Introduction

Welcome to Instant Map Skills: Neighborhoods & Communities. This bookcontains a variety of activities that can be used with the colorfulNeighborhoods & Communities map included on page 33. The

book is divided into three parts. Part 1 contains activities that focus on placesand services in neighborhoods and communities. The activities in Part 2 helpchildren identify urban, suburban, and rural communities. Map skills, such asusing a compass rose and following routes on a map, are covered in Part 3. The

activities are easy to do, and mostrequire only simple materials such aspencils, paper, and tape.

These activities are designed toprovide you with options for

allowing children to work ingroups, pairs, or individually.

The map on page 9 is a black-and

working independently.Activities can be done inany order, depending

upon the needs of yourstudents. Most activities are appropriate

for grades 1 through 3. However, some activities, such as using amap scale, may be useful only for third graders. If there is an activity that seemstoo hard or too easy for children, simply skip it and select another. Theseactivities also cover a variety of learning styles that include visual, auditory, and kinesthetic.
