WEEKENDER GIVEAWAY

From The Editor’s Desk

by Troy Dodds

W e all know that around this time of the year, the big fellow in red spends a fair bit of time around the

Marrickville area, and as he gets older, he is getting more forgetful.

Whilst he was travelling from shopping centre to shopping centre on a bus this week, he left behind his famous “naughty and nice” list (presumably, he was about to check it twice).

A reader has been kind enough to supply us with the highlights...

Julia GillardStatus: NaughtyNotes: You should see the power bill for

Santa’s workshop this year! I’ve even had to put a few elves off to ensure I can keep the place open. Even switching Rudolph to energy effi cient light bulbs hasn’t helped all that much. She said there would be no carbon tax, now we have one. We don’t tolerate people who don’t tell the truth here at the North Pole.

Tony AbbottStatus: NiceNotes: Off the naughty list this year,

mainly because he volunteered to help deliver presents by driving his big truck to some of the hard to reach places. Mrs Claus doesn’t like him all that much, but I have a soft spot for him.

Barry O’FarrellStatus: NaughtyNotes: Little Barry was always on the

nice list but this year, he is switching sides. An education is the most important thing we can give a child – better than any present I can leave under a tree – and we should not dare cut funding to that very precious gift.

Th ose 2DayFM presentersStatus: NaughtyNotes: Michael and Mel. Mel and

Michael. What to do with them? I tossed and turned (so much so that Mrs Claus banished me to the couch!) over which list they should be on. I listen to 2DayFM in the sleigh, and even I get a laugh out of that big jolly fellow Kyle, but I don’t think prank calls are funny. Given that Michael or Mel won’t reveal who actually made the fi nal decision to put the call that

forgive little Anthony, but I will get there eventually... as long as his speeches are all his own work in the future!

Carmel TebbuttStatus: NiceNotes: Carmel was on top of the

world when she was Deputy Leader and Education Minister. Unlike many, she has moved into the Opposition well and deserves to be congratulated. Big present for Carmel this year!

Nathan TinklerStatus: NaughtyNotes: Mrs Claus has me on a diet

and exercise plan so whilst riding a few kilometres on the exercise bike and watching ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ this week, I took the opportunity to read the journalistic bible that is Th e Daily Telegraph and almost spat out my fruit roll-up when I read that Nathan Tinkler has given up his corporate suite at ANZ Stadium. Ever since I wrapped up Wayne Bennett under his tree a few years ago, he’s always invited me along to State of Origin. Next year I’ll have to sit in the crowd, perhaps I’ll dye my beard blue and join Blatchy’s Blues!

Alan JonesStatus: NaughtyNotes: Alan has to learn that Santa is

watching. I am watching when you’re awake, I am watching when you’re sleeping and I am even watching when you are not on air! Alan, you are a good boy at heart. But you keep crossing the line and I can’t put you onto the nice list. It’s a shame, I won’t be able to get you the dart board with Julia’s face on it this year. Maybe next year.

Sarah FergusonStatus: NiceNotes: I don’t always like journalists

(sometimes I get a lot of bad press) but one I do adore is Sarah Ferguson. She doesn’t get as much acclaim as she should, so she’s getting an extra big present this year.

Lara BingleStatus: NaughtyNotes: Th e only person I’m happy to

have on the naughty list!

ended so tragically to air, there is no other list for them to be on but the naughty list. Still too many secrets and face saving PR to change my mind.

Anthony AlbaneseStatus: NaughtyNotes: Santa loves the Internet, but

he doesn’t copy anything and claim it is his own work. It will take a long time to

Garden MaintenanceState Opposition Leader, John Robertson, joined Shadow Education Minister and Marrickville MP, Carmel Tebbutt,

this week for a ‘day of action’ against the State Government’s $1.7 billion education funding cuts.

From 8.30am on Wednesday, Mr Robertson and Ms Tebbutt stood at the gates of Marrickville West Public School and encouraged parents to join their campaign and oppose the Government’s funding cuts.

“Th is is a signifi cant campaign we’re making to make sure the O’Farrell Government doesn’t get away with making such a signifi cant cut. We’re encouraging parents to join our campaign,” Mr Robertson said.

Mr Robertson said the impact of the cuts would be “felt for decades”.

“Th e twelfth of the twelfth, it’s a good opportunity to get out and campaign against the O’Farrell Government’s $1.7 billion education budget cuts,” Ms Tebbutt said.

Ms Tebbutt said Marricvkille West Public School, together with Dulwich High School of Visual Arts and Design, was already signifi cantly aff ected by the cuts due to the withdrawal of support for students with a disability.

“Th is is an area where people value education highly,” Ms Tebbutt said. “We’re encouraging parents to write to Premier Barry O’Farrell and Education

Minister Adrian Piccoli and ask them to reverse these cuts, because they will impact on their children’s education for years to come.”

In September, Education Minister Adrian Piccoli said the NSW Government had to make “tough decisions” to ensure the state is “living within its means” and to put its education budget back on a sustainable fi nancial footing.

“Th e NSW Government is committed to delivering high quality education and

training, and driving better education outcomes in schools across the state. But the reality is that we are facing very diffi cult economic circumstances,” Mr Piccoli said.

Mr Robertson has been touring schools in recent weeks to gain momentum for the campaign. Ms Tebbutt attended 11 more schools in Marrickville on Wednesday, including Newtown Public School and Ferncourt Public School to also gain the support of parents.

Your Baby Can Read. He loves it….it really teaches them. He has such a wide vocabulary and I really

believe it’s because of this little programme

Miranda Kerr talking about her son Flynn using Your Baby Can Read.

The Your Baby Can Read! programme is a fun, multisensory approach to teaching language. The programme works so well because it is easy for a child to connect the written word to the word sound, and the meaning of the word. By utilizing this approach to teaching, children have a greater chance at reading success!

Your baby will see the words, hear the words, say the words, see images and videos related to the words, the words are always used in context and your child is encouraged to do an action related to the words. Your child will SEE, HEAR, SAY and DO!

Your child can learn to read as easily and naturally as he or she learns to talk.

Cooks River Valley Association members have collected almost 100 letters from locals calling for the State Government to prevent

the discharge of raw sewage into the Cooks River and to invest in resources to make the river safe for swimming.

On Wednesday, the Cooks River Valley Association (CRVA) presented the letters to Marrickville MP Carmel Tebbutt, who will raise the issue of water quality testing and the need to upgrade infrastructure with the relevant State Government ministers.

Water quality tests by the CRVA and a sanitary investigation by the NSW Government’s Beachwatch program show that concentrations of E.coli and other indicators of human pathogens are too high for safe swimming in the river, most likely due to sewage contamination.

CRVA president, John Butcher, said the many projects along the banks of the Cooks River in recent years have helped to develop it as a fantastic recreational resource but more should be done to improve its water.

“People love to walk and cycle along its banks. And we know some people go boating. But swimming is out of the question,” Mr Butcher said.

“Many of these form letters were signed by local residents attending a Water Festival at Marrickville West School,” he said.

Th e Water Festival was part of a local community project that focused on residents’ relationship with the Cooks River.

Gayle Adams, the CRVA’s water quality

coordinator, said she hopes the government responds to their concerns.

“We would like a clear plan of action to address this issue including a major upgrade of sewerage infrastructure in the Cooks River catchment,” Ms Adams said.

“We are pleased to see Sydney Water has planned SewerFix projects in the area but

more is needed.“Th e visionary aspirations of local

people are clear. Th ey want to be able to swim in the river. Marrickville Council’s Community Strategic Plan for 2021 records local desires for a healthy environment so that children can swim in the river.”

Th ere are viable swimming spots on

other Sydney rivers but none on the Cooks River.

Years ago, people often swam in the western suburbs waterway. In the 1930’s, Marrickville Council supported a team of lifesavers who patrolled the Cooks River. Th e Association hopes that a clean river will mark the return of such days.

Wednesday, December 12, 2012 marked the 150th anniversary of the day Newtown was proclaimed its own municipality in 1862.

Th e 12/12/12 anniversary was marked with a series of events across the suburb, including the launch of the Gritty Newtown historical walking tour, now off ered permanently by the City of Sydney.

Brown Street was blocked from traffi c and from 1pm, the Salvation Army Band played a lunchtime concert. City of Sydney business precinct coordinator Jan Campbell, encouraged people to

learn about the area’s history through the City of Sydney’s archival materials.

“My objective was to not only celebrate the day but also to give people a taste to let them know that they can do their own research,” Ms Campbell said.

Last week special sesquicentenary banner poles were installed along King Street.

Local business owners got into the spirit by taking part in the ‘shop front gallery,’ a collection of stores displaying archival photos of Newtown for passers-by.

Marrickville Council also held free screenings of the documentary ‘I Have a Dream: Th e Making of a Mural’ at the Dendy Cinemas Newtown, with archival images also screened.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Th e shops are busy, the mail box is full and the supermarket lines are getting longer.

And folks it’s only going to get worse. Th e closer the big day gets, the more crazy everything turns. So it’s no wonder this year more and more shoppers are going online.

For many, promises of free delivery, immediate dispatch and no waiting in long lines is too good to pass up. But I have to admit, for me there is nothing like physically holding a gift in my hand, making sure it’s the right size or colour and knowing that a shipping delay won’t make any diff erence – I get peace of mind knowing my present will defi nitely be there on Christmas Day.

However, in saying that, for me it really comes down to price. If it’s a lot cheaper on the web, and is listed as ‘in stock’, then I am more willing to take the chance.

But if it’s the same price I’m all about going into a store and buying the gift. I have also found a lot of stores are price matching the online off ers if you can show them a photo as proof on either your phone or ipad.

When it comes to food shopping, personally, I fi nd the best time to go is really early on Christmas Eve, before everyone else wakes up. At 6am in the

morning you may not feel like fi lling the trolley but I can tell you it’s better than battling the crowds at midday.

Besides, come lunch time on the 24th you’ll want to be sitting down enjoying the fi rst oversized meal of the week, not fi ghting over the last ham on the shelf.

Th is year I am having the family to my house – I’m not the world’s best cook but some cold ham, hot pork and fresh prawns are hopefully easy, even for me.

Th e other thing my family does is make our own bon bons. Instead of everyone getting a hat and bad joke we put in funny items from something silly they’ve done over the past year.

To be honest this is the highlight of the day normally. A time when we all laugh uncontrollably and really do forget about the hardship of the past year.

My father in law once told me though “family is like seafood – it’s great at fi rst – but the longer you have it the quicker it goes off ”. So my fi nal tip: pace yourself. Not only on the food and drink but also the family, because you want everyone to leave wanting more, not wishing they’d never come!

Inner west fi re stations including Newtown are being temporarily closed due to funding cuts, with fi re fi ghters concerned about the impact on community safety.

Marrickville MP Carmel Tebbutt slammed what she described as the O’Farrell Government’s “reckless new policy” of prioritising budget cuts above staffi ng fi re stations, as Newtown Fire Station was closed and unstaff ed on November 5, 6 and 24.

“Th e Newtown Fire Station staff are being sent to south west Sydney to cover shortages there,” Ms Tebbutt said.

“Th is means longer response times and fewer fi refi ghters able to respond if emergencies arise in the local area.

Inner west representative for the Fire Brigade Employees’ Union (FBEU) and professional fi re fi ghter, Martin Dixon, told the Weekender the cuts weren’t only aff ecting fi re stations but specialist appliances as well, such as cherry-pickers used for pumping water onto fi res from above.

“Th ey’re just rolling the dice,” Mr Dixon said. “Every extra minute that we don’t turn up can be the diff erence between saving someone’s life or pulling a dead body out of a burnt building.”

Marrickville MP Carmel Tebbutt has called on the community to have their say on how $200,000 should be

allocated to projects in the Marrickville electorate under the Community Building Partnership Program 2012.

Ms Tebbutt said community organisations are the backbone of the Marrickville electorate and described the program as an opportunity to help them grow.

“Th is year there have been 32 applications from community groups in the Marrickville electorate, the same number as in 2011. Unfortunately the O’Farrell Government has provided $100,000 less this time around for community organisations,” Ms Tebbutt said.

“An assessment panel established by the Department of Premiers and Cabinet will assess the projects and their community benefi ts and will make the fi nal recommendations.

“Th e panel has sought my advice on the applications as the local representative. You can help me do this by telling me which projects you support.

Unfortunately, funds are limited and not all projects will be successful in securing a grant. Th at’s why I want to hear from all residents about which projects they think most deserve funding.”

In the past, Community Building Partnership grants have helped a number of local organisations. Pathways Early Childhood Intervention received $50,000 to expand its infrastructure for children with disabilities, whilst Rosemount Good Shepherd Youth and

Family Services, which received $41,700 to extend its youth and family services building.

Petersham Bowling Club was given $2,400 to reduce energy consumption by converting from electric hot water to gas; $10,000 was given to Taverners Hill Infants School P&C Association to upgrade the playground and nature areas and $42,988 for Marrickville Youth Resource Centre to replace the hall fl oor.

You can have your say on this year’s grants by emailing [email protected] by January 11, 2013.

For more detailson the program, visit www.carmeltebbutt.com.au.

The holiday period is one of the busiest times of the year for emergency veterinarians who see thousands of animals

brought into vet hospitals injured or extremely ill after consuming food at Christmas celebrations.

“Many of these seasonal pet emergencies can be avoided if owners have a little extra knowledge of the dangers,” said David Simpson, veterinary surgeon and director of the Animal Referral Hospital (ARH).

A Golden Retriever was once brought to the ARH with signs of a distended,

painful abdomen. “Th e dog was allowed to roam around

during a Christmas party and ate everything it could get its paws on. We had to perform abdominal surgery to empty the dog’s stomach of a massive amount of food and a variety of large objects that were destined to cause intestinal obstruction.”

Th e dog had consumed beer bottle tops, balloons, wooden skewer sticks with barbequed meat on them and assorted plastic. Dr Simpson said people should closely watch their pets whilst enjoying the festive season.

It’s hard to say how many hours Teddie Kelk and Frank Madden have shared together since they met in 1930’s Newtown.

On December 7, they reminisced the area’s past with about 20 mates from the Newtown Old Boys’ 70 and over club at the Town Hall Hotel as the suburb prepared to celebrate its sesiquicentenary.

“We have a reunion every two or three months, we’ve been getting back together for the last 12 to 18 months,” said Mr Kelk, born in Angel Street, Newtown in 1934.

“Frank and I grew up together and went to the old Newtown Infants School. When we lived there, it was a slum. Th e houses were falling down because there were no young men.

“A lot of the young men that they conscripted, they were the ones that fought on the Kokoda Trail, and they hauled them out of Newtown. Military probos, the military police were called. It was pretty tough times.”

Over middies and lunch, Mr Kelk and Mr Madden recalled the changes they’ve seen on Newtown’s streets since the inter-war period of their early youth, when they lived together at Union Street.

“Th ey’ve done the place up, the gay community and stuff like that. Beautiful, to their credit. It looks like magic down in Union Street,” Mr Kelk said.

He said he, Mr Madden and friends practically lived on King Street as teens and you “couldn’t walk a yard” without

saying hello to someone you knew.“When you left home, you’d be excited.

Th e shops, the lovely people, the women,” Mr Kelk recalled.

Mr Kelk said he grew up at a time when rent was 16 shillings a week and “what they put on your plate, you ate”.

He and his brother played for the Newtown Warratahs and mingled with other Newtown neighbourhood kids on Newtown’s streets.

He remembered friendly personalities of the day, like Ron ‘tough as teak’ Lovett, “the bloke that should have played for Australia”, and the man who sang with Frank Sinatra, Norm Erskine, who used to weave references to Newtown into his songs on the fl y at concerts for the benefi t of Mr Kelk and his company.

“He’d point at me from the stage and say, ‘hey mate, how do you get to Newtown?’ and we’d say, ‘over the bridge, you dope!’

referring to Newtown Bridge above the old tram lines.”

Later, from the mid-1950s, the pair worked together as garbage men for Marrickville Municipal Council.

“It was always referred to as the Mickey Mouse Club, MMC,” Mr Kelk laughed.

Mr Kelk and Mr Madden encouraged other old boys over 70 to join their next reunion: call president Kevin Toby on 9567 6161 or Mr Madden on 4342 1145.

One of the sweetest things in the inner west is Sergio’s Cakes at the Marrickville Metro shopping centre.

Since opening its doors in July, the family-run business has made its mark on the area’s culinary landscape and lured in the sweet-toothed with its delectable range of treats.

“Everything is made fresh and you can defi nitely taste that in our cakes,” said store manager Phil Philippou, the godson of Sergio himself, a Cyprus-born pastry chef with over 30 years experience.

“Sergio’s fi rst shop was on King Street, Newtown, about 20 years ago, so we’re coming back to our roots in the inner west at Marrickville,” Mr Philippou said.

Taste and presentation are paramount for the business, with cakes baked daily at Sergio’s state-of-the-art Regents Park bakehouse.

“At Sergio’s, we want to embrace all of those factors by off ering a lavish sensory experience full of fl avoursome products in a beautifully designed setting, serving made to order cakes that are hand-fi nished and baked daily,” Mr Philippou said.

“We use fresh, Australian produce, all our products are hand crafted. I’m a big fan of the strawberry sponge cake, it’s a vanilla sponge with fresh, strawberry cream and fresh strawberry pieces inside.”

Mr Philippou said some of the top sellers include the baked ricotta cheesecake, the vanilla slice and home-made savoury pies like chicken and mushroom or beef stroganoff .

In the lead up to Christmas, shoppers can try the Sergio’s cake stall next to Santa Claus at Marricvkille Metro, with its special Christmas items like gingerbread houses, fruit cakes, fruit mince tarts, Christmas logs and gift packs.

“We’re just trying to spread that Christmas spirit within the whole Metro,” Phil said.

Sergio’s also creates beautifully customised wedding cakes made to order.

Th e end of the year is fi nally in sight and to make it even

more special you now have the perfect opportunity to get your social plans in line for Christmas and New Year. If you are seeing close family and neighbours, you’ll have an absolutely wonderful time. If you’re single, one of these friends or relatives might introduce you to someone who could be important during the coming year.

With so many planets in Sagittarius and the section of

your chart linked to the higher mind, a fresh initiative is about to unfold relating to foreign aff airs, legal matters or higher education. Th e section of your chart that covers self belief is also being highlighted and you can now start to rid yourself of any ingrained habits or destructive thought patterns that have been holding you back.

Th is week’s New Moon is in Sagittarius and it is conjunct

with the Sun, Mercury and Venus, which is highly signifi cant in astrology. Sagittarius rules your subconscious and it’s essential that you listen to anything your inner voice is trying to tell you. If you fi nd yourself getting into an argument, perhaps subconsciously you want this person out of your life. Remember to take the time to rest, relax and to just let go of stress.

Th is is an excellent time to attend to routine matters,

improve your working relationships and to start afresh with a diet and exercise scheme. Th e New Moon marks an important turning point in your career life, so pay attention to everything that is going on around you and how you feel about your current position. If the thought of being here this time next year terrifi es you, do something about it.

Th e New Moon joins the Sun, Mercury and Venus in the

fi nancial sector of your chart. Should you be a rare Scorpio who has allowed your fi nances to get into a bit of a mess, you will have an opportunity to put it all right again. To prevent this situation from happening again try and balance your outgoings with your income more evenly. Remember that a bargain is only a bargain if it’s an item that you really need.

Th ere is the New Moon in your eighth house ushering

in some major endings and new beginnings in your life. Th is could markthe start of a new partnership or relationship of some description. Youare cautious when it comes to makingcommitments because you take themso very seriously, but you may be considering joining forces with some one else for fi nancial or professional reasons.

Th ere is a bright New Moon in fi ery and outgoing Sagittarius.

Make certain you’re out and about as this is the sign that rules the networking and socialising section in your chart. You may fi nd a casual acquaintance has a lot more in common with you, and your friendship is ready to move onto a diff erent footing. Particularly interesting, inspiring and intriguing people are about to cross your path.

If you’re footloose and fancy free, you defi nitely need to

get where the action is over the next few weeks. Of course, that is if you’re looking for a partner. You may not realise it but you are exuding mystery and sex appeal at the moment and, if I were you, I would make the most out of it. Th ings may have been rather erratic in your love life in 2012, but now you have the chance to forge a new alliance.

With so many planets in your own sign you may be struck

by the realisation that it is entirely within your hands to control your own destiny. Of course this is a Sagittarian philosophical trait but if you’ve been feeling a little bit hemmed in by circumstances over the last few months or years, you may have lost sight of this fact. Remember, the only thing holding you back is your own fear of change.

Th ere is a lovely New Moon in Sagittarius, your opposite

number. Th e New Moon symbolises new beginnings and one or two of you could be putting a casual relationship onto a more serious footing. If there have been any rifts between you and a friend, take this opportunity to make a fresh start and you’ll be very glad that you did. Your confi dence will be building and you’ll be extremely open and friendly.

You are now entering into a period of time which will be

a turning point for your professional progress. Remain alert at all times and take notice of anything of interest that you might over hear. You must get networking if your career needs a boost. Sometimes your single-mindedness can blind you to the merit of socialising with contacts. Make a special eff ort to cultivate anyone who can help or inspire you.

Th is week’s New Moon falls in the section of your chart

linked to the home front and if you are seeking a new place of residence the right one is about to fall into your lap. If you need to forge a new alliance with a fl atmate or family member try and make the fi rst step. If you work from home, or you make or sell items for the home, you have a chance to make new contacts that can be of real benefi t to your business.

We all have those days when we feel like staying in bed or as if we are dragging ourselves through our daily tasks.

Unfortunately for some, this feeling continues for days or weeks! I believe most people are in tune with their body enough to realise when it is caused by something more than a few late nights.

Always feeling tired isn’t normal and there can be many reasons for it. Here are only a few to consider...

One of the fi rst conditions that may be checked is a simple blood test of Haemoglobin levels. Haemoglobin are the red blood cells in your body that carry oxygen around to your muscles, tissue and organs. If you have a low amount, then oxygen from your lungs can’t be carried to these areas resulting in a feeling of lethargy and tiredness. Treatments range from simple diet changes to blood transfusions in severe cases. Ferritin is another blood level worth testing. Low ferritin, which is your stored red blood cells, has similar symptoms and also can be treated to give energising results!

Th e thyroid gland and the adrenal glands also can be checked by a blood test or a saliva cortisol test for the adrenals. Low thyroid levels need to be carefully monitored during treatment to get the right ratio of the hormone thyroxine in your body. In our medical system currently, adrenal fatigue isn’t recognised

unless you develop the severe form of Addisons Disease in which case it is treated very seriously. People can feel extreme tiredness and weakness amongst other symptoms before it reaches that point, so don’t suff er in silence, take your symptoms or results to a doctor or a naturopath who understands and believes this condition, and can treat adrenal fatigue safely and eff ectively.

Respiratory conditions such as chronic asthma can cause tiredness because the body is consciously trying to breathe, which can be exhausting. Always make sure these conditions are well managed to minimise tiredness.

Depression is a common cause also. If we don’t adequately deal with all of the diff erent stresses we are exposed to, depression can arise and one symptom is lethargy. See a psychologist or counsellor if you feel you are struggling or need a diff erent perspective.

Of course diet and exercise also play a major role in your energy levels. Food is your energy source, so eat clean food and arrange for regular exercise.

T his week Shane Richards has sent in a not so sweet letter about our scary rate of sugar consumption:

“Many people tell me, ‘I eat a healthy breakfast, I eat (insert 99.9 per cent of breakfast cereal names here)’. Th ey even tell me ‘I also add fruit or honey’.

It’s then painfully clear to me that our interpretations of the word ‘healthy’ are very diff erent.

Let’s just break it down a little… take packaged breakfast cereal for example.Seeing they’re all basically the same I think it’s fair to just talk in general.

Th is particular brand that I saw on the shelf the other day had a whopping 12.9 grams of sugar for a 45 grams serve. Many have double this, this was one of the ‘better’ cereals.

Just to give some understanding of how much that is, 4.2 grams of sugar equals a teaspoon.

Th is means, that with every small 45 gram serve, people are having three teaspoons of sugar. Over seven days that’s 21 teaspoons, 31 days equates to 93 teaspoons and in one year that’s over 1,000 teaspoons! Remember this is only for breakfast you haven’t even thought about lunch!

Does it stop there? Well, I wish. If you’re adding sugar or even honey and fruit then your sugar intake for each

day will sky rocket. Now, I hear some people say ‘Shane, three teaspoons a day... surely that’s ok, relax’.

Well is it? Only a few decades ago most people’s grandparents were lucky to eat 1.5 teaspoons of sugar a day. Now people are eating upwards of 35 teaspoons per day and this needs to stop.

Why? Because, in 30 years A LOT has changed. More people suff er diabetes, are sick and obese.

So what can we eat?My own opinion and the best advice I

have received, is that you stick to the way we evolved eating.

Mother Nature has supplied us with all the real foods we need. Coconut shakes with free range organic eggs are my favourite way to kick start the day.

We all know it’s up to us to decide what we believe to be truth. If nothing in this article has changed your mind, I just beg you to sit down and start to do your own research on all things healthy. Don’t be fooled by big business marketing telling you it’s ok to spend your money with them!”

NEW YEAR’S EVE

Come and celebrate NYE on the terrace and watch the city fi reworksEnjoy a great meal at Regattas Cafe, terrace reservations are essential*From 8.30-12.30am(no cover charge)*refundable booking fee applicable

I n some really exciting news, Channel Seven has commissioned a four-hour drama titled ‘Never Tear Us Apart:

The INXS Story’. It’s understood shooting will begin in Melbourne mid-next year and producers have already started looking for actors in their late teens or 20’s to play the late Michael Hutchence and his bandmates Jon, Tim and Andrew Farris, Kirk Pengilly, Gary Beers as well as their long-time manager Chris Murphy. As this is sure to interest many Australians who are fans of the superstar band, I’ll be letting you know of any future developments.

Channel Ten are hoping for a better 2013 and one thing that could change their fortunes is snaring the cricket. It’s understood Ten are set to aggressively bid for the rights, which Nine have held for the last 33 years. The network has also

specifi ed that it is interested in the popular Big Bash tournament for next year as well. There’s talk FOX Sports are keen to share the Big Bash rights with a free-to-air network over the coming years.

The promos are some of the best I’ve seen in a long time and fi nally Channel Ten have announced the cast for the upcoming ‘Masterchef: The Professionals’ series [pictured]. Filming is already well underway in the show’s new home city of Melbourne with the judges this year to include legendary chef Marco Pierre White and the loveable Matt Preston. 12 of the 18 chefs hail from NSW with four from Queensland and just two from Victoria. ‘Masterchef: The Professionals’ will air in early 2013.

We all love a big Christmas feast, so why not see how legendary Australian

chef Maggie Beer cooks up hers. To celebrate the festive season Beer has invited some special guests to the ultimate Australian Christmas feast in the beautiful surroundings of her own property in the Barossa Valley. Tuck into ‘Maggie Beer’s Christmas Feast’ when it airs this Tuesday, December 18 at 8pm on ABC1.

Still on Christmas, and there’s no better way to gear up for the big day than a night of caroling. Every year on Christmas Eve Channel Nine puts on a wonderful presentation of ‘Carols by Candlelight’ and this year is no different. Hosted by the ‘Today’ show’s Lisa Wilkinson and Karl Stefanovic, the 75th Anniversary ‘Carols by Candlelight’ will feature a number of well-known Australian voices performing their Christmas favourites including Rachael Leahcar, Sarah de Bono, Darren Percival,

Marina Prior, Tim Campbell, Anthony Callea, Rob Mills, Lucy Durack, David Hobson and Shane Jacobson. ‘Carols by Candlelight’ airs Christmas Eve, December 24, at 8pm on Channel Nine.

Lastly, Foxtel has announced its new movie channel offering available to subscribers from January 1 next year. Foxtel will now offer a Foxtel Movies and Premium Drama package consisting of seven Foxtel movie channels (all in HD and SD), retain Showcase as a dedicated premium drama channel with HBO titles, World Movies and two +2 time shifted channels. The move follows Foxtel’s acquisition of Showtime PMP and news of the closure of the Movie Network Channels. This should keep you entertained for hours during the terrible summer programming on free to air TV.

Two Sydney Kings basketballers spoke to Ferncourt Public students about the importance of physical activity on Monday to help launch a

children’s mental health program.Players Aaron Bruce and Graeme Dann

spoke to kids from Kindergarten through to Year 6 before hosting a skills and drills session, and demonstrating slam dunks and shooting from half court.

“Th e key message is to get out and meet new people, make new friends, whether it’s through sport or something else. You can’t be a couch potato all your life,” Bruce said.

Th e event formed part of the launch of the Kids Matter mental health program.

Classroom teacher and a Kids Matter coordinator, Viktoria Sen, said the Kids Matter program promotes strategies of resilience to improve students’ social and emotional wellbeing into adulthood.

“We felt it was time to explain it to the children. Mental health issues are becoming quite prevalent. One in fi ve adults will have a mental health issue at some point in their life… Anxiety is an issue in something like one in seven children,” Ms Sen said.

“Like the name says, Kids Matter, but I

think kids these days feel they don’t matter – there’s a lot going on, their parents are really busy, they’re feeling the pressure of nationwide tests, they’re really becoming more aware of things than our own generation.” Ms Sen said.

She said programs like Kids Matter were a way of looking after “the whole child”, not

just physical wellbeing.“It’s something that doesn’t necessarily get

accessed by the curriculum, it’s something we have to embed,” she said.

“A child won’t learn unless they’re mentally healthy. We really feel from our perspective as educators, it’s the whole child we need to look after.”

Slam dunk for healthSydney Kings lend a hand to launch mental health program

The Sydney Kings visited Ferncourt Public School to launch a new mental health program.
