home, sparing any roof damage orsecond level damage. However, having a sprinkler system installed could cause damage to importantitems in the home such as antiques, valuables, and furniture. The solutions used in sprinkler systemsare usually harmful to fabric materials, so once the systems are deployed, then your items are prettymuch ruined beyond repair. On that same token, if the fire is not under control, then you will havewater damage from the powerful hoses that the fire department uses. Youre more likely to have lessdamaged materials when using sprinkler systems. In the state if Illinois, sprinkler systems are notrequired in new residential construction, but this is a proposition being made. I feel that sprinklersystems should be required in townhomes, multi floor homes, condos and apartment buildings, andlofts. I say this because the sprinkler systems keep fires from spreading. They confine the fire to be inone area. If the fire should start on the lower level of the home, then the sprinkler systems will reducepossible damage to the upper levels of the home or building. If the fire were to start on the upper levelof the home, and the lower level sprinkler systems deploy, and the fire makes its way downstairs, ifanything does catch fire, it will be very moderate because the solution is already in place to reduce

flames. Its harder to stop a fire in a ranch home versus a multi story home or building.

Select a topic from Part I and discuss three reasons why you feel the topicdemands code compliance in residential design. Explain what could happen ifcode compliance is not met for this topic. ~~~Yocheved Leshinsky

    Electrical

When it comes to the electrical aspect of a building it very important to keep the codecompliance. If electrical parts of design are not properly within safety measures it can

result in fire dangers and disasters. It is for our own safety that we keep to the lawssuch as, in bathrooms one cannot have receptacles in certain areas to close to water. In a room there must be receptacles every 12 feet which prevents unnecessarytangling wires throughout a room. Keeping to code laws for electrical areas is veryimportant for the safety of our lives. It provides safe wiring and equipment. Anotherimportant reason to meet the code compliance in this topic is to conserve energy. When keeping to code compliance in residential design one will not be wasting energyunnecessarily. Additionally, when keeping to the electrical laws it will actually helpwith furniture placement. The code compliance is set in a way that will be convenient. If one will not listen to where receptacles have to be placed and does not put them asfrequent they might run into problems with placing whatever furniture they wantedto that needs an outlet. The code compliance is there as a guide for us and asdesigners it is very important to follow.

Identify the code organization followed in your locality for residentialbuildings. Select a topic from Part I and compare the factors of theresearched codes to the codes for new construction in your own locality.Discuss the reasons for any similarities or differences. ~~~Gwen Noel

The Illinois Development Board, located in Springfield, Il is an excellent source forresidential building codes (www.illinois.gov). You are able to identify which county ormunicipality for which codes may apply. There are sections for new construction, rentalproperties and updating properties. The building elements and materials code in Illinois isin the 2009 International Building Codes. There are particular areas to explainaccessibility and energy efficiency (www.cmdgroup.com).

The international Building code for Illinois (815 ILCS 670/10) is to ensure the safety andwelfare of the public. Using the following codes helps protect homeowners and financialinstitutions against problematic property to ensure safe construction. Both theInternational Building Code and State codes are similar by construction procedures andmaterials to use.

They both have to maintain and apply the life-safety and welfare of the public. Thedifference between the 2 codes are that with state codes, it appears more permits and toabide by ordinances for the city/state are needed as opposed to the international buildingcodes. You would still be required to provide proper building permits, such as the basics, plumbing, electrical and any demolition.

    JUSTIFICATION

How did you develop your concept for the project? What were your design goals, and how

were they achieved? How does your design reflect the culture and diversity of the client whowill occupy the space?

To develop my design concept, I did some investigation on my client and her family. I studied

her design style and identified her needs and wants. While designing my clients home, my goal

was to bring comfort and functionality to the space being designed. I achieved this goal byresearching furniture to meet her style preference, fabrics that were suitable for the area, and

arrangements that would promote comfort. My client, Miss Jenny Donahue, is an avid runner

who enjoys running next to the lake. I tried to incorporate earth tones into the furniture and

finishes to bring outdoors, in. This worked out well considering her style type is Art Nouveau, which has some earthy details included in most designs. A lot of the designs include vines and

other pants to compliment the furniture finish and style.

While working on Miss Donahues home, I was required to create many schematic plans thatcould possibly be used as a final design for the home. When you begin designing, you begin with

a vision, nothing on paper, everything in your mind. You look at the space and can vision what

can go where, but you dont take into consideration actual measurements of furniture, actual

finish of floor, etc. Working on schematic plans has helped me to make my vision become areality. I was able to create different scenarios with furniture arrangements as well as create

    different scenarios with room placement.

    REFLECTION

Throughout the six weeks that I have spent in this class, I have learned a lot about the residentialdesign process, as well as learned a lot about myself as a designer. I learned that every detail

counts when designing a home or room. You have to focus on room size, room placement,

furniture type, fabric types, lighting, flooring, wall coverings, and the list goes on. What Ilearned about myself is, as a designer, I need to work on space planning a lot more. Space is, in

my opinion, the most important part of the design process. As designers, our responsibility is to

make space as functional as possible without making it uncomfortable. Our client expects for us
