High Bridge is set for another new name with whispers of a Spanish tapas bar joining some of the city’s coolest kitchens, bars and culture spots which already occupy the street.
Already home to The Stand, Dabbawal, Pleased to Meet You, Mr Tilly’s, Laneway & Co, and Patrick Forster’s Barber Shop, planning has now been submitted by Kaltur Restaurant to transform the former home of End Clothing into a Spanish food, wine and cocktail bar. Watch this space!

You will have noticed a jauntiness about some Newcastle citizens in the last fortnight and more football shirts are re-appearing after their summer (sorry- Level 2 heat warning) shut down.
The darkened limbs emanating from them are either brown from a foreign holiday or rusty from a UK version. Either way, they are swinging confidently and the days until kick-off are anticipated rather than feared.
It’s amazing how the appointment Rafa Benitez has brought such a transformation in expectation, even though he starts from a lower league. Perhaps, just as sticky weather needs some rain to act as a clearing cough, we needed a drop in leagues to provide the equivalent. Football, like weather forecasting, isn’t an exact science, but at least with football you don’t need a government prodnose to tell you how to enjoy it.
All that remains is to enjoy the next nine months and watch my tan turn to rust; hopefully my dreams don’t go the same [email protected]
We took the team meeting out to the grass this morning. @newcastlecastle

The Handlebards’ bicycle-powered shows have received rave reviews, and they’re bringing their quick-witted and fast-paced production of Romeo & Juliet to Great North Museum: Hancock, in a hilarious and utterly barmy show.
The four actors – who carry all their set, props and costumes around the UK on bicycles – will perform the tragic tale of two star-crossed lovers with live music accompaniment. Unique, hilarious and, possibly, saddle sore.Great North Museum: Hancock, £10 greatnorthmuseum.org.uk

WOMAN ABOUTTOON
Taking a tour of the city with Newcastle-born
crime writer LJ Ross
Where do you get your coffee?I have a soft spot for Blakes on Grey Street. My mum used to take me there for cream teas and milkshakes when I was little and it makes me feel nostalgic every time. They do a mean full English breakfast too!
Favourite theatre? You can’t beat the Theatre Royal for atmosphere. It’s a lovely, grand old building and there is always such a good selection of plays and musicals. It’s a great way to encourage children and teenagers to get into theatre too.
Where do you eat out?I love Broad Chare down by the Quayside. It’s in the Michelin Guide and does a fab range of Northumbrian classics.
What about shopping? My favourite is still Fenwick. I love the Christmas window display and the building itself forms part of the history of the city. Plus, they have a truffles counter!
And clearing your head?It depends on my mood, but on a misty day I love to walk along the Quayside and look at the bridges over the Tyne. They’re a proud reminder of the city’s industrial history.ljrossauthor.comLJ Ross’ new DCI Ryan mystery, Angel, which is set in Newcastle, is out on Aug 26

School’s outSummer’s here and there’s a lot to cram into six weeks, so we rounded up the younger members of the NE1 team and asked them where to head.
In the marketThe street food at the Grainger Market is amazing, with something for everyone. Slice is fab for fresh-made pizza, and watching the guys make crêpes fresh at La Petite Crêperie is fun. Make sure you fit in a trip to Kandy Box for a treat on the way home.
OutdoorsSkateboarding in Exhibition Park is brilliant in the sun. Little kids like feeding the ducks in Leazes Park while we like the Vueling Quayside Seaside for volleyball and supply of buckets and spades, plus Riley’s Fish Shack.
ShoppingWrestling fans like Phil Nelson’s Wrestling Store, comic book fans go for Travelling Man and Forbidden Planet, and there’s loads of stuff to try out on the toy floor at Fenwick.
LunchWe think Blake’s does the best sandwiches, the café at Geek Retreat is brilliant and the Bento boxes at Osaka are fab. There’s a great atmosphere at Panis Café and at The Botanist.
The number one choice…Newcastle Castle has some amazing exhibitions and the summer events diary includes everything from learning to be a knight to exploring your inner Hobbit.
PokémonIf the kids (and you) are obsessed with catching ‘em all you’re in luck. The city is full of Pokéstops and you can find good ones on Grey Street, at Old Eldon Square and on the Quayside.

Newcastle was ablaze with colour as Newcastle Pride brought revellers to the city to celebrate LGBT culture.
The record-breaking event, which was sponsored by NE1 and saw more than 73,000 visitors enjoy free music and entertainment over one big weekend - featured entertainment and music from 5ive and M People’s Heather Small.
After a pulse-quickening 5K run on the Town Moor on the Friday, more than 12,500 people thronged the city for the annual parade on Saturday followed by the big event featuring music, food and drink, and family entertainment across the weekend.
With last year’s festival boosting the North East economy by more than £9m, this year’s event exceeded expectations, says Sean Bullick, Chief Executive of NE1 Ltd. “This is the third year NE1 has supported Newcastle Pride and it always has the most amazing atmosphere. It’s getting bigger and better each year and 73,000 people from all over the world had a fantastic time as well as giving the local economy a huge boost. We look forward to 100,000 visitors next year!”northern-pride.com

OUSEBURN
21 WWW.GETINTONEWCASTLE.CO.UK
ADULTSThe Ouseburn is bursting at the seams with great places to have a pint or two, enjoy great beer, inventive pub grub and live music.
The Cluny is the largest venue here, boasting two spaces for live music and there’s something on here most days.
Up the hill, The Cumberland Arms is the place to be for folk fans, while The Tyne Bar’s legendary outdoor stage hosts blues bands on Sundays.
The Free Trade has possibly the best view over the River Tyne and its patio is a little suntrap.
Hungry? Pop to the Tanners Arms for a mega burger, Ernest for fantastic salads and flatbreads, The Cook House for locally sourced culinary wonders and Artisan at the Biscuit Factory and The Factory Kitchen for modern British cuisine in an arty setting. Meanwhile, at Northern Print, you can learn a new skill or watch an expert at work.
There’s nothing better on a sunny day than a stroll along the Quayside to Newcastle’s vibrant creative hub, the Ouseburn Valley. With so much to do for kids and adults alike, here’s our handy guide to the best of the area…
Ouseburn walkabout
OUSEBURN
KIDSThere’s loads of entertainment for the kids in the Ouseburn area, and at the centre of the valley the wonderful Ouseburn Farm should be your first stop. Its café serves scrummy sarnies and cakes, and youngsters will love visiting the pigs, bunnies, sheep and goats.
More animal magic is to be had at Stepney Bank Stables, where horse riding lessons are available in the indoor and outdoor arenas, plus there are lovely rides to be had in the surrounding area.
For older kids who like a bit of adventure, the Victoria Tunnel tour is an exciting look through the city’s history. Built to transport coal from the city to the coast, the tunnel has also been an air-raid shelter and a sewer.
Seven Stories, the centre for children’s books, has something for all ages with regular storytelling sessions, world-class exhibitions, visiting authors and workshops galore. ouseburn.co.uk
