Vacant - School Improvement Math Specialist November 2015

“Assist district administrators from component school districts to provide School Improvement program and technical support with a concentration in Mathematics.”

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS/UPDATES:

The School Improvement Math Specialist position is currently vacant. The first round of interviews for this position, held in early July, did not yield a favorable candidate pool. The position has been reposted and applications have been reviewed. We are looking for strong math content and pedagogical expertise at the secondary level. An internal interview team interviewed one candidate on October 6th. While we had others we were interested in interviewing, they were no longer interested in the position. While it was not our hope to bring only one candidate to the Districts for consideration, we are inviting component district representatives (secondary principals and math teachers) to conduct a second interview with the one candidate that interviewed with us internally. In the meantime, Janine Brutvan continues to serve as a math consultant and provides needed professional development and support to component district elementary math teachers.

Lynn Miller, School Library System Director November 2015

Our mission is to be instructional partners in preparing life-long learners for the 21st century.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS/UPDATES:

The NYS library systems negotiated a great price for schools to have access to the SCOLA web service, which is information, television, newspapers

and radio from countries around the world. It includes hearing and reading 175 languages with different dialects which makes it an excellent

resource for our foreign language, ELL and social studies teachers. I was able to purchase a license for each high and middle school for the year. The

foreign language teachers’ response to this video and audio resource has been overwhelming.

I attended two meetings of district administrators as well as three of the Social Studies Inquiry Writing session and were able to demonstrate to 27

individuals the new Rosen eBooks purchased this summer for classroom use. I also shared the new eBook collection on OverDrive that includes

titles that supplement the ELA modules for students with reading difficulties. The response from our county in using OverDrive this month has been

tremendous; there were a total of 1,230 eBooks checked out just during October. Our last peak month was January 2015 with 499.

As a cooperative regional library systems event, we held our Fall Into Books Literacy Conference in Fishkill. Our speakers were Jennifer Hubert

Swan and Brian Floca. Each participant had to read 6-8 books based on various themes and come prepared to discuss them with their groups.

Polly Farrington is instructing an online course entitled “Cool Tools for Schools” she has 3 different levels or tracks based upon experience that she

will be teaching from now to June. Educators can still sign up for this educational opportunity to learn hands-on about blogging, podcasting,

curating resources and dozens of other topics.

Jennifer Williams, Teacher Center November 2015

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS/UPDATES:

This past month the Teacher Center had its first Policy Board Meeting. It was a well-attended meeting with almost all schools represented. The focus of

this meeting was to encourage members to work with their districts to develop professional development programs. Programs that are developed with

teacher input are more likely to meet the needs of both students and teachers. During this meeting, members received document cameras to take back to

their districts. Document cameras can be used to display and record information which can be used to enhance instruction.

On October 15th, the program “A Day in Clay” was offered to art teachers in Sullivan County. This workshop was developed at the suggestion of art teachers

through the collaboration with the Teacher Center and Arts in Education. The workshop was held in the art studio of Ayla Maloney. Teachers learned new

techniques for glazing and firing. They also discussed the history of clay and how to link this information to Common Core lessons. The program was well

received.

On October 22nd, art teachers met for a program entitled, “Countywide Art Assessment Training/NYSATA Portfolio Project”. This workshop was also

developed at the suggestion of art teachers through collaboration with the Teacher Center and Arts in Education. The art teachers arranged for a person

from their professional organization, NYSATA, to train them on how to assess art portfolios. It is the goal of the group to develop art portfolios with

students and then have the portfolios judged in a similar format to music students who perform music selections for judges. Follow-up meetings will be

scheduled to support this initiative.

Trainings/Conferences Attended:

10/9 and 10/10- Attended Turn-Key training sponsored by the Education and Leaning Trust. The training I attended was “Instructional Supports for

English Language Learners (ELLs). The workshop I can now present is geared for general education teachers to help them design effective content-area

instruction while they explore research-based strategies, instructional guidelines and resources for helping ELLs succeed.
