where In the world Is BOB MARLEY'S THREE LITTLE BIRDS From?

Here are a few facts about BOB MARLEY'S THREE LITTLE BIRDS to familiarize you with the show and build excitement around your upcoming visit:

• BOB MARLEY'S THREE LITTLE BIRDS is a musical theater production based on the children’s book of the same title written by Bob Marley's daughter, Cedella.

• Adventure Theatre MTC, the company that produced BOB MARLEY'S THREE LITTLE BIRDS, produces theater for children and their families. The company also offers pre-professional musical theater and theater training for young actors.

• The popularization of reggae, a style of music that originated in Jamaica and blends the blues, calypso and rock 'n' roll, is attributed to Bob Marley.

• Among the many accomplishments that Bob Marley achieved in his short life: he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994; his song “One Love” was designated Song of the Millennium by the BBC; and, in 2001, he was awarded The Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

• Bob Marley was born on February 6th, 1945. The New Vic will be celebrating what would have been his 69th birthday during the run of this production.

• Bob Marley had many children, one of whom, a boy named Ziggy, is the namesake for the show's lead character.

Mama says "breathe easy," but Ziggy's afraid to leave the house. He's too busy worrying about tropical storms, evil spirits and steering clear of that sneaky, hair-snatching Duppy! But with the help of Dr. Bird and his feathered friends, Ziggy's reminded in soothing six-part harmony that "every little thing gonna be all right." A jammin' musical featuring the timeless music and lyrics of Bob Marley and based on the children's book by his daughter Cedella, BOB MARLEY'S BOB MARLEY'S THREE LITTLE BIRDS shares the legendary Reggae artist's message of peace and love with a new generation of songbirds.

• Glen Echo is home to Glen Echo Park, an arts and cultural center that offers year-round creative and recreational activities for the region’s diverse population.

• Maryland is a state with a rich history of appreciation for the arts. When Baltimore was charged with naming its new football team in 1996, the town chose the name "Ravens" after Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous work, The Raven, that has a strong central theme of undying devotion. The poet spent much of his life in Baltimore.

mUsICal theater is a type of theatrical performance where song and dance are used to help tell a story. In BOB MARLEY'S THREE LITTLE BIRDS, Adventure Theater MTC uses Bob Marley’s music to weave together the story of a little boy overcoming his fears and worries. Many other musical theater shows have incorporated the work of popular artists, two of the most popular being Mamma Mia with music by ABBA and Jersey Boys with music by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. BOB MARLEY'S THREE LITTLE BIRDS is distinct in that it is designed specifically for young audiences.

reggae is a style of music popularized in America during the 1960s - its biggest star being Bob Marley. The music was considered a “ragged” style of dance music, lending itself to the name reggae. The style of music was influenced by american rhythm and blues, rock ‘n’ roll, and a calypso beat. Bob Marley helped draw the association between reggae music and Rastafarian beliefs. When his band rose to critical acclaim in the 1970s, he sang about his feelings regarding political oppression, preaching a message of peace, love and unity.

Prior to exploring BOB MARLEY'S THREE LITTLE BIRDS with your students, find out how much they already know about musical theater and Bob Marley. In addition, allow them to explore the ideas of fears and optimism. Use the Prior Knowledge questions below, and the Creativity Page handout (next page) to get a sense of your students’ understanding of the art forms and themes in the show. You may be surprised by how much they know already, and in the process of exploring these areas, you’ll spark their curiosity about the show and enhance their anticipation for the trip.
