Principals Report
Congratulations to our new school leaders, Captains Jacqui Gray and James Burrows, and Vice Captains Sam Bezzina, Cameron Bysouth, Stephanie Martin and Sophie O’Shannessy. They will be enthusiastic ambassadors for our school and outstanding role models for our students.
This time of year is always a mixed blessing for students and their teachers, because we start the process of saying farewell to our seniors. For students this is arguably the most important time of their school lives, with the Higher School Certificate fast approaching and the adult decisions that come with no longer being at school. It is a time of hard work, celebration, and transition into the world of work or tertiary education. But there’s always a touch of sadness for both students and staff. While we are proud of our seniors and wish them all the successes they deserve, we will be sorry to see them go.
Our first farewell to Year 12 will take place during the Formal Assembly on Thursday September 23rd
, at 2pm. Celebrations will continue at the Social that night and we look forward to seeing as many senior students as possible. Our formal farewell will take place at the Leavers’ Dinner in November, when the pressure of the exams will be over and we can all celebrate a job well done.
This week we also celebrate our other achievers at the Formal Assembly. I have been kept very busy signing certificates and am particularly pleased with the number of Gold, Silver, Bronze and School Awards I have seen. Some students have been very busy indeed, judging by the stacks they have brought me. Well done!
As you can see from the contents of this newsletter, we continue to lead a rich and varied life here at Coomealla. From sporting success (Under 15s Swan Shield) to academic success (Tournament of Minds) and cultural experiences (Nagahama Exchange Visit), students certainly have enjoyed a wide range of activities to engage them.
NAPLAN results have arrived and our teachers are conducting some detailed analysis into school-wide patterns and the learning profiles of individual students. This will enable us to provide targeted assistance and to adjust faculty and classroom programs to suit our needs. One encouraging statistic was that our Year 7 cohort scored above regional means in every measure, while Year 9 scored about region in all but two. A more detailed report will be provided in our next newsletter.
On a personal note, I would like to thank our wonderful staff and the many supportive and cooperative students and parents/carers who have contributed to the school in so many positive ways during the last four weeks. Mr Scotton will return as Principal from the start of next term.

Year 9 DER Laptop Upgrade
The DER Program wishes to carry out an upgrade of the Lenovo Mini 10 Laptops supplied to year 9 students,
commonly known as the ―Blue Laptops‖. Part of this upgrade will strengthen the laptop screen to reduce the
likelihood of damage.
The full upgrade will include.
Installing a strengthening bracket behind the screen. Testing of DER supplied barcode scanner Installing a firmware upgrade to the LG batteries Validation of serial number and RFD number
DER subcontractors will arrive at Coomealla at the start of WEEK 2 OF TERM 3 to complete the upgrade.
To allow the work to take place IT IS ESSENTIAL that ALL YEAR 9 LAPTOPS ARE RETURNED TO THE SCHOOL TSO NO LATER THAN WEEK 1 OF TERM 3. The sooner you get your laptop handed in, the sooner it will be returned to you.

On Saturday the 12th of September 10
Japanese exchange students flew into
Mildura airport accompanied by three of their
teachers to start off the 2010 exchange
program. All the host families were waiting in
excitement to meet their billets and start
their week of new experiences and fun. We
welcomed them with banners and presents
and then took our billets home to settle in
and have a rest before a big week.
The week was action packed with many different Australian activities such as, a houseboat tour, visiting
a station, going to the sand hills, painting boomerangs, visiting Buronga Public School, making scones,
listening to dreamtime stories and lots more.
The week flew by so quickly and we all made so
many new friends that we hope we will keep in touch
with. On Friday the 17th of September sadly it was
time for them to leave and there certainly were a
few tears. After they left they headed for Sydney
for a few days before they flew home to Japan.
We hope to see them all soon!

The SRC are once again supporting Footy Colours Day in Aid of Children with Cancer.
This year we celebrated the Footy day over two days, Tuesday September 21 and
Wednesday September 22. The whole school was invited to come dressed in their
favourite footy colours.
During lunch on the first day we held a pie eating competition. Eight people volunteered
to eat a meat pie as fast as they could as they were being timed. The winner of our
‗Pie Eating Competition‘ was Linden Gibbs at 39.22 sec, followed by Catherine Crowley
1.00 mins, with Sam Perry and Riley Russell also timed in the 1 min range. Then Harleigh
Ussher, Callum Mackie and Mrs Barker were timed in the 2.00 min range ending with
Tamika Peterson.
The longest football kick competition was held out on the oval. Anyone could have a go
and have as many goes in the time available. Our boys who kicked well were: Daniel
Murphy Clark the winner, followed by Scott Linklater and then Attilio Mezzatessa. A few
girls had a go and Sarah Clothier was definitely our winner, followed by Mrs Barker then
Emily Duck and Sarah Watts.
Wednesday lunch, was time to have a friendly ‗Touch Footy‘ match between students and
teachers. Ms Frances, Mr Raso, Mr Doyle, Mr Dicker and Matt Gee vs senior students:
James Burrows, Lachie Murdoch, Jordan Wade, Jack McLean; the students won 1- 0.
Many students came out to watch and the games were tough. Next time we will have an
afternoon of games.
We collected $93.30 from donation for our fundraiser.

Library News Term 3 Week 10
The Great Reading Race
Many of the 7I English are well along the road
in the reading race activities with some
students already past the 1,000 point mark.
This race will have a little of the ―tortoise and
hare‖ aspect with some students beginning with more difficult texts and finishing with shorter less
difficult texts. The activities completed by students are highlighting some terrific thinking and creative
skills. This week has been a little tricky for checking on progress as the library has been in use for Year
11 exams.
Coomealla Chess Championships
This week students participated in the annual chess championships. Mrs Robyn Heaysman assisted with
the running of the tournament. The tournament comprised of 10 rounds with competitors being matched
with opposition based on the results of their previous round. The overall winner was Jakob Sibbons , sec-
ond place Thomas Cullinan & Equal Third Corey Henderson & Ian McKinnon
