At the Communituy Foundation, we are in the business of building a vibrant community

Message from the Chair and Executive Director

It is the partnerships we create between our generous fundholders and our effective nonprofits that make the difference. Last year, $134,859 was granted to more than 40 charitable organizations to help them in their efforts to build a strong and vibrant community. In 2012, we reached $5,598,060 in total assets within the Community Foundation – a new milestone. We are committed to financial accountability, effective communication, providing one-stop donor services and fostering powerful connections to the community and invite you to explore the highlights from the Community Foundation’s 2012 Annual Report (full report on our website at www.cambridgefoundation.org) and learn more about our work.

A special thank you to our retiring Board members, Madeleine Poynter, Mike Stork and David Thomas who have provided exceptional insight and leadership during their terms on our Board. To all friends of the Foundation, thank you for your continued support and commitment to our community.

Cambridge & North Dumfries Community Foundation (CNDCF) is preparing to participate for the 7th year in the annual Cambridge Stewardship Tree Planting initiative. Each year, Cambridge City Green plans citywide clean up events, information sessions and planting initiatives to engage the community in caring for the environment.

Supporting the focus of ensuring native and endangered trees, shrubs and wildflowers are planted in key areas around the city of Cambridge, the CNDCF has contributed in numerous ways to the Cambridge Stewardship initiative. The effort has included over 35 community groups, businesses, schools, etc. and over 1000 volunteers, many who return each year to support this “Green” cause.

The Cambridge and North Dumfries Community Foundation has actively engaged in this effort by contributing time and resources to the Cambridge Stewardship initiative. In past years, the CNDCF has assisted in more ways than just providing trees and plants. In 2007, the inaugural year of Cambridge City Green’s Cambridge Stewardship Program, the Community Foundation purchased an equipment trailer and decorative branding; this trailer is now well known throughout the community as it has been used throughout the years by other community groups involved in environmental projects, including the Rare tree planting group, Centennial School, Our Lady of Fatima School and Home Depot.

The Ages Foundation Fund was developed as a donor advised fund just over six years ago. The founder of this fund has a deep interest and commitment to the environment as well as the welfare of animals and children at risk. It is through this fund and the commitment of its founder that the Community Foundation has been able to make such a cumulative impact on the environment in Cambridge. “It has been my distinct pleasure to have worked with this family over the last six years. Their interest in the Community Foundation and their interest in the projects that they have supported has consistently encouraged us to go further, learn more, and try new ideas.” noted Jane Neath, Executive Director.

School Sisters of Notre Dame Legacy Fund The School Sisters of Notre Dame Legacy Fund was created in 2012 to provide a legacy for the School Sisters of Notre Dame. The purpose of the fund will be to support underprivileged women and children addressing in particular their educational and societal needs. In creating this fund, the Notre Dame Foundation (Burlington) Inc. desired to continue to support education of the whole person and other initiatives that will create transformative and long term solutions to issues such as poverty.

The focus for this fund has a rich history. Though its roots lie deep in the past, the congregation traces its actual beginning to 1833, when Caroline Gerhardinger and two other women began a common religious life on Bavaria. Gerhardinger grounded her community in poverty in order to reach the poor. This solidarity with the poor continues to this day. There are women ministering in 35 countries and their desire is to bring about societal inclusion in our world.

Through this donor advised fund, the Community Foundation will continue to be a vehicle to carry out the same commitment to children and families as the Notre Dame Foundation (Burlington) Inc. while also carrying forth the beliefs and values of the School Sisters of Notre Dame.

Smart and Caring Community FundGovernor General David Johnson became a patron of Community Foundations of Canada in 2011. His vision to build a smart and caring communities is based on three pillars: innovation, philanthropy and volunteerism which meshes with our guiding principle to demonstrate philanthropic leadership. In recognition of his vision, we have renamed our unrestricted and community fund as our Smart and caring Community Fund. This fund gives our Foundation the greatest flexibility to respond to current community needs by providing grants to charities in Cambridge and North Dumfries.

Ready, Set... Go!Basketballs, badminton rackets, dodge balls, beach balls, hoola hoops, ultimate Frisbees…fun, family and healthy living! The True Sport Fund is one way that the Cambridge & North Dumfries Community Foundation (CNDCF) works with donors to create novel and impactful ways to give back to the community.

The True Sport Fund provided a grant to support a one-day launch event with Langs in Cambridge – Ultimate Sports Day. Funding from CNDCF’s grant went towards the purchase of equipment for Langs new recreation program for children, youth and families. It also funded the launch event’s healthy snacks and appropriate shoes for youth to wear to play sports. At the Ultimate Sports Day families had the opportunity to try new sports activities together, learn the rules and skills for healthy living.

Here’s how this program impacted the local community:• 10volunteersfromCNDCF,KidsAbility,Langsand Cambridge Sports supported the event• 40peopleaged5andupparticipatedintheUltimate Sports Day event• Grantamount:$2000• SportsequipmentwillbeusedweeklyforLangs recreational programs and will continue to be used by hundreds of children weekly.

Marilyn Savage and David Hysinger formed a partnership later in life. Together, they have developed an unrestricted named fund as a way of building a legacy that will last forever in Cambridge, the place they call home. The grants from their fund will be directed to needs and interests that are of greatest importance each year. In 2012, their fund helped to support projects that were also supported by the True Sport Foundation.

Marilyn has had a lifelong interest in sport but her great love is gardening and eating healthy foods grown locally. Dave has lived in Cambridge and has had a lifelong interest in wood and building furniture. Together, they have travelled across Canada as well as many other interesting places.

It seemed natural that the Community Foundation would connect Marilyn Savage and David Hysinger’s Fund to the True Sport projects that were a cornerstone of our work in 2012. Just like the legacy that Marilyn and David have built through the Community Foundation so to is the legacy and impact of the True Sport Foundation.

Total contributionsDonors from all walks of life give to funds at the Community Foun-dation to support our general community grant-making, particular charities or scholarships. In 2012, contributions to endowed, funds for distribution and our managed fund remained very strong.

Total grantsIn 2012, our grants supported charitable organizations throughout our community and beyond. In 2012, the Foundation surpassed $1.5 million in cumulative grants over its 14 year history. Also in 2012 the Foundation received approval to grant across Canada.

Total fundsThe threshold for establishing a named fund begins at $5,000 and varies with fund type. The graph below includes all funds administered by the Foundation at any time in our history.

Total assetsPositive financial markets combined with strong donations contrib-uted to the significant increase in total assets.

Investment returns (Net of Investment Fees)The Foundation’s financial stewardship strategy looks at a long-term horizon to achieve maximum returns consistent with prudent investment practices, ensuring legacies created by donors are respected. Early in 2012, the Foundation changed its investment advisor to Aon Hewitt and its discretionary investment managers to Walter Scott & Partners for international equities, Connor,Clark & Lunn Investment Management and Franklin Templeton Bissett for Canadian equities and TD Asset Management for fixed income. In addition, the Foundation initiated a third party investment program in 2012 through Rae & Lipskie.

Asset MixThe Foundation maintains a balanced investment portfolio.
