Exploration Camps Summer 2015

Adventures in Mathematics and ReadingThis exciting course will focus on Math and Reading Adventures by boosting basic math and reading skills in a fun way. Learn tricks, play games, explore online resources all while building your confidence in math and reading. See how simple strategies can help with basic facts and learn interactive ways to improve phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills.

Adventures in ArtArt week will be packed with a variety of art activities to inspire and challenge the artist within. Students will get hands-on experience in an array of art media, from clay, to painting, to drawing. Instructor: Darlene Brady

Babysitter CertificateThis camp gives participants a Babysitter Certificate that can be used to show prospective clients that the participant has taken a hands-on structured class for the care of the infant to adolescent child and is certified in Heartsaver CPR. Instructor: Kim Tew

Ballroom DanceThe goal of this class is to introduce students to different styles of basic ballroom dance. Leading and following skills will be developed as students learn new dance steps. Rules in dance etiquette will be part of the lesson plan.

Creative Speaking and WritingLearn to create an impressive presentation that informs, persuades, inspires, and conveys a compelling message. Through practice and feedback, master the techniques for delivering consistent and successful presentations. Create powerful visual aids to add impact, and learn the tools and techniques needed to grab and hold the interest of an audience. Overcome your public speaking fears and gain the confidence to deliver polished presentations of any kind.

CSI: Crime Scene InvestigationExperience the exciting and spellbinding world of crime scene investigations through CSI. CSI brings an incredible learning adventure where students become forensic investigators, solving mysteries through forensic science and technology. Students step into the shoes of a crime scene investigator and learn how to identify and gather evidence. Working together, collect fingerprints and casting of footprints, and use them in hopes of cracking the case.

Culinary Teen BakingA class for students ages 10-15 who share a passion for cooking and possibly a career as a Pastry Chef. Students will prepare various items including sweet and savory appetizers, breads, and desserts. Lunch is included in this camp. Students will need to wear kitchen safe closed toe shoes and an apron or smock.

Culinary Teen CookingA class for students ages 10-15 who share a passion for cooking and possibly a career in Culinary Arts. Students will prepare various items including entrees, appetizers, and desserts. Lunch is included in this camp. Students will need to wear kitchen safe closed toe shoes and an apron or smock.

Entrepreneur Boot CampIn this three-day camp, peers, experts and one-on-one mentors will help entrepreneurial teams refine their business plan and develop an investor presentation and elevator pitch. Mentors introduce a variety of resources, including potential investors. Entrepreneurs can walk away ready to pitch possible backers.

Exercise Activity Day on the Pittsboro TrailThis camp includes exercise activity on the Pittsboro trail as well as an outdoor seminar on how regular exercise helps people to live healthier lives. The days will be filled with motivating interactive activities to show that exercise can be fun. Instructor: Charlene Purcell

Explore and Learn Summer CampThis camp will engage students in learning about nature, the fragile balance of our environment, and interactions with outside surroundings. Several field trips and presentations are planned.Instructor: Andy Upshaw

Four Stories in 4 DaysWe will examine Mystery, Suspense, and Sci-Fi writings on four fun-filled days. Journals will be used to focus on the development of ideas, and photographs, drawings, films, and music will be used to enhance the writing experience. We will discuss our favorite authors and the techniques used to rewrite a story, as well as examine critical thinking strategies and how they can be applied to plot development. Working individually and in small groups, we will create characters, clues, imagery, and mood and be critiqued by the instructor and classmates. End the week by presenting your project to the class. Join us for a summer to remember...a writer's project designed to inspire creativity.

Healthcare Career ExplorationThe goal of this camp is to expose participants to healthcare careers with hands-on activities in Dental Hygiene, Dental Assisting, Nursing, Nursing Assistant, Laboratory Assistant, Medical Assisting, Medical Office Administration, and Veterinary Medical Technology. Participants will participate in animal CPR, blood pressure checks, dental health checks, and much more.

Scholarships are available for the 2015 Summer Youth Enrichment Series (YES).

Mathematics and Reading RefresherYou will be challenged to recall previously learned math concepts, improve on them, and learn new mathematical formulas, and also practice fluency and high-level comprehension techniques while improving reading speeds.

The Singer-Songwriter CourseThis class provides a comprehensive curriculum in the discipline of popular music songwriting. Students will develop skills in melody, harmony, arranging, and lyrics. Study will include what it takes to write a hit song and how to sell and market music in today's world.

Shooting, ball handling, defense, and conditioning will all be covered each day to help develop the skills needed to enjoy the game of basketball at any level.

Football CampThis class is designed to give each individual athlete a solid foundation in the basic football fundamentals needed to excel at his specific position.

Financial Aid WorkshopThe free application for Federal Student Aid is known as FAFSA and it is the first step in making your college dreams a reality. FAFSA is the standard required for federal and state need-based aid and for consideration for many other scholarships and grant opportunities. RoboticsBuild an operating robotic spider…TO KEEP! You will use the same tools that our CCCC students use in building their projects. Learners will test their robot for proper operation, and compete against one another in a robot race. We will provide all the tools and batteries. YES – Youth Enrichment SeriesPOLICY AND PROCEDuRESAll participants in the Summer Youth Enrichment Series (YES) must have an Emergency Medical Form (EMF) and YES registration form on file in the Continuing Education office no later than five days prior to the first day of class. Complete the EMF and YES registration forms by downloading from the CCCC website at www.cccc.edu/yes.

REFuND POLICYStudents who withdraw from a class prior to the start date of the class are eligible to receive a 100% refund. Students withdrawing from a class before the 10% date will receive a 75% refund. Students withdrawing from a class after the 10% consensus date of the course are not eligible for a refund. Refunds will be issued within 3-4 weeks and provided in the form of a check or credit card reimbursement. Call the Student Support Center at (919) 718-7500. BEHAVIOR POLICYAll students are expected to maintain appropriate and respectful behavior while attending YES classes. If a child is disruptive, disrespectful or inappropriate, or jeopardizes the safety of others, parents will be asked to pick up their child. If the behavior continues, staff reserves the right to dismiss the student from class without a refund.

DROP OFF AND PICK uP PROCEDuRES• For the safety of your child, parents/guardians must sign in and out your camp students upon arrival and pick up.• Drop off is no earlier than 30 minutes prior to the class start time.• Pick up is no later than 15 minutes after the end of class. If you arrive laterthan the given 15 minute grace period, it will be an additional $1.00 per minuteuntil your child is picked up.• Payment for late arrivals is due at the time of pick up or charged to your account.

LuNCH AND SNACKS Students enrolled in a morning or afternoon camp will need to supply their own lunch and a drink. All day camps include two break periods and the student will need to bring two snacks as well as lunch and drinks. Water will be available on site for all camp students. All lunch and break times will be supervised.• Campus Dining Services are not available to summer youth participants.• Healthy snacks and water bottle (labeled with student’s name) is encouraged.• Due to allergies, please do not send any snack or product containing nuts.______________________________________________________________
