Architivity Liberty Memorial is a cooperative effort of the Kansas City AIA and theArchiNet organization, teachers and architects working together to create understandingof the built environment. Future landmark curriculum guides are planned.

INTRODUCTION

The American institute of Architects,locally and nationally, is active insupporting environmental education effortsin the schools. Graduate courses for credit,tours, and in-school experiences are just afew of the areas in which architects andteachers are collaborating to make environ-mental education a part of each student'severyday life.

Teachers are responding to this effortwith their own programming. A group ofteachers is networking to promote environ-mental education. Archi-Net began inKansas City as a direct result of the AIAprograms. It is these teachers whosponsored the idea of concentrating on aparticular city landmark, Liberty Memorial,as a focus for more in-depth field tripplanning. The University of MissouriKansas City joined in this Iffort and offereda class specifically designed to featurethis monument.

Members of the class and members of theArchi-Net organization processed classinformation and then compiled theirfindings into this interdisciplinary field tripguide, Architivity: Liberty Memorial,with emphasis on the sometimes over-looked environmental and architecturalfeatures of the Memorial. It is hopedthat this basic model, which providesenrichment for social studies, writing,mathematics, music, and art, will reachevery type of leamer and reach into everycurriculum area. Its format can serve as aprototype-for-guides-to-landmarks, not justin Kansas City, but elsewhere.

Dissemination of the materials will occuron several levels. For educators.Architivity: Liberty Memorial will be

available at the Memorial office, in areaschool resource centers, and through theAIA office for reference and duplicating. ALiberty Resource Box with additionalprojects and information will also behoused at the Memorial. In order to callpublic attention to the importance of thislandmark, Archi-Net, in collaboration withthe AIA, planned a community-basedactivity at Spirit Festival, the Fourth of Julycelebration held on the grounds of theMemorial. You will see Spirit programpages incorporated into the field trip guide.On the next page you will read more aboutthe Archi-Net/AIA team at Spirit Festival.We hope you enjoy and use our first fieldtrip guide, Architivity: LibertyMemorial.

Activities for Children

A Message To Parents ...What is the 4th of July to a five year old? When I

was a five year old in Kansas City, the 4th of Julymeant spending a full day at a sw:mming pool and eat-ing grilled hot dogs for dinner. Once darkness began tofall, it meant piling into the station wagon with sistersand brothers and cousins and neighbors, driving to aspecial parking lot, sitting on the roof of the car (aonce-a-year-only treat) and watching distant fire-works. It was our country's birthday.

It's wonderful piece of childhood.So what is the 4th of July in the eyes of today's five

year olds? What is Spirit? We hope that it is somethingvery special, for the Spirit Festival is a Festival forfamilies. That has been a fundamental principle sincethe notion of the festival was conjured up more thanthree and a half years ago.

And this program is for families. On the followingpages, you will see a variety of activities for familiesnot children families. Thanks to the help of a groupof local teachers called Archi-Net, we've provided anumber of exercises, games, projects and ideas that,along with your interaction, will stretch the minds ofyour children.

While you're working together on the activities, weencourage ycu to come to the Architivity booth in thechildren's area on the festival grounds. There you'llfind the Archi-Net teachers who designed this sectionas well as local architects who are ready to help yourchildren make their own creations with the 20,000Lego blocks on hand. There are also large sheets ofpaper (big enough for even the most active imagina-tion) and Crayola Markers for special idea sessionswith the teachers. We've also prepared a series of 4hints that will help you with some of the mindbendersin the quizzes and puzzles. There is a Contest on thenext page; rules and more information are available atthe booth.

Thanks to Archi-Net and The American Institute -rof Architects we're able to help you snape the notionof Spirit in the minds of your children. We also hopethat we you as parents, we as friends are con-tributing to some pretty wonderful childhoodmemories for the next generation of adults.

This field trip guide consists of 24Resource Pockets, each side capable ofenclosing not just one page, but abrochure or multiple pages. We hope youwill like the flexibility of this format.Permission has been received from allcontributors to make copies for educationalpurposes. Some pages will be appropriatefor your particular subject matter or gradelevel and others will not. Please take alook at all of the activities with the idea ofadapting to your needs those which are tooeasy or too difficult. Built environmenteducation fits into all curriculum areas:history, science, geography, math,reading, writing, art and music. You willprobably want to create a personalizedguide especially for your own files.

The Liberty Resource Box housed at theLiberty Memorial Museum containsadditional materials for your use: some areproject ideas which teachers have alreadyworked out for their classrooms. Othersare lists or scripts which are too extensiveto be contained in this book. On the nextpage you will see a list of some of the hemscontained in the Resource Box. Pleaseask the Museum attendant for access tothis material.

Feel free to use the American Institute ofArchitects and the Archi-Net organizationas community resources. cPrepare a landmark map for students to use on the bus when visiting Liberty Memorial orany Kansas City site. Lay a piece of tracing paper over the Kansas City pictorialpresentation included in the Resource Pocket of this page and draw your own route.(Unfortunately, we were unable to locate and give credit to the artist who drew this helpfulmap.) Simplify the map for your students by designating only major landmarks betweenyour school and the field trip site (Liberty Memorial). Pre-classroom instruction mightinclude familiarization with the landmarks which will be passed Jong the bus route.

School buses are noisy. Use this map as well as commentary on the bus to providestudents an extra bonus from the field trip: exposure not just to the field trip sites, but to thetotal built environment of Kansas City. Hoover Brothers Audio Visual 913-649-8088(Kansas), or 816-221-7663 (Missouri) rents a portable microphone called a Tour Guide.It is light weight and can also be carried for your tour of the Liberty Memorial environment.Your school district may also have such equipment available. Bus companies normallywill take the most expeditious, and least visually interesting trafficway unless you, theeducator, request a more culturally -ris± driving route.

Background:THE LIBERTY MEMORIAL

LIBERTY MEMORIAL COMPLEXThe Liberty Memorial was built as amonument to the men and women whoserved in the First World War. This warlasted from 1914-1918. As soon as thewar ended, Kansas Citians began to plan amemorial. One out of every four people inKansas City donated money to help buildthe Memorial.

THE DESIGN COMPETITIONThe Committee of 100, made up ofinfluential Kansas City leaders, voted onthe form of the Memorial. They consideredmany things, even a stadium, but voted fora museum. Before people knew what thememorial would look like, they knew whereit would be. At that time, the train stationwas the center of activity for Kansas City.There was a wooded hill to the southoverlooking the impressive new UnionStation. This land was purchased and well-known architects were invited to enter acontest to see who would design thememorial. The American Institute ofArchitects agreed to review the drawings.The winner was H. Van Buren Magonigle,a New York architect. The Memorial wasbuilt at an actual cost of $2,082,000. TheCommittee of 100 became the LibertyMemorial Association. Today, thisorganization is responsible for themanagement of the Memorial.

THE DESIGNThe design of the Memorial Shaft and sidebuildings is strongly mechanical, exhibitingall of the characteristics of technology.Nonessentials were stripped away. Itexpressed the new taste and architecturalexpression of the future. Its plan and

details are rooted in the classic past. Itsconcept and form precede thefunctionalism that was to come.

DEDICATIONSThe site of the Memorial was dedicatedduring the American Legion Convention onNovember 1, 1921. At the ceremony, thefive great military leaders of the UnitedStates, Great Britain, France, Italy andBelgium met together for the first time.Their pictures can be seen in Memory Hall.

The Liberty Memorial was completed in1926 and dedicated on November 11 ofthat year. (November 11 was the date in1918 when the "cease fire" or Armisticewent into effect. Now that date is calledVeterans Day.) President Calvin Coolidgetraveled by train from Washington, D.C., tospeak. 150,000 people came to hear himand to see the dedication.

THE COMPLEXThe Liberty Memorial complex is made upof these elements: the Memorial Shaft; theWorld War I Museum on the west; MemoryHall on the east; the two Sphinxes and theGreat Frieze.

The 217 foot stone tower is the centralelement of the Memonal. The form of theshaft evolved from the necessity for strongshadows which woula make it visible atgreat distances. The purpose of the shaftis to carry on high the censer in whichbums the Flame of Inspiration. In actuality,there is no fire, but only a flame effect. It iscreated by a combination of white, orangeand red Gghtbulbs and steam fromopenings in an eight foot circular pipewhich is connected to the heating system.

In the original plans, H. Van BurenMagonigle called for "steam, electricallycolored." The Flame of Inspiration was to"bum forever upon an altar high, erected inthe skies, a pillar of cloud by day, a pillar offire by night, to lead men out of thebondage of strife into the promised land ofPeace."

The tower is surrounded at the top by fourforty foot high Guardian Spirits of the flame.Honor is wearing a laurel wreath;Courage, a helmet; Patriotism, a civiccrown and Sacrifice has a winged star onher forehead. The %;ing motif can be seenthroughout the Memorial. Not only are theGuardian spirits winged, but eagles in thedecorative devices at the end of thebuildings are winged. All walls incline 1"for every 8 feet in height.

Horse power and steam engines wereused to cut a shelf into the hill to reachbedrock for the memorial to stand on. Thiswas one of the first structures of its size inKansas City to use this technique. There isenough space underneath the memorial toput ten museums. That space will be usedfor museum expansion in the future.

THE SPHINXESTwo colossal sphinx figures guard theentrance to the Memorial. They symbolizeMemory and Future. Memory faces easttoward World War I battlefields. Her face isshrouded to forget the horror of war.Future faces west. Her face is alsocovered to indicate that she cannot seewhat events may lie ahead. The Sphinxeslie at the foot of the altar (tower). TheEgyptian sphinx exhibits the head of aman, the body, legs, feet and tail of a lion.Greek sphinxes are traditionally sculptedwith the head of a woman. The Memorialsphinxes, although their faces are unseen,are considered to be Greek in origin.

THE FRIEZEThe frieze, carved on the wall of the northterrace, is by Edmond Amateis. It wascompleted in 1935 and depicts theprogress of civilization from war to peace.More information about the frieze iscontained in the pamphlet entitled, "TheStory of the Great Frieze."

MEMORY HALLThe famous French painting, Pantheon dela Guerre, the "biggest painting in theworld," was reinterpreted through a cut-and-splice method by artist Daniel MacMorris,who painted many of the other murals inthis room.

The Memorial Shaft; the Sphinxes; and oneach side, the two limestone buildings: theMuseum and Memory Hall; form asymmetrically balanced composition.Architecturally, they are reminiscent ofsmall temples.

THE CURATORThe Liberty Memorial is managed by acurator. A curator is a professional who issuperintendent of something or or who is incharge of something. He not onlymanages the objects in the museum, but isresponsible for interpreting or telling theirstory to the community. The exhibits in themuseum remained largely unchanged from1926 until 1976 when the curator, Mr. MarkBeveridge, began to develop the museumas an educational museum. The Museumreceives private funds and city funds. It isthe only museum in the countryspecializing in World War I.

A single act, the shooting of ArchdukeFrancis Ferdinand, heir to the throne ofAustria-Hungary, marked the outbreakof World War I. Austria-Hungary thendeclared war on Serbia, July 28, 1914.The United States tried to remain neutral,but in 1917, also entered the war on theside of the Allies (Belgium, France, GreatBritain, Russia and Serbia.) The CentralPower countries were Austria-Hungary,Germany and the Ottoman Empire.

World War I changed history: it alteredthe balance of power forever; it gavewomen the opportunity to show that theycould do anything men could do; it gaveBlacks an opportunity to demonstrate theircapabilities and it brought about changesin technology by fostering scientific studies.Poison gas, submarines and aircraft wereall developed as a result of World War I.

KANSAS CITY'S ROLE

This war was truly a world war. It involvedmany countries. People from every partof the United States fought in the war.To commemorate the end of this war, cityleaders wanted to erect a monument,not only to acknowledge the sacrifices,but to signal the advent of peace.

This would be the war to end all wars.The city council called a mass meetingof citizens one week after the wars end.School children participated. They issuedinvitations to their parents to attend themeetings.

Fundraising involved every citizen.Kansas Citians who were children atthe time remember carrying theircontributions, usually dimes, to school inpaper cups. Within ten days, the sum oftwo and one third million dollars wasraised to erect a war memorial.

rDISCUSSION TECHNIQUE

How do you create interest in or evendiscuss a landmark which memorializesa war which students do not rememberand is perhaps a site they have nevervisited? One approach is to show visualsor slides of the Memorial and to use aquestioning approach to generate interest.Two methods are possible.

In the first method, the instructor looksat the visuals and generates all of thequestions which come to mind. This canbe done randomly and the questionsregrouped into clusters or topic areas afterthe initial brainstorming. These questionsbecome the basis for a discussion of theMemorial.

In the second or "discovery method," andespecially if students may not have visitedor be familiar with the Memorial, use slidesor visuals to generate the questions fromthe students. This method insures thatdiscussion relates to students' owninterests. Hang flip chart paper aroundthe room and have one or two studentsact as recorder. Encourage students tospontaneously generate questions whileviewing slides. This method works mosteffectively if normal brainstormingtechniques are utilized--no critiquing ,

no need to raise hands, no question istoo silly. Evaluation occurs later.Categories may be provided by theteacher if it seems a needed directivefor the student. The classifications couldinclude mathematics, people, mechanical,design, architectural, and affect questions.Again, regroup the questions into dustetsafter the initial session. A sampling ofquestions follows: What is this building?Is it a building? Who built it? What's in it?

Who takes care of the building? Whatmachinery operates the Memorial? Howwas it built? What materials were used?What geometric shapes can you see?How much area does the complexcontain? How would you calculate thisarea? Where is the front? How do youknow? Is Liberty Memorial barrier-free?

This technique was used to produceinstructions for the Scavenger Huntwhich follows this page. Duplicate it foreach student to use at the Memorial site.Following a field trip to the Memorial or thestudy of the Memorial, it will be interestingto reintroduce this list to see how many ofthe questions have been answered. ART: CUT AND PASTE (22)Following a slide show or field trip to theLiberty Memorial, design a monument orcreate a unique representation of LibertyMemorial. It is more important for thestudents to depict the "feeling" or "idea"of monument rather than an actualrepresentation of Liberty Memorial. ArtistMike Savage uses colored constructionpaper which is cut, arranged and glued topresent a stylized and simplified version ofLiberty Memorial. Notice the color palettewhich is non-representational and limitedto six colors.

WRITING AND ART: POSTERC23)

Posters were probably the widest andmost powerful form of communicationduring World War I because they could beseen. The radio, the other popularcommunications tool, could only be heard.Poster art appealed to the emotions, notonly through effective graphics, but alsothrough strong language. After classroomdiscussions about images and symbolism,students can generate writings about theimpact, message, and audience targetedby WWI posters. Display the Women in Warbrochure at a learning center. Studentscan choose one poster from it to analyze.Instruction: "Write a paragraph telling whatspecific message a particular posterconveys." Sugar Means Ships, posterno. 4, and poster no. 24, Victory Girls,are especially interesting.

VISUAL DISCRIMINATION:SKYLINE (24,25)

The photo composite of the skyline isuseful for putting together more images

than can normally be contained in onephotograph. Matching the shape of abuilding to the photo image is an exampleof a lower level thinking skill(knowledge). The ability to look at theactual city skyline and point out specificbuildings without the Skyline LearningTool is an example of a higher levelthinking skill (comprehension). Otherlevels of Bloom's taxonomy can also beapplied. See Extending StudentThinking (page 40).

THE GREAT FRIEZE (26)

The Frieze itself comprises a study ofattitudes, technology, the past and thefuture. The book enclosed in ResourcePocket 26, "The Story of the Great Frieze,"can be utilized for informationalbackground on many aspects of theMemorial, and as a tool for developingwritting, poetry, art, math, and geographyprojects concerning the Memorial. WRITING: WAR NEWS (27)Using the front page of the "Kansas CityStar." April 6, 1917 as a reference, havestudents write and illustrate a newspaperabout World War I. The Liberty Memorial brochure (page 10)lends itself as a resource for many simpleand higher level math problems. Theseproblems are based on information in thispamphlet as well as information in TheGreat Frieze brochure (page 26). Noticethat this activity provides aninterdisciplinary linking of math andall other curriculum areas. Using thismodel as a guide, generate math problemsof your own focused on a particular subjectmatter or grade level.

COMPUTER GRAPHICS POThis is a culminating or enrichment project.Students will use home or schoolcomputers to do a rendering of theMonument using as many details aspossible. Students will gain experienceusing the Koala pad, joystick, or keyboardto produce a purposeful assignment inmaking an architectural elevation. Thetime spent analyzing photos and otherdocuments will help the students becometotally familiar with the aesthetic andconstruction details of the Memorial.

The Liberty Memorial model could be usedas a culminating activity arid reward forcompleting the Learn and Win quiz. Itmight also be used as a readiness activityand a way to acquaint students with thevarious elements of the Memorial. ft is alsoan exercise in spatial relationships andfollowing directions. Reproduce bothpages for use in puttingtogether the model.

Reproduce the Liberty Memorial Boarddesign and paste to a sturdy piece ofcardboard which can serve as the gameboard. Copy the question cards on lightweight posterboard for class use. BothGame Board and questions are enclosedin the Resource Pockets (page 36 and 37).

By the 1890's, Kansas City was old enoughand rich enough to start thinking aboutamenities: landscaped lawns, public parksand drives, tree-lined streets and plannedgrowth: in other words, City Planning. In1893, George Kessler, a student ofFrederick Law Olmsted, an internationallyknown landscape architect, made anassessment of Kansas City in his first parkboard report. This report is considered tobe the beginning of the City BeautifulMovement.

The newspapers had been agitating since1870 for a beautiful city. The developmentof Union Station focused interest on aspecific site. The creation of a civic centeraround Kansas City's "doorway to theworld" would insure that visitors would stepoff the train and see Kansas City's best.

Jarvis Hunt, architect of the Union Station,put forth a plan which projected that visitorswould not see clay bluffs, but a prestigiousdomed city hall, post office, a library, artmuseum, county building, a hall of recordsand an armory.

Civic leaders could never agree and Hunt'splan was never completed. However, theexperience which R.A. Long and WilliamRocklin! Nelson acquired in studying theproblem was put to good use in theirsuccessful movement for a huge WorldWar I Memorial on the same site, the bluffsin front of Union Station.

Businessmen were convinced that civicbeauty was an index to civic activity andgrowth.

Here are some things to think about.How would our city be better/worse if thisplan had been fulfilled? What are theadvantages and disadvantges of groupingcivic and cultural functions in one area?How could you go about creating a CivicCentertoday? What problems would youencounter? ARCHI-NETMEMBERSHIP FORM _.ARCHI-NET: An interested group of teachers from the Greater Metropolitan Areacommitted to increasing environmental, historical, and cultural awareness of Kansas City.We are making this a cooperative effort with the American Institute of Architects.

ABOUT THE ARCHI-NET ORGANIZATION: We are focusing our energies on thedevelopment of relevant instructional materials and activities which highlight Kansas Citylandmarks. These materials will be made available to community teachers especiallyand/or students at the landmark site. Some materials would be on loan while othermaterials would have a minimal cost.

We are asking for your $15 contribution to help us with our environmentaleducation efforts. Some of our activities include Spirit Festival Architivitybooth for families; advisory committee for graduate courses; school in-service; built environment curriculum packets and materials for check out tomembers.

With your Dues Contribution you will have the opportunity to pioneer built environmenteducation efforts with others nationally and in the metropolitan area; receive informationabout top-notch programs and classes through our publication archiNews; andbecause of our cooperation with other organizations involved with architecture and thebuilt environment, be put on speaker and city tour mailing lists. The American institute of Architects. and Archi-Net, teachers networking forenvironmental awareness, announce the publication of Architivity:Liberty Memorial, a field trip guide to Kansas City's most visiblelandmark site. The book will be sent to area school resource centers thisweek. AR.CHiTiV

LisER_Ty MEMORIALThe field trip guide emphasizes the role which people, geography, politics,economics, art and history play in the development of a structure, whether itbe a building or another aspect of the designed environment. The activitiesin the guide help to develop skills in reading, writing, math, computergraphics, and art. A learning poster of the Memorial site; a visual scavengerhunt to be used on the site; a Liberty Memorial model to be assembled; and ascript to be used when visiting the Memorial are all a part of the learningpackage. A final section in the field trip guide addresses the issue of citizenresponsibility for the built environment and includes a "City BeautifulAward" certificate to be used to honor citizens wno improve or add to thebuilt environment.

"We are especially pleased with the teacher support and involvementwith this product. We feel that the of architect/teacher team isproducing a usable, workable; high-quality teaching tool for theclassroom," comments Ginny Graves, regional education coordinator forthe American Institute of Architects. "The fact that our materials arebacked up with teacher participation in the project and architecturalsupport indicates a high probability for the success of theenvironmental education program. Karen Dell, curriculum advisor,adds, 'The activities in Architivity: Liberty Memorial develop allthinking skills and are multi-disciplinary. What ttober tool to usethan our own environment, our own city, to teach basic concepts andenhance skills?"

Introducing built environment education into the schools through curriculummaterials support, such as the field trip guide, Architivity: LibertyMemorial, is just one aspect of the American Institute of Architect's long-range program to improve the climate for good design and city plarhing inthis country. Other support services for schools include city tours, architect-in-the-schools programs, and graduate courses for teachers.
