Innovation

It’s tough for “real teams” to think outside the box—especially amid the competing pressures of their everyday lives.

But it’s completely possible.

In fact, studies show that an “average” group using a structured innovation process will produce up to 500% more ideas than a so-called “creative” group that uses traditional brainstorming methods.

That’s where Juice’s Innovation in a Box program comes in.

Innovation in a Box is a structured innovation process that helps real teams create breakthrough results.

Ultimately, our goal is to equip real teams with the knowledge and skills to create breakthrough thinking back at the office.

Innovation This chapter includes information about the following Juice programs and services:

INNOVATION

Learning outcomes

Participants will leave the program with a newfound confidence for in-novative thinking and the ability to:

• Identify and clearly define opportunities for innovation

• Generate a wide range of original ideas—on an individual basis, and as a member of a team

• Assess ideas to identify the best—even breakthrough—options

• Make a business case for the chosen innovative solution

• Turn ideas into reality

Day 1

In Day 1 of the workshop, participants are immersed in a hands-on, dynamic, and refreshing Innovation Process and its accompanying tools. There are videos and short segments of theory always followed by hands-on application, keeping a healthy balance and pace.

Torrance Creativity TestParticipants are asked to individually complete a 30-second creativity test. The facilitator will explain how the Torrance Creativity Test measures innovation based on several factors: the number, range and originality of ideas generated; plus the openness of the individual and group.

Brain PokerThis small-group exercise encourages participants to think about and identify their preferred thinking and learning style.

Problem Solving vs. InnovationThere is a marked difference between problem solving—that is, fixing a problem—and coming up with innovative breakthrough ideas. In this segment, the facilitator will encourage participants to think beyond basic problem solving, and to venture into more creative thinking.

i5 Process and Tool DeckParticipants are introduced to the Juice i5 Process: a step-by-step structured process to stimulate and implement innovative thinking. The i5 includes the following steps: Identification, Investigation, Ideation, Impact, and Implementation. Participants will learn about and apply a number of innovation tools to assist them through each stage including drill-down diagrams, value chain analysis, stimulus response, prototyping, paired comparison, and an implementation checklist.

Day 2

Day 2 involves a deeper dive into additional innovation tools. Participants are encouraged to apply what they learn to real-life opportunities. Tools include the following:

• Identification - S.T.O.P.- POQi Matrix

• Investigation - Reframing Matrix- Drill Down- Customer Insight Mining- Stakeholder Diagram- Empathy Maps

• Ideation - Value Chain Analysis

- Reversal- Stimulus Response- Lotus Blossom Diagram- POWER

• Impact - Bracketology- Force Field Analysis

• Implementation - Prototyping- Strategic Gameplan

module

Innovation Coach Bootcamp equips participants with the skills and know-how to train others in the Innovation in a Box program. Bootcamp participants will plan and co-facilitate an Innovation in a Box workshop, and lead an innovation project for a real client.

Workshop outline (1 day)Innovation Coach Bootcamp is a training module of Juice’s Innovation in a Box core program. Taken together, training is three days long: two days of Innovation in a Box, and one day of the Bootcamp.

Innovation Coach Bootcamp is essentially a “practice” day for participants. They will teach a shortened version of the core program—including an overview of the Juice i5 Process—to an external client (note: client is often selected by Juice).

Bootcamp participants must do work prior to their practice day. This may include speaking with the client in advance, to gather information to prepare for and design the session.

Following Day 3 and in tandem with their Juice facilitator, the coaching team will stay in touch with the client, to check on progress. This may be on a quarterly or as-needed basis.

INNOVATION

Overview

Understanding the Innovation Curve

Whether or not an organization encourages innovative thinking, its employees will come up with ideas nonetheless. But sometimes, these unconstrained innovation campaigns may be all for naught—particularly if those ideas don’t align with the organization’s strategic priorities.

All too often, innovation efforts fail because employees are unclear where to focus their innovation efforts. This is where executive leadership becomes especially important.

In this workshop, executives who wish to foster a culture of innovative thinking will learn how to empower teams to innovate at the right level on the innovation curve.

“Nothing but positive. The i5 innovation process is part of everyone’s conversa-tions. I hear the team saying ‘Let’s i5 it!’”

INNOVATION

Learning outcomes

Executives will learn how to foster innovative thinking throughout their organization by:

• Pinpointing exactly where innovation is needed within their organization• Clearly communicating to employees and teams the key areas that most require inno-

vative thinking• Clarifying to employees and teams where their assistance is needed on the “innovation

curve”

module Workshop outline (4 hours)

This half-day session for executives will cover the following topics:

The Torrance Test of Creative ThinkingParticipants are asked to individually complete a 30-second creativity test: come up with as many uses as possible for a tin can. The facilitator will explain how the Torrance Creativity Test measures innovation based on several factors: the number, range and originality of ideas generated.

The Innovation CurveThe facilitator will present the Innovation Curve to participants. Discussion will focus around the question: where on the Innovation Curve do we want to play—as an organization, and as teams?

The Juice i5Participants receive an overview of the Juice i5: a step-by-step structured process to stimulate and implement innovative thinking within an organization. The i5 includes the following steps: Identification, Investigation, Ideation, Impact, and Implementation.

Optional—Experience the i5 (60-90 minutes): Participants will learn about a number of innovation tools to assist them through each stage e.g. drill-down diagrams, value chain analysis, stimulus response, prototyping, paired comparison, and the Strategic Gameplan.

“Concepts are simple, understandable, not mystical, magical stuff.”

Senior Director, HR and ODHealthcare Organization

More and more, the discipline of innovation is emerging as a new strategic priority across the public and private sectors. Why? Because innovation can create efficiencies, lower costs and increase profitability.

But often, the challenge is not in coming up with ideas: it is about the ability of leaders to engage their workforce in a process that transforms how everyone approaches innovation.

An unstructured process—such as people sitting around a table in a boardroom, asked to “think outside the box,” and wait for inspiration to happen—often doesn’t yield great results, nor is it energizing.

Research shows that real teams using a structured innovation process will produce up to 500% more useful ideas than a so-called “creative” group that uses traditional brainstorming methods.

It is possible to create a culture brimming with breakthrough ideas and innovations! Join Rick Boersma for this thought-provoking and graphic presentation, certain to transform the “box” from which you currently view innovation!

Our keynote presentations inspire today’s senior leaders to transform their businesses into higher-performing organizations pulsating with motivated, passionate, innovative employees who consistently go above and beyond the call of duty. And the results have been astounding.

ABOUT JUICE

How people learn: Real Work™

We know that people learn best by doing, and especially by learning on-the-job.

Accordingly, our programs focus on learning, practicing and applying new skills and tools to learners’ real world circumstances. We use simulations, action-learning, and real-work simulators to ensure not only learner engagement, but success.

We also know that the best kind of practice is on the job—so we:

• incorporate Real Work into everything we do; and then

• support the learning and work done in the class through post-training support, which we call Project Learning™.

If simulations bridge the gap between theory and practice, Real Work and Project Learning bring the practice home.

Engaging activities

Juice Inc training is grounded in adult learning principles.

And because our experience has come from the field of experiential learning, you’ll find we deliver learning through an engaging blend of activities including:

• Instructor-led content that teaches simple and practical tools for leaders to use every day;

• Small and large group discussions that create a shared experience, and deepen understanding;

• Individual reflection that provides time to process learning and explore self-discovery and personal application;

• Deliberate practice to build courage and confidence in new skills; and

• Experiential exercises to create both rational and emotional commitment.

Juice Learning MethodologyAll Juice Inc. programs share common design principles.
