    Architectural Style

This building is from the second empire style that was popularized during the reign

of Napoleon III between the mid-1850s and the mid-1880s. The main characteristic

that stands out is the mansard roof. Other traits that apply are the strictly

symmetrical form, cornices at the top and base of the roof, and patterned shingles.

The second empire style originated in France. Well-attended exhibitions in Paris in

1855 and 1867 helped to spread this style to England and then the United States. It

was used extensively in the northeastern and Midwestern parts of the U.S. during the

1860s and 1870s. This style can be found in almost every Pennsylvania town, usuallyin the form of single residences, duplexes or rowhouses. (Late)

    Justification Of The Solution

The main inspiration for the design of the home was the Hepplewhite

furniture that the clients currently own. The goal was to blend the antique

furniture in with the newer pieces and to make the space look classic and

timeless. The colors are a new take on traditional colors and help in

keeping the look fresh and current. A lot of neutrals were used to balanceout the other more vibrant shades. Various whites were used to make the

accent colors stand out and to add visual interest. The flooring on the

first floor is a rich hardwood in a lighter tone than that of the furniture to

provide some contrast. The carpeting in the master bedroom is also a

neutral as the space has a more vivid color scheme and lots of pattern.

The accessories were chosen to have curvilinear lines as the furniture

pieces are mostly rectangular in form. This creates a unified look and

adds a lot of character and texture to the space. In all, the design reflectsthe style and personalities of the client and incorporates their beloved

    heirlooms into the space seamlessly.
