Not anymore.
When Data Protection was based on cost, it was easy to create an arbitrary system that offered a sliding scale for users or departments based on what they were prepared to pay. In the event of an emergency, however, everyone wants their data back as soon as possible – overloading IT teams.
Now that we can place a value on data the game has changed. We can now ‘insure’ data by understanding its present or future value and assigning the right level of protection accordingly. Even if users or departments argue they need it, if one set of data holds less value than another, it is easier to where the priorities really lie. What is your current approach to storage tiering?For quite some time now, customers have begun to align the value of data against the cost of the underlying disk infrastructure i.e. as the data ages, moving it to cheaper forms of storage. This tends to be within the same storage infrastructure. Fujitsu believes that true storage tiering should enable customers to manage online, near-line and offline with the same set of tools and be able to retrieve this data from any tier. The value of data is about significant events, not the data’s age.
What is the impact of missing an SLA for data retrieval?Depending on the industry your business operates in there will be differing data compliance rules that affect you. Things like 7 year retention of financial data, data protection legislation and PCI (payment card industry) compliance all place responsibilities for data retention and recovery. More importantly the rules around the time allowed for recovery and submission of data such as these, mean that significant financial penalties can be incurred for missing them.
Fujitsu recommends that businesses fully understand the impact of compliance on them and look to their infrastructures to ensure they can meet these regulations in the most cost effective and risk free way.

Do you use the same tools for all of your data?This may seem an obscure question but in a way it cuts to the heart of the data protection issue in that multiple tools can introduce time, cost and risk into the business. Time - in that we are having to specify, install, manage, maintain and train staff multiple times. Cost – because we have to procure multiple tools and supporting infrastructure, as well as budget for multiple maintenance contracts. Risk – due to the complexity of the environment, integration is required and having the right skills on-hand at the right time.
What data growth rates are you experiencing?Data growth on the face of it is a simple issue, just add more disk right? But if we simply add more of the same, the outcome is the same! More time, more cost and more risk. The Fujitsu approach is to give you freedom to grow but also to allow for the ‘aged’ data i.e. things we don’t want to keep on new, expensive storage but move out to more cost effective near line or off-line environments. But essentially keeping a single view of the data to aid retrieval should it be required.
