Goal of Community Colleges

• The goal of serving students with disabilities is to assist the students to become literate, obtain the necessary skills for employment and economic self-sufficiency, and to transition to postsecondary education and training through career pathways.

Seamless Transitions• Coordinators in Basic Skills are working with

Transition Counselors in K-12 to educate parents of options for community college experience.

• Once enrolled in Basic Skills, community college staff and VR work together to support student.

• Upon completion of community college program, VR takes the lead in employment opportunities.

Adult Basic Education• Adult Basic Education (ABE) is a program

of instruction less than 9.0 grade level (or its equivalent) designed for adults who need to improve their reading, writing, speaking, problem solving, or computation skills to function more effectively in society, on a job, or in the family.

ABLE – Adult Basic Literacy Education (formerly Compensatory

Education)

• 6 ABLE sections that are targeted low, intermediate, high. Class placement is determined by TABE reading scores, and student’s adaptive skills according to our social, emotional, and behavior rubric.(located at our satellite campus)

• Career readiness integrated through Pillows with a Purpose service learning, coffee cart project, and contextualized instruction.

What was Happening on ACC’s Campus…

• Students with intellectual disabilities:- enrolled in “hands-on” curriculum programs- struggling in developmental classes - having to repeat developmental and/or curriculum classes- burning the financial aid bridge - frustration with the academic portion of a class/program- successful with hands-on component - utilizing academic support services (disability and tutoring)

• Need to track students’ progression, retention and completion
