IDEA is a tool limited to investigational use only. Because magnetic reso-nance image quality is fundamentally dependent on the timing and parameters of the acquisition sequence, the user must assure sufficient testing of clinical utility for any and all new sequences developed for use on humans. In addition, it is possible to inadvertently create and incorrectly label images with se-quences developed using IDEA. All labeling of images from investigational sequences must be verified by the user on phantoms before use on humans. Examinations performed using sequences generated with this package should be for investigational purposes only, and should not be used for diagnosis with-out corroborative examination using SIEMENS standard sequences. 0.0

Installation Guide General Requirements

General Requirements A.1

System requirementsA.1

The minimum hardware requirements for running IDEA are: A.1

Pentium 1 GHz

1024 MB RAM

The minimum software requirements for running IDEA are: A.1

Windows XP Service Pack 21

A HTML browser such as Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE)

Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0, Enterprise Edition (with Service Pack 5).

For the installation, administrator rights are required on your system. A.1

The approximate disk space required for an installation is 1.6 GB. A.1

Working with IDEA requires additional space; the amount depends on thenumber of projects under development and the simulations being run. If anumber must be specified, 10 GB should be sufficient. These minimum sys-tem requirements should not be taken as a recommendation when consider-ing buying a new workstation. A.1

Network driver A.1

For internal communication between IDEA processes, AT command handlingis used. Therefore it is necessary that a network driver is installed and the net-work has been configured. This is also valid if your system is not connectedto a real network. A.1

C++ compilerA.1 Developing pulse sequences or applications within syngo-MR requires a C++compiler. This compiler is not included on the IDEA distribution DVD, but mustbe purchased separately. IDEA is validated with the A.1

Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 Enterprise Edition (1998). A.1

On a stand-alone PC, the use of an edition or version of the MS C++ compilerother than this recommended one is at the customer’s risk. A.1

1. Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2. No other Windows ver-sion is supported.

Installation Guide General Requirements

A.1

Additional software A.1

There is some additional software on the IDEA distribution DVD: A.1

Microsoft Visual C++ Service Pack 5 Additionally, the Microsoft Visual C++ Service Pack 5 is required1. On theIDEA DVD, you can find it in the directory \Download\VS60SP5, but it canalso be obtained from the Microsoft service or for free by downloading itfrom the internet (www.microsoft.com/downloads). Please note that youmust not mix up different languages for the MS-DEV Studio and the MS-DEV Service Pack.

Info-ZIP compression utilityNOTE: IDEA is packaged on this DVD using Info-ZIP's compression utility. The installation program uses UnZip to read zip files from the DVD. Info-ZIP's software (Zip, UnZip and related utilities) is free and can be obtainedas source code or executables from various anonymous-ftp sites, includingftp.uu.net:/pub/archiving/zip/*.The complete, unmodified package can be found on the IDEA DVD in thefile \IDEA\install\ExternalPackages\Zip+Unzip.zip.

Cygnus GNU Unix toolThis software originaly comes from http://sources.redhat.com/cygwin/.

Tornado g++ cross compiler from x86 to MPCU(X86)This GNU compiler has been ported by Wind River Systems Inc. (http://www.windriver.com/index.html).

Note that this software is not part of the IDEA product and that it is not sold, but distributed for free. A.1

Baseline A.1 For every NUMARIS version, the matching IDEA version must be used. Forexample, for NUMARIS VA12A, use IDEA for VA12A; IDEA VA12B will notwork. Never try to mix different versions! A.1

Every NUMARIS package has a baseline label which identifies the build ofthis package, e.g. N4_VB13A_LATEST_20060408. It specifies both the soft-ware version and the date (in a yyyymmdd format). A.1

The baseline label of the IDEA package is printed on the distribution DVD. Itis also stored in the file DVD:\baseline_standalone.txt. A.1

1. Until version VA15A, service pack 3 had been requested.

General Information Installation Guide

The baseline label of the NUMARIS software on the scanner can be found outby Help → Info -> General

A.1

Caveat: A Numaris version sold under a marketing name (such as syngo MR2002B) can belong to different revisions (VA21A, VA21B, VA21C) and hencebelong to different baselines (N4_VA21A_LATEST_20020801,N4_VA21B_LATEST_20021003 etc.). These revisions are different baselinesand must not be mixed. A.1

Installation Guide General Requirements

A.1

Installation modes A.1

There are two different installation modes for IDEA: A.1

Stand-alone InstallationIDEA can be installed on any standard PC or Laptop. This offers the pos-sibility to develop applications without the need to sit in front of theNUMARIS console. This installation does not require syngo or NUMARISand needs about 1.6 GB of disk space.Details may be found on Page A.2–2.

Archive InstallationThis mode is reserved for SIEMENS in-house developers who haveaccess to the Clearcase archive. This mode sets only up the registry butdoes not install any files.Details may be found on Page A.3–2.

If the installation should be aborted by the user, it can be restarted or repeatedat any time without any problems. A.1

Update IDEA A.1 If there already exists an old IDEA installation with another baseline on yourstand-alone PC, it does not have to be uninstalled prior to the new installation, because the new multi_idea framework will take care of the different ver-sions. A.1

Unless the required version of the Microsoft Developer Studio or the Cygnustools is also subject to change, there is no need for the deinstallation and rein-stallation of this software package. A.1

After an IDEA update (i.e. a change of the baseline), it is necessary to recom-pile all your sequences. A.1

WARNING

The baseline labels of IDEA and the NUMARIS installation on the scanner must be identical! Different baselines must

never be mixed.

If you have different baselines on your scanner and your stand-alone IDEA, never take an application from your PC

to your scanner or vice versa.

General Information Installation Guide

Uninstall IDEAA.1 This is the way to uninstall IDEA: If any IDEA applications have been written, they should be saved in a directory outside of IDEA now. Your IDEA stuff isnot included in the save set created by the service backup! Start multi_ideaand enter the DELETE command. A.1

This will remove the complete IDEA subtree including all user-created sourcefiles. A.1

If you want to install a new version of IDEA directly afterwards, take care toupdate the environment variables prior to the installation, e.g. by calling theSystem Properties Environment window or by logging out. A.1

Installation Guide Installation of MS-DEV

Installation of MS-DEV A.2

This chapter describes the installation of IDEA on a stand-alone standardWindowsXP personal computer. No Numaris software is required for thisinstallation. Sequences can be developed and the image reconstruction withraw data from the scanner can be simulated on the PC. A.2

The installation takes place in two parts: A.2

The installation of the Microsoft Developer Studio (MS-DEV & MS-DEVService Pack 5)

The installation of the Integrated Development Environment for Applica-tions (IDEA) itself

A.2

Note: Administrator rights are required (both for the C++ compiler installationand the IDEA installation itself). A.2

A.2

There are three substantial deviations from the default Microsoft installation:A.2

The root directory is C:\MSVStudio6.

The MFC template libraries must be installed.

The libraries for unicode support must be installed.

A.2

There are two different ways to install the Microsoft Developer Studio: A.2

a) You can use the MS-DEV CD ROM directly purchased by the customer. Then please follow the instructions in the next subsection "Microsoft CD"(Page A.2–4). A.2

b) You could also use the Siemens CD with a pre installed version. Pleasenote that this DVD must only be installed on one system according to thelicensing terms. If you have this CD, please go to the subsection "SiemensCD" (Page A.2–5). A.2
