In2007,asurveyassignedbytheBertelsmannFoundationandtheFederalMinistryforFamilyAffairsstatedthatthemainchallengecon-cerningthecompatibilityoffamilyandworkinglifeinGermanyconsistsincreatingproperconditionsformenandwomentobeabletoreconciletheirworkingandtheirfamilylives
accordingtotheirownconceptsofanideallife.Accordingtothissurvey,itisnotonlynecessarytoimprovepublicregulations,e.g.relatedtothechildcaresituationforchildrenundertheageofthree,butalsotoforcecompaniesto“assumetheirrespon-sibilityforafamily-friendlyworkingenvironment”.

WehavebeenwonderingwhatpropertiesmakeDorschinterestingforwomenandwhatistobedonetoimprovethewomen’ssituationatDorsch.Thisiswhywequestionedfemalestaffmemberswithandwith-outchildrenatdifferentdivisionsandatdifferentlevelsinhierarchy.Here,itshouldbementionedthatthiswasnotarepresentativesurvey,butmerelyacross-sectionalsurvey.Let’shavealookattheresults.
Are working hours at Dorsch flexible enough?
Allfemalestaffmemberswhowerequestioned,nomatteriftheyhadchildrenornot,judgedworkinghourstobehighlyflexible.Thisflexibility,though,“isnotexclusivelyabenefitofwomen.Wedohavesomemenaswellwho–inconsultationwiththeirworkingwives–e.g.cometoworkintheafternooninordertobeabletocareoftheirsickchildinthemorning.”–“Ifyouaskme,ifworkinghoursareflexibleenoughforaparenttojugglefamilyandjob,frommypersonalpointofview,Icananswerintheaffirmative.DorschwasveryflexiblewhenIreturnedafteroneyearofbabybreakandalsowhenconcerningmyamountofworkinghoursperweek.Atthebeginning,Icamebacktoworkonly40hourspermonth(homework),becauseIhad

Concerningparttimework,itwasjudgedasadisadvantagethatthefieldofdutywasnottailoredtoparttimebutwas“simplyexpectedtobeperformedinlesstime.”
What’s good in your opinion?
Alongsideflexibleworkinghoursandfreetimemanagement,thepossibilityofhomeworkishighlyappreciated,especiallybymothers.”IthinkitisgreatthatIhavegotthepossibilitytoperformmyworkathome.Thisway,Iwasabletostartworkingagainwithouthavingfoundadaycareplaceformydaughter,yet.Today,ifmydaughtercannotjoindaycare(becausesheissickorbecausedaycareisclosed),Istillhavethepossibilitytoworkathomeandcompletemytaskswithouthavingtotakealeaveorhavingtofindasubstitutedaycare.”

Is there anything to be improved?
Apparentlytheintervieweesdonotfeelthesamewhenitcomestotheequalopportunitiesconcerninglead-ingpositions.
Themanagement,forinstance,shouldgenerallycounterbalancewhenfilling“importantpositions,e.g.divisionmanagers”–theseposi-tionsaresaidtobeheldbymenonlyatthemoment.Inaddition,somefeelthat“comparatively,thereareonlyafewwomeninthemanage-ment.Thatshouldincrease.

What would you ask of Dorsch?

What kind of business environment do we have to offer to render Dorsch an attractive employer for women?
A“moderninnovativeworkingenvironment”shouldbecreatedand“naturallyandasfaraspossible”adapttotheindividualsituationoftheemployee.However,the“prior-ityofsuccessfullymanagingthetasksaheadtothebenefitofall”isapre-conditionforthis.Thereshouldbe“asoundrelationshipbetweenwomenandmeninallpositions”.
