What is Infection Control?

Introduction.Some individuals in your care will experience incontinenceleakage due to products that don’t fit properly. When they experience bladder leakage or bowel accidents, their skin is exposed to urine or feces, sometimes for a prolonged period of time. This may lead to a skin condition called Incontinence Associated Dermatitis (IAD), which can be uncomfortable and also compromise skin integrity.

The importance of skin.Because skin does a variety of jobs – protects muscles, bones, and organs, maintains regular body temperature, and provides a barrier from infections – it’s important to keep it strong. With age, skin can start to weaken and become more fragile, which puts individuals at risk for infection. TENA® Cleansing Cream is pH balanced and offers gentle cleansing while also conditioning fragile skin.

How to Prevent & Manage Incontinence Associated Dermatitis Signs and Symptoms.Infection control begins with early detection of Incontinence Associated Dermatitis. Look for beginning signs, which includes a red rash, usually on the buttocks and the backs of legs. If you notice any crusty or weeping skin on individuals, this usually indicates a more severe case.

Minimize the risk of IAD.The best way to help compromised individuals is to regularly inspect the affected skin, making sure the skin stays dry. Also pay attention to the indicator lines on our briefs, which will let you and your staff know if a product needs changing. Always check for fecal incontinence since the indicator only informs of urine incontinence. Cleanse the skin immediately to protect individuals from infection, and use a protective barrier cream if you think it’s necessary.
