INSTALLATION OF RETRACTABLE LANDING GEARS IN THEORPEDO T211 AIRCRAFT
THORPEDO T211 AIRCRAFT
OBJECTIVE• To replace the fixed Tri-pod landing gear system
with a retractable Tri–pod landing gear system in the aircraft.
• By replacing the landing gear system the drag in the aircraft can be reduced thereby enhancing its performance.
• In order to change the landing gear, the design of the wing has to be altered, thus supporting the retractable landing gear system.
SPECIFICATIONS
Wingspan 26 ft. 8m Length 19' 3” 5.8m Height 6.3 ft. 1.9m Wing area 115 ft2. 10.68m2 Landing gear oleo strutsUseful Load 605 lbs. 274 kg Cockpit width 40" 102cm Gross weight 1,270 lbs. 556 kg Empty weight 665 lbs 302 Kg Wing loading 11.lb/sf 52 kg/m2 Fuel capacity 21 gal 79.5 ltr Baggage 40 Lbs. 18.1 kg Engine Jabiru 3300 -120 H
PERFORMANCE
• Stall speed (flaps) 47 mph 41kts
• Stall speed (clean) 52 mph 45 kts • Top Level Speed 132 mph 115 kts • Takeoff roll 350 ft. 107 m • Landing roll 400 ft. 122 m • Climb Rate 1,020 fpm 310 mpm • Service Ceiling 15,300 ft. 4,724 m • Maximum Range 375 mi. 326 n.m.
RETRACTABLE LANDING GEAR
• To decrease drag in flight some undercarriages retract into the wings and/or fuselage with wheels flush against the surface or concealed behind doors; this is called retractable gear.
HOW DOES IT WORK???

RETRACTABLE LANDING GEAR
ADVANTAGES OF RETRACTABLE LANDING GEAR
• Drag Reduction.
• Less SFC.
• Enhanced Range and Endurance.
Let,Wing Span , b = 7.62mWing Area, S = 9.75m2
S = b x Croot
Solving,
Croot = 1.28m
Aspect Ratio, A.R =
= 5.953m
Wing loading, =
= 576.607N/m2
Stall Velocity, Vstall =39 knots
=20.063m/s
CLmax =
Density at sea level= 1.225kg/m3
Hence, CLmax = 2.338746
Reynolds's number, Re =
0= 1.667x10-5 Ns/m2
0 = 1.225kg/m3
Re = 3.8318023 x 106
Hence its transient flow.
For the required CLmax and Reynold’s number following airfoil is selected
