Some may be moving off-campus for the first time and others finding a new place to live. Here are some important NCAA rules reminders related to student-athlete housing for UCLA supporters to keep in mind. Under NCAA rules it is permissible for UCLA donors and supporters (“boosters”) to rent their properties (apartment, room, guest house, condo, etc.) to current UCLA student-athletes, provided the rental arrangement between the booster and the student-athlete is also available to the general student body or general public at the same rate. Please contact the Compliance Office first should such an opportunity present itself. For NCAA rules purposes, apartment or rental property managers may be considered boosters, and as such may not provide student-athletes with extra benefits. Examples of extra benefits involving housing include, but are not limited to, the following: • Free or reduced cost housing for any length of time • Lease signing incentives not available to all tenants • Reserved parking spaced if offered at lower cost than to other tenants • Use of an automobile or other transportation as part of the housing arrangement • Loans (including co-signing for loans) • Waived security deposit NCAA rules don’t permit current student-athletes to be hired to house sit, regardless if they are paid or not. Violations regarding housing and extra benefits will result in the student-athlete being declared ineligible until he/ she repays the value of the extra benefit(s) received and may result in a withholding from competition. For boosters in violation of NCAA rules, schools reserve the right to withhold athletic department privileges. We appreciate your efforts in helping UCLA maintain a culture of compliance throughout the year. If you have questions about student-athlete housing or other compliance matters, feel free to contact Dan Goldberg, Assistant Athletic Director Compliance at (310) 794-8813 or [email protected]. Director’s Dinner – May 9, 2016 As a thank you to Wooden Athletic Fund donors at the Director's Circle and Wooden Benefactor levels for the 2015-16 year, UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero and his wife Anne Marie were hosts to UCLA Athletics’ most generous donors at the annual Director's Dinner on May 9th. Hosted at a unique venue on the UCLA campus each year, this year’s dinner took place on the legendary court of Pauley Pavilion. Guests were greeted at the entrance of Pauley by six of our student-athletes; men’s volleyball player Mitch Stahl, women gymnasts Angi Cipra and Hallie Mossett, men’s basketball player Thomas Welsh, women’s basketball player Nicole Kornet, and women’s volleyball player Claire Felix. With elegant special lighting effects, Pauley Pavilion was transformed into a sophisticated and tastefully decorated venue as it’s never been seen before. Following the reception was a five-course dinner with wine pairings, during which guests listened to words of thanks from Dan Guerrero. Guests were then treated to brief speeches from our head coaches who spoke about their past seasons, offered insight into the future of their program, and their sincere appreciation for these supporters. Before the guests left after the conclusion of a wonderful dinner and program, they received a commemorative gift as a show of UCLA Athletics’ appreciation for their generosity and continued support of our student-athletes and programs. If you would like to learn how you can be included in this most exclusive event of the year, please call the Wooden Athletic Fund Office at 310-206-3302, or email [email protected]. EVENT RECAP "I am a Political Science major from Newport Beach, California. The past few years at UCLA have been some of the most special years of my life, where I have grown both on and off the tennis court. I've made many new friends and developed great relationships with coaches, teammates and professors. I've been lucky to be a part of some championship-contending teams. None of this would be possible without the support of our donors. There are so many people behind the scenes who contribute to the success of our tennis program. They give us the opportunity to succeed and excel as student-athletes at UCLA. Thanks to you, this has been a special season for us and one I will never forget." Gina Garrett Director of Special Events What is your favorite college sport to follow? Football. What is your favorite pro sport to follow? Football. Some plays are so finessed and beautiful. What is your favorite sport to play? Volleyball. I can still hit it over the net pretty fast…it’s truly about teamwork and it involves a lot of yelling. Since you began working at UCLA, what sport have you gotten to like that you never thought you would like? Gymnastics. So much happens in all parts of the arena floor. What is your favorite kind of music? Favorite group, band, or musician? I revere the standards of Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, Social Distortion while appreciating the new sounds of We Were Promised Jetpacks, Flogging Molly, Cage The Elephant, and am always in the mood for Nina Simone and Rage Against The Machine. Where would you like to travel to that you’ve never been to before? Eastern Europe. Cat person or dog person? DOG ALL THE WAY. We have the best dog now and I want another. What was your high school mascot? As Liz Taylor would yell out: “GLAAAADIATOR!” Unique fact about yourself? I can make an impromptu haiku about anything: “question me you do/answers I give freely now/now please go away.” And… I like to use ellipses (…) in many of my documents and correspondences. A select group of donors, architects, UCLA Athletics legends, and department administrators gathered to view the ceremonial beam raising. Before the beam was put in place high up on what will be the third floor of the building, all in attendance—including the construction detail who have been diligently working to complete the project—signed the beam. Speakers, including Chancellor Gene Block, Director of Athletics Dan Guerrero, and UCLA Football Head Coach Jim Mora, expressed their appreciation for the support and generosity of those who helped make this building a reality. There are still naming opportunities available at all levels. For a unique opportunity to be a part of the Wasserman Football Center, you can fund a seat in the Terry and Andrea Donahue Auditorium for a donation of $5,000. Your name will be recognized on one of the auditorium seats and is a way to not only show your support for UCLA Football but to have your name forever associated with the new Wasserman Football Center. This is a wonderful way to be a permanent part of the new auditorium and football center. If you are interested in naming opportunities for the Wasserman Football Center, please call 310-206-3302, email [email protected]. SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARDS Student-Athlete Academic Achievements The 10th Annual UCLA Scholar-Athlete Banquet took place last month on May 2 in Covel Commons. Sponsored by the late Rose Gilbert in memory of her daughter Maggie Gilbert, this annual banquet honors UCLA’s top scholar-athletes with awards ranging from highest cumulative Grade Point Averages (GPAs) to Bruin leadership tributes. The most prestigious award, Scholar-Athlete of the Year, was presented to the male and female graduating seniors with the highest cumulative GPA: Cross Country/Track & Field’s Sean Davis and Swimmer Arlyn Upshaw. Equally impressive were the awardees of the Athletic Director’s Academic Excellence Award, presented to those student-athletes who were named to the Director’s Honor Roll (3.0 GPA or higher) every quarter they were enrolled at UCLA. Those honors went to Sean Davis, Arlyn Upshaw, as well as Jake Reeves (Men’s Volleyball), Paige Cheung, Alice White, and Logan Warwick (Rowing), Katie Kinnear and Rachel Owen (Swim-Dive), Kelly Brooks (Track & Field), Kyle McPhillips (Women’s Tennis), Keenan Pierandozzi-Howes (Baseball), and Julie Consani, Rachel Inouye and Kamila Tan (Beach Volleyball and Women’s Volleyball). The UCLA All-Academic Team, comprised of the student-athletes with the highest cumulative GPA in each sport, was awarded to 23 standouts. This year’s overall GPA of the All-Academic Team was 3.65. Other honors awarded include the Bruin Leadership Award, the Maggie Gilbert Academic Achievement Award, the Rose Gilbert Courage and Character Award, and the AS2 “S.U.C.C.E.S.S.” Award. For more information about these awards and UCLA Athletics’ Graduation Success Rates, please call the Academics and Student Services Office at 310-825-7057.

Summer Reminders: Housing

Summer is a transitional time for many UCLA student-athletes.

Director’s Dinner – May 9, 2016 As a thank you to Wooden Athletic Fund donors at the Director's Circle and Wooden Benefactorlevels for the 2015-16 year, UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero and his wife Anne Mariewere hosts to UCLA Athletics’ most generous donors at the annual Director's Dinner on May 9th.

"I am a Political Science major from Newport Beach, California. Thanks to you, this has been a special season for us and one I will never forget."

What is your favorite college sport to follow? Football. What is your favorite pro sport to follow? Football. Some plays are so finessed and beautiful. What is your favorite sport to play? Volleyball. I can still hit it over the net pretty fast…it’s truly about teamwork and it involves a lot of yelling.Since you began working at UCLA, what sport have you gotten to

like that you never thought you would like? Eastern Europe.Cat person or dog person? DOG ALL THE WAY. We have the best dog now and I want another. What was your high school mascot? As Liz Taylor would yell out: “GLAAAADIATOR!” Unique fact about yourself? I can make an impromptu haiku about anything: “question me you do/answers I give freely now/now please go away.” And… I like to use ellipses (…) in many of my documents and correspondences.

Wasserman Football Center Topping Out Ceremony – May 17, 2016 On a bright and sunny Tuesday morning last month, UCLA Athletics hosted its Topping Out Ceremony for the Wasserman Football Center. “Topping out” is a term used that is the traditional placing of the last beam atop a structure during its construction; in this case, it was the last beam placed within the Wasserman Football Center’s infrastructure.

Student-Athlete Academic Achievements

The 10th Annual UCLA Scholar-Athlete Banquet took place last month on May 2 in Covel Commons.
