GLENWOOD HIGH SCHOOL Innovation Opportunity Diversity Success

ISSUE 5 TERM 3 17 July 2013

Welcome News

As you are aware, I am a passionate advocate of public education, especially of our school. I have been proudly vocal in my support of the Gonski Review and the subsequent findings of that expert committee. I was thrilled to hear the announcement by the Premier of NSW, Barry O’Farrell when he became the first State leader to announce his support for the Federal government proposal to implement a ‘National Plan for School Improvement’, for all schools and all students. I have been further buoyed by the news that legislation has been passed by the House of Representatives to make this momentous plan a reality. This is what the plan will mean to you and our children at Glenwood High School. The Plan will resource properly all schools, teachers and students for generations to come. It means fairer funding. Each student in every school will receive a base-rate loading which will be integrated into school funding, permanently and is indexed so it will keep up with the cost of schooling. Schools and principals will no longer be reliant on special, time limited programs, which in the case of Glenwood High School, we rarely receive. Schools in New South Wales will get $5 billion extra, starting to flow in the next school year. Over time, this additional money will allow me to hire additional staff to support literacy and numeracy programs for students who struggle; hire talented writers in residence for gifted students; invest in technology for the future; invest additional resources into the professional learning of staff; and so much more. I am full of ideas about the way this money can be used to ensure that our students receive the very best education they deserve. The Schooling Resource Standard Under the new Schooling Resource Standard there will be a base amount of $9,271 per primary school student and $12,193 per high school student. We currently have 1500 students at Glenwood High School. There will also be extra money each year, through ‘loadings’ for students and schools that need more support. This includes:

Indigenous loading—ranging from $1,854 per primary student and $2,439 per secondary student to $11,125 per primary student and $14,631 per secondary student.

Students with limited English skills loading—set at 10 per cent of the per student amounts. A location loading—applied to each school’s per student Schooling Resource Standard amounts plus any school size amount. This will range from 10 per cent of the loading amount for inner regional schools up to 80 per cent of the loading amount for some very remote schools. A loading for students with disability. This loading will be phased in from 2015 once a nationally consistent data collection on students with disability has been established. In the meantime an interim loading has been calculated, and funding under the More Support for Students with Disability National Partnership will be extended by an extra $100 million in 2014.

I recently overheard a parent ask the question “where will this money come from?” My answer to that is simple: budgets are about setting priorities. What higher priority can a government have than ensuring the future security of our children? An excellent education generates a nation’s wealth and removes inequality. When education systems fail to invest fairly in opportunities for all children regardless of their economic circumstances, gender and location, entrenched generational poverty occurs.

If you would like more information about the ‘National Plan for School Improvement’ go to www.betterschools.gov.au. The website provides more information, including fact sheets.

I am excited by the possibility of additional funding for our school. My only purpose in drawing your attention to this issue is so that our children are the beneficiaries of great reform. I am not trying to guide your vote at the upcoming election. Fortunately, the political nature of my position is eased because a coalition State government and a Labor Federal government are in agreement with each other. My only concern is for the future of our great public education system which has and will continue to achieve so much for our children. The ‘National Plan for School Improvement’ will enable us to achieve so much more.

Year 12 HSC Trial Examinations Year 12 HSC Trial Examinations will have started by the time this newsletter is published. All Year 12 teachers have spent an enormous amount of time preparing students for these Trials, and beyond, including after school and holiday lessons. Following the Trials many Year 12 students will be busy finalising their practical projects and performances for Board of Studies submission and external examination. This is a very stressful time for students, staff and parents. It is imperative students use their time wisely, eat healthily and exercise sensibly so they can endure the marathon which becomes the final term of the HSC. All students still have a great deal of work to do to prepare for the final exams in October and November. Students and parents need to understand IT IS NEVER TOO LATE to improve those final marks. The greatest resource the students have is their teachers and by attending every class, every day, until the end of the term, and working hard to perfect projects, performances and exam responses they should feel extremely confident they have given themselves every opportunity to succeed. Parents are encouraged to make contact with the school if they are concerned or confused about any part of the HSC process or for advice on how best to support their child through this very important and stressful time. The best advice I was ever given as an HSC mum was to simply feed them with good food as the rest is up to them. Jessica Frost Year 12 – Trainee of the Year for Western Sydney Region A huge congratulations to Jessica Frost, Year 12, who was awarded Regional Trainee of the Year on Friday 21st June at the awards ceremony at Rooty Hill RSL Club. Jessica attends TAFE on Monday and Wednesday afternoons and works at Yogi’s Playhouse on Thursdays whilst completing her HSC. This is an amazing effort and confirms Jessica’s dedication, hard work and commitment to her future. Jessica now goes before a panel of judges in the State Finals for NSW Trainee of the

the Year. Good luck Jessica! Glenwood High School is very proud of such a fine young woman. Girls Open Knockout Soccer Regional Champions for 3rd Year Running Our fantastic Open Girls Knockout Soccer Team is the Regional Champion Team for the third year in a row after soundly defeating Mitchell High School on Wednesday 12th June, 2012. FROM THE DESKS OF THE DEPUTY PRINCIPALS

“Carpe diem. Seize the day! Make your lives

extraordinary.”

(John Keating, Dead Poets Society)

It is difficult to believe that we are already halfway through the year. The deputy principals have

been impressed with how students regularly and routinely meet the school’s Positive Behaviour for

Learning expectations and set a good example for others. The year has seen the school being

represented at the highest levels in extracurricular activities such as sport, dance and debating and

it is pleasing to see that students take pride in being a member of the Glenwood community and

represent their school with distinction. We encourage all students to ‘seize the day’ and take every

opportunity to make the most of their time at Glenwood High School. It is rewarding to see the

enthusiasm with which students take on additional responsibilities and roles which not only

benefits their own development but contributes to a positive tone across the entire school. The

deputy principals would like to thank our staff members who give their time freely to ensure that our

students are able to access the best possible education.

The school’s focus on Positive Behaviour for Learning is integral to how the school functions.

Students are aware of the need to display appropriate behaviour at school by focusing on the

following core values:

respect for others, self and property

responsibility for actions

ready for learning

Our PBL reward system allows students to be recognised for following these core values.

Students should be encouraged to give their reward cards to their teachers to ensure they are

being recognised for their efforts.

Glenwood High School is a uniform school and we expect that all students will attend school

dressed in the correct uniform each and every day. Students who dress in the school uniform give

a clear indication to their teachers that they are ‘ready for learning’ and have invested time in

ensuring that their appearance sets a positive tone. In addition, the high school experience

involves readying students for life beyond school and in particular, the world of work. Most

workplaces will either have a uniform or dress code that must be followed as a condition of

employment. Our school’s commitment to the school uniform helps students learn that there are

certain expectations with regard to dress that need to be followed now and into the future. This is

important preparation for their participation in the workforce and encourages them to form good

habits for the future. The school website has detailed information on the school’s uniform policy:

Telephone: 9629 9577 Fax: 9629 2796 Website: www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au

Facebook: Glenwood High School NSW

http://www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/our-school/rules-policies/

uniform-policy

In particular, our website has images of approved and non-approved shoes to assist parents in

purchasing appropriate footwear. The following are not acceptable forms of footwear and must not

be worn to school:

The deputy principals and executive staff closely monitor the wearing of the school uniform. We

ask parents to assist this process by ensuring that their child is wearing the school uniform. With

the cooler weather now here, parents should note that black jumpers/jackets are not part of the

school uniform and must not be worn to school. Non-uniform jumpers/jackets are liable to be

confiscated if they are worn without justification. Students are expected to comply with the

school’s uniform policy just as they will need to comply with the dress code of their future

employers. In particular, it is important that senior students model the correct wearing of the

school uniform for junior students. We appreciate how almost all students wear the school uniform

with pride each and every day.

Students commence high school as young people and leave as adults. During this time, they are

maturing and we expect that they will take increasing responsibility for themselves and their

bodies. As a result, it is important that students manage their toilet breaks in a mature and

responsible manner. The toilets are available for students to use before school, at recess, at lunch

and after school.

Telephone: 9629 9577 Fax: 9629 2796 Website: www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au

Facebook: Glenwood High School NSW

As young adults, high school students should be able to manage this aspect of their personal care and avoid having a toilet break during class time. To repeat, we expect that students will not miss out on class time to go to the toilet. The toilet in the front office should only be used by students during class time for a genuine emergency situation. Any student who has a genuine medical issue should report this matter to the school so that appropriate allowances may be made. Otherwise, we expect all students to be engaged in learning during classtime.

Glenwood High School maintains a ‘banned items list’ to ensure that the school remains a safe

environment for all. For the safety of others, their property and school property, under no

circumstances are students to bring the following items to school:

chewing gum

permanent markers

ring pull cans (ie, salmon/tuna tins, etc)

liquid paper

aerosol deodorants

aerosol cans of any description

skateboards

scooters

laser lights

metal rulers

Cigarettes /electronic cigarettes

lighters

matches

imitation guns or weapons

illegal items (eg, weapons, drugs, drug paraphernalia, etc)

inappropriate or offensive material

‘V’ drinks or highly caffeinated beverages

medication of any kind (unless registered with the front office)

‘deep heat’ or similar products

We would like to elaborate on some of the items on this list. Glenwood High School is still a very

new school and as such, it has beautiful grounds and a fresh, new look. It is imperative that

everyone plays their part in maintaining this aspect of the school. The SRC and Prefects have

been leading the charge in removing some chewing gum from the school and their efforts are to

be commended. We recently added ring pull cans to this list after a few incidents where

students had not disposed of these cans appropriately. As a result, if students wish to bring

tuna, salmon or anything else from a ring pull can to school, they are required to decant the food

into a container first. Aerosol cans present a health risk to some students who have asthma and

other breathing conditions. As a result, it is important that students only bring roll-on deodorant

to school to ensure the safety of others. ‘Deep heat’ type products have recently been added to

the banned items list as they pose a danger to some students. We thank parents for ensuring

that these items are not brought to school under any circumstances.

Parents are reminded that if a student in Year 9 to Year 12 is absent for an assessment task for

any reason, they must contact the relevant deputy principal as soon as possible (at the very

latest, the first day the student returns to school) and provide a medical certificate for the

absence and/or other documentation justifying the absence.

Telephone: 9629 9577 Fax: 9629 2796 Website: www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au

Facebook: Glenwood High School NSW

Senior students are provided with an assessment handbook each year which details the rules

governing assessment practice. It is important that all students familiarise themselves with these

rules and follow them. Otherwise, students may receive a zero mark and these marks may not

contribute to the student’s overall grade and/or HSC mark submitted to the NSW Board of Studies.

The NSW Board of Studies requires schools to warn students who are at risk of not completing a

specific course. If a student receives an N-award warning letter, this is a clear indication that the

student is at serious risk of not completing the course successfully. In the event that a student

receives an N-award warning letter, the student should speak to their classroom teacher to

ascertain the best method of redeeming the N-award warning and progress successfully in the

course. It is not advisable to ignore these warnings as they can normally be addressed quickly

when teachers and students work together.

Year 8 and Year 10 students have now chosen their subjects for 2014 and 2015. We would like to

thank parents for the massive turnout at the subject selection evenings. This demonstrates that

our parent body is eager to learn about the curriculum choices at Glenwood High School and want

to play an active part in helping their child choose courses. The vast majority of students generally

receive all of the subjects they have selected. However, for a number of reasons, there will be

some students who do not receive their preferred choices and may need to re-select. This will

involve an interview with the relevant deputy principal and a discussion of different options

available to the student. The school works hard to ensure that most students receive the subjects

they wish in a process that is fair to all students. For Year 8 students, they will receive a

confirmation sheet in the next month or so, indicating the electives they will be enrolled in for Year

9 (2014) and Year 10 (2015). For Year 10 students, they will have a more extensive process

which involves subject selection interviews with an executive teacher, year adviser or careers

adviser to ensure that Board of Studies requirements have been met and also match the student’s

interests with their subject choices. In past years, we have found this to be an effective process for

helping guide students and provide detailed advice.

Glenwood High School is a large school we attempt to ensure that parents are informed of

upcoming events. One of the best ways to keep in touch with the school is to ‘like’ our FaceBook

page. This can be accessed at:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Glenwood-High-School-NSW/159488217454512

We presently have almost 1000 ‘likes’ and this continues to grow each week.

Parents of students in Year 7, Year 9 and Year 11 are reminded that parent-teacher evening will

be held on Monday, 29 July 2013. This provides an important opportunity for parents to discuss

the progress of their children directly with classroom teachers and talk about ways for their child to

improve. It was excellent to see so many parents attend the recent parent-teacher evening for

Year 8, Year 10 and Year 12. We look forward to meeting with even more parents at this event.

We would ask parents to consider how they monitor their children’s use of social media. There is

an ever-increasing suite of applications and websites that students are using to interact with each

other outside of school. These include FaceBook, Instagram, Kik, AskFM and SnapChat. Social

media has its advantages, however, we have found that some students are inclined to use social

media in an inappropriate manner.

Telephone: 9629 9577 Fax: 9629 2796 Website: www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au

Facebook: Glenwood High School NSW

The school takes incidents of cyber-bullying very seriously and the school has the authority from the Department of Education and Communities to intervene in such situations and take disciplinary action against students. The old adage that ‘if you don’t have anything nice to say about someone, it is better to say nothing at all’ still holds true. Students at Glenwood High School, over their six years of schooling, attend a number of sessions on technology, the use of social media and Internet etiquette. As such, students are expected to follow the school’s PBL expectations when communicating online. In addition, students should be reminded that anything published on the Internet is not private, even if it is posted ‘privately’ with privacy restrictions. There is nothing to stop a person from copying this information and then re-broadcasting this for others to see. Of particular concern is the fact that future employers may have access to this information and students may be disadvantaging themselves in this regard due to the nature of information they place on the Internet. We would ask all parents to have a conversation with their children about their use of social media to ensure that they have an understanding of the possible consequences of inappropriate use. Our welfare curriculum will continue to addresses many of these issues at regular intervals. Parents are reminded that the next P&C trivia night will be held on Saturday, 31 August 2013.

Please mark this date in your calendar. The 2012 event was extremely successful and we look

forward to seeing many more parents at this event later in the year.

The deputy principals would like to thank staff, students and parents for helping to make

Glenwood High School a school of excellence.

Until next time,

Donna Healy (Deputy Principal – Year 7 and Year 10)

Mark Sutton (Deputy Principal – Year 8 and Year 11)

Belinda Young (Deputy Principal – Year 9 and Year 12)

On behalf of the P & C Committee, I would like to thank all the families that have paid their

Yearly P & C Contribution.

To date, with these funds, we have been able to help subsidise the creation of a School App,

the purchase of some sporting jerseys and will put the rest of the funds to further good use.

On 31 August, we are holding our Trivia Night with a “Going Back to School” theme. So get a group of friends

together, book a table, join in the fun and help raise some additional funds for our great school.

Once again, thank you for your ongoing support and I hope to see you at our Trivia Night.

LATE, ABSENT OR LEAVING EARLY NOTES

Notes are required from Parent / Guardian to explain reasons for lateness, absence or leaving

early. Please ensure your child’s full name and year is clearly written on the note.

If a student does not produce a note for lateness a detention will be issued for that day.

ALL notes are required to be handed in at Student Reception at the beginning of the day to enable

a pass to be issued to the student and for the details to be noted in the system to avoid a truancy

note being issued.

OUR NEXT P & C MEETING will be held on 7 August, 2013 in the Conference Room.

Please come along and join us 7.00pm start.

Busways: has been informed that parents may have difficulty understanding the ‘hail and ride’

principle that applies to school bus services along streets without bus stops. As such, we have

been requested to provide an explanation of this concept for you to include in a future issue of the

school newsletter.

School Bus Routes Without Bus Stops

Busways: operates several school services along streets which don’t have marked bus stops – in these situations, the “hail and ride” principle is used. Students will be picked up or dropped off at any location along a street with no marked bus stops, so long as it is safe for the bus to do so. A safe location is one that is clear of any parked cars or road infrastructure that will prevent the bus from pulling in parallel to the kerb; is clear of any ‘no stopping’ zones or road intersections; and is a reasonable distance (200 metres or more) from a previous or the next stopping location. Students are encouraged to wait in groups to ensure buses can maintain timetable reliability. If there are any further questions regarding the “hail and ride” principal, please contact the local Busways depot on 9625 8900. Your assistance in placing this information in your school communication channels would be appreciated. Regards

Reconciliation high on students’ agenda By Nick Soon July 8, 2013

Michael Lett with some of the speakers after the school assembly.

ABOUT 12 Glenwood High School students recently spoke with great compassion on National Reconciliation Day.

Among them were Jacquelyn Yazdani, Patrick Gleeson, Sarbjot Sadeora, Joshua Brooks, Alana Head, Daniel Gaucci, Alicia Hawkins and Zeynep Ali, who addressed their last school assembly before the winter break on June 28.

The students said they learnt a lot from Michael Lett, a former NRL player who helped Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander children get an education.

Mr Lett told them about himself and how important National Reconciliation Day was to indigenous people.

He explained it was the day Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologised for the mistreatment of Australia’s indigenous people, and that it was also the day they were regarded as equals.

‘‘It was a stepping stone to healing,’’ he said.

Jacquelyn Yazdani of year 10 said Reconciliation Week was about recognising many past mistakes and creating a better future.

‘‘The future each and every Australian deserves, whether you are indigenous or from another

country, is to come together and celebrate diversity,’’ she said.

Patrick Gleeson of year 7, said the assembly made him think about how previous generations mistreated indigenous people.

Back to School Adjustments

Whilst the facebook photos of your friends’ children may indicate otherwise, the transition back to school can involve lots of adjustments and challenges for both children and parents. Whilst change is a constant, we are all creatures of habit and adjusting to change can be quite stressful and also result in concerning behaviours, which if unaddressed, can become more problematic.

Some of the adjustment related behaviours and concerns that parents and carers have rung Parent Line for information, advice and support with, include the following:

Distress about and/or refusal to attend school

Sleep issues and concerns

Increased anger and irritability

Temper tantrums

Homework and study issues

Friendship and playground issues and concerns

Behavioural concerns at school

Of course, problems are not usually confined to the children in the family and frequently the stress and anxiety involved in dealing with one unhappy family member impacts on everyone.

The following strategies have been compiled by the Parent Line Counselling team, to help families in adjusting to change and managing some of the challenges associated with difficult transition periods.

Try to attend to the basics first, like sleep, nutrition, exercise and

relaxation.

Try to have realistic expectations about this period and to prepare for

possible challenges associated with adjusting to change, new routines, expectations etc. This might mean cutting children a bit of slack initially as they come home from school exhausted and cranky, making sure they get time for refreshments and replenishment once home, before

engaging in after-school activities etc.
