do best. The winning gardens showed a pleasing design leading the eye from one point to another with thought given to the type of plants and how high they grow. The gardens were judged in two categories: Standard length (about 35m) and Longer gardens. The scores were on the whole very close. In the Standard category the winner is 1606 Chalgrove, second is 812 Cleeve and third is 971 Ewelme. In the Longer category the winner is 6 Wargrave N and second is 16 Wargrave N. The owners of these gardens will each receive a voucher for one of

the eateries in Henley. We, at the Herald, extend sincere thanks to Mark of The Hound, Sean of The Makery, Debbie of About Time, Anrike of Ducks and Sean of Montagues for their generous donations and know that the recipients will enjoy their treats. We hope the prizes will inspire them and others to make even more effort with their pavements. Depending on the reaction we may run this competition again. Some of the winners may not even know that they were entered. Some owners did enter their own pavements but the majority were

The pavement garden competition was judged by two Henleyites with impeccable qualifications: Anni Reinhold of Little Austria (seen here in the nursery) and Leslie Hoy of Gordon Road, a horticulturalist with Rand Water, took their tasks seriously and

wrote several comments for each of the 18 entrants. Leslie was particularly concerned about water requi rements of the pavement gardens. He was on the lookout for water wise plants and mulch. He noted that many gardens have many roses which can look spectacular but are very thirsty. He noticed some gardens

harbouring aliens, a real no-no. Anni was impressed that some gardens were planned in such a way as to have some colour or points of interest in every season. There were a couple gardens where there were many irises but they were under trees which is not where they

The October issue of the Henley Herald presented an article by Malcolm Hack introducing this concept to Henleyites. Folks, trust us – THIS IS A BRILLIANT IDEA! Creating an Urban Improvement Precinct for Henley will give residents many, many benefits. It is all very exciting! With the support of 66% of Henley property owners, Henley will put forward a request to Mid-vaal to become a Special Rates Area. This will mean a small in-crease in the rates bill of each property owner ( possibly between R50 – R75 per month – not even the price of a good pizza). This will give Henley additional funding to spend just on our dear little village. Residents will be able to propose ideas for better security ( a comprehensive camera and surveillance system is on the cards), keeping the village clean and tidy, more street lights, clearing va-cant stands, and so on. All current committees and councils may be active stakeholders. The possibilities are endless.

Other areas around South Africa have gone this route with true success: areas like Umhlanga, Ballito and Llandudno. It really works. What is needed now is the support of the community. Please, please supply your signatures: Only property owners may sign, but if you own multiple properties you can sign for each property. Each property equals one valid signature. There is a signature booklet with Paul at the Bottle Store. Marius, Peter and Dewald of CPF have books. Malcolm, Marie and Rayno all have booklets and will soon be going from door to door.

Please get in touch: Malcolm at 083 625 9250 or [email protected], Marie at 082 925 2114 or [email protected] and Rayno 072 591 9662 or [email protected]

Arthur and Sue MacDonald who are both well known in the village for the work they do for Henley Watch and Arthur's security business Macjobbing, threw a big party to celebrate their 60th birthdays recently. The party goers, many of whom were from Zimbabwe, were also celebrating the political demise of Uncle Bob.

Dear ResidentsInformation and communication technology has changed rapidly over the past 20 years with a key development being the emergence of social media. I remember when we used to write letters and wait for people to call us on our home phone. I remember a time when people actually got excited when they received a letter or Christmas card in the post. It also used to be the case that people got their gossip over the garden fence or from a bit of curtain twitching. But now we have the internet and the nature of chat has changed forever. We have all seen nasty comments online - whether they be a row on Whatsapp groups or a catty response on Facebook. The internet acts like a kind of digital-fueled alcohol, freeing us to say things to people that we would never dare to say face to face. I have to admit that I am very sad at how hateful the general tone of online conversation has become. The problem is that the nature of the internet means that within groups and the wider social networks we are all part of, people are only a few clicks away from being able to annoy, frustrate or upset a whole range of people without experiencing the upset or hurt the comments may have caused. Social forums aren't real life conver-sations and neither are the repercussions for misbehaving. The computer screen shields people from the negative consequences of offending someone in person. And for many the temptation to respond to a post they find annoying or frustrating is just too hard to resist - as seems to have happened within various on-line groups in the community recently. What we do to counteract that is unclear but we could start by urging people, including ourselves simply to post something positive and to actively seek to be kind. Jeff Bezos founder and CEO of Amazon.com is nothing if not a master of technology — he has built his company, and his fortune, on the rise of the Internet and his own intellect. But he says his greatest lesson did not come from computing power or brainpower, but about what he learned when he made his grandmother cry. Even as a 10-year-old boy, it turns out, Bezos had a passion for crunching numbers. During a summer road trip with his grandparents, young Jeff got fed up with his grandmother's smoking in the car — and decided to do something about it. From the backseat, he calculated how many cigarettes per day his grandmother smoked, how many puffs she took per cigarette, the health risk of each puff, and announced to her with great fanfare, “You've taken nine years off your life!” Bezos's calculations may have been accurate — but the reaction was not what he expected. His grandmother burst into tears. His grandfather pulled the car off to the side of the road and asked young Jeff to step out. And then his grandfather taught a lesson that this now-billionaire often shares: “My grandfather looked at me, and

after a bit of silence, he gently and calmly said, 'Jeff, one day you'll understand that it's harder to be kind than clever.'” That's a lesson I wish more people understood. On certain days, one can wake up feeling like doing something good but you see someone do something so hurtful it takes all that nice energy out of you. It's the chain reaction our world has gotten into for quite some time and I am quite sure it's getting to all of us in some way. It may be a natural impulse for us to lash out when we are angered, but we can control it. We are remarkable creatures capable of training our minds and souls to react in love, patience, kindness, self-control and hope. Try it out next time you want to hate. It may go a lot better for everyone involved. Or at least don't “like” or share the next marginally racist/misogynist/elitist “funny” message/video that pops up in your social networks. It's mean. And deep down I really believe we are all better than that. Or at least we can get there. One day at a time. I wish you all a wonderful holiday season and may you find many reasons for happiness. I will still be around so if you need me you can get me on the number below.Regards – Councillor Lynda Parsonson

On the eve of the 4th anniversary of Madiba's passing, MLM mayor Cllr Bongani Baloyi hosted a social cohesion dialogue at the Mey-erton Town Hall, to commemorate Mandela's passing and celebrate the legacy he has left behind – that of collective activism, unity and honest leadership. The main aim of the dialogue was to have the tough conversations we so often shy away from on the issues of racialism and recon-ciliation in South Africa, and forging ways to move forward together.

The dialogue hosted N e l s o n M a n d e l a Foundat ion CEO, Sello Hatang,(right) author and political a n a l y s t , P r i n c e Mashele,(left) former MP and founder of the African Democratic Change Party, Dr Makhosi Khoza, and

was facilitated by POWER FM anchor, Onkgopotse JJ Tabane. The discussion was also broadcast live simultaneously on POWER FM, Theta FM, Lekoa FM and Sedibeng FM. The main resolutions to come out of the dialogue included calls

Ray and Gunter Lander of Shillingford Road have been running the Walkerville Wine Circle for 10 years now. Gunter is a well-known wine maker and knows his wines well. At their end of year function recently he announced his intended retirement as chairman of this club. He has done this job with such skill, panache and dedication that no-one feels ready to take over from him. Nevertheless he is determined to step down so there will be some changes in the club next year. The monthly dinner meetings are guaranteed to provide an excellent meal at a very reasonable price accompanied by wines from some South African estate explained by an expert. New members are welcome. Those who do not want to commit to membership can just attend meetings when it suits them. See the Who What Where column for contact details.

Henley Watch has a new exco. After the AGM of the Henley Watch the new exco, which was elected without a vote needing to be taken, met at Chairman Sanchia Antunes's home (centre with glasses) for their first meeting. The main change is the new chief of ops Bruce Kellock (at back with beard) who has taken over from Danie Mohr. Sue McDonald (in wheelchair) occupies the new portfolio of Accounts Manager and she will be making many calls to check on recalcitrant payers.

Why is it that there is always some selfish bully who spoils a good thing that gives so many people pleasure? The Evening Star market was such a success and such wonderful advertisement for Henley. Driving down Dinsdale, patrons would see the beautiful homes and gardens and then be entranced by the delightful market in a tranquil setting with happy villagers socialising together. The lovely, tasteful stalls where locals and charities sold their wares raising much needed funds supplied an essential service. We will really miss the market very much!It makes me so sad that villagers seems to be losing some of their benevolence towards one another, self-centred folk moaning about a few cars parked in their street for a few hours once a month (among other things). REALLY?

for South Africans to deliberately seek the barriers keeping them from associating with people outside their “normal” and breaking down those walls; being proactive about national reconciliation and finding ways to advance Madiba's legacy in their day-to-day interactions with others; speaking out against injustices and keeping democratically elected leaders accountable for their actions and the impact of their decisions on the everyday South African. Safeguarding Madiba's legacy is about refusing to be silent in the midst of injustices, consistently holding those in power to account and learning to embrace the diversity of South Africa and our communities. – MLM press release (extract)

The phenomenon that is parkrun has reached Meyerton. Negotiations with authorities that started in April finally bore fruit on 18 November at the Meyerton Sports fields when the inaugural run with a field of 850 plus took place. This was one of the biggest launches of parkruns in the world. Now there will be a parkrun there every Saturday starting at 8.00. Every Saturday in more than 18 countries on 5 continents and 124 locations just in South Africa there are people of all ages and shapes and fitnesses running or walking 5km routes in parks and not paying a cent for the pleasure. By the time they get home all participants will have received an email giving all the stats: their time and place in their age group as well as how many people took part that morn-ing. Participants register only once, online, in advance for a unique athlete number and internationally recognised barcode that can be printed for use when taking part. Participants' results in each event are processed and uploaded online after the run by volunteers. Every aspect of every event is run by volunteers. No-one is paid but there are national sponsors (In SA the main ones are Discovery Vitality, Dischem and Mr Price Sport) who pay for the basic equipment. The volunteers are vital to the continued success of the scheme and consequently they are made to feel appreciated. This is the heart of parkrun and volunteering teaches all valuable skills that can be used in other parts of their lives. The founder, Paul Sinton Hewitt, started parkruns in London in 2004 with only 13 runners when they were first still known as UK Time Trials. In 2011 Bruce Fordyce, of Comrades Marathon fame, brought parkrun to SA and now there are half a million registered members in this country. In Meyerton the event directors are Roland and Anel du Plessis. They are pictured with Bruce who was there at the inaugural event.

so successful must be that it is sustainable: For the participants it can be a quick start to every weekend for the whole family, which does not touch the budget and gets them into nature. For the organisers it is an automated, repeated event that, once the volunteers are in place, can happen every week without undue demands on the rest of their lives.

Recently members of the Henley Bird Club, Birds of a Feather, were entertained and informed by guest speaker, Johan Lotter, second from left, seen here with the committee, Jutta Gotz, Ben Botha (chairman) Dave Ludlow, and Hazel Cameron-Jepson.

Henley birders have enjoyed another year of monthly talks accompanied by magnificent photos on a wide range of bird related topics. Next year's meetings start with a braai on 20 January. The club is looking for new members. A wide knowledge of birds is not a prerequisite. See the Who, What, Where Column for contact details.
