School of MathematicsCourse UpdateMATH 1111 and degree applicability

The Committee discussed MATH 1111 College Algebra and degree applicability. MATH 1111 has been an existing course at Georgia Tech, under a different title, but has never been taught at Tech. Due to University System Office/Board of Regents policy changes for Learning Support, it is now required Learning Support courses are to be offered exclusively in corequisite format. This means that students requiring Learning Support will enroll in both a collegiate course (MATH 1111) and a corequisite Learning Support course (MATH 0999) that is designed to support mastery of the skills. Since Georgia Tech requires Calculus as the Math for all students, then MATH 1111 would be another level down from MATH 1113 Precalculus which has served as the remedial course students completed as a pathway to Calculus. The question was posed to the Committee if they were in favor of an Institute policy not allowing MATH 1111 to be used toward any degree program for any degree applicable hours (including free electives). MATH 1113 is only allowed to be used as a free elective for select programs. The Committee voted to determine a general sense of how degree applicability and MATH 1111 should be handled.

The vote was 8 (in favor), 2 (not in favor), 2 (abstentions) of establishing an Institute policy not allowing MATH 1111 to be degree applicable to any degree at Georgia Tech. The Registrar will send out communication to the Schools for additional input and report back to the IUCC to determine how to proceed. The purpose of the communication at this point is to have the School Chairs get a sense of the IUCC’s position on this and to get input.

School of Biological SciencesNew Courses

The new courses are a result of the new BIOS- (Biological Sciences) pre-fixed that was approved. All undergraduate BIOL- and APPH- (excluding APPH 1040 and APPH 1050) are being converted to the BIOS- prefix. There are updates to the new courses such as new numbers (to align with USG/BOR Core Curriculum numbering, pre-requisite updates, and updates to titles).

Currently, HTS majors are required to take one (1) approved non-United States focused course out of the 32 credit hours which make up the of HTS Core curriculum. The change is to increase this number to 2 (two) to further emphasize the global component of the HTS degree. This proposal is also a request to shift that course from the three (3) required Science, Technology, and Medicine (STM) courses in the core to two (2) STM courses. The new configuration would be two (2) required STM courses and two (2) required Non-US courses. The committee felt that the special focus in STM that is found in HSOC can be recognized with just two classes instead of three.

New MinorMinor in Chemistry and Biochemistry

The School currently has two separate minors, one in chemistry and one in biochemistry. Despite the undergraduate major distribution of ~65% biochemistry to 35% chemistry, nearly all of the students currently pursuing minors are focused on the chemistry minor. Our director of undergraduate advising has spoken with several students (in particular, those majoring in biomedical engineering) who indicate that this is primarily because the biochemistry minor offerings are more limited with many courses already counting toward the major (not released to the minor).

The Chemistry and Biochemistry minor must comprise at least 15 semester hours, of which at least 9 semester hours are upper-division coursework (numbered 3000 or above).Students must take CHEM 2311, CHEM 2312 or CHEM2313, and CHEM 3511 or CHEM 4511 to earn a minor in chemistry and biochemistry. The remaining hours of classes must be selected from the following list and still adhere to Institute Minor guidelines:

This proposal is to request removing the Narrative Thread from the LMC side of the degree and restructuring the remaining LMC threads to be titled as follows: Interaction Design, Games, and Film & Media Studies. Making these changes to the LMC threads will diversify the degree and allow more flexibility in LMC course options to fulfil BSCM degree requirements.

The Narrative Thread is being removed and the remaining three threads are being restructured. The restructured threads will incorporate an intro class as well as a “thread capstone” unique to each thread. There is no difference in program hours compared to the current LMC threads for the BSCM degree.

Provost’s Advisory Committee on Academic Scheduling

New Course Definitions and Changes to the Unit of Credit in the Catalog

Background

The PACAS subcommittee was charged with examining the impacts of

the current scheduling grid on laboratory courses and with creating

definitions and scheduling guidelines for other ‘non-lecture’ courses.

The goal is to focus on solutions which simultaneously address policy

and protocol issues and respect the pedagogical foundations by which

faculty design courses.

These definitions will bring clarity and flexibility to course structures, but

are not meant to be all inclusive or “one size fits all” and may evolve

over time. It will be important to consider the breakdown of effort

required of the course’s pedagogical needs and align a New Course

Proposal (NCP) request with a structure that is most representative of

how the course is scheduled for best learning outcomes. In many cases,

new course numbers will not be required.

New Course Definitions and Changes to the Unit of Credit in the Catalog

UNIT OF CREDIT – New Catalog Language

The current Academic Calendar is semester-based, consisting of 15 weeks of instruction in a standard Fall/Spring semester where one contact hour is equal to 50 minutes of instruction. The amount of class attendance is 750 minutes for each scheduled credit hour in a standard semester.

One unit of credit represents how much time a typical student is expected to devote to learning per week of study. Each unit of credit is representative of in-seat effort and out-of-seat effort. One credit awarded yields a total of 3 contact hours of effort on the student’s behalf. The breakdown of effort from in-seat effort (scheduled time) vs. out-of-seat effort (non-scheduled time) differs by course structure and schedule type.

For scheduled time, one 15-minute instructional break per 75 minutes of continuous instruction will be included for courses meeting in durations of greater than 75 continuous minutes.

Schools of Economics and International AffairsNew BS/MS OptionBS in Economics and International Affairs/MS in EconomicsECON BS/MS Degree Eligibility RequirementsStudents with a GPA of 3.5 or higher in EIA courses are eligible to apply for the program after completion of 30 semester credit hours at Georgia Tech, but before the completion of 75 semester credit hours, including transfer and advanced placement credits. Students who have more than 75 credit hours will be considered for the program on a case-by-case basis. Admissions decisions will be based on GPA and judgments of the Graduate Committee and faculty who have served as advisors or instructors. Continuation in the program will require the B.S. student to maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher in their EIA courses. The program will not penalize students who opt out after the bachelor’s degree. Proposed BS/MS Please note, the requested curriculum change for the BS EIA degree will require that students in the BS EIA/MS ECON program will take 6 hours of ECON electives at the 6000 level. The courses will be used to satisfy the 6 hours of electives for the BS program and the 6 hours of electives for the MS program. Prior to enrolling in 6000-level ECON courses, students will be required to complete ECON 3110 Advanced Microeconomics, ECON 3120 Advanced Macroeconomics, and ECON 3161 Econometrics. Students will be encouraged to take 6 credit hours from 6105, 6016, 6140, or 6160 (the “core” MS ECON courses) during enrollment as a BS student. However, they will have flexibility to enroll in any 6000 ECON course whose prerequisite requirements they have met. Currently, there are over a dozen ECON courses offered at the 6000-level which only have 4000-level prerequisite courses that a BS student is likely to be able to meet.

School of Industrial and Systems EngineeringDegree ModificationBachelor of Science in Industrial EngineeringCreate flexibility for General Concentration - The General IE was created to help students to stay on track if they cannot select the suitable named concentration in time when ISyE started offering concentrations 12 years ago. It is the most restrictive curriculum with 5 required ISyE courses and 1 elective. Initially, over half of the students wound up graduating with the General Concentration. Gradually, students and advisors have learned how to select a named concentration suitable for the students’ interests. There no longer is a need for a restrictive concentration. The objective of this change is to make General IE the most flexible so students may pursue broad areas within the IE domain.

Current General IE Requires 5 ISyE courses, including:1) ISyE 3039 Methods-Quality Improve, 2) ISyE 3103 Sply Chain Mod: Logistics, 3) ISyE 3104 Sply Chain Mod: Manf&Ware, 4) ISyE 4031 Regression/Forecasting, and 5) ISyE 4301 Supply Chain Economics. And one of the following concentration electives: ISyE 4111 Advanced Supply Chain Logistics, ISyE 4133 Adv Optimization, ISYE4232 Adv Stochastic Sys, or ISyE 4311 Capital Investment Analysis.

Proposed General IE requires any 5 courses from any concentration electives, including both depth and breadth electives. There are only 2 minor restrictions:

– A maximum of 1 non-ISYE titled course is allowed. Some concentration electives are from CS, CX, ECON, MATH and MGT. This is true for all concentrations to maintain sufficient IE content.

– No more than one ISYE 4803 special topics course is allowed unless approval is obtained from the Assoc. Undergraduate Chair. This is to ensure program coherence.
