Jockamo, a giant anteater, resides in the Tropical Forest at Franklin Park Zoo. These animals use their long claws to break open hills and mounds in search of insects, and can consume up to 35,000 insects a day.

Dear Zoo Supporters,

From the start of construction on Nature’s Neighborhoods – the new George Robert White Fund Children’s Zoo to the fundraising record set by our Zootopia gala, this past fiscal year saw Zoo New England build on successes achieved in recent years to further fulfill its mission to inspire people to protect and sustain the natural world for future generations.

Our animal family expanded with the births of cotton-top tamarin twins, a white-cheeked gibbon, and a markhor goat, among many others. In the spring, we welcomed Seymour, a two-year-old jaguar, to Stone Zoo where it is hoped that he will successfully breed with female Chessie. Our education programs served 231,218 visitors of all ages, a 10 percent increase from FY 15, and overall attendance grew from 588,630 visitors last year to 617,211 in FY 16. With our commitment to educating the next generation of conservation stewards, we were especially pleased that attendance by Massachusetts schoolchildren increased in FY 16 to 90,633, compared to 66,077 in FY 15.

Following the completion of a successful capital campaign, construction began in the fall on Nature’s Neighborhoods – the new George Robert Fund Children’s Zoo at Franklin Park Zoo. This engaging, discovery-based space was designed to introduce children to relatable ecological concepts all while having fun. At Stone Zoo, we began planning for the new Animal Discovery Center and improved visitor amenities such as a new entrance and ticketing area, new restrooms, and a new gift shop. These upgrades to Stone Zoo will increase customer satisfaction, help attract new visitors, and assist in increasing revenues. The Animal Discovery Center will feature hands-on programming, interactive learning opportunities, animal exhibits, and other elements that will encourage children to build meaningful connections with the natural world.

Strengthened and energized by this growth, and with the support and work of our highly engaged Board of Directors, in FY 16 we began mapping out a strategic plan for the next three years. A Strategic Planning Committee comprised of Board members, Advisory Council members and members of the Executive Team is developing an ambitious blueprint to advance our mission delivery and conservation impact, as well as expand our capacity to create fun and engaging experiences that connect all of our visitors to the wonders of the natural world. We are fortunate to have highly-skilled professional staff, a strong core of devoted volunteers, a talented Advisory Council, and a dedicated Board of Directors to ensure that we are able to deliver on our mission, now and in the future.

We are grateful to the loyal and generous Zoo members, donors, and volunteers who help us provide meaningful experiences that will be remembered long after our visitors leave our zoos. With your continued support, we will realize our vision for these beloved Zoos and inspire caring and action in all of our guests.

Sincerely,

John Linehan President & CEO

Each and every day, Zoos are working to save species from extinction while also serving as centers of education, conservation, and important research that is assisting scientists in the field.

During a zoo visit, guests have the opportunity to connect in meaningful, and memorable ways, to the species in our care – to truly learn about them, what their wild cousins are facing and why conservation is so important. Respect comes from understanding, and we are committed to educating visitors of all ages about the importance of respecting wildlife and natural places.

In FY 16, 617,211 people—up from 588,630 in FY 15—visited the Zoos and connected with incredible wildlife from all over the world. Whether watching baby gorilla Azize explore and interact with her family inside the Tropical Forest, marveling at the agility of a markhor goat kid scrambling up the rocky peaks of the Himalayan Highlands, or watching cotton-top tamarins dote on their tiny babies, our guests have the opportunity to make meaningful connections to wildlife that can inspire caring and action.

Zoos have evolved tremendously through the years, and this evolution continues as our knowledge increases and as the situation in the wild continues to change. Zoos are on the front lines of critical conservation work and contribute to this immensely in terms of time and resources. Zoo New England is proud to support the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ SAFE initiative (Saving Animals from Extinction), a bold new effort focused on #SavingSpecies. SAFE is a new commitment by the Association’s 229 accredited zoos and aquariums to harness our collective resources, focus on specific endangered species, and save them from extinction by restoring healthy populations in the wild.

Nearly every animal in our Zoos are the result of multi-generational captive breeding. ZNE participates in a number of Species Survival Plans for animals ranging from gorillas, giraffes and jaguars to wattled cranes, pygmy hippos, ring-tailed lemurs, Baird’s tapirs and many others. Species Survival Plans (SSP) are cooperative, inter-zoo programs coordinated nationally through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) that are designed to maintain genetically diverse and demographically healthy and stable captive populations of species.

SIGNIFICANT ANIMAL ACHIEVEMENTSThroughout FY 16, we celebrated the births and hatches of new animals at Franklin Park and Stone zoos. In February, we welcomed Chewbacca, a Nigerian dwarf goat kid born to Leia and Lucky in Franklin Farm. That same month, three hammerkop chicks hatched in the Tropical Forest, marking the first hammerkop hatches at Franklin Park Zoo in 24 years. In 1979, Franklin Park Zoo was the first zoo in North America to have a successful hatch. Since that time, 73 hammerkops, including the new chicks, have hatched at Franklin Park Zoo. In May, Stone Zoo saw the successful birth of a female markhor. Markhors are an endangered mountain goat species, and the birth was the result of successful breeding recommended by the Markhor SSP.

We also celebrated the births of several endangered primate species at Stone Zoo. As a participant in the Cotton-Top Tamarin SSP, Stone Zoo was thrilled to welcome the twin cotton-top tamarins born to Amazon and Orinoco in July. On exhibit with their five siblings and parents, the twins have given our guests a unique opportunity to observe the family dynamics of a very social species as they grow up. In August, we welcomed Jian, a male baby white-cheeked gibbon, a critically endangered

species. The baby gibbon’s birth resulted from a recommended breeding of our gibbons Iggy and Kien Nhan by the White-cheeked Gibbon SSP.

With the hope of breeding Chessie, Stone Zoo’s resident jaguar, we also welcomed Seymour, a two-year-old male jaguar from Tulsa Zoo, to the Treasures of the Sierra Madre exhibit in April. ZNE participates in the Jaguar SSP and it is hoped that he and Chessie will successfully reproduce in the future. Elusive and solitary, jaguars — the largest cat and top predator in the Western hemisphere, are native to Central and South America and up to our southwest border.

All of the animals at our zoos act as ambassadors for their species and illustrate for visitors the importance of wildlife protection and habitat preservation. The management of animals in AZA-accredited institutions is vital for ensuring healthy, genetically diverse populations. Working collaboratively with other institutions participating in SSPs and critical conservation work, zoos have helped a number of species rebound from the brink of extinction.

Providing meaningful connections to wildlife is at the heart of our mission. Through these connections, guests can more fully understand the incredible biodiversity of our planet and the critical role they can play in ensuring it remains a healthy, thriving environment for generations to come.

Whether feeding colorful budgies while walking through Aussie Aviary or experiencing a ride on a dromedary camel, guests of all ages have the unique opportunity to personally connect with wildlife and create cherished, lasting memories. During the summer, a visit is not complete without a stroll through Butterfly Landing, home to hundreds of fluttering butterflies.

At Stone Zoo, guests once again enjoyed the breathtaking sight of majestic birds gliding into the amphitheater during the free-flight, educational bird show, Masters of Flight: Birds of Prey. Regular encounters with education staff at the seasonal American alligator exhibit provided opportunities to learn more about these long-tailed, armored reptiles.

The Zoos’ roster of special events continue to offer some of the most unique experiences of the Greater Boston social and cultural landscape. Franklin Park Zoo’s annual Brew at the Zoo and Stone Zoo’s popular ZooLights, a seasonal evening holiday light show, continued to grow. Brew at the Zoo ticket sales numbered 2,715 in FY 16 compared to 2,397 in FY 15, while ZooLights attendance grew from 50,970 in FY 15 to 63,811 in FY 16. Uncorked, a wine tasting event also held at Franklin Park Zoo, and Ales and Tails, a new event at Stone Zoo, were also well received. Zootopia, our signature gala, attracted 350 guests and raised a record-breaking $414,000. A Wild Affair, an annual tasting fundraiser at Stone Zoo, celebrated its 12th year in June with many guests who came to sample delicious food and drink from local eateries.

Such events and experiences connect our guests with the vast wonders of nature through exploration, discovery, play, education, and imagination. Visitors leave with a greater appreciation and respect for the natural world that will stay with them long after their visits.

Immersive Experiences

At top: A young guest gets an up close experience inside Aussie Aviary. Below: A family learns more about the reindeer at ZooLights, Stone Zoo’s popular annual holiday light show.

We witnessed the impact of our conservation efforts this past year when a red-crowned crane was spotted in Russia’s Muraviovka Park with its presumptive mate. This was exciting news as this particular crane hatched 20 years ago from an egg laid at Franklin Park Zoo. The crane’s journey overseas resulted from Zoo New England’s participation in the Red-crowned Crane Species Survival Plan. In 1996, fertilized eggs produced from red-crowned cranes at Franklin Park Zoo were transported to the National Aviary in Pittsburgh, which coordinated the egg transfers to Russia. Through the transfer program, eggs hatched at the Khingansky Nature Reserve in Far East Russia were reared and released to augment the wild global population, which numbers less than 3,000.

This success in bolstering the population of an endangered species illustrates that while our animal collection is the primary reason people visit our zoos, providing opportunities for our guests to connect local wildlife conservation efforts with global work is critical to fulfilling our mission to inspire and educate the next generation of conservation stewards and leaders.

Closer to home, two Blanding’s turtles that were “head-started” at Stone Zoo were spotted in the wild last June, looking very large and healthy. This work is part of our long collaboration with Grassroots Wildlife Conservation’s Blanding’s turtle research and monitoring program. We were thrilled to see these two head-start “alumni”—one from the 2008-2009 season and one from 2009-2010—doing so well. Several towns over from our work with Blanding’s turtles, ZNE is also working with Grassroots Wildlife Conservation to reintroduce marbled salamanders back into the Middlesex Fells Reservation.

At Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo, guests can directly affect a variety of far-reaching wildlife conservation programs. Conservation kiosks at both Zoos educate visitors about some of

our initiatives and let them vote for the conservation project they’d like to support. Quarters for Conservation dedicates 25 cents from each admission and $2.50 from each membership

to ZNE’s conservation efforts, allowing us to greatly expand funding dedicated to our mission imperative. These are some FY 16 Quarters for Conservation-supported projects:

• A project that protects the critically endangered wild Bactrian camel, of which there are fewer than 1,000 left, and its habitat in the fragile and unique desert ecosystems in the Gobi and Gashun Gobi deserts of northwest China and southwest Mongolia;

• A program promoting the conservation, preservation and protection of the Colobus monkey and its habitat in Kenya;

• Rhinoceros conservation efforts through the International Rhino Foundation (IRF), including anti-poaching and protection programs, focused on the conservation of the five rhino species, which are almost all endangered or critically endangered; and

• The International Crane Foundation (ICF), which works worldwide to conserve cranes and the ecosystems, watersheds, and flyways on which they depend. ZNE’s support was used to protect the remaining important breeding and stopover habitats of white-naped, red-crowned, and hooded cranes and the Oriental white storks in Russia’s Amur River Basin.

ZNE also continues to participate in a coalition working to pass legislation in Massachusetts banning the sale of elephant ivory and rhinoceros horn, part of efforts to curb the escalating global crisis of wildlife trafficking, which is partly fueled by the U.S. ivory market—one of the largest worldwide.

ZNE is also proud to support the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ SAFE initiative (Saving Animals from Extinction), a bold new effort focused on saving species. AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums are part of an integrated network of conservation partners, which spend a combined $160 million a year on field conservation. Through SAFE, zoos and aquariums accredited by AZA will harness their collective resources, focus on specific endangered species, and save them from extinction by restoring healthy populations in the wild.

Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo provide the environment for active exploration, inquiry, and hands-on discovery to inspire people to interact positively with the natural world. Zoo New England’s expansive science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) focused educational programs, which incorporate Massachusetts and federal curriculum frameworks, supplement and build interest in formal science education and enable our guests to explore the complex connection between natural, thriving habitats and wildlife.

The Zoos offer free admission to all Massachusetts schoolchildren throughout the school year. By providing opportunities to under-resourced children who may otherwise not be able to visit our Zoos, we’re able to connect them with the natural world and bring fun and effective educational programming to all members of our community. We were thrilled to welcome 90,633 schoolchildren in FY 16, up from 66,077 in the previous fiscal year.

Through a range of formal and informal programming, the Education department shares the wonders of nature

Sharing the Wonders of the Natural World

with students of all ages—from toddlers in our Playful Paws playgroups to school-aged children, college students doing research, adult education students and casual learners.

In FY 16, ZNE received grant money from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Nature Play initiative to create new Nature Play spaces at both Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo. Instead of metal and plastic structures found in standard playgrounds, nature play spaces incorporate natural elements and surrounding landscape to bring nature to children’s play and learning. Staff at both Zoos designed and built nature play areas that include discovery tables, log balancing, water play, and fort building. Educators also created curriculum for programs in the nature play spaces for all ages to explore, connect, and learn in nature.

To learn more about ZNE’s education programs visit www.zoonewengland.org/discover.

FY16 EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS:• The total number of people served through the

Education department in FY 16 increased by 10 percent to 231,218, compared to 210,004 in FY 15.

●• Completed 366 school programs in FY 16, a 17 percent increase from FY 15.

●• Completed 83 Wild Adventure programs for 789 participants, 24 more programs and 113 more participants than in FY 15.

●• Welcomed three students from Perkins School for the Blind as interpreters for our seventh summer of this partnership.

●• Brought our annual Zoo Camp in-house. We hired an assistant camp director, six senior camp counselors, and seven junior camp counselors from the ZooTeen program to run camps at both Zoos. With grant funding from the Alces Foundation and The Agnes M. Lindsay Trust, we offered $13,000 worth of camperships to 27 children, allowing them to attend Zoo Camp for free.

The hallmark of our youth programs is our summer ZooTeen Program. Since its founding in 1999, this nationally recognized program has engaged more than 1,500 Boston youth in authentic work experiences that allow them to develop professional skills, build a strong sense of self, and provide for themselves and their families. The ZooTeen Program pairs work experiences with professional development workshops to provide a broad exposure to zoo and conservation-oriented careers in a safe, structured and professional learning environment.

In FY 16, ZNE broadened the scope of the professional development workshops to include educational opportunities around “green chemistry,” an area of chemistry and chemical engineering dedicated to products that minimize the use and generation of hazardous substances and waste. ZooTeens created a Styrofoam-like material using mushrooms and other sustainable materials.

Inspiring Tomorrow’s Leaders

Returning ZooTeens were also given the opportunity to provide us helpful insights on ways to improve the Teen Programs. This welcomed leadership opportunity allowed our more experienced participants to have ownership over the program and the Zoo.

In addition to the teen programs, ZNE also has a well-established internship program. While internships are available in many Zoo departments, the Animal Care internships are highly sought after and provide a unique opportunity to gain invaluable, hands-on experience in the field of zookeeping.

As a vibrant member of the cultural community in Boston and beyond, Zoo New England is committed to community participation and access. We work with community-based centers, camps, and groups such as the Greater Grove Hall Main Streets, Project RIGHT, Franklin Park Coalition, Boston Youth Environmental Network, The Emerald Necklace Conservancy, and the Stoneham Chamber of Commerce. We also do outreach to libraries, schools, after-school programs and various other entities.

ZNE was pleased to again be named a partner for the Boston Summer Learning Project, a collaboration between Boston After School and Beyond, Boston Public Schools, and philanthropic and community organizations to provide quality summer youth programs. Franklin Park Zoo hosted 30 students for five weeks, deploying its expertise in science learning to enhance students’ academic progress in math and language arts, and improve specific skills such as critical thinking by providing full-day integrated learning experiences.

ZNE remains committed to ensuring that personal financial situations do not constitute a barrier to enjoying and benefiting from Zoo experiences. As an organization whose mission is to connect people to the natural world through meaningful

experiences that engage, educate, and inspire the next generation of conservation stewards, it is imperative that we reach everyone within our communities. ZNE’s dedication to this aspect of our mission is evident in our community outreach programs, which include:

• Library Pass Programs: Libraries purchase the pass which entitles their patrons to a discount to the Zoos.

• EBT Program: Recognizing that Zoo visits are integral to childhood and learning, participants in the Massachusetts’ EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) program receive deeply discounted admission to the Zoos year-round. Participation increased 212 percent, from 4,115 participants in FY 15 to 12,841 participants in FY 16.

• Community Pass Program: Non-profit organizations and community groups are eligible for a limited amount of free admission passes. ZNE distributed more than 4,200 passes to community groups during FY 16.

• Organizational Pass Program: Non-profit organizations may purchase an institutional pass enabling groups of individuals to attend the Zoos at greatly reduced cost.

Strengthening our Communities

In the fall of 2015, Franklin Park Zoo became a designated spot for the Hubway, a city-wide bike-share program.

Jonathan Gilmour Memorial Scholarship FundIn April 2006, Franklin Park Zoo lost a cherished family member when former Zookeeper Jonathan Gilmour passed away suddenly at age 29. To honor Jonathan and his commitment to the welfare of animals, the Jonathan Gilmour Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in his memory. The fund was established by Zoo New England with the generous financial support and volunteer leadership from the Gilmour family.

Award winners are ZNE staff members who have been employed by the Zoo for at least one year.

Each May, the Jonathan Gilmour Memorial Scholarship Bike Ride is held in Hollis, N.H. Hundreds of riders celebrate Jonathan’s memory and through the years this Ride has raised tens of thousands of dollars to support the scholarship fund.
