Learning to read the common, high frequency words is a real focus in the junior years as these words are one of the keys to their reading and writing success. Prep A have learnt 25 of the first 100 common words, many children knowing even more. Well done Prep A! I look forward to visiting other grades throughout the year and reporting on the some of their exciting learning achievements. Prep B, I am coming to your next! Illegal Parking We have recently noticed an increase in dangerous and illegal parking to pick up students. The two main areas of concern are 1. The parents parking opposite the school on Jones Road and walking children across this busy road to their cars. This is a NO STANDING ZONE due to the dangerous traffic conditions and obvious safety concerns. 2. Parents parking or pulling in near the school crossing and bus pick up on Mornington Tyabb Road. We have had parents asking children to go to this area and wait for pick up. This is a BUS/NO STANDING ZONE due to its close proximity to the school crossing and is not a safe area for children to be picked up from. These parents are also compromising the safety of the children using the school crossing. Police have been asked to regularly monitor these two areas and will book parents that are illegally parking to ensure the safety of our students and parents. We appreciate that pick-up times can be difficult but considering we have 400 children leaving the school at the one time our pick up processes work reasonably well. We thank the majority of our parents for being patient and for doing the right by: - Picking up at front of the school - Picking up from drive through - Picking up from an agreed spot in a neighbouring street - Walking/riding home - Arriving to pick up closer to 3.45pm when traffic is generally moving more freely Forward Dates March Friday 31 st Easter Hat Parade 9.15am in the hall Friday 31 st Last Day Term 1 2.30pm Dismissal April Tuesday 18 th First Day - Term 2 Thursday 20 th Grades 3 to 6 House Cross Country Tuesday 25 th ANZAC Day Thursday 27 th Grade 4 Westernport SC Youth Week Excursion May Monday 1 st Hats Off Day Tuesday 2 nd School Photos Wednesday 3 rd Mother’s Day Stall Thursday 4 th Crib Point District Cross Country Friday 5 th Mother’s Day Breakfast Tuesday 9 th NAPLAN Grades 3 & 5 Wednesday 10 th NAPLAN Grades 3 & 5 Wednesday 10 th - 12 th Grade 4 Camp Thursday 11 th NAPLAN Grades 3 & 5 Wednesday 17 th - 19 th Grade 5 Camp FREE DRESS DAY FRIDAY 31 ST MARCH. Drive through We are aware that our drive through has weathered and started to develop some large pot holes. We will be having the drive through resurfaced soon, hopefully during the holidays in preparation for our winter weather.

World Greatest Shave

In the last couple of weeks Lachie Williams from 2B participated in the world’s greatest shave. We are really proud of Lachlan who has supported the Leukemia Foundation to raise funds for research and to help people who are experiencing this serious medical condition. Lachie was able to raise almost $617.30 which is a huge effort. Well done Lachlan!

Curriculum Corner In the education system, the knowledge and content taught by teachers is based on the Victorian Curriculum. The Victorian F – 10 sets out what every student should learn during their first eleven years of schooling. The curriculum is a common set of knowledge and skills required by students for life-long learning, social development and active and informed citizenship. The Victorian Curriculum covers the following areas of learning:

LEARNING AREAS CAPABILITIES

The Arts English Health and Physical Education The Humanities – including Civics and Citizenship, Economics and Business, Geography, History Languages Mathematics Science Technologies (including design and technologies and digital technologies

Critical and Creative Thinking Ethical Intercultural Personal and Social

What is extra-curricular? Extra-Curricular activities are defined as activities, events or programs offered by the school that are not directly related to the academic learning of the students. They are activities that enhance our students current learning. At Tyabb Primary School we pride ourselves in our range of extra-curricular activities offered to the students throughout their seven years with us. One such activity occurred on Monday 27th March as outlined below.

YOUNG LEADERS CONFERENCE Our school captains – Zoe and Miller, our JSC representatives – Maddison and Tyler and our House Captains – Samantha, Luca, Lainie, Ned, Georgia, Jagg, Harriet and Deagan all met Mr Fitt and Ms Grinsted at Frankston station at 7:00am to travel into the city on the train to attend the Young Leaders Conference that is held annually by the Halogen Foundation. During the day we listened to a range of guest speakers who were promoting the importance and development of leadership skills. Some of the guest speakers were: Matt Cosgrove – Matt is an author/illustrator who talked about how much determination and resilience he had to have to make it into his dream job. He spoke about the downfalls and the importance of getting back up again to ensure you follow your dreams and achieve success. He is currently writing a series of books called: Epic Tale Fails.

Tyabb Primary School Bulletin:30th March, 2017 Page 5 ‘From little things, big things grow’

Jade Hamiester – Jade is a 15 year old adventurist who was probably the most inspirational speaker on the day. She spoke to us about the importance of believing in yourself and giving things a go even if you feel you may not succeed. Jade was announced as Young Adventurer of the year in 2016 – she is the youngest female to ski to the North Pole. Josh Richards – Josh is also an explorer who is involved in the Mars One Community. He is one of the remaining 700 candidates for the Mars One project, reduced from an initial 200,000 applicants. Josh spoke enthusiastically about wanting to achieve his dream of travelling to and living on Mars and never returning!! He has wanted to be an astronaut since he was 7 years old and is still forging ahead with his dream. As well as listening to the inspirational speakers, there was other entertainment happening during both snack and lunch break. The most favourite activity was the silent disco – this is where you wear headphones and dance and sing to the song. It was a great activity that a majority of the students experienced – it was funny watching students all jump up and down and shout out at various times, oblivious to what they looked and sounded like!! At the end of the day the dreams of all students were fulfilled with a stop at an amazing ice-cream shop What else could a grade 6 student ask for other than a double scoop of ice-cream?? We then continued our stroll down Southbank only to be caught in an absolute downpour – what a sight, 12 Tyabb students and 2 teachers drenched, but still eating their ice-creams!! It was a great day. Tyabb PS have been attending the Young Leaders Conference for many years and it is a highlight for our leaders to experience.

"Working together to better our school for the benefit of

our children."

Over the past 5 years funds raised through the PFA and

the school community have gone back into our school by

buying new classroom readers, student ipads, building up

our science program including robotics, new playgrounds

for specific grades and the Oak Tree

redevelopment. Looking ahead with funds raised in 2017

and beyond we are hoping to resurface the caged

basketball court and investigate improving the oval and

running/walking track. If you have any thoughts or ideas

on what or where you would like to see developed in and

around our school then please send me an email at

[email protected]

A big thank you to everyone who donated Easter eggs and

bunnies towards our raffle fundraiser and also to those

who purchased raffle tickets or made a donation. We will

have a final figure towards the end of the week and will

let you know in next terms Bulletin.

Also Traditional Hot Cross Buns are still the favourite

with orders for Apple & Cinnamon close behind, Thank

you to all those who ordered through the school with $2

from each packet coming back to us. We hope you

enjoyed them and thanks to Bakers Delight Hastings for

the idea.

HARMONY DAY CELEBRATIONS

Tyabb celebrated Harmony Day by dressing up in a splash

of orange to celebrate cultural diversity within Australia.

Harmony Day is a day for all Australians to celebrate

cultural diversity. We all have different cultural

influences within our families and we can learn and build

on this knowledge and understanding to celebrate our

multicultural nation.

This week our students were engaged in a whole school

activity relating to this year’s Harmony Day theme of

‘everyone belongs’. Students shared their stories of where

their families have come from. This was achieved through

mapping, labeling their countries of origin and sharing

their stories of what cultural elements have influenced

their family’s lives. This could be in the form of food,

traditions to language spoken at home. Our students

traced and cut out their own hands to create a Harmony

Day tree with drawings, pictures and words of the cultural

elements which have influenced their family. This tree is

located in the BER building, so please take a look as

Tyabb have such diverse cultural stories.
