The inter- disciplinary profile addresses the growing need for engineers, who can combine knowledge and skills from different areas – in particular information and communication technology (ICT), economics, orga- nization theories, and user perspectives. Innovative Communication Technologies and Entrepreneurship (ICTE) 1 Master of Science (MSc) in Engineering (offered in Copenhagen & Aalborg)

Innovative Communication Technologies and Entrepreneurship (ICTE) is a new education at AalborgUniversity, which was launched Sept. 2009.

It is an application-oriented program, which combines a technical knowledge of communication tech-nologies and converging media with innovation, creativity, market, and user perspectives. The inter-disciplinary profile addresses the growing need for engineers, who can combine knowledge and skillsfrom different areas – in particular information and communication technology (ICT), economics, orga-nization theories, and user perspectives.

The program is offered by the center for Communication, Media and Information Technologies (CMI)and the Center for TeleInFrastructure (CTIF). CMI is located in Copenhagen, where we share thecampus with several other educations from Aalborg University and with the Engineering College ofCopenhagen (IHK). CTIF is based in Aalborg and includes units in Copenhagen (CMI), Rome (Italy),Kolkata (India) and Yokosuka (Japan).

It has two specializations with separate intake: “Converging Media Technologies” is offered in Copen-hagen, and “Telecom Infrastructures” is offered in Aalborg. Each of these is further divided in sub-specializations (see Fig. 1), and the detailed structure and curriculum of these are described in the

following pages.

tion for the future Internet, mobile communication, and broadcast (radio & TV) platforms. You will gaina thorough understanding of the new technologies and their potential, and you will learn how to trans-form this knowledge into innovative services, applications, and solutions, targeting specific needs inpeople ʼ s lives. The program will take you to the forefront of the latest developments within information, communication and media technologies in a global perspective, and you will learn to understand thesocial, commercial, regulatory, and ethical framework for their use.

The curriculum has been developed in collaboration with leading IT and communication companiessuch as: Nokia, Motorola, Terma, Litepoint, Ericsson, Denmark ʼ s Radio and The Association of DanishIndustries (ITEK), and there are good opportunities for setting up student projects in cooperation withindustry partners. Furthermore, the program is part of CTIF ʼ s global education activities.

Teaching

The teaching varies between lectures and problem-oriented project work in groups. Projects must in-clude both a technical solution to a practical problem and organizational and economic considerations, which are necessary for the solution to be applied in practice.

These are some of the areas you will learn about:• new mobile technologies• planning and development of telecommunication infrastructure• development of mobile applications• user-friendly solutions and services• innovation, business development and business models• use of ICT in companies and organizations• service security• cognitive radio and networks• telemedicine

Job opportunities

You will be able to use your skills for development of new concepts, services, and solutions, or for an-alysis, strategy and business development. And with your broader profile you could act as a link be-tween development and sales and marketing functions. The possibilities are countless!

Among the potential target companies and industries are the major companies within the IT, telecom-munications, and media sectors, equipment manufacturers, infrastructure companies, content provid-ers, service providers, consultancies, training and research institutions and public administration.

You can learn more about the education and the curriculum on the websites of CMI and CTIF:www.cmi.aau.dk and www.ctif.aau.dk . You are also welcome to contact the program coordinators:

Copenhagen: Associate professor Henning Olesen, [email protected] Aalborg: Associate professor Jens Myrup Pedersen, [email protected] .

What do the companies say?

"Convergence is more relevant than ever. We witness how well-established scientific areas likeInternet technologies, telecommunications and broadcast media melt together and define a wholenew palette of technologies and business opportunities – both when it comes to traditional andOpen Source platforms. Never before have the opportunities for small start-up companies with theright ideas been better. Aalborg University offers an education, which on the one hand gives youthe competences to create and foster innovation in a converging world and on the other gives youthe business competences to get you dressed for success in the commercial world: A unique edu-cation well suited for times of change with plenty of challenges."

S TUDY CURRICULA AND ADMISSION The program consists of 2 specializations with separate intake:

Converging Media Technologies

The objective of this specialization is to give the students a basic understanding of the technologies

behind IT, Communication and Media systems and networks, as well as to provide an understandingof the service architectures that are needed to provide future services and applications. Furthermore, the aim is to give the students the competences to work with (learn, analyze and evaluate) informationand communication technologies (ICT) and media concepts in relation to user needs, social issues, business development and organizations. The students can choose between 3 sub-specializations:Service development, Business development or Service Security .

Telecom Infrastructures

The objective of this specialization is to give the students a comprehensive understanding of telecom-munication infrastructures and the technologies behind them, with a main focus on the new and emer-ging technologies that form the base for future Internet and Mobile communication. The students willgain in-depth understanding of planning, deployment, management, optimization and maintenance oftelecommunication infrastructures, and learn about the needs posed by different applications. Aspectssuch as governmental regulations and privacy issues will also be covered. The students can choose tofocus on either the sub-specialization on cognitive radio or sub-specialization on applications withintelemedicine , two of the most promising areas of R&D in telecommunications for the future.

Admission

In order to be admitted to the MSc program, you must have a bachelor (BSc) degree in IT, computerscience, communication technologies, media technologies, or equivalent qualifications.

Please refer to the general guidelines for application at http://studyguide.aau.dk . Be aware of the Dan-ish rules for tuition fee for non-EU/EEA citizens: http://studyguide.aau.dk/apply/tuition .

The academic year is made up of 2 semesters, which begin around September 1 and February 1.

You can apply for admission in September in Copenhagen and Aalborg, and for admission in Februaryin Copenhagen. The detailed curricula for the September intake are given in the following.

A: September intake (Copenhagen and Aalborg)The first semester consists of mandatory courses only, see Table 1. On the first semester you will ac-quire a deep understanding of platforms, technologies, services and applications, building on compe-tences from your bachelor education.
