What’s On

D on’t panic if you still haven’t sorted out a Father’s Day present, there’s still time to give your dad the gift of knowledge.

Book publisher Th e Folio Society print a range of engaging, classic books presented with beautiful binding and stunning cover art that will look stylish in the bookcase.

If your dad loves reading then there’s a great collection of novels to keep him busy, with diff erent genres that will suit any taste.

For budding psychologists, or those who are simply interested in the workings of the brain, Stephen Pinker’s How the Mind Works is an excellent examination of the machinery of the mind and looks at its origins and development.

If your dad’s more into twist-riddled detective fi ction then Th e Maltese Falcon, written by Dashiell Hammett, is ideal – fi lled with mystery and drama, this fast-paced book will keep readers guessing until the fi nal page.

With its serious, heavy subject matter, Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 is a thought provoking book that uses satire and humour to convey the horrors and hypocrisies of war and has remained relevant since it was fi rst published in 1961.

Adventure lovers will enjoy the thrills of Master and Commander, Patrick O’Brian’s story about a journey to the sea during the days of Nelson that will make readers feel like they’re on a ship travelling the seven seas.

A voyage of another kind is recounted in Apsley Cherry-Garrard’s Th e Worst Journey in the World, which recounts the author’s own experience on Scott’s Terra Nova expedition to Antarctica. Unlike many similar novels, Cherry-Garrard’s book does not sugarcoat the reality of life in the icy environment of Antarctica and instead presents the hardships of travelling to the most isolated part of the world. Each of these books are united by their brilliant content and gorgeous presentation, and will impress bookworm fathers everywhere.

W e’re getting down to the business end of the campaign and it’s reached a predictable stage. Both

leaders are stalking up and down the east coast, both trying to hold their nerve.

Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne with a bit of Tasmania thrown in. Th is is where the marginal seats are and where this election will be won and lost.

For Kevin Rudd, he’s still the underdog but he doesn’t play the part very well.

He’s campaigning like it’s 2007 but the rock star sheen has worn off and his folksy ways are evoking more rolling of the eyes than gleeful cheers.

You see, Kevin Rudd is a confi dence player and is spurred on by a good poll or a glowing media report. Of late both have been few and far between. Th e eff ect has been an increasingly tetchy Mr Rudd, especially when two separate opinion polls showed he was in danger of losing

his seat of Griffi th.He was forced to hold two campaign

events in his own seat, to stave off a September 7 result that would see him become only the third Prime Minister in history to lose an election and be turfed out of Parliament.

But as we get closer to polling day, things aren’t improving but they do seem to be stabilising. All indications still point towards a solid defeat but not annihilation.

Th e negative attack ads have started and are helping Labor’s prospects.

But Kevin Rudd’s biggest win this campaign has been his eff ective attack of the Coalition’s Paid Parental Leave scheme.

Women in particular are becoming sceptical of the economic argument for it. If the economic argument is failing the Coalition is going to have a tough job selling the political one.

Still, Rudd knows that his Prime Ministership isn’t going to be retained on costings and the PPL.

He’s been banging on about both for a good week and while it has been eff ective it’s wearing thin.

So, he’s started on the personal and personality based attacks.

Brace yourself for a barrage of personal insults, you’ll be seeing the constant assassination of one’s character.

Th e fi nal days of this campaign will get very dirty.

Marrickville High School will be the venue for next Wednesday’s F1 in Schools Race Day Finals with over 190 primary and

secondary school students from the inner west taking part.

Each year the program engages more than 40,000 high school students across Australia to become interested in science and technology.

Secondary schools taking part include Newington College, South Sydney and Marrickville High. Wilkins Public and Marrickville Public are the two primary schools.

It’s the fi rst time primary school students will take part. Students as young as 10 get involved with designing, testing and making miniature F1 cars that are capable of going 80km/h.

But there’s more to the program than making fast cars. Th ey’ll learn leadership, working in a team, how to manage a project, business planning, public speaking, collaboration, writing and presentation skills.

Marrickville High Deputy Principal Bruno Sciacca who is involved in the program said the skills gained prepared them for the workforce.

“Children have to do presentations to the likes of Richard Branson and Bernie Ecclestone. Th ey’re not just racing cars, but showing the judges the process they undertook getting their fi nal product to the fi nals.”

Bicycle hubs across the Marrickville Local Government Area may become a reality if a Marrickville Councillor’s vision

for a collaborative regional bike share scheme is approved.

Labor Councillor Jo Haylen has put forward a motion that asks Marrickville Council to investigate ways to implement the Bicycle Share Scheme for the use of the broader community.

Th e scheme will see other Councils in Sydney combining with Marrickville Council to have hubs situated across suburbs in the Inner West.

Councillor Haylen said the idea would suit a range of users.

“It will benefi t those who cannot aff ord to buy a bicycle or simply don’t have storage space for a bike, but want to ride,” she said.

Its aim is to also reduce traffi c congestion and encourage a healthier lifestyle.

Marrickville Council has already passed a motion that will allow a feasibility study into the viability of a bicycle and helmet share scheme throughout the LGA.

Th e scheme will follow Melbourne’s lead, which has proven to be a success.

Cr Haylen said Marrickville was committed to having an active transport system.

“Th is continues an important discussion about the massive benefi ts of cycling in our community,” Cr Haylen said.

Universities, residential areas in the Inner West and public housing would all benefi t from the scheme.”

She is adamant that Marrickville leads

the way in forward thinking initiatives.“Getting the [bicycle share] scheme up

and running in Marrickville is an important part of building the regional

network,” Cr Haylen said.Would you make use of a bicycle share

scheme? Email your thoughts to [email protected].

Heated fi ght: Man sets fi re to shed in argumentA man will appear in court next month after allegedly setting fi re to the shed of a property in Sydney’s inner west. About 8.30pm on Tuesday, a 39-year-old resident of a boarding house on Crystal Street, Petersham, had an argument with another man at the premises. It’s alleged the 39-year-old splashed petrol around the backyard and shed area, before setting it alight. Police have been told the man let the area burn for a short time, before putting it out with a hose. No one was injured by the fi re. Offi cers from Marrickville Local Area Command attended and arrested the 39-year-old, taking him to Newtown Police Station. He was charged with damage property by fi re and was conditionally bailed to appear at court on September 24.

POLICE SNAPSHOT

Crime fi ghting in Marrickville has received a boost with the inclusion of three new recruits arriving for their fi rst offi cial day of duty at Marrickville Local Area Command

on Monday.Probationary constables Panos Toumbelekis,

Jessie Kwast and Aaron King were three of 161 recruits sworn in on August 23 at the Police Academy in Goulburn.

Superintendent Gregory Peters said their fi rst day would be the start of many milestones in a challenging, but rewarding career.

“Th ese recruits have shown great dedication and spirit to pass the requirements of the course at the Police Academy and I’m sure they will approach the next phase of their career with the same enthusiasm,” he said.

Th e offi cers will now complete 12 months on-the-job training and study by distance education with Charles Sturt University before they offi cially graduate with an Associate Degree in Policing Practice. When they graduate they will offi cially hold the rank of Constable.

bStreetsmart: Safe driving message taught to students

Up to 20,000 students across NSW and the ACT attended the bStreetsmart initiative last week at the Allphones Arena

Homebush including students from Casimir Catholic College.

Now in its eighth year the bStreetsmart initiative was the brainchild of two Westmead Hospital trauma coordinators Julie Seggie and Stephanie Wilson.

Th e three day event gives students an insight into the dangers of driving when

not concentrating and also provides insight into the consequences of being involved in an accident.

Year 10 student Jessica Bertuzzi was one of those who attended.

“I found it interesting to see how the emergency services did their job. Th e Ambulance, Police and Fire Brigade showed how they went about dealing with the result of a car accident,” she said.

She said listening to car accident survivors tell their stories was shocking, but said that as a learner driver, the show made her think about safety.

Plinth plight: Statue could be locked in Council cupboard

Dangerous corner: Bollards do nothing to protect students

The Angel of Victory also known as the Angel of Marrickville has caused a stir as to its fi nal destination.

Th e statue that towered outside Marrickville Town Hall has been removed due to wear and tear.

Marrickville Council had proposed ways of dealing with it according to Councillor Chris Woods, including to have it destroyed because it caused copyright and moral issues. However that proposal has become redundant given the sculpture is a symbol of Marrickville.

Th ere is a solution for its safe keeping.Geoff Ostling, president of the Marrickville Heritage Society said the monument is too important to neglect and should hold a special pride of place indoors. But this could be in a Council cupboard.

Th e bronze cast statue was built in 1919 and was restored in 1988 through librarian Chrys Meader. She spoke of the importance of preserving it when she addressed a Council meeting last Tuesday night.

Th e conjecture is what will replace the Angel of Victory on the plinth, and what to do with the statue taken down.

Cr Chris Woods successfully moved that Council cast a new interpretation of the Angel of Victory sculpture in bronze to replace the original and acknowledge the work of its original creator Gilbert Doble in 1919, and also pay tribute to Alex Kolozsy who did the restoration

work in 1988.“Th ere is a lot of history behind the

Angel of Victory that goes back to the First World War. Marrickville residents paid for the statue themselves,” Cr Woods said.

Lou Steer from Marrickville ESP Gallery said the statue was invaluable to the community.

“She is the most beautiful sculpture and represents the heart and soul of our community. Winged Victory is worth much more than the value of 600 kilos of copper to our community.”

Parents of Tempe High School students have expressed their anger over the danger smashed safety bollards continue to pose

to their children.Situated on the corner of Richardson

Crescent and Unwins Bridge Road fi ve bollards have been installed to protect pedestrians from vehicles mounting the curb.

Local, Juliet Barr said hundreds of children use the pedestrian crossing

where the bollards are placed, however the bollards are a hazard as they narrow the footpath.

“In the last year trucks, buses and cars have been mounting the curb forcing students to back onto a fence to get away. Th e path is very narrow on this corner and the situation is extremely scary,” she said.

Marrickville Mayor Vic Macri said Council had approached Railcorp, who own the land the footpath backs onto, and hope to acquire part of it.

“We are still waiting on a reply from them,” he said.

Paid Parental Leave: “Women will be the biggest winners”

Promise to club: Labor will build function room, verandah

Liberal candidate for Grayndler Cedric Spencer claims the newly proposed Paid Parental Leave (PPL) Scheme will go a long way to

helping families who need it most.Mr Spencer said the Liberal’s policy

gives more consideration to couples having children.

“Our scheme will provide mothers with 26 weeks of paid parental leave, at their actual wage or the national minimum wage (whichever is greater) plus

superannuation. In contrast, Labor’s Parental Leave Scheme is paid at 18 weeks minimum wage and doesn’t provide super. Under our scheme, women on average will be big winners,” he said.

He claims the PPL scheme will result in a woman earning the average full time salary being around $21,000 better off compared to the current arrangements.

“Australian men and women receive a replacement wage when they are on annual leave, sick leave and long service leave, so why shouldn’t a mother receive her full wage while on parental leave,” he said.

A re-elected Labor Government would ensure a $340,000 refurbishment would go ahead for Marrickville Golf Sporting

and Community Club.Th e Member for Grayndler Anthony

Albanese said on Monday if the government were going into a second term, the funds would be increased.

“Th e club has been an important part of the Marrickville community for over 60 years. It’s not only one of the busiest clubs

in Sydney with over 25,000 games played every year, but is also home to junior golf programs and has been used as a hosting venue for Seniors Weeks events,” he said.

Having been an integral part of Marrickville’s history, Mr Albanese said upgrading the facilities at the golf and community club would allow it to grow in popularity and would thrive for many years to come.

“Th e Rudd Labor Government is serious about investing in local sporting communities and helping them grow into the future and that’s what this funding is all about,” Mr Albanese said.

Can’t fi nd a place to show your artistic talents? Skunkworks Artspace has a solution.

A not-for-profi t organisation, Skunkworks Artspace is the place where artists and the community come to collaborate.

Th e gallery houses 12 private studios, large project and performance spaces, silk- screening and workshop facilities and a break-out room where a half pipe is featured for unwinding. It makes for a unique place where artists are able to

refl ect, engage, and ultimately create their fi ne pieces of work in an environment that nurtures creativity.

It is a place where artists create their works and then display them in an exhibition. Th e short term residency program allows artists to create their work and then show them in situ.

Current artist in residence Mark Swartz, an environmental sculptor, will showcase his work in October.

But the next Show that will open to the public will be that of French painter

Leonie Th errien on September 4. A highly focused young painter, Leonie’s work is something to be seen.

Skunkworks is a fi ercely independent artists-run initiative, with the specifi cations and facilities of a commercial space.

Described as a “deep background Marrickville culture producer”, by FBI Radio, audiences can expect to see alternate stunning paintings, print, and photography, as well as new-media, large scale installation, performance, object

and experimental works. Shows open monthly and have been

steadily gaining attendance. Given the industrial location, viewing of exhibitions is by appointment only, however exhibition closes are popular with the Real Marrickville Sunday session rounding out each show.

We currently seek volunteers to be involved in curatorship and to become part of the crew. Applications to exhibit and for special projects in the 2014 season are also open.

Some people are sick of hearing about it but some people are still living in denial about their overall health. Th e just-released

‘Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle’ study traced thousands of people over the 12 years from 1999 to 2012 and shows a disturbing picture of the nation’s battle with diabetes and obesity.

It found that Australians aged between 25 and 34 weighed 6.7 kgs more than they did in 1999 and the only age groups to have their average weight drop were those over 65.

Researchers found the incidence of diabetes remained very high, with almost 270 adult Australians diagnosed each and every day.

Patients with diabetes had a similar risk of dying as smokers, and obese people were twice as likely to develop depression.

Joint Chief Investigator Professor Jonathan Shaw of the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute said radical action, such as an anti-obesity campaign similar to anti-smoking campaigns, may be needed as well as government initiatives such as taxing junk food and subsidising healthy foods.

Professor Shaw explained: “One of the biggest contradictions is that people are living longer but they’re being diagnosed with more disease. So their quality of life is being compromised”.

Th e report describes diabetes as one of

the most challenging public health issues and says socioeconomic status plays a signifi cant role in diabetes risk, with people in disadvantaged areas twice as likely to develop the disease.

Disadvantaged areas generally have more junk food outlets and fewer recreational opportunities, according to Associate Professor Anna Peeters, who adds, “education and income are major determinants of health”.

Researchers measured how much exercise people do, and how much time they were sitting down every day.

Professor Shaw says from this, they found many people’s perceptions were inaccurate, stating: “people signifi cantly overestimate the amount of exercise they’re doing by about 50 per cent, and they underestimate by about half the amount of time they’re spending sitting down”.

Professor Shaw continued: “Th e health and wellbeing of a whole generation of young Australians is being compromised by a lifestyle rich in nutrient devoid energy-dense foods and low on physical activity”.

Everybody really needs to be responsible for their own health. Th ere is an old saying ‘if you don’t make time for your health now, you will have to fi nd time for sickness later’.

What’s your view? Tell us by emailing [email protected].

W ith this beautiful sunny weather we are getting it’s pretty easy to fi nd an excuse to get outside. But

if you’re still fi nding it hard to fi t in exercise what can you do?

Maybe losing an extra kilo isn’t getting you up and out of bed anymore. I read a report that might give you some other, even better reasons to get the training shoes on.

Th e Science Daily report showed that regular exercise can reduce the risk and symptoms of more than 20 physical and mental health conditions, and can also slow down how quickly your body ages.

A review of research, which summarised the fi ndings of 40 papers published between 2006 and 2010, found that exercise improves conditions including cancer, heart disease, dementia, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, obesity and high blood pressure.

Exercise is, without a doubt, one of the most powerful ways to improve your health. Researchers also found that exercise reduces the risk of at least two dozen health conditions, ranging from cancer and heart disease to type 2 diabetes, stroke, dementia and depression. Exercise also slows down the rate of ageing itself, providing perhaps the closest example of a real

life fountain of youth as we will ever fi nd.

Hopefully if you get out and get the exercise in now, you won’t get any of those conditions in the fi rst place. Sure there’s always one clown who says ‘why bother, you have got to die from something’ normally as they are shoving a hot dog or cigarette in their mouth.

But in the meantime, for those of us that want a good quality of life and enjoy being active and healthy, know that exercise is a huge source of major health benefi ts.

Many are proven but there are a whole lot more we don’t even know. Do research yourself, go out and do a half hour of some kind of activity you enjoy, that’s at a fairly intense level for you. Finish, sit down while your breath comes back. Th en answer one question.

Knowing all the good things that are taking place inside your body right then, how do you feel?

Find a reason to get outside!Don’t be in denial about your health

T hey’re one of Cuba’s biggest Latin dance bands fronted by trumpet sensation virtuoso Alexander

Abreu and together with his band Havana D’Primera they’re coming to play The Hi-Fi Entertainment Quarter Moore Park on Friday, September 6.

Abreu has been playing professionally since he was a teenager and through the years he’s etched out a reputation as Cuba’s pre-eminent trumpeter, playing with a who’s who of Latin Jazz including legendary Chucho Valdés and Buena Vista social club singer Omara Portuondo.

He spent years perfecting his musical skills in Denmark as an accomplished composer, arranger and vocalist – he worked on creating a sophisticated sound that would entice Cubans.

He’s taking his 14 piece band across the world with Australia fi rmly set in his sights after he fi nishes touring Japan, his current destination. They’ll play Brisbane, Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne.

His band is comprised of Cuba’s fi nest musicians, each of whom share Abreu’s vision of reenergising the island’s rich musical traditions. Since forming in 2008, they have become one of Cuba’s most popular exports, playing to huge crowds in Europe and enthusiastic fans at home.

Abreu’s impressive range of skills can be heard to full effect on Havana D’Primera’s second album ‘Pasaporte’, which won in the salsa category at Cubadisco, the Cuban equivalent of the Grammys in May.

Tickets are $64.50 and are available at www.thehifi .com.au.

SUNDAY 11am October 1stSeptember 8th 1.00pmA Song and Dance Spectacular

C ould ‘Deal or No Deal’ be dead? Maybe, after Channel Seven announced a new game show

presented by none other than my favourite host, Grant Denyer. The show is called ‘Million Dollar Minute’ and will see contestants face off in a battle of general knowledge with the chance to win one million dollars. It hasn’t been confi rmed if ‘Million Dollar Minute’ will replace ‘Deal’ but let me tell you, it’s defi nitely on the cards.

Channel Nine has reportedly secured the rights to the next two Ashes series to be played in England in 2015 and 2019. This year’s series did well for Nine’s HD channel GEM despite our Aussie boys failing to fi re at the pitch.

‘Dancing with the Stars’ will fi nally return to Channel Seven before the year is

out. Back as host is Daniel MacPherson and there’s even whispers Kelly Osbourne will be his sidekick this year. As for the contestants, songstress Tina Arena is defi nitely in with Rhiannon Fish, Jacinta Campbell and Tony Barber all rumoured as well.

Popular ‘Prison Break’ inmate Wentworth Miller who played Michael Scofi eld shocked the world last week when he came out as gay. Miller was hugely popular with the female audience during the show’s four-year run but he came out of the closest in a protest letter declining an invitation to appear at the St. Petersburg International Film Festival in Russia. Miller joins a growing wave of protests after Russian President Vladimir Putin recently signed laws banning the promotion of gay, lesbian or bisexual lifestyles and making foreign tourists who are members of the LGBT community subject to arrest. Miller wrote: “As a gay man, I must decline. I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government”.

Producers of hit cooking show ‘MasterChef Australia’ are looking for ways to freshen up the series next year. The show has already had a junior version as well as a professionals series, so who knows what they’ll think of next but I reckon a series of nannas and grandmothers going hard at it would work a treat. After all they are the best cooks going around.

Legendary Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone is planning to adapt his ‘Rambo’ fi lm series to the small screen. ‘Rambo’ is currently in early development but it’s been confi rmed Stallone will not reprise his role as the iconic action star. Now all we need

is a ‘Rocky’ TV series and we are set.

I caught an absolutely crazy show on A&E last week called ‘Beverly Hills Pawn’. The show explores Yossi Dina’s extraordinary pawn shop in the heart of Beverly Hills where Hollywood’s elite go to fi nd a lot of fast cash. Yossi makes million dollar pawn deals at a moment’s notice for

masterpieces, gems, antiques and priceless Hollywood treasures only attainable by the rich and famous. This show is unlike any other pawn show you’ve seen before because the store’s owner isn’t afraid to splash some cash, which is actually quite refreshing to see. ‘Beverly Hills Pawn’ airs weeknights on A&E so don’t miss it.

Newtown’s scratchy 28-20 win against competition newcomers Wyong at Henson Park last Saturday enabled the Jets to stay in the hunt for that

all-important “second chance” with a top four fi nish going into the semi-fi nals.

Wyong opened the scoring in the fi fth minute with a try against the run of play, courtesy of an ill-judged Newtown grubber-kick at the Roos’ end.

Th e visitors’ second try came from some smart play that saw angle running that outdid Newtown’s defence.

Th e tide started to turn for Newtown when Brad Barrett scored in the 23rd minute after the Jets pressured the Wyong defence in their own quarter for an extended period.

Th e resurgence however was short lived as Newtown’s lack of defence allowed the Roos to come back again through a soft try 10 minutes from halftime. Going into the break Wyong lead 14-6.

Newtown responded with a great try early in the second half. Josh Ailaomai kick-started the movement with a superb midfi eld play that saw Ryley Jacks and Adam Henry combine to send Pierce Sapsford over in the corner. Chris Taripo nailed the conversion from the sideline which narrowed the defi cit to 14-12.

Th e horror run continued for the Jets when

they failed to regather from the kick-off . Th ey then had to repel an onslaught from the Central Coast side. An upset was on the cards, when they scored through some smart angles and switches in play.

In the fourth quarter Pierce Sapsford broke away inside his own half, supported by Ryley Jacks who stepped and swerved his way to score a determined try. Chris Taripo’s

conversion narrowed Wyong’s lead to 20-18.Nafe Seluini scored a terrifi c converted try,

to take Newtown to a 24-20 lead. Th e Jets fi nally ended any hope Wyong had of winning the match through Pierce Sapsford scoring to win the match by 28-20.

Newtown has the bye in the 25th round and then faces Canterbury-Bankstown at Henson Park on Saturday, September 7.
