INSIDE provides teachers and students with a behind-the-curtain look at the artists, the company and the art form of this production. Use this resource to learn more about the artists on the New Victory stage, how far they’ve traveled and their inspiration for creating this show. Closer look at me and my shadow

where In the world Is me and my shadowFrom?

• Patch Theatre Company first began creating theater for young kids and families in Adelaide in 1972.

• ME AND MY SHADOW didn’t begin with a script. Rather, the creative team started with the idea that they wanted "Light" to be a character, and they experimented with shadow, paper bags, large sheets of paper and water. The story evolved out of this devising and exploration period.

• A Chinese legend traces Shadow Theater back to 121 BCE (Before Common Era), when a court musician entertained the Emperor by creating a shadow play of his wife with a screen and a flame.

A young girl befriends her shadow in this whimsical and charming story about friendship. Using light, paper, and some stage magic, Australia’s renowned Patch Theatre Company (Pigs, Bears and Billy Goats Gruff, New Vic 2008), brings this delightful production to life on the New Victory stage. ME AND MY SHADOW will ignite imaginations and tickle everyone's fancy, your's and the young theatergoers in your classroom.

• The capital of South Australia, Adelaide is rich with culture, and holds the reputation of being Australia’s arts capital.

• Australia is home to the kangaroo! These fast, furry animals can hop around on their two legs and swim, but, interestingly enough, they can’t hop backwards.

vIsUal theaterVisual Theater often incorporates puppets, mime, dance, theater, shadow theater, circus, mask and other forms to communicate a story or a feeling to the audience, without words. Visual Theater is not completely silent; it often contains elements of sound and music to enhance the storytelling. However, the emphasis is on creating a theatrical experience that relies on visual language rather than text.

Prior to exploring ME AND MY SHADOW with your students, find out how much they already know about shadows and light. In addition, allow them to explore the themes of friendship and collaboration. Use the Prior Knowledge questions below and the Creativity Page handout (next page) to get a sense of your students’ understanding of the art forms and themes in the show. You may be surprised by how much they know already, and in the process of exploring these areas, you’ll spark their curiosity to see the show and enhance their anticipation of the trip.
