The School of Public PolicyNew DegreeMaster of Science in Sustainable Energy and Environmental Management

A professional MSEEM offered by the School of Public Policy would make graduates more competitive in sustainability and climate change fields, by providing them with a practitioner-oriented degree that clearly distinguishes them as trained professionals in sustainability. The professional Masters will be distinct in three ways:

By focusing on a professional degree rather than a research-focused degree, the professional Masters will have different academic emphases, attract different students and serve a different market.

By making the courses available through Georgia Tech’s Distance Learning Program, the professional Masters will attract a new community of students that its current MS programs cannot reach, particularly those who have full- or part-time jobs and may be located far from Atlanta.

By allowing for the completion of the professional Masters in one year, through any combination of distance learning or classes taken in Atlanta, the proposed curriculum of 4-4-2 courses in the fall-spring-summer will have additional appeal. At the same time, a two-year 2-2-1 course program will allow the participation of working students/learners. In addition, the 4-course associated Graduate Certificate will offer a stand-alone program or one that could lead to the MSEEM.

Curriculum The MSEEM can be completed either full time (4-4-2 courses in a single year) or part time (2-2-1 courses each year for 2 years). Thirty (30) credit hours will be required to complete the program. The program be offered either on campus or in an asynchronous format on-line. One new course will be required. Every faculty member teaching in the program will be provided with a handbook that covers operational procedures, best practices for communication flow, classroom technology, copyright laws, and export control. Additionally, all “first time” faculty will be personally contacted by the Distance Learning (DL) office and extended an invitation to meet in the classroom where they will be teaching the distance learning section. During this session, DL staff addresses all of the questions and concerns of the faculty member and discusses options for instruction available using the multimedia equipment found in the DL classrooms. Georgia Tech Professional Education (GTPE) also provides facilities and support for faculty members who are recording lecture content for asynchronous, online delivery. A DL technician is assigned to work with each faculty member during every class meeting time to assist in effectively capturing the total classroom experience and lecture content for asynchronous delivery.

The School of Public PolicyNew Degree Master of Science in Sustainable Energy and Environmental Management(Continued)

The proposed curriculum is designed to have a professional focus in Sustainable Energy & Environmental Management, rather than a research focus (like our MSPP degree). It will be distinct from the MSPP degree program, by building heavily on the E&E concentration that currently exists in SPP. The one-year program with combined on-campus and on-line students is also distinct.

PROGRAM OF STUDY

Required courses: 6 credit hours• Sustainable Energy & Environmental Management (a new course that will be made available on campus and on-

line) – 3 credit hours

• Economics of Environmental Policy (PUBP 6312—an existing course that will be made available on-line). – 3 credit hours

Methods Electives: 6 credit hours

Sustainable Energy and Environmental Energy electives: 9 credit hours

Policy and Management Electives: 3 credit hours

Professional Paper: 6 credit hours
